Can't install Panther - need expert advice

I am trying to install 10.3 on a G3 Blue/White machine that has a Sonnet G4 processor. It's got 3 hard drives and I want to upgrade the one that has Jaguar to Panther. My black Apple CD-ROM is recognized when I insert it but after the restart the gear spins for so long that I can leave it overnight and in the morning it is still spinning. I went to a local Apple Store and they burned me a DVD for 10.3.7. I put it into my Mac Book Pro and connected the laptop as a firewire target disk. I launched the Panther installer and it restarted and then, sure enough, the same thing happens where the installer doesn't ever get launched because the OS is stuck on the spinning gear. Also, when I hold down the option key to choose from the available OS's on the different HD's, it ignores that key and just starts up as it feels like doing. Since it is a blue/white with an ADB bus, I even tried an old ADB keyboard to see if that would make any difference, but it's still the same.
Disk First Aid reports no disk errors on any of the drives.
I'm running out of ideas. Anybody have a suggestion?

Hello! Look HERE as the B&W requires a firmware update. Also ram could be causing you a problem. Try removing a stick or two and see how it responds. Tom

  • Need expert advice on buying new macbook pro 15 inch

Hi I Am a digital textile designer and  planning to buy my first retina macbook pro. I need expert advice, which model should i buy 15 inch base model or with dedicated graphics card. i will use macbook for digital designing on Adobe photoshop and multi tasking. so now really confused is intel iris pro graphics will handle heavy files on photoshop or Nvidia GT750 m will good for heavy work. I am working on very large resolution file like 10 to 15k in resolution approx 1 GB in file size with lot of filters is being use while designing. Which model will handle above task well and last longer.

    Look at the specifications here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro
You may be confusing the quad core CPU with the Graphics processor.
It should have no difficulty in running Adobe Photoshop.
    Ciao.

  • Session/jstl  and load balancing - need expert advice

After user loggs in, I am getting locale from db and storing it inside userSession along with userLogin. Inside jsp using <fmt> tag to display locale based resource property.
    HttpSession userSession = request.getSession(true);
    userSession.setAttribute("UserLogin", oRS.getString("user_login"));
Config.set(userSession, Config.FMT_LOCALE, currentLocale); Also using filter after login page to check for User Session. Currently all working fine .
But if i want to make use of load balancing, whether still it will work?
1)I understand that if i depend on network config i.e. session request sticks to one server then i believe shld not be a problem
2)But if that is not the choice then what else ? Client want to make use of serialization technique. I do not know much about it, how to implement it, any sample is greatly appreciated.
3)what about jstl Config.set(..) whether any changes needed here?
4)Do i need to change filter code.
Pls pls help me, i really need expert advice on this.
    regards
    Manisha

1)If i want cluster server to replicate the session
then all attributes saved in the session have to be
    serializable.yes.
    2)In docs it is mentioned
Use setAttribute to Change Session State
In an HTTP servlet that implements
    javax.servlet.http.HttpSession, use
    HttpSession.setAttribute (which replaces the
deprecated putValue) to change attributes in a
session object. If you set attributes in a session
object with setAttribute, the object and its
attributes are replicated in a cluster using
in-memory replication. If you use other set methods
to change objects within a session, WebLogic Server
does not replicate those changes. Every time a change
is made to an object that is in the session,
setAttribute() should be called to update that object
    across the cluster.
Whether it means that if I want to store a object
(which is serializable) e.g. 'String' inside session
and use setAttribute() method then I do not need to
make that object implicitly serializable? No, you still need the objects to be serializable.

  • Can't install Panther- or kinda did?

I hope someone can help- I've spent days futzing with my computer and combing the discussions and support articles and am still stumped.
I recently received a used white iBook G3 from a friend with OS 9.1 on it. I want to upgrade it to Panther. I read in these forums that I needed to upgrade the startup disk to 9.2 in order to be able to start up from the Panther cds so I did that. I still could not get the computer to start up from the cd in order to install OS 10.3. I tried choosing in startup, pressing c as i restarted, pressing option as I restarted, no luck. Then I tried as I read somewhere here, pressing X as I restarted- and joyful day, I got the music and the OS X welcome. I got through the next couple pages asking me to set up internet, mail and to register (which I couldn't complete bc I wasn't hooked up to the internet) and then I was at an OS X desktop without actually having installed, didn't get to customize, choose archive and install or anything. Turns out I'm now in 10.0.3 and don't seem to be able to install Panther or install anything from the 2nd or 3rd cd! Was anything installed? I don't have iPhoto or many other things. Did a half install take place? Restarting from cd 1 does nothing. And I can't install anything off of cd 2 or 3. Please help!
What actually happened? And how can I complete this attempted installation?

Your post is quite confusing as you say you want to install Panther but somehow installed 10.0.3. ("Turns out I'm now in 10.0.3 and don't seem to be able to install Panther or install anything from the 2nd or 3rd cd!") First, unless you installed many of the extras all of Panther will install from one or two CDs.
Second, you don't need OS 9 at all. If you plan to run OS 9 applications and use Classic while running OS X, then you need to install OS 9.1 or higher, but OS 9 is not required in any way for OS X.
Because you've provided no useful information on the actual model and configuration of your Mac, it's pretty difficult to go much further. Installing Panther requires a minimum of 128 MBs of installed RAM and at least an 8 GB hard drive. For any practical use you really need about 512 MBs of installed RAM and a 20 GB hard drive.
I suggest you might try all over and do the following:
Insert the Panther Installer Disc One into the optical drive and restart the computer. Immediately after you hear the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Don't release the key until you see a spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu. After DU loads select the hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the left side list, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window, set the number of partitions to one (1) and the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the respective drop down menus. Click on the Partition button. After partitioning has completed quit DU and return to the installer.
Proceed with the installation until you reach the point where you select a destination drive. Click on the drive then click on the Options button. Be sure to select the Erase and Install option then click on OK. Continue with the installation. In the next dialog you should see a Customize button. Click on it to customize your installation. Continue and finish the installation. If files are needed from a second disc you will be prompted after the computer restarts.
At the top of this page you will see a navbar link titled "Manuals." Click on it and you will be able to track down a PDF copy of the User Guide for your computer as well as guides for OS X. I recommend you obtain the manuals and read them thoroughly.

  • Can I install Panther on my Lombard 400?

I was just given a hand-me-down Powerbook G3 Lombard 400 Mhz(bronze keyboard), wiped of all external applications. It's got 192M of built-in memory (64MB bottom, 128MB top) and 257MB virtual memory on the HD. HD is 8 GB original, plus 3.4 GB extended HD, which was installed later (I think). I've upgraded to OS 9.2.2, and have it networked to my home wireless network with Airport 2.0.4 and a Lucent PCI card.
But I'm wondering whether I can upgrade this machine to OSX 10.3 Panther. I believe that my friend has a set of retail disks that I can use (legally). Do I have enough memory/processing power? Can I upgrade directly from 9.2.2 to Panther, or would I have to install 10.1 or 10.2 first? (Don't have those disks.)
If so, here's the next problem: all I have is a zip drive -- no CD or DVD. So here are the questions: Can I install OSX by copying the disks to zip disks (I have a USB zip drive at my office) on my work PC, and then installing from zip disks? (I believe I saw on another forum that I can't install from a USB CD or DVD drive.) If the zip approach won't work, any other ideas? (I've got an Intel Mac Mini running Leopard at home -- don't know if that would help.)
Or should I just give up and stick with OS9? I'm not up for installing more RAM, spending money to buy a Lombard CD/DVD drive on Ebay, etc.
    Thanks for any advice!

A Lombard with 192mb RAM should be able to run up to Panther 10.3.9. More RAM would be better.
If the disks are retail (full-install), you don't have to have any previous OS installed. Mac OS 9 is separate, so you can have both Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 installed and switch between the two at will.
I don't see any way to install using a Zip drive. A Zip disk only holds about 100mb. A CD holds 600-700mb. Also, you can't boot from a USB drive.
The only way I can see to install on a Lombard without an optical drive is to remove the internal drive, install it into a FireWire external drive case, and connect it to another PowerPC (not Intel) Mac to perform the installation. Then, put the drive back into the Lombard.
Also, since you have a nice Mac mini for Mac OS X, it might be good to keep that Lombard a pure Mac OS 9 machine. In its current config, it's a great Mac for Mac OS 9.

  • Can I install Panther & OS 9.2.1 on a Firewire partition?

From reading other posts, it seems that Panther/Classic can be installed on a partitioned Firewire drive. Not quite sure how do do that as other posts were about different issues.
    Info
There's a G3 beige tower that there is no space for, but I'd like to run some of its apps, files and games on a Firewire drive on the iMac. There are backups for all the G3 data on CDs, and on 135MB removable drives. There were 2 HDs in the G3. The HD running 9.2.1 died; the other is running OS 7.1. The machine boots from the 9.2.1 CD, but not from Panther.
    Questions:
    1. One can never have too much backup, so will partitioning the Firewire drive leave enough free space after Panther and Classic are installed? *see # 2
    2. I assume it's better to use Panther rather than Tiger, as it's a smaller OS. The Firewire drive has 65GB capacity, with 44GB used for a Leopard 10.5.8 backup. About 20GB is available. And best to leave at least 10-20% of that space free.
    3. Would an 8GB flash memory stick work to backup Panther and 9.2.1, as well as apps, files, etc.? Nothing is large on the G3--would not need about 70% of the software that was originally installed on it (printer, scanner, browsers, modem, etc.)
    Is this a workable idea?
    Thanks!
    G

Hi G, The floods are in the north and I live in the south so everything is good here, but it seems half the world is either flooded or snowbound.
The La Nina effect in the Pacific is one explanation for the Australian deluge. Whether the extensive snow in the northern hemisphere is related, I'd be guessing.
As to your ambition, maybe find someone with a working Panther OS and clone it to an external with SuperDuper, and see if that works for you. As I've said, I have my doubts and think preserving your old hardware is perhaps the most straightforward thing to do.
If your old G3 is taking up space, maybe acquire an old laptop just for the purpose.
Every so often I fire up my iBook, so as to run an old app under Classic.

  • Can't install panther 10.3 on iMac G3

first of all, sorry for my bad english, and lack of capitals : i am using an old version of internet explorer version 5 i guess, which does not recognise the french characters, accents, capitals and the rest...
now my main problem : i am trying to install panther ( mac os10.3 ) on my imac 406 g3, running on mac os 9.2.2 with upgraded firmware.
when trying to run the first installation disk, the system replies :
    an error occured
startup disk was unable to select the install cd as the startup disk. ( -2)
i am also unable to start from the disk by pressing the c key, and also unable to select the disk in the through the " demarrage " in " tableau de bord " menu

From what I gather in your reply, I believe you're saying it is a 4 GB hard drive. Yes, OS X will run on your iMac, but you need a larger hard drive just to do that. OS X takes up gigabytes of space, requires even more gigabytes just to be able to run properly, and OS X applications take up much more disk space than anything before them.
Your iMac also shipped with 128 MB of RAM, but you'll need at least 512 MB to make it run with any sort of speed. If you can, get two 512 MB RAM modules for your system and have your Apple Authorized Service Provider install one (or both) of them for you. The module it came with is soldered in place, so you can't access it easily to replace it. You can put up to 1 GB of RAM in your machine (two 512 MB PC66 144 pin SO-DIMM modules).
At the same time, get yourself a good 60 to 80 GB hard drive (Seagate, IBM, Maxtor are all good brands, and make sure it has at least a 3 year warranty) and have your service provider install that for you at the same time as the RAM.

  • Can I install Panther on an extra internal drive to swap into another G5?

Bear with me on this long explanation...
I have a G5 that won't boot (lock on grey apple screen and then the fans blow wildly). I can't get the optical drive door to open unless it's in target disk mode with my powerbook -- where the drive door opens fine...but not when trying to boot the G5 on it's own. Unfortunately - this is preventing me from booting from the G5 Panther install discs.
I used Disk Utility while in target disk mode to verify/repair the disk and the report says the drive is fine (which I know doesn't mean it is free from corruption)...but if I then try to boot the G5 on it's own --- grey screen and I'm stuck. Seems like the G5 startup disk has died.
Also tried to boot from a FW drive with a cloned copy on it. Holding down option on restart --- I get the icon for an OSX volume (which is the FW drive)... click on the icon to select it (doesn't seem to do anything) but if I then hit the right arrow icon -- it goes back to the frozen grey screen.
OK -- here is the question:
Can I use my wife's G5 that runs Tiger to install Panther from my G5's install discs onto an extra internal drive that I can drop into the empty drive bay on the Tiger G5 --- and then install that extra internal drive (hopefully with panther now installed) into my G5 as a brand new start up disk?
If so -- are there any things that I need to do other than the procedure above?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

When installing Panther on the extra internal drive using the G5 running Tiger --- can I just insert the install discs into the Tiger G5 optical drive while it is already running and perform the install onto the extra drive
No. You have to boot from the installer disc to install any OS.
or would I need to restart the Tiger G5 with the install disc inside the optical drive and hold down c on restart to reboot from the Panther install discs and select the extra drive as the install destination?
    Yes.

  • Need Expert advice on choosing Source System for creating/maint Customers.

    Hi Experts,
Iam on project where we have CRM,ECC(SD),FICA in the System Landscape. The client is currently using ECC(SD) Customer master for creating/maintainig Customer's.As we have CRM & FICA in this implementation, we are planning to propose that we use CRM as the source system for creating/maintaing Customers as Business Partners & Perform standard replication to the other system's in the landscape.
The client has has asked us to confirm if having CRM as the source is the Best practice in the industry when we have this three systems (CRM,FICA,ECC(SD)) Landscape.I thought to get some expert advice on this & see if any of you have a similar project experience & share some views on this CRM BP vs ECC(SD) Customer Master.
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    Naveen

    Hi,
I believe it depends on your business senario. Here I can share some my experience for you.
    CRM As Source System
    Advantage:
    1) Choosing CRM as source system ,you can create several roles of customer for tracking the presales process of customer, such as prospect ,sold to party ,customers ,also you can define the life cycle of your customer and control which life cycle of customer should be replicated to ECC and which one should not.
    2)  CRM can have more views of customer and customer defined field (EEWB fields) ,so if you choose CRM as Source it will be more convenient  to create and fill in the all your user defined field .In other words ,choosing ECC as source you have to extend these field again in CRM .
    3) easy to maintain customer relationship
    Disadvantages:
    1) Have to extend Company code view of Customer data, since CRM do not have these view ,it is  just used for billing and integration with financial accounts.
    2)  have to extend some particular partner function of customer ,it is because of CRM it is only possible to create part of partner function automatically like SP ,BP  when business partner  is replicating to ECC.
    ECC As the source
Oppositely, if you choose ECC as the source ,the advantage become disadvantage.
    Advantage :
    1) Can Easily to create customer's data of company code view
    2)  Can easily to assign any partner function to customer
To conclude, if you only need to create sales order in ECC ,I believe choosing ECC as Lead system is better, since you do not have to extend customer data and easily to integrate with FICO and SD.Howerver, if you are going to create a sales order from opportunity or quotation ,CRM is your best choice.
    Regards ,Edward

  • Can you install Panther on an eMac using retail disks?

I've had problems in the past installing Panther onto an eMac using retail disks.
is there a problem doing this??
past issue - once installed, and booting for the first time, the screen on the eMac would only show the center 50%, the cursor would not go outside of it but there were buttons and icons outside of it. i had to install from the eMac disks and then upgrade to server. (i was doing a OS X Server install onto an eMac then)
current issue - i can't boot from the Panther disk 1!!! checking to make sure it is not the disk..... my client was in the middle of installing Panther, and in the middle of disk 1 it froze and i think gave a KP based on his report of what happened.
    thanks
    bob

When you get the blinking mac face/question mark when booting, this means that your machine can't find the startup disk it's looking for - whether cd or hard drive. After a moment, it then searches until it finds any startup disk. You can lose your Classic - OS9, while doing operating systems loads if you don't restore it from your original system disks that came with your machine. There may be problems trying to go back to 10.2 from 10.3. It's not a problem I've had, but someone was telling me that the major upgrades (Jaguar to Panther) may have firmware updates that aren't compatible if you try to reload the older OS. It's best to install Panther, then reinstall your applications from the original disks that came with your machine.

  • Can't install Panther on new hard drive

After my old hard drive failed on my IMac DV400, I bought a new 40GB hard drive. I put it in and when I put in Disc 1 of OS X 10.3, it gets to the destination drive and the pic has the drive with a ! mark in red and it says it can't load it as it is not in the first 8MB of the drive and will not let me go any farther. I erased the drive using the disc utility and now what do I need to do? I know on an IBM compatable, I have to format the drive but the disc utility doesn't have that option. What next? Bob

    Bob:
Your iMac must be one referenced in this article.
As Niel indicated, you need to format your HDD so that the first partition is less than 8 GB.
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing a Hard Disk Drive
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
    • Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create tqo partitions.)
    • Click on Options button
    • Select number of partitions in pull-down menu above Volume diagram. You are creating two partitions.
    • Either adjust the size of the volume in the diagram or type in the size field 7.9 GB
    • Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD) for Partition 1 and something like Data for Partition 2
    • Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Optional: Check box to Install OS 9 Drivers
    • Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    • Select Erase tab
    • Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
    • Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    • Click Erase button
    • Quit Disk Utility.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

  • Can you install the needed Flash Player software onto a thumb drive?

I have a large desktop that needs the new Flash Player. However, I am in the country with only dialup. I can take my laptop to the library for fast Internet. Is it possible to download the needed flash player software onto a thumb drive and then transfer that to the desktop. I've downloaded the install file but it gives me no location choice when it begins the install. Working with windows 7 on both machines.
    Thanks

    Hi Ellen,
Yes, you can save the offline version of Flash Player onto a thumb drive and then copy/move it to a computer to install it.  The version downloaded from get.adobe.com/flashplayer is what we refer to the online installer.  It's a shim installer that then downloads and installs Flash Player silently.  The offline installers are posted at the bottom of the Installation problems | Flash Player | Windows page in the 'Still having problems' section.  There are various installers for various browsers.  You'll want to download the file(s) corresponding with the browser(rs) you use.

  • Can't install ; i need administrator rights that i have

    Hello,

They keep telling me that I need administrator rights, but I have and i launch the installation with them.
I tried many ways (like using this as told : http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall/en-us but it didn't work as well, the program is uninstalled - I need to install it again -, and it doesn't appear on the installation programs...) and searched everywhere but without success ; that's why I finally decided to ask here.

  • Duplicate Files Question - Need Expert Advice . . .

I have completed my transition from PC to Mac and have all of my files running on my MacBook Pro. I have synced my iPod Classic to iTunes and have noticed that when I click on "Music" from the iTunes Library the number of files at the bottom states "1924 files," but when I click on "Music" from the Ipod Library it states "1923 files." I have used the "Find Duplicates" command and checked everything 3 times, but have been unable to solve this problem.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I'm probably losing my mind over this issue, but could use some advice. Thank you in advance for your help.

The problem is not necessarily a duplicate, since the duplicates in iTunes will sync as duplicates to the iPod.
Most likely there is one song in your iTunes library which, for some reason, will play in iTunes , but will not sync to the iPod. It may have an odd sampling rate or some similar peculiarity. Normally iTunes will give you an error message at the time of syncing, but I know from experience that it does not always.
If you can manually figure out which track is the problem, you can convert it to a more vanilla format, and then it should sync.
