Can't install Server Admin Tools..

Hello,
I run a MacOS 10.6.4 MacMiniServer and when I try to install the last update of the Server Admin Tools, the installer says, it can't be installed, because OS 10.6 is necessary?¿
Anyone seen that before? The update installs fine on my MacBookPro running 10.6.4 client.
cheers
admilon

I had a similar problem on an Xserve with SAT 10.6.3. I used Pacifist to update to 10.6.4.

  • Can't install Server Admin Tools 10.6.2

Running Snow Leopard Server on a new Mac Mini Server and have had no trouble updating software through Software Update. I would like to install Server Admin Tools 10.6.2 but it is not picked up by Software Update, and when I downloaded it, the installer would not let it install "on this disk. Server administration software must be installed on the same volume as Mac OS X." The volume identified but blocked out IS the Mac OS X volume. Any ideas?

you should ask in the snow leopard server forum.
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=264
however, while I don't run os x server I'm quite sure that you should have server admin installed already if you have a server. that's probably why Software update is not picking it up.

  • Can't install Server Admin 10.5.6 update on G5 10.5.6 server

Not sure if this is by design or if there's something wrong with my setup. I downloaded the 10.5.6 server admin tools update and attempted to run it on my server only to be greeted with the message "You cannot install Server Administration Software on this volume. You can not install the Server Admin Tools on a computer running Mac OS X Server." The update installs fine on a client workstation. I have server admin tools installed on the server already but the version shows 10.5.3. Is there any way to bring the on-server tools up to the same release as the off-server install?

If you've updated the Server to 10.5.6, the tools should be updated as well. If a specific tool didn't change, it's possible that it still shows the 10.5.3 version. Looking through my "Server" folder, only System Image Utility and Workgroup Manager show versions newer than 10.5.3.

  • Server Admin Tools 10.4.7 Won't Install on Leopard Client

When you attempt to install Server Admin Tools 10.4.7 on a Leopard client, when you get to the point about Selecting a Destination, you get a red stop-sign with an exclaimation point. When you select that disk, it says:
"You cannot install Server Administration Software on this volume. You are not allowed to install the software on this disk for an unknown reason."
I tried to open the package and manually extract the Server Admin Tools, but they do not run properly. I still cannot add computers to my managed list.
I have two machines, one that still has Server Admin 10.4.7 that was upgraded to Leopard without upgrading Server Admin. I am still having the problem. It seems that Leopard is creating the problem and not the Server Admin program.......

    Greetings,
Thanks for posting this I was so frustrated but now because of your post I wont have to go half way across the building with a monitor mouse and keyboard just to add a user.
    Thanks so much.
    Sincerely,

  • Lion server VPN + Server Admin Tools 10.7

    Hi,
I followed this guide http://macminicolo.net/lionservervpn to try to set up VPN on my lion mac mini server.
I also used Server Admin Tools 10.7 as instructed in the guide.
After completing the steps in the guide, I cannot get VPN to work, plus I have extra problems as below:
my mini cannot connected to the Internet or local network shares. I found under "Network" setting there was extra VLan created by the system automatically showing as "System Test--Connection error". After I delete this extra connection and revert my Ethernet to its original settings I can connect to the Internet again.
Server Admin Tools 10.7 seem to retains all its settings from the guide on NAT, Firewall etc. doesn't matter if I had removed the current server and created a new server in the left pane. Is there anyway I can restore the Server Admin Tools to its programme defaults? I suspect these settings are affecting my networks and I cannot get rid of them completely.
Would VPN still work if I just set it up in the server app? I haven't been able to get it work this way. I also want to find out is your guide for using the VPN to connect to the Internet off the server as a way to bypass restrictions? Do I have to set it up this way as the guide if I just to want to set up a VPN for simple fireshareing?
What did this command in the guide do to my mini? I was hopping if I cannot get VPN to work, then I should at least reverse the effects of this command. How do I undo this command please? "sudo serveradmin settings vpn:Servers:com.apple.ppp.l2tp:DNS:OfferedServerAddresses:_array_index:0 = "192.168.2.1"

Thanks BrianFL. This helps hugely. Yes, I just to set up a simple filesharing VPN not the kind of VPN that bypass Internet censorship. I use ethernet connection directly from my router yes.
    1. I just need to use the server app to set up a VPN and port forwarding. That is it?
    2. The setting I have made according to the guide with Server Admin Tools seems never going away, even after I deleted the server that has all the settings inside Server Admin Tools. Upon creating a new server inside Server Admin Tools, the new server inherits all the settings from the one I just deleted. Any idea how I can restore to Server Admin Tools's defaults settings?
    3. Even VNC (I use RealVNC) on the mini stopped working after I made changes according to the guide and deleted all the changes I can find. What is the address format for lion's build in VNC (192.168.0.100:5800?) like? I forgot how it is.
    Thanks so much!

  • Server Admin Tools 10.6.3 Won't Install

Each of the Snow Leopard Servers I administer will not install the latest Server Admin Tools 10.6.3. On each server, I'm running 10.6.3 but the Admin Tools installer does not recognize that I'm running OS X Server - it won't install on any of the server volumes.
Server Admin Tools are in /Applications/Server and all updates are in place.
    Apple, what gives?

    Chris-
If your server is running 10.6.3 you don't need to install or update the Admin Tools: you already have the up-to-date Admin Tools. The 10.6.3 Admin Tools installer is for installing or updating the Tools on a non-server Mac.

  • HT1822 Mac OS X server admin tools: non-server editions of Mac OS 10.6?

On my iMac, I am running the installation of OS X that it shipped with + updates up to 10.6.8.  I know there are server admin tools available on the Apple support website, that do stuff like manage groups.  I am looking for a GUI to look at ALL the users, groups, permissions, etc. (including hidden ones like _www for apache) on my system, without having to dig through config files in /etc and/or use the dscl command line utility.
The referenced article says I can find the 10.6 tools on Apple support downloads:
    Mac OS X Server v10.6
To administer Mac OS X Server v10.6, use the Server Admin Tools 10.6 on Mac OS X v10.6. You should match the version numbers of the server, tools, and admin workstation as closely as possible; for example, use Server Admin Tools version 10.6.8 on Mac OS X v10.6.8 to administer Mac OS X Server v10.6.8.
    My questions are:
    1.  Where are the 10.6 tools on the apple support website?  A search turns up versions for everything BUT 10.6.
    2.  Will the 10.6 tools work on 10.6.8 that is not a server edition of Mac OS?

The Server Tools you can download from Apple will install and run on OS X client, but they will only connect to and monitor OS X Server boxes.
So that won't get you where you want.
One command that will help you here - and which is present on OS X Server and OS X client - is dscl.
    dscl . list /users
    For details:
    info dscl
    or
    man dscl
    Or a web search, etc...

  • Server admin tool's help file broken ?

    Hi,
    SL Server 10.6.4
I'm trying to open the help file of the server admin tool but it seems to be broken : 100% CPU, beachball. The same occurs with the file included in the standalone bundle (see http://support.apple.com/downloads/ServerAdmin_Tools_106) installed on a SL 10.6.4 client.
Anybody having the problem too ? Any idea ?

  • Send an alert when Server Admin Tool has logged in?

Is there a way to determine if someone remotely logged in via "Server Admin.app"? The application has no own log file.
I've managed to setup a launchd task that sends an email whenever someone establishes a vpn connection by watching the pppd log file. Can this also be done for that servermgrd process?

The basic idea was to watch the log file of the vpnd daemon and fire a shell script that sends a mail to me, if the most recent line of the log file contains the word "progress". (That word is a unique indicator for a successful connection. Otherwise you will get mails for each status change, too.)
To watch a file change i used Lingon: I logged in via Remote Desktop, launched "Lingon" (freeware - http://sourceforge.net/projects/lingon/) and created a user daemon named "com.myserver.vpnd_watch". Then i've chosen my shell script as the application to be called. In my case it was "/usr/sbin/vpnd_watch.sh". And finally i set the only option "Run it if this file is modified:" as "/var/log/ppp/vpnd.log".
The shell script is quiet simple. To prevent multiple alerts for the same event, it reads a file that contains the date & time of the last login/alert, reads out the date & time of the most recent log file entry containing the word "progress" and compares both. In case of being different, it sends a mail with the log file entries of the last three connections via email and creates a new date file.
    #!/bin/bash
    *date_old=$(cat /Users/myaccount/watch_date.txt)*
    *date_new=$(cat /var/log/ppp/vpnd.log | grep progress | tail -n1 | grep -o -E "[a-zA-Z]{3} [0-9]{2} [0-9]{2}:[0-9]{2}:[0-9]{2}")*
    *if [ "$date_old" != "$date_new" ]; then*
*cat /var/log/ppp/vpnd.log | grep progress | tail -n3 | mail -s "VPN Connection" [email protected]*
    *echo $date_new > /Users/myaccount/watch_date.txt*
    fi
    *exit 0*
(You might have to set permissions accordingly.) The log file entry which matters is something like:
    Fri Nov 19 22:23:43 2010 : L2TP incoming call in progress from 'xxx.xxx.xx.xx'...
This is also the message text of the email, so you can see what the connecting client's IP address is. My mobile phone provider offers a mail to SMS service. So i get an SMS on my iPhone, too. Useful when i don't have an internet connection or no time to check mails.
Binding all administrative traffic to that vpn connection (ssh, ARD and Server Admin Tools) makes sure that you're always informed if some tries to take control and by the IP address if it's your client.

  • Update Server Admin Tools 10.6.3 to 10.6.8

I just discovered that some of my Techs never updated Sever Admin tools since 10.6.3.
We have 10.6.8 servers so that isn't good!
I downloaded the 10.6.8 Server Admin Tools DMG and have tried to update the 10.6.3 Server Admin Tools. (10.6.8 clients)
However the update doesn't work. WGM will still say 10.6.3 and Server Admin says 10.6.5.
I have tried trashing the whole Server folder too.
I'm wondering if I have to update to like 10.6.5 1st or is it someting else entirely?
    Thanks!

Easiest Confirmation: match the versions of the server tools against what's installed on the OS X Server box.
AFAIK, the Server Tools client software usually updates through Software Update once it's been installed, so I'm not sure why you're seeing old versions.
Or if you're seeing old versions, for that matter - I just checked a current 10.6.8 OS X Server box, and the installed version of WGM is listed as: Version 10.6.3 (361.3.1)
    Looks like you're current.

  • Does Apple plan to stop development of OSX server as there is no server admin tools for OSX 10.8 so far?

I have been waiting for the OSX 10.8 server admin tools to config my ML server for few months. I think Apple is not interest to develop server products.  Please tell me is this the fact so that I can change to other server solution. At the mean time, who can tell me where to find a commnd line manual or document so that I can config the server for using different port for pop and smtp and other configuration.

What tools are you looking for? Server.app is the only configuration utility for Mountain Lion. All of the functionality that was formerly in Server Admin.app has been moved into Server.app.

  • Can't install Server Essentials because it is not currently available from the Software Update server?

    Hi Guys,
I have just purchased Mac OS X Lion Server. When I launch the Server App I am told I need to download additional software but once the App attempts to do so I get this message "Can't install Server Essentials because it is not currently available from the Software Update server".
I looked around on the internet and I found a few vague comments stating I may need to insert commands into the Terminal. Can anybody help me please?

Had the same message myelf but it is there. Somebody posted a link to it, will see if I can find it......
    Thought so, Karlegas found it.

  • Server Install: "Can't install Server Essentials"

We just purchased a brand new Mac Pro to use as a server, however the Server app refuses to install. The app was purchased directly from the app store, and when I run the installer I get the error "Can't install Server Essentials because it is not currently available from the Software Update server."
I read in another thread that this was solved by creating a new network location and removing the old one. This solution did not work for me. I've tried connecting via both wifi and ethernet and neither solved it (there is also no firewall, so the domain isnt blocked or anything- the app store and software update both seem to work fine).
I also read that you need to install server on 10.7.0 or it won't work. Well, that is completely unnacceptable since the Mac Pro came with 10.7.3 preinstalled, and the recovery partition will only install the most recent version. The direct links to the ServerEssentials.pkg are also dead, so that solution is out. Any ideas?

Same problem. Just redeemed my Apple Developer code. I'd also like access to the actual .DMG or .PKG files for the install but it seems that the AppStore revoked that capability and the old methods to access those files no longer work. Come on guys...
