Can't install Startpage search engine plug in.

When I attempt to install Startpage search engine I get this message: "Sorry, you need a Mozilla-based browser (such as Firefox) to install a search plugin"
I DO already have Firefox 4 installed and am using it to install Startpage plugin.
How can this problem be resolved???

Ok, I was able to successfully install Startpage search engine by going directly to the Startpage website.
The problem exists only when attempting installation directly through Firefox add-ons.

  • Error message trying to install new search engines

I am running Firefox 19.0.2 installed yesterday on a new desktop PC at the office. (Old PC failed to boot on Monday.) I have completed most of my customization without difficulty. However, when I try to install new search engines, it doesn't seem to matter which one, I get a pop-up error message:
"Sorry, you need a Mozilla-based browser (such as Firefox) to install a search plug-in."
I had no problems installing new search engines under Firefox 16 3rd quarter of last year when I started this job. Why am I unable to install search engines in FF 19?

Hello lafritz65, '''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    thank you

Try to install that search engine in Safe Mode if it doesn't work in normal mode.
Start Firefox in <b>[[Safe Mode | Safe Mode]]</b> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.
*'''Windows/Mac''': Go to Help > Restart with add-ons disabled
*'''Linux''': Run ''firefox -safe-mode'' in the Terminal/Konsole

  • How can I remove the search engine called White smoke

I unintentionally added the white smoke toolbar. After successfully deleting the toolbar, the search engine remains. How can I take this search engine off my computer?

Try to use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.
Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
You can do a search on the <b>about:config</b> page for prefs that are referring to the White smoke server/domain and reset them via the right-click context menu.

  • Firefox tells me it can harm my computer and when I accept it it says that maybe I don't have permissions to access it. It all started when I accidentaly installed "Babylon" search engine tool bar, when I removed it, the system started blocking Firefox

I accidentally installed the Babylone search engine tool bar while dowloading a program and when I realized that Firefox had been substituded I tried to get back and even ran a restore for the system. Since then, everytime I try to reisnstall Firefox, there is a message that says that Firefox can harm my system and when I ignore it, it says that maybe I don't have permits or licenses for it. I am frustrates as even the menu bar from my alternative search engine, Google Chrome, has disappeared.
Please write back and tell me what to do

You may also need to create a new profile in case more files were damaged by closing down Firefox that way.

  • I can't get any search engine to take me to a site I click on, but all re-direct me. I've gone thru all the troubleshooting I can find.

While using Firefox none of the search engines will connect to a site I click on. All re-direct to something else. Vary rarely, a pop-up bar says firefox did not allow...., but I still cannot get to any site or page by clicking on the link. The only way I can get anywhere is by copy/paste in the address bar. I have tried all the troubleshooting I can find, but nothing changes this.

  • Why can't I change SEARCH ENGINES?

I use the Google Searchbar ALL THE TIME. ...and when Wolfram Alfa came out, I thought about changing it, just to check it out, but couldn't easily find a solution. And now that Bing has come out, I'd really love to put it through it's paces... but there's no way to make it my searchbar, save for installing some shareware program! (I already have enough on my computer, lol).
I've heard of some terminal hacks, but they seem really complicated.
I don't want it to be my HOME PAGE, I want it to be my SEARCH BAR!
Has ANYONE heard of ANYTHING besides yet another shareware program...?
    Grumble grumble.
More importantly, wouldn't Microsoft be SUED by the EU for not allowing this kind of "search choice"?

Wolfram|Alpha isn't a search engine, it's a computation knowledge engine, so you can't use that as your search engine. If you want to use Bing instead of Google, you'll need to install Glims, which is free. There are no Terminal hacks for this; it must be done by modifying Safari at launch time; thus, the requirement of a third party extension.
Microsoft would not be sued by the EU because there is nothing stopping a user from using the search engine of their choice. There's no requirement that it be available in the search field of the browser; that's just a convenience.

  • In FF4 the opensearch detection does not seem to work. how can I add a search engine , that has an opensearch xml but no plugin?

if you go to a webpage with an opensearch link tag like "&lt;link rel="search" type="application/opensearchdescription+xml...." FF3.x highlighted the small arrow left of the search box and you could add the search engine. this does not seem to work in FF4.
If a searchengine for example for the intranet, does not offer a plugin, just the opnesearch xml, how can one add it to the search engines in FF4?

You do not get the blue glow on the search engine icon in Firefox 4, but you should still see the "Add ... site" entry in the menu if you click the search engines icon on the Navigation Toolbar.

Safari only gives me three choices for a search engine:
       Google
       Yahoo

I would like it to default to StartPage, or maybe even Duck Duck Go.
How do I add sites to the drop down menu?

Glims is a 3rd party addon that will let you add many different search engines to Safari's menu bar:
Just check those you want to use in the Safari/Glims preference pane:

  • How can I do a search engine in a digital publishing?

    Hi,
I need to do something like a search engine in a catalogue with so many pages.
    How can I do?
    Kind Regards.

For what I have understood some time ago, what Bob means says is that DPS nowadays lacks the ability of indexing content and its precise location in the app. No native indexing.
So, to achieve something like that you have to build that content  in HTML and build some kind of index that points to the precise location of each item to be retrieved and them make that work with the needed buttons and form fields and...
Something to be done with HTML and coding so that this can be inserted and retrieved in the app built with DPS. It's like building an enclosed HTML site and then embed it into DPS.
    Is it so, Bob?

  • Can you change the search engine in iPad Safari?

iPad Safari is set to use Google in the upper right search field.
Can you change to another search engine other than Google like you can in regular Safari on or Macs?

Yes, and those might be available through some of the alternative browsers available in the App Store. In addition, iOS provides a range of ways you can filter web content there in Settings. I've not played with it but it looks as though you could exert some control that way.
