Can't Join our 5GHz Network

Hello,
This morning my iPhone 5 could not join a home 5Ghz network.  Previous to this morning there were no issues joining the network although it seemed to default to the 2.4GHZ network we have.  We have an Airport Extreme Base station that is about four years old and it has a dual band radio.  We therefore have a 2.4 and a 5.0 GHz network.
I believe the problem is in my iPhone because.
My wife's iPhone5, her iPad3, and my iPad 4 can join this network.
Running Airport utility from my iMac it reports "excellent" connections to the base station and four airport express devices.
I tried a reset of the iPhone by turning it off (swipe the red arrow).  I also tried a hard reset (hold down the on/off button and the home button until the screen goes black).  Neither of those resets helped.
The iPhone will readily join the 2.4 GHz network then continue to search for our other network.  When it finds the 5GHz network and I choose it, I get a spinning gear and nothing happens.  Occasionally it will ask for a password and sometimes it will report that it is unable to joinn the 5GHz network.
The iPhone is running IOS 6.1.3 as are our other devices.  I recently added Apple's two factor authentication but can't imagine how that would interfere with the WiFi function.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Your thoughts and advice are gratefully accepted.
Cheers,
Jay

What worked for me was a fix I found on a somewhat similar thread for the iPhone 4S.  Settings>5GHz Network>Proxxy.  I turned it from off to auto.  The next time I tried to access this network it asked for my password but then connected.  We'll see if this is a consistent fix.

My wife's i-pad 3 was just downloaded with the latest iOS6 and she's now unable to join our wifi network at home.  Can anyone help?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, can't join existing wireless network with AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. working fine with TM

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM.  My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore.  Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.  I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads.  Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system.  I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system.  But are there other options to connect the new TC.  Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above.  after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light  or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working.  Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant.  I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work.  The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network.  Are we going backwards?
    Thanks!
    lennydas

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.
    I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC.  the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.
    Thanks again!
You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

  • Our iPhones can't find our wireless network, but our MBPs can?

Using AirPort Express. Me and my friend's MBP can connect to the wireless just fine, and we can see the wireless network name on our MBPs.
But when we use our iPhones, our wireless network is nowhere to be found, tried resetting to factory settings and restarting modem etc. Same problem happens to other devices i.e. other laptops, other phones, even Apple products, ONLY our MBPs can connect for some odd reason.
Any ideas on solving this? Thanks...

Done! I looked through some other threads and someone suggested resetting the entire AirPort with the reset button on the actual device instead of in AirPort Utility. Try that! Works completely fine now! Good luck

  • I can't join my wifi network on Macbook Pro

My Macbook Pro wont join to my WI-FI network, it just says 'Unable to join WI-FI network'. I know the password is correct, and the internet is working on other devices.

    Hi jimkoz501,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your Wi-Fi connection.
If you've already tried the "Forget this Network" option for your current Wi-Fi network, the next step would be to Reset Network Settings.
This is one of the troubleshooting steps in the article below:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398?viewlocale=en_US
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Note: This will reset all network settings including: previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords, recently used Bluetooth accessories, VPN and APN settings.
I hope this information helps ....
    Have a great day!

  • MacBook Air can't join Wi-Fi networks

My MacBook Air (2013 model, 1.3 Ghz Intel Core i5, 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3, OS X Version 10.9.2) which I received less than a week ago was working fine. Until last night. My latop will now not connect to ANY wifi networks. It's sees the networks but when I try to manually join one it says "The wifi network ... could not be joined" when I then run diagnostics it says "Wifi not associated" and "review wifi best practices". Not helpful. Can anyone please tell me how to fix it? If I can! I haven't found any issues similar to mine yet. So, hoping there's an easy fix.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • How can we put our wireless networks on a schedule

We have two 5508s in a boarding school environment and about 5 wireless networks. Administration wants to know how can we shut down the student networks @ 11:30pm and then have them come on @ 6:00am. Othern than doing it manually is there another way?

create a time based ACL and apply it on the switch that is connecting to the AP. Keep the following in mind, LWAPP is UDP, the Data is 12222 and LWAPP Control is 12223.
With ACL block the data path but keep the control path up so AP(s) keep joined to the wlc.

  • My Xbox 360 can't join my wireless network

I have an Apple wireless network but I can't get my Xbox to resolve an IP address when it tries to join the network. Other devices join the network with no problems. I've even got my Xbox to join my neighbours Apple wireless network. There must be some DHCP setting I need to change.

    Yes, using WEP.
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.
Choosing a password for networks that use Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108058
The Xbox can log on, just can't resolve an IP
It is probably able to see the network, but is failing to authenticate which means it won't be assigned an IP address.

  • When my daughter connects to our home wifi she has to be within 5 feet of the modem, once she moves upstairs she loses wifi connection and then when choosing the network, it can't find our wifi network?

When my daughter tries to connect to our home wifi, she has to be in the basement within 5 feet of our modem.  Once she comes upstairs she loses the connection.  All of our other devices connect to the wifi on all levels of our house, including her Dad who also got an iphone 4 and her ipod works as well as her brother's ipod and my blackberry.  I have tried resetting the network settings to no avail. I have already had our modem rebooted through our internet provider so I know the signal is good (as well as all other devices connect to wifi) I am losing sleep over this and she is quite frustrated so any help would be appreciated.  I'm starting to wonder if it's a defect in her phone???

Is her iPhone in a case by any chance?  If so, remove the case and try again.  How does her iPhone work in free Wi-Fi locations?
    Try resetting the iPhone...
Press and hold the Home and On/Off buttons simultaneously until you see the Apple logo, then release.  This may take up to 10 seconds.  This is the equivalent of a re-boot and you will not lose any data.
If none of the above work take it to an Apple store or AASP for evaluation.  She will not be charged folr this and they will suggest a solution if there is a fault.

  • Using Mini DVI How can I join a television network in work?

I am currently trying to connect my macbook to the network of TVs in one of the pubs that I work in, this is for video graphics within software I use to DJ (serato scratchlive). I have tried to link the Mini DVI to VGA to a VGA to s-video/Composite lead and get nothing on the screens but blurred black & white scrolling. I have linked up to the projector just using VGA extension leads and it works fine but there is no VGA input in the video matrix system that the bar use's. The current connection I have to use are; Composite & BNC. For now i'm just using the main dance floor projector but I need to be able to use all the screens and this has to go through the matrix. Anyone with a similar problem or if you know how I can get around this, any help would be gratefully received.
    First time poster!

    Hello All,
I had the same problem has everyone else on this forum and I had google the problem in question. I found tons of posting about the issue and saw many different solutions. Here are few link to other site with similar postings on the internet:
    http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r18562030-2Wire-2700HGS-Santa-Rosa-MacBook-Pro
Here are the common solutions I saw:
    1. Use $ in front of the wep password
    2. Use 0x or 0X in front of the wep password
    3. Make the 2wire public
    4. Change the 2wire channel to 7
    5. Disable WEP key and use WAP
I have become an expert with wireless by end of this problem. I even learn how to heck the wep key. I even use a network monitoring tool to figure out what was going on with the issues. The bottem line is that the two vendor should work together to reslove these issues for end users. Apple and 2wire should come up with a soultion for all these users having issue with network connection. That's my 2 cent and professional opinion. They are selling a product that does work out of the box with each other product. You have to change setting many different way to reslove this issue base on the hardware models. And it's different for each situation.
I found that the security setting on 2wire and apple is not compatiable out of the box for my situation. I had to play with the authentication methods. I also found out, within my situation that Macbook Pro didn't not like WEP-Shared on 2wire. It wanted WEP-Open. In my case, the public with no security did not work from the get go. I had to reboot the MacBook using commandoption+PR and let it boot 3 times for the no security to work with 2wire.
anyways, have fun! This is very hard problem for your average Joe. You just have to make single change at time. Don't make too many chage to fix the issue.

  • TC can't join existing wireless network

    Hi,
yesterday I played around with my TC and tried to extend my existing wirelss network. Therefore I changed the settings from "Connect to wireless network" to "Extend a wireless network". After I found out that this feature only works on only n-enabled networks I wanted to set everything back to "Connect to wireless network". But this option disappeared! And I can't get it back on my network.
What did I wrong? Can I reset everything (keep my Backups) and connect it again? Of course, I didn't save my configuration at first hand! The software version is 7.3.2
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

Okay, some days later I found out that the feature I was looking for is not provided in the "expert mode" where you can tweak the settings on your own. Nope, "Connect TC with an existing network" is only provided in the assisted setup.
A little bit astonishing not to list all possibilities in the expert mode but that's life...

  • Xbox/PC can't connect to 5gHz network (E4200 v2)

My network is discoverable, but my machines will not connect (they were connected previously).  They can connect to the 2.4gHz network, but not the 5 (I use the 5 for streaming media and gameplay).  Windows 7 says it's unable to connect.
Thanks for helping a networking n00b.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

According to the scenario try the following combination of steps:
A] With the help of Cisco Connect Software (if at all you have installed the router with the help of this software)
1] Open the software and go to the option which says "Router Settings"
2] Then click on the option which says "Advanced Settings" which will take you to the router's configuration page.
3] Then go to the Wireless tab, keep network mode as mixed,
For Channel Settings of 5 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 40 or 161...
B] If you haven't installed Cisco Connect then you can log on to the router's user interface using it's default IP address in the browser which is 192.168.1.1 and type in 'admin' as the password leaving the username field blank. This will take you to the router's web interface and then follow steps as mentioned above to make the changes.
Second, update the drivers for the wireless card of the Laptop and Xbox then check the connectivity status.

  • Can not join timed access network

I have an Extreme and open the network to a MacBook Pro (client) via "add wireless clients", "_first attempt_".
The MacBook Pro passes its MAC address and description to the AirPort Utility (hosted on a Mac Book). As soon as the MAC address records in the "Access" display - the MacBook Pro looses the WiFi link.
I have an Airport Express that is also part of the network - acting as a print router. I have no good reason to suspect the Express' interference in the above process - but do so in any case!
    Suggestions appreciated please.

Please explain in more detail what you mean by the above, particularly the part about "the MacBook Pro passes its MAC address" to AirPort Utility running on a different computer. That doesn't match how I've seen the "timed access" feature of AirPort units work.

    Maiko,
I'm confess I'm still trying to get a handle on your problem. You do a fantastic job of describing it ... but I'm just trying to picture it accurately in my head.
I think, were I in your shoes, I'd begin by looking at what the debug page has to say for the specific destination in which you're interested in fixing. In other words, I'm not clear on where, exactly, this destination points ...
    Destination illinois.edu.1945806043
Is that your site, or the division within your site that you want to fix? "Normally", you do not need to specify a site handle to get to your site within your transfer CGI ... if you say "uillinois.edu", it's enough to transfer your users to iTunes U ... but every site still has a handle, and you could, if you wanted to, actually specify it in your transfer CGI. For example, this:
    Destination uic.edu.1139051993
is for my entire site ... it's my site handle. Whereas this:
    Destination uic.edu.1991288441
is for a division within my site ... but it's impossible to tell the difference between "site" and "division" from just the handle (I mean, if I didn't say "this is a site" and "this is a division", there'd be no way for you to know). So when I look at your creds and permissions on your debug page, I can't quite tell if they give you download access for your site, or for the specific division you want to fix. If you could open the debug page with your division as destination (or confirm that that's what we're looking at), it'd rule out some things.
