Can't just drag to the Trash

Since reinstalling my Lion, the Trash has been strange. I can't just drag stuff there without getting a dialogue box telling me it will be deleted immediately. That requires me to click my agreement. Same thing happens if I right-click my mouse and choose the Trash option. So my Trash basket stays empty, and I go through a two-step process with every file or program I want to be rid of.

I found the Terminal and then didn't know what to do.
Launch Terminal (from Utilities) and a window will be displayed.
You copy/paste each of the commands Niel listed one at a time and hit return. So here they are again (but I slightly changed some of them):
mkdir -p ~/.Trash
Hit return. Nothing will happen. You will just see another prompt on the terminal.
sudo chown $UID ~/.Trash
Hit return. You will be prompted for your admin password. Enter it. Nothing will type in the terminal window as you type your admin password. Hit return again. You may see a bunch of warning messages. Ignore them and answer yes to anything it may ask.
sudo chmod 700 ~/.Trash
Hit return. Again because of sudo you may get another prompt for you admin password (or may not this time).
Now log out and log back in. Hopefully you're trash will work as expected.
Of course another way is to simply rm the ~/.Trash and log out and log back in and the finder would recreate the .Trash but I don't want to show the exact way that is done do to the dangers involved with novice terminal users. I'm just mentioning it here for the sake of completeness.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

I can not move files to the trash.

I can not move files to the trash. When I drag the file to the trash it does not move, but it does appear in the trash and when I empty it, the file is erased. When I go back to my files, the file I just deleted is still there. I keep getting the "startup disk is full" message so I need to delete files, but I can't. Anyone know a solution to this?

try getting a external drive such as a usb flash drive or a hard drive to transfer the files from the startup disk, and free up space.

I do not have permission to delete my trash. It only shows trash when my external hard drive is connected. If it is not connected, the trash empties. What can I do to have the trash empty when the hard drive is connected?

When emptying my trash, I get "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." (I always have a hard drive connected and have just found out that if I disconnect the hard drive, none of that trash shows in the trash can....so there has to be some correlation with the hard drive. I have had my mac for a year, and never had this problem before though with the hard drive hooked up and all the trash being able to empty completely.) How can I get rid of the trash. FYI - I do not have the time machine hooked up, so I know that is not an issue. Thanks for any ideas to try!

Tom at the Genius Bar told me that Option Delete would work. It does not.
I had to upgrade to iTunes 11.1.(I26) because it is required with OS7 on my iPod Touch (5th Gen). I have tried shutting down iTunes, then shutting down the entire system. This is the first in many visits that the Genius Bar gave me a solution that did not work.
This is a big awkward computer locked to my desk. I would rather not unlock it and then carry it through a shopping center to the Genius Bar if i can avoid oit.
When I installed iTunes 11.1, I discovered that Ihad to resubscribe to virtually all of the podcasts that I had previously been subscribed to. That was a surprise.

I did not read the rather long post. If you wish to reinstall OS X 10.4, use your software install DVD. Backup is essential. To minimize your risk, I would use an archive and install:

In that way, you will have a fresh copy of OS X and your current settings will be preserved.
Incidentally, I do not agree that the printer problem is best solved by reinstalling OS X. I have had HP printers for sometime and, on one occasion, had difficulty after an upgrade. HP technical support walked me through uninstalling all traces of the HP driver and then reinstalling.

Can I just drag and drop song files into iTunes?

I have about 50 folders on my PC (Windows 7), each containing between 5 and 15 songs. These are under My Music/ on the PC.
On my Mac, I have about 1000 songs with about 25 Playlists. Some of these Playlists on the Mac contain the same songs as in the folders of the PC.
I want to transfer the songs from the PC to the Mac. I did not want to go through them one by one on each computer to see which of the files on the PC were already on the Mac.
I can look at the PC (My Music) folders and the Mac (iTunes) Playlists side by side on the Mac.
If I see a missing song on the Mac Playlist folder, can I just drag and drop that particular song from the PC folder into the Mac Playlist?
If I see that a Playlist does not exist that would need to be available for the specific folder contents on the PC, can I create the Playlist on the Mac and then, drag and drop all of the songs from the PC folder to the new Playlist?
Would this be the easiest way to accomplish the transfer of the songs?

Well, what I see happing is this: Tapping edit and checking the first message brings up the “Delete” option. Holding it until the red message “Delete Message” appears, then letting go of the red button and tapping the checked button makes the “Delete Message” message go away. The checked message is still checked with an option to delete just that message. Tap the checked message again just cancels the whole process and I’m back to square one.
However, if I check a message that is part of a thread of messages and tap Delete, I have the option of deleting all messages in the thread.
Perhaps the fact that I’m using the 3rd generation of the iPad is the problem, but your suggestion isn’t working.

Can I just drag OSX over to another HD?

After re-initialising my external HD, can I just drag the system folder over to my external HD, in order to have a mirror system on the ext. HD from which I can boot? I would rather do that than installing from CD if I could, because there have been many updates to OSX since my install disks, and I would rather not have to download hundreds of megabytes of updates to make it current.
If I want to drag OSX across, which folders are the ones to drag?
Does the "restore" function in Disktools perform a similar task, ie copy OSX to a target disk?

Unfortunately you can't. What you need to do is to use a cloning tool to do this such as SuperDuper! (my recommendation)…

It is not necessary to delete your old wireless networks first, but doing so may eliminate confusion. If you wish to do that, open System Preferences > Network, and select Wi-Fi from the left column. Click the Advanced... button, then select your old wireless networks and delete them with the "–" (minus) button. Make sure the "Remember networks this computer has joined" remains checked.
OK then Apply.
This prevents your Mac from searching for your previous network which will no longer exist.
A new Express creates an open wireless network that you must select before you can configure it. It appears in your Wi-Fi menu like this:
Select it. AirPort Utility will load and walk you through its configuration.
Edit: If you are really using OS X 10.5.1 as shown in your profile, the above screenshot is not applicable. Instead, select the network called "Apple network nnnnnn" and then launch AirPort Utility.
