Can't launch Mail

Mail has stopped working. It crashed this morning, I had to use Force Quit, and ever since then... nothing. If I click on it, it bounces in the dock for a while, but never launches. If I try to open it from the Applications folder it does the "file opening" swooshy animation, but never opens.
I've tried Disk Utility, I've cleaned up with Macaroni (now, there's an odd phrase), I've restarted numerous times, I've tried starting it up while holding down the "shift" key. Nothing.
Any suggestions?
PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

You should start considering backing up as much as you can in case things get worse and you end up being unable to use the computer at all...
If you have an external HD with the same or a later version of Mac OS X installed from which to boot your Mac, or have access to another Mac and with a FireWire port to which connect your Mac in Target Disk Mode, you may try to repair the disk that way.
Actually, starting up from another disk isn’t strictly necessary — but it’s the recommended way to do it. Here are some additional links that you may find helpful if starting up from another disk is not an option:
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
And you may also purchase one of the third-party disk utilities available out there, such as DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, or Drive Genius — which you may end up having to purchase anyway if Disk Utility reports filesystem issues it cannot fix and erasing the disk and restoring from a backup is not an option.

    When Apple programs fail to launch but third-party programs work fine, there is a strong chance that you have inadvertently disabled some needed system font with FontBook or other font manager program. I suffered this after trying to shut off fonts I thought were surplus.
    If you have been playing with FontBook, return to it and make sure ALL font are active. Although you'll have to deal with some oddball fonts in your font menus, that should get thing going.
    If FontBook shows no disabled fonts, you may have a corrupted font involved.

    I haven't changed any prefs, only clicked Safari as mail was being launched.

    Sorry... Apple IDs cannot be merged...
    I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
    Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

    The Mail version for your machine is 4.6 (1085)   You can get it via the Combo updater.  Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1

  • Grayed out Mail - can't launch!

    I created a new user account to share my machine with a friend. The process went swimmingly until we tried to open Mail. A pane appeared requesting: Full Name-Email address-Incoming Mail Server-Account Type (POP)-User Name-Password-Outgoing Mail Server.
    Having successfully created a Gmail Account for my friend, we entered all the information required in the above pane.
    For our trouble, we got the interminable dreaded spinning beach-ball.
    Hoping to go around this roadblock, we went to Mail menu > Preferences and discovered Preferences was grayed out. We were defeated, couldn't figure out how to launch Mail!
    Need some heavy duty help.

    Got it! Went to View menu and chose "SHOW Deleted Messages", and it went away.

  • Can Not Open Mail CNOM

    -The application Mail quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Relaunch to launch the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.
    The above error message appears after I attempt to open the Mail application. Recently the Mail icon was a question mark, however it was found but still clicking on it I can not open Mail. After attempting to click Relaunch twice in a row, during a third time the follow error message appears:
    -Do you want to resent application settings for Mail? The application quit unexpectedly after itwas relaunched. Resetting the application settings may fix the problem. You will be givethe opportunity to restore your original settings when you quit the applications.
    When I click Reset and Relaunch I am brought back the error mentioned I previously encountered first, ergo the whole problem beings again, and the same thing happens again when I click Relaunch.
    When I click Ignore or Do Not Relaunch the application quits, of course. When I click Report the application sends a 'report' page.
    Somebody please help me get my mail working again. Thank you.

    Really? Nobody has any idea?

  • Can't open Mail, Index is broken!

    Hi, I need some help.
    I don't use Mail on my iMac or Macbook Pro Retina but need it to run some AppleScripts, so I tried to open it on my Macbook Pro Retina and iMac but can't open it on either, it just comes up with the below:
    First:
    To use the new features in Mail, your existing Mail messages need to be imported into the new version the first time you use Mail. this might take a few minutes. You won't be able to use Mail until the import is finished.
    Click Continue to import your messages now, or click Cancel to import later.
    If you click cancel, it just closes and if you click continue it does the below:
    The Upgrade Failed
    An error occurred during the upgrade. Click continue to launch the Mail Import Assistant, which will help you create a new library and import your existing messages.
    So I then click continue and this is what appears:
    You Mail Index has been damaged. To repair it, quit Mail.
    Mail will repair the index the next time you open Mail. Your mailboxes and messages will be preserved.
    So I then click Quit. It shuts down and then if you try to open it again, it just does the same thing again and again.
    I have managed to fix the one on my Macbook Pro Retina by following what some people suggested on other posts, what worked was deleting the com.apple.mail folder inside Library/Containers. And I haven't had a problem since but with the iMac once this file is deleted, it allows you to go through the whole set up for a new account and then goes into the same error pattern as mentioned above. I have also tried deleting the Envelope Index inside Library/Mail/V2/Mail Data and in the Mail folder too, but nothing seems to work.
    Can someone please adivse as to how I can re set my Mail, there is nothing in there so it can be rebooted or something like that. I just don't understand why I have managed to fix in one computer and not in the other one !!
    Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sally

    Quit Mail. Then select
     ▹ Force Quit...
    from the menu bar. A small window will open with a list of running applications. Mail may appear in that list, even though you quit it. If so, select it and press return. Close the window.
    In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
    from the menu bar. Move the following items from the folder that opens to the Trash (some may not exist):
    Caches/com.apple.mail
    Saved Application State/com.apple.mail.savedState
    Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr
    Containers/com.apple.mail
    Mail
    Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (OS X 10.7 only)
    Preferences/com.apple.mail.searchhistory.plist (OS X 10.7 only)
    Note: you are not moving the Mail application. You’re moving a folder named “Mail.”
    Log out and log back in. Launch Mail. It will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Go through the setup process with one of your accounts.

  • On 10.4.11 Mac Mail I get this: Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full. You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unnedded documents or move documents to another volume. I can't open mail.

    On 10.4.11 iMac Mac Mail I get this message: "Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full. You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unneeded documents or move documents to another volume." I can't open mail to do this. I have reinstalled software but no effect. How do I get into Mail to delete?

    Found this on the "more like this" Worked like a charm!
    With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
    Go to Home > Library > Mail > Envelope Index. Move the Envelope Index file to the Desktop.
    Launch Mail and you will be prompted to import mailboxes. Select OK and allow the import process to complete.
    After confirming all mailboxes were successfully imported and available, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old Envelope Index file from the Desktop and this should resolve the problem.

  • How can I stop Mail from automatically archiving every incoming and outgoing email?

    Mail is automatically archiving every incoming and outgoing message, and then synch'ing that with my iPhone -- thus sucking up all available memory.  I have never asked it to automatically archive everything, and can't figure out how to stop it.  Any ideas?

    Launch Mail.
    Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced
    Uncheck the box beside "Include when automatically checking for new messages".
    Do it for all accounts if you want.
    Best.

  • Can't get Mail to work - I get the spinning wheel and Mail freezes.  I have to Force Quit it.  How do I fix this?

    Can't get Mail to work - I get the spinning wheel and Mail freezes.  I have to Force Quit Mail .  How do I fix this problem?

    Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
    Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
    from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
    Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
    Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Communication Channel - 'Launch mail' launching the desktop again

    Hi All,
    Here's a brief on my infrastructure -
    1. Messaging Server 5.2 running on a High Availability setup managed by Sun CLuster 3.1
    2. Box1 - Portal Server 6.1 on App Server 7 platform edition.
    3. Box2 - Same as Box 1
    I have communication channels installed on the portal instances on both the boxes and have configured the Mail channel to connect to the Messaging instance.
    I am able to see my Inbox snapshot in the Mail channel on my desktop. But, when I click on the 'Launch Mail' link inside the channel, instead of authenticating and displaying my Mailbox, it launches a new browser window that displays the same portal desktop itself. It's basically linking back to the desktop.
    Any idea whats going on here and where the problem could lie??
    Cheers,
    Vinod.

    Hi all.
    This is what I have to make calendar and mail to work perfect with SSO against the identity server. The info below works on JES2004Q2.
    Hope it could be of any help.
    Fix Messaging server SSO against identity server:
    su - mailsrv
    cd /opt/SUNWmsgsr/sbin
    ./configutil -o local.webmail.sso.amnamingurl -v "http://FQDNOFFIDENTITYGOESHERE:PORT/amserver/namingservice"
    ./configutil -o local.webmail.sso.amcookie -v iPlanetDirectoryPro
    ./configutil -o local.webmail.sso.singlesignoff -v 1
    ./configutil -o service.http.ipsecurity -v no
    ./configutil -o store.admins -v admin
    ./configutil -o service.http.allowadminproxy -v yes
    Fix Calendar server SSO against identity server:
    cd /opt/SUNWics5/cal/bin/config
    vi ics.conf and change the following....
    local.calendar.sso.amcookiename = "iPlanetDirectoryPro"
    local.calendar.sso.amnamingurl = "http://FQDNOFFIDENTITYGOESHERE:PORT/amserver/namingservice"
    local.calendar.sso.logname = "am_sso.log"
    local.calendar.sso.singlesignoff = "yes"
    service.http.ipsecurity = "no"
    local.authldapbasedn = "ROOTSUFFIXGOESHERE"
    render.xslonclient.enable = "no"
    service.http.allowadminproxy = "yes"
    And do not forget to configure the proxy auth in the SSO in the portal gui. Otherwise you can't click on "launch" to start a new window with web mail or web calendar from the portal gui.
    Note:
    There is also a known bug with the portal 6.1 that give errors in the rewriter of the gateway so the webmail wont work properly when klicking "launch". If portal 6.1 is used..... apply the patch.
    Regards
    Per-Olov

  • MAIL: The upgrade failed - error occurred during upgrade. launching Mail Import assistant  to repair damaged index did not work

    After installing Yosemite, the Mail required an upgrade. the upgrade was completed but resulted in a message: The upgrade failed. error occurred during the upgrade, check continue to launch Mail Import Assistant.
    This resulted in an instruction: Your mail index has been damaged. To repair it quit mail. Mail will repair index next time you open mail.
    Following this instruction resulted in the same failure message being repeated continuously.
    How do I proceed to upgrade the Mail app.?

    If doing as the alert directs (relaunching Mail) has no effect, see below.
    The new version of Mail stores its database in a different format than the old one, so the database has to be converted before Mail can use it. Sometimes the conversion fails because the old database is corrupt. The easy way to recover is to discard the old database and start afresh. You can do that without losing any messages, provided that:
    ☞ All your incoming mail accounts are on an IMAP or Exchange server
    ☞ You store sent messages on the server
    ☞ You don't have any "On My Mac" mailboxes
    Most well-known independent mail services such as iCloud and Gmail are based on IMAP. On the other hand, ISP-hosted mail services almost always use POP. If your ISP is one of your mail service providers (or the only one), you probably can't use this procedure. Ask for further instructions in that case.
    If you know that the conditions above are satisfied, continue as follows.
    Quit Mail if it's running. Back up all data.
    Open the Library folder in your home folder by holding down the option key and selecting
              Go ▹ Library
    from the Finder menu bar. Inside it is a subfolder named "Mail." Move that folder to the Desktop. You're not moving the Mail application; you're moving a folder named "Mail."
    Open the Internet Accounts pane in System Preferences and recreate your mail accounts other than iCloud with the same settings as before. To recreate an iCloud mail account, all you have to do is open the iCloud preference pane and check the box marked Mail.
    Launch Mail. If all goes well, your mailboxes should be restored automatically. The messages will be downloaded from the servers, so it may take a long time if you have very large mailboxes. Some people have mailboxes in the gigabyte range, and that may be a problem if your bandwidth usage is metered.
    If the mailboxes are created successfully, you can delete the folder you moved to the Desktop. You may have to recreate your Mail rules, signatures, and custom stationery. If it's very important to you not to have to do all that, ask for instructions before deleting the folder.
