Can't Load Install Disk

I'm trying to upgrade my MacBook Pro to Leopard. When my MacBook restarts, it ejects the install disk instead of booting from it. Is there a keystroke that I can enter to force the MacBook to load from the install disk?

How can I create a start up disk for a old intel core duo running 10.5.8.. Computer works fine, but can't find install disk. Want to use internal disk drive or USD flash drive.

Try calling 1-800-676-2775.  Give the serial number and thy *may* still burn you new install disks designed just for the hrdware in your system (for a fee, something like $160 per disk).  *May* is only because they may not burn disks for Leopard anymore.
If they do not burn them for you, you can buy Leopard disks off Amazon or eBay for about $200.
Have you considered Snow Leopard?.  Those disks only cost $19 (single user) or $29 (5-user license) through Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE.

• OS X Won't Boot, Can't Load Install DVD

For the last couple of days my mac has been really buggy, hanging, slow boot speed etc.
Until finally yesterday it simply failed to load into OS X.
So I tried the trusted unplug it for a few minutes, I zapped the PRAM, I tried safe mode, I did a hardware test on startup and that was fine. I've tried booting into the install DVD using 'C' and by using Options and selecting it on boot up menu. Sometimes it has limped into the OS where I removed everything in startup, repaired permissions and tried to verify the hard disk, where it said there was an error. I tried to get the install dvd to restart the computer and get into Time Machine but that just hangs, any ideas? I have a fairly recent backup, does Time Machine backup ALL my stuff? Music, Mail personal documents etc?
Cheers
A now bald Tristan

If Disk Utility has told you there are problems with the drive, you must repair them. You didn't mention trying that, you just said you tried to use Time Machine while booted from the install disk. Try booting from the install disk, running Disk Utility from there and clicking the Repair Disk button.
If the disk can't be repaired, you can try a more powerful utility, like [DiskWarrior|http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html] or [TechTool Pro|http://www.micromat.com>. If those don't work, you'll have to just erase the hard drive and reinstall the system from scratch (or restore from a backup).
Note that, even if you repair the problems, files have probably already become corrupt, thus causing the problems you've been experiencing. You may end up having to reinstall anyway, even if repairs are successful, and it would be wise to be cautious with backups, as corruption could have crept into them.

• Can't boot install disk from usb drive

I bought a macbook pro back in late 2007 and up until now im getting ready to sell it. So now while restoring to factory settings, i wiped off the hard drive and i need to reinstall my install discs which i still have. However, the cd drive doenst work on the laptop. It hasnt worked since i can remember. I already imaged the instal disk into a usb flash drive and tried booting from there. When i turn it on and hold "option," it reads the flash drive as a backup, but it wont boot from it. I click the flash drive, and it loads, but then the apple logo gets replaced by a "no symbol."
I have a new macbook pro, but not a firewire cable or an external cd/dvd drive. Anyone know how i can get the old laptop to boot from the usb?
BTW, the install cd's are for tiger, but i installed snow leopard when it came out. Im not sure if i still have the cd for snow leopard, but i dont think that would help since the cd drive doenst work. Do i need to buy an external cd drive to reinstall my operating system?

Well that's your problem you used Tiger and the firmware was changed to prevent booting from the older operating system once you upgraded to Snow Leopard.
You will need a copy of the Snow Leopard disks, the white one's online at Apple will work
Then you need to follow this to make a 10.6 install USB
http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html
Here are the instructions to install Snow Leopard, I advise zero erasing the entire drive first, this will clear any bad sectors and make the install work perfectly when you sell it and not get call back (although the cd drive is dead of course)
You might be able to extract the free iLife off the Tiger disks, then Software Update fully to bring it up to date using Pacifist from CharlesSoft.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
BTW, you can't boot/install off a external optical, only internal.

• Can I use install disk from my Mac mini to upgrade OS on my iMac

I’m currently running OS X v.10.5.8 on my iMac. I’d like to update it to OS X 10.6.
I also have a Mac mini that came with 10.6. Can I just use the install disk that came with my Mac mini to install 10.6 on my iMac?

No you can't. The install discs came with the Mac mini are bundled to Mac minis. So when you try to install with the Mac mini install discs, you'll get an error. You have to get the Snow Leopard package for $29 which is free to install on every Mac matching the system requirements.

• Can't use Install Disk for startup

Hi
Having a perplexing problem with my macbook Dual Core 2GHz that I bought at an auction Starts up fine from it's hard disk. However, as I want to erase the hard drive I was trying to start up from a an OSX install disk. When I put the OSX disk in, select it and and click restart as instructed, the computer shuts down and tries to restart from the disk but then keeps shutting down and restarting until the OSX disk is removed without ever getting to the apple logo. I also tried swapping the hard drive with the same result as well as trying an external boot hard drive (using the option command a startup)- same result again. I thought this might be because the previous owner might have set an open firmware password and tried the removing some RAM and doing the Resetting PRAM trick. This did nothing. Anyone please have any ideas about this as it has become very frustrating

Hi macnaughty and welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are a couple of possibilities here. First, is the install disk the one that came with the computer? Such disks are machine specific, so if the seller gave you one that came with another model of computer, even if it's a MacBook disk, it won't work.
Also, any retail install disk that has an OS on it that is earlier than what came with your MacBook will not work.
Lastly, it is possible that the disk, even though it is the correct one, may be damaged.
You can contact Apple and they will generally be able to get you the correct disk. There is usually a small charge but you'll get what you need.
Best of luck.

• Can't load Nano Disk

I have a 1st gen NANO that had 203 songs on it. When I got a new computer I reloaded the original software and plugged in my IPOD. All 203 songs were wiped out and I now have nothing. I did an uninstall and totally removed the program and tried to reload but it will not reload now. It gets almost to the end and then says somethiong about a bad disc. So now I have nothing. If I could load the software I should be able to begin buidling a music inventory but I can't load it. Any Suggestions?

Download and install the most recent version from the website.

• Can't eject install disk

I used the install disk to reboot my computer. When I tried to eject I get an "applications or files still in use." I can't figure which ones they would be. Tried restarting several times. No success. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Maybe it is still starting up from the disc? Try holding the option key down next time you restart and choose the hard drive as the as the startup disk.

• Where can I purchase install disks for G4

I have purchased a second hand G4 and do not have the correct install disks that include Classic 9.x as I need Classic to run the software I have. Where might I find/purchase replacement install disk(s)?

To give exacting advice, we are going to need the exact model of g4.
Query by serial number
Apple's warrenty database will identify the type of Mac you have.  Your serial number is securely sent, but you get only the name of your machine.

• Can't use Install Disk to repair my MacBook Pro HD

Hi,
I ran the Mac Disk Utility on my MacBook Pro's HD and I got this screen:
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l320/brunotapia/help.gif

So I inserted the install disk so that I could boot up from the CD and run disk utility to repair my HD.
But the MacBook Pro keeps spitting out the disk. It reads other disks fine and this install disk reads on my friends computer so I know that both the MacBook Pro drive and the install disk are ok. So what could be causing my problem?
I have also tried to boot the computer from the disc holding the "C" key down, but the computer spits out the disk and boots up from the HD.
How can I repair the HD if I can't get the OS to boot from the install disk? What else can I do? Can I boot from another HD or Thumb drive? How about an iPod?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Bruno

Are you using the OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer? To startup from the installer disc first insert the disc in the optical drive (label side up.) If the computer does not allow the disc to mount on the Desktop then either your optical drive is bad or the installer disc is damaged or is not a valid installer disc for your model.
If the disc mounts on the Desktop then restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the spinning gear appears beneath the dark gray Apple logo.
If this still doesn't work then boot the computer into single-user mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until the computer starts up to a black screen with white print. At the prompt enter or paste in the following:
/sbin/fsck -yf
Press return and wait. If you receive a message that the drive required repairs, then re-run the above command line until you receive a message that says the filesystem is OK. If you have to repeat the command more than seven times without receiving a filesystem OK message, then that means the drive cannot be repaired by fsck. If you have a utility such as Disk Warrior 4.0 or TechTool Pro 4.5.2 then you can boot from their CDs and attempt to repair the drive. If either or both fail then the drive will need to be reformatted.
I highly recommend backing up.
Yes, you can boot from any external drive provided it has a bootable copy of OS X installed on it. If you have a second Mac with Firewire ports then you can connect it to the MBP via a Firewire cable. Boot the MBP into Target Disk Mode and the other computer normally. The MBP's hard drive should appear on the other computer's Desktop. You can then repair the drive using Disk Utility or other disk repair utility.

• Perpetual load - Install disk across country

Hello all,
I recently went to install a few updates for leopard and after the download it asked for a reboot and during the reboot it froze. I rebooted and am now stuck in the grey apple and a spinning wheel. I have done many of the troubleshooting tips and I am now wanting to try the disk utility, however my install disk is halfway across the country with my dad (leopard family pack). Is there another way to run the disk utility? Can I download and burn a boot disk with the disk utility?

http://www.macfixit.com/staticpages/index.php?page=20021025143249142
Click on BootCD. Use it to make a bootable disc containing Disk Utility and whatever else you want on it. I'm assuming you have access to another Mac to do this. If not see if your dad would be willing to make one for you, or better yet just make a backup copy of the install disc for you and mail it to you.

• Can't use install disk

Hello I'm Elliot. And I just got my MacBook and whenever I insert the install disk because it was wiped clean for security reasons it wont take it, it gives me "Alert, You cannot use this install disc" or something. Could anyone please give me some help? Thanks.

The computer model is
Apple Model No:
A1181 (EMC 2139)
Model ID:
MacBook2,1
and I just figured out I have the wrong install disks they are for iMac.
but they are 2Z691-6022-A

• Can I run Mac Os 10.4 on my iMac G4 Dome? Where can I get install disks?

I have an iMac G4 that currently has Mac OS10.3.9 installed.  I am unable to connect to the internet using my Airport Extreme even though there is an Airport card installed..  Can I install Mac OS 10.4 and if so where can I get installation CD's/DVD's for PPC G4?

Check in the Airport forums here:
AirPort
There may be a way to change security settings on the AEBS to accomodate the older OS.
As for OS versions, any iMac G4 can run OS 10.4.11, and those with a 1ghz or faster processor can run OS 10.5.8. However, demand has pushed prices of legitimate retail install packages for older Mac OS versions sky-high---often more than the computer is worth used---and has also attracted the attention of scam artists. There are NO downloadable versions of the Mac OS since 7.5. Any offered are scams and piracy.
You cannot use the gray system install/restore disks that came with another Mac model. A retail disk is black witha  big X and will NOT say "Up to Date" on it.
Another caution: Some older G4 iMacs shipped with CD drives, not DVDs, and most Tiger retail disks out there are DVDs. Make sure your computer can use a DVD system disk before your order.

• Can't load a disk

I'm trying to install Final Cut Studio 2, but it wont read the disk and just ejects it.

Hi NEwherebutA&M-
So I guess the obvious diagnosis would be a bad disk.
Have you another Mac to try the disk on just to see if it can be read? You could also take the disk to an Apple store and see if it can be read on a machine there.
If it is damaged or otherwise unusable Apple will replace it for a nominal charge.
Luck-

• Can the FCS install disks be made into disk images?

I can't remember if these were copy protected. I no longer have a disk player/burner, but I can get to one. Can I make disk images from the discs and use them to install the applications? Anyone done this? The apps seem to get FUBARed periodically and need to be reinstalled.
Thanks.

Yes, they can:
I keep them on a 50gb blu-ray disc.
