Can't load Leopard DVD from G4 optical drive

I worked with a tech person today to try to load Leopard from optical drive on my G4 Powerbook. It doesn't recognize DVDs, but does recognize CDs. I was told to I could get an external DVD player which I did, but the one the Apple Store sold me -- the MacBook Air SuperDrive does not run on the PowerBook G4. I need to be able to load Leopard ASAP. Any suggestions?

I don't know what the salesperson at the store was thinking. The MBA SuperDrive doesn't work with anything but the MBA, unless you dismantle it (voiding the warranty) and perform a hardware modification which will not be described here. And because it's a USB device, it couldn't boot a Powerbook at all, even if it could be used with one after booting. So someone at the Apple Store needs to be enrolled in a reeducation program ASAP.

Open Terminal and type or paste:  drutil eject and press enter, quit.
Might just be a bad DVD or it could contain a different form of copy protection that the Mac doesn't understand yet. Use a older DVD's and try them out, if you still have the same problem then you can try as much as you can of the fix list here or take your machine in for service.

  • Help please.  Can't boot my iMac from the optical drive.

17" flat panel, 1GHz iMac, running OS 10.2.8.
I've been trying to do some disk maintenance and would like to be able to repair my boot disk. I've tried to boot from the optical drive, using Norton SystemWorks CD-ROM and also my iMac software install and repair DVD, holding down the C key while attempting to boot. After trying for a few seconds, a gray veil drops down and a text box telling me that I have to shut down by holding the power key for many seconds shows up. (Is this a Kernel panic?)
I've also run Repair Permissions. That program seems to stall right at the end, as the status bar is 99% full, and never completes its run.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi MacGeezer,
    DO NOT USE NORTON SYSTEMWORKS
Norton Utilities and Disk Doctor were discontinued almost 2 years ago (for some very good reasons!). It caused much more trouble than it solved.

  • Problem to boot up installation DVD from another optical drive.

Hello, i am trying to install the Snow Leopard OS to my MBA (10.5.2) using the optical drive of my iMac (Lion). The moment i power up the MBA (with the option button being pressed) after i log into the wi-fi network, the only boot device i see is the Macintoxcv hard drive. Which is the MBA's hard drive.
I dont see the Optical drive of my iMac with the installation dvd inside. They are both in the same wi-fi network and the sharing is on.
If i log into the MBA i am able to remotely run the DVD but the system says that my hard drive is corrupted and i need to boot from the dvd and that i shouldn't worry because the problem will be resolved during the installation of the Snow Leopard. But i cant boot from the DVD as i previously stated.. ANy ideas?
PS. Under application/utilities on my iMac (the source DVD) i dont have the option Remote Install Mac OS to clic on.

Apple has restricted booting from optical drives to only internal ones, also I hear you can't install Windows from a external optical drive neither.
The solution in your case is to create a 10.6 install USB
    http://www.maciverse.com/reinstalling-os-x-on-macbook-air.html
    http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html
You have to decide if you want to backup files off the machine, take your chances and upgrade your present 10.5 (which has your free iLife on it) installed copy (stable or not) to 10.6 then to 10.6.8,   or
if your 10.5 installed is not exactly stable, then backup files off the machine and erase and reinstall 10.5 (which has your free iLife on it) and then upgrade to 10.6 then to 10.6.8, then Disk Utility > Repair disk (from the 10.6 USB) then install 10.6 programs fresh and files from backup or
erase the 10.5 install completely from the 10.6 USB and install 10.6.3 (no free iLife)
iLife doesn't come on the 10.6.3 Retail Upgrade disks, also you can't use another Mac's 10.6 disk to install SL on your machine.
If your 10.5 installed is stable, then consider a backup of files off the machine (disconnect any other drive) and simply upgrading 10.5 to 10.6, it will keep all your presently installed programs, although a few will require updating.
To boot off the USB, you need to hold the option key down.
Now on Mac's with a DVD drive, when the SL 10.6 disk is simply inserted, one runs a program that reboots and upgrades 10.5 to 10.6
Since you will be booted from the USB, you will have to select to install 10.6 onto the 10.5 drive, it only does that and not touches your third party programs or your files. (but backup anyway in case things go wrong)
You neeed this disk to create the USB from, can only be ordered online now as I hear.

If your considering upgrading to Lion from 10.6.8 Appstore, let me give you some valuable advice.
10.5 Intel machines are rather dated, if it's not a 64 bit processor Lion can't be installed (no Intel Core Duo's, they are 32 bit)
Your going to have a dated video card, Lion is slower than Snow Leopard.
You need a minimum of 2GB of RAM, 4GB+ is reported to be better for Lion.
Lion does not allow you to run your 10.5 programs in Rosetta like 10.6 does, so Lion requires all new software.
In my opinion a dated machine having to buy all new software is a waste of money, spend the $29 for Snow Leopard and pretty much everything you presently have in software investment will work.
My opinion is to save Lion for a new machine, your machine will run better on 10.6 than 10.7 glitch issues.
Check this database for programs that are ready for Lion

  • Can't load leopard on an external drive

I am having some serious trouble trying to load leopard on an external drive. I have a 1TB drive on my MBP and it is partitioned with Mavericks and Leopard. I am tired of Mavericks hanging up and I am goint to do a clean install like I did on my Mac Pro.
I have a mini 500GB FW drive that I put mavericks on and migrated my data. On the leopard partition I have a few older programs and I want to migrate that partitition to a 320FW external drive. That way I have all my data, can wipe my 1TB drive, partition it, load mavericks and leapord and migrate from the FQW Drives.
When I put in my disc for leopard, Mavericks won't allow me to load it. I tried the Command R function with start up and I can't load leopard on that drive. I get a message saying I can't do that. I have also tried to copy the leopard disk over to the 320 GB FW HD and I get permission errors.
I really need to be able to use leopard for an older program that takes panasonic p2 cards.
Is there anything I am overlooking or missing? Any tricks to make this work?
    Thanks!

I hope you mean Snow Leopard:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

I can't play a DVD from my superdrive via my macbook pro to apple TV via airplay.  The movie plays fine on the macbook if I'm not trying to airplay.  The airplay works fine if I'm not trying to play a movie from the superdrive.  I think my apple TV is Gen 2.

  • I can't load some content from my external hard drive to itunes,

I can't load some content from 1 of my external hard drive to itunes, it can see it and try to load the folder / files but it doesn't appear, these files worked recently as some of them are currently on my ipod touch - I had to factory restore my laptop this week (virus) so have been trying to put everything back on to sync ipod - any ideas???

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.
    Ciao.

  • Can't load Network Settings from System Preferences

For some reason I can't load Network Settings from System Preferences anymore - it just stalls with the bar showing "Loading Network" and doing nothing. This is happening in conjunction with a new inability to connect to a network printer - it won't show up on the list of printers, even when I manually enter the IP address. Something is obviously mucked up - can anyone tell me what it might be & how I can fix it? Thanks!

I was able to fix this myself by using one of the techniques suggested here for a different problem. Basically I went into Library/Preferences/System Configuration and deleted networkinterfaces.plist, preferences.plist & com.apple.nat.plist. All were rebuilt when I restarted and went to System Preferences/Network and I was able to load the Network Settings. This didn't fix the problem with my printer, but at least it got the settings up.

My problem is a sudden loss of ability to get to PSE12 Organizer when I tried to load a saved scan. Had been using the Organizer and the Editor with no problems for several hours just before that.
Can not load the Organizer from the icon at the bottom of  Editor screen, from the icon on the MacBook Air dock (OS 10.10.2),  nor from the file in applications located with Finder.
I have tried without success to access Organizer after turning off and on the scanner, turning off and on the computer, loading a fresh copy of PSE12 from the CD, and restoring default preferences.  I have searched on line for other options but not  found any.
