Can't locate AppleTalk printer on my net

I have a NEC Silentwriter 95f I haven't used in a while. I'm waiting for my regular inkjet to be replaced by Epson and trying to get this (network) laser printer on-line. It doesn't appear in the Chooser on my older Mac (or in Classic). Within OS X (10.3.9) it appears in the printer list and I can select it to print to but does not respond when attempting to print. (In the AppleTalk sub-menu the "Printer Model: Auto Select" is greyed out.)
I don't remember changing anything since it last worked. The Silentwriter is connected to an AsanteTalk box which is in turn connected to a NetGear hub. Everything is powered, Appletalk is turned on and I've checked and swapped cables as a precaution. My main test for seeing if it's on the network is using the Chooser on an older Mac where it used to appear reliably. Selecting LaserWriter nothing appears in the Postscript printer list. The printer works to the extent I can print a self-test page but I really don't know where to go next in trying to isolate the problem. I'd really appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks in advance,
Paul Dougherty
p.s. I have AppleCare for my newer Macs but network printers seems to be excluded re. support

I'm having a similar problem. I have a LaserWriter Select 360 that I'd like to use with my G5 tower. First I tried a USB to parallel adapter. I could not get the Mac to find the printer. I figured the preinstalled printer driver expected to connect via ethernet, so...
Then I tried using an an Appletalk to ethernet adapter to connect the printer to an Airport Express. I still could not get the Mac to find the printer.
I tried using IP printing by entering the IP address of the Airport Express and was able to choose LaserWriter Select 360 in the printer setup and made a desktop printer. When I try to print I get a message that "the Host is busy."
I have a feeling that this set up needs the IP address of the printer, not the Airport Express, but since the Mac still does not "see" it, I have no way of getting it's IP address. Is there a default IP address for the LaserWriter Select 360? Is there a way to print out a page with this info about the printer on it without it being connected to a computer?
I also have a small ethernet hub. I'm going to try to connect through that or disconnect my DSL and connect directly. Can I be connected to DSL and the printer with just a hub or do I need a router? I've only got 1 computer and a router seems like overkill.
If Apple ships my computer with a driver for my printer I assume they expect them to be connected. How do they expect them to connect– ethernet, USB, Airport?
Any suggestions?

I just had a router change to Netgear and after stting up my printer (Brother MFC 490CW) and my iMac wireless to it, my computer can't locate the printer as it has done with the old router. Any help on this please?

Care to share which OS you are using?
Read the user manual that came w/your printer.  Should be instructions in there regarding wireless set up.  Also, contact Brother Support if their user manual is of no help.

"Add a Printer" can't locate my printer software even though it has been downloaded to the hard drive. How can I guide it to the software?

What did you download and from where?  Most downloads go to your Home/User/Downloads folder unless you've specified a different location in your browser.
If you downloaded the drivers from the App Store the drivers will be installed automatically and all you need to do is go to the System/Printers & Scanners preference pane as described below.
You will have to install the drivers after downloading the installer package.  Lastly go to the System/Printers & Scanners preference pane and add the printer there.  It will automatically locate the drivers and set it up.

ok no problem! all i did was 1) set up the mobile hotspot on my phone. 2)  turn it and wifi on on the phone. 3)  connect the laptop/desktop to the hotspot network. 4) insert setup disk for the printer and begin setup. 5) complete the setup "using a usb cord to temporarilly connect the computer and printer" 6) unplug usb cable and finish set up on the laptop/desktop. 7) give it a few minutes to show up on the AirPrint menu on the phone. 8) that should be it. I unplugged the printer and plugged it back in, made sure the laptop was totally turned off AND disconnected from the network, and did everything I could to try and make it not work. The printer I have is a Canon MG3122, it doesn't have a fancy screen or even a way to input a password or anything like that, so it just strores a default network that it will connect to. in order to change networks i would have to complete setup multiple times. Since I only plan to use it with AirPrint for my mobile business....the one network is just fine! Hope this helps!

  • I hope it's Kappy reading this. My HP Laserjet successfully installed but can't create a print queue...

Hello Kappy - Thank you for persevering with my printer issues. Firstly, I use Firefox, recently updated & as yet have not discovered how to monitor downloads. The software for HP Laserjet 2200 was eventually automaticallly, and therefore correctly, installed. The Add Printer Pane accessed via the + button in the Printer & Scanner window is blank - the Name & Location and Print Using & Add areas are all grayed out, therefore I can't locate the printer driver even though it is in the Printer folder. I messed around with HP Direct Protocol & Line Daemon functions, entering my IP address, just to see if I could locate the printer driver - I could. However, I get a pop-up window which says 'Unable to verify the printer on your network' but it gives me the option of going ahead anyway, which I did. I was able to create a print queue, able to give a print command, the printer window opens, but the printer appears as 'busy', but of course it's not printing. To look at the issue from another perspective: previously I was running 10.5.8 on my old Power Mac G5 and a week before I shifted over the iMac I paused the printer but when tried to resume printing I got a pop-up message saying IPadmin > enter administrator name + password. Which of course I couldn't do - I discovered this was a bug afflicting10.5 & 10.6 operating systems; the only way I could get around it was by re-creating myself as a new administrator, which I did, and got the printer going again. So, if I have a "Network" printer perhaps there's another route to get the driver recognized... What do you think?

  • Printing from MacBook Pro to Appletalk printer

Computer: MacBook Pro OS X 10.4.8
    network: wireless via Apple Airport
printer: NEC SilentWriter 1097 connected to Ethernet via a Appletalk-to-Ethernet adaptor
    Here is the situation:
When I run the Printer Setup Utility, select "Add Printer," then press the "More Printers..." button, then select "AppleTalk" and "Local AppleTalk Zone," no printers show up in the list. Appletalk is enabled in the network settings and I can see the other Macs on the network. The other Macs (both PPC, one wired one wireless; both also running 10.4.8) on the network can see the Appletalk printer. The MacBook Pro (Intel) cannot.
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

How is your Airport connected to the Ethernet-to-Localtalk adapter? Is it a direct connection from the LAN Ethernet port on the Airport or through a hub/switch/router? On my network both the Airport and the iPrint Ethernet-to-Localtalk adapter are connected to an Ethernet switch (as are 2-3 computers). I have had no problems printing to my HP 5MP via AppleTalk wirelessly from 2 other Macs. (Except that this is slow with complex documents due to the slow Localtalk connection.)
Are you sure the Ethernet port on the Airport is enabled? How did you set up the Airport? Can you use other services such as iTunes sharing over the wireless connection?
I am using the same laser printer driver whether I connect wirelessly or wired. Since the 802.11g should function as if it is a wired connection, I don't see why there should be a difference in drivers, as long as you use an ethernet workable driver as you are apparently doing. (I am not a printer guru, just a learner, so I could be wrong here, but the Appletalk over wireless 802.11g does work for me. I don't have an Intel Mac but I do want to get one soon so I hope there is not a problem in this regard.)

  • 6280 All-in-One printer - changing from USB to Ethernet connection - error - can't find the printer

I am trying to reinstall my C6280 All-in-One printer from the product CD - my original installation was for a USB connection, I would now like to reinstall to an Ethernet connection for use on our wireless nework. I have gone through the HP -Installing the Product Software in Windows XP for a Wired (Ethernet) Network Connection - instructions but keep getting the error message - Can't locate the Printer.   I have connected the ethernet cable in the ethernet port of the computer and the router (Airlink 101).  Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong?

    Hi,
You can use the following link to setup the printer over a wired n/w.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01708573&tmp_task=setupCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc...
Just to confirm..Make sure that you connect the "Printer and Router using the ethernet cable"
To make sure that your printer is found during the installation, after connecting the ethernet cable, make sure that your printer is getting a valid IP address.

  • MacBook Air can't find my printer

Let me preface this by first stating that I am not technically savvy.  Turning a computer on and off is about it for me. So I just purchased the HP 6835, took it out of the box and have been attempting to set it up.  Everything appears to work fine by my Macbook Air can't find the printer.  I've been trying to get this to find it for hours, reading almost everything. I then looked at the box it came in and it reads on the box that this Printer Supports OSX v10.9 Mavericks. My Macbook Air is running OSX Yosemite v10.10.3, is this why my Macbook can't locate the printer?   If this is not the answer, any ideas would be great.   Thanks, David

The printer shows up as its own wireless network in the list of networks
    It shouldn't.

  • Yosemite Mac Can't Locate Printer

I just got a new Macbook Pro last month. I am using a HP ENVY 4500 printer and occasionally, when I try to send a print job to the printer, it gets stuck in the "Connecting" stage, then when I wait long enough, I get the "cannot locate printer" message. I then restart my Macbook Pro and everything is fine again. When I only got this error once, I thought it might have been some minor glitch but this has happened twice now. Any ideas what could be causing this? Could this be a fundamental hardware issue or am I being overly paranoid?

Thank you so much for the assistance! I will definitely try the steps you mentioned when I encounter the issue again. Just as another update, I have tried turning my printer off and back on again to no success... It seems like restarting the Mac was the only solution so far. Also, just to be very specific with the issue, I will describe the events: (1) I sent a print job to the printer and it just says, "looking for printer" for a while. (2) I then get a message saying that the mac is unable to locate the printer. (3) I unplug the USB and re-plug it again and try again (when I do this, it seems like the printer is detected, but when I try to print, it loads for a while then again says that the printer is unable to be located). (4) I turn the printer off and back on and the same issue from (3) happens. (5) Finally, I restart the computer and send the print job and everything is fine again.  I just want to make sure that there's nothing wrong with my Mac and that this sounds more like a software/incompatibility issue! How likely do you think that this is an issue with the hardware?
