Can't locate disk (using Disk Utility) when reinstalling OSX v10.2

Having problems after wiping drive and reinstalling - Disk Utility & Installation do not show a drive for the machine. Viewing other posts suggest clicking on Erase tab and selecting MAC OS Extended - but the drop-down box is greyed out with MAC OS Standard displayed. Tried to use Disk Warrior but nothing displayed when I booted up from the CD. Is this an indicator that my drive needs replacing? Machine is old - G4 /450, and can't remember if I used the old software or Tiger with the previous installation.
Thanks for any suggestions!

do you have your original mac install disks? try to use the apple hardware test program...it will check the main hardware and if there are hardware failures with your HD, or other components it'll give you heads up.
also post this question in the powermac G4 forum, might get more bites since this is the G4 MDD forum.

My MacBook is stuck on apple logo and heats up. I tried restarting in safe mode but it's still stuck. I also tried to repair the disk using disk utility. It says that HD is ok, so when I restart, I'm still stuck on the logo. Is there a way I could fix this without loosing my files?

Restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys so you can access OS X: About OS X Recovery
From there you can reinstall OS X, repair the startup disk, and restore from a Time Machine backup.
FYI ... wiht ML installed, the only way to repair the startup disk is OS X Recovery, not the Disk Utility app installed on your Mac. You can verify but not repair.

  • Partitioning a disk using disk utility

I bought a rather large capacity external hard drive for use as a Time Machine backup drive along with MacOS 10.5, and figured I'd partition off 100GB of it for use as a bootable partition. So, I looked up how to partition a drive in Disk Utility, and it said:
    "*To partition a startup disk:*
    1) If you’re partitioning an external hard disk, make sure it’s connected to your computer. If you’re partitioning the disk you are now using as a startup disk, you must start up using another disk such as your Mac OS X install disc.
    2) Open Disk Utility. If you’re in the Mac OS X Installer, choose Utilities > Disk Utility. Otherwise, double-click Disk Utility, located in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder.
    3) Select the disk in the list that you want to partition, and click Partition.
    4) Choose the number of partitions from the Volume Scheme pop-up menu.
    5) If you can’t choose the number of partitions, you may be trying to partition your startup disk. Start up your computer with another disk, such as your Mac OS X install disc."
The external hard drive showed up in the side bar, but there was nothing in the disk utility window called "Partition" for me to click on. Nothing called "partition" existed in the menus either. I tried to customize the toolbar, thinking that "Partition" might be a button not currently on the tool bar, but I found nothing.
(I would attach screenshots of both the help window and Disk Utility, but I can't do that here.)

When you select a disk that DU can partition, that is, not the volume currently booted from,
you can see the five buttons

    Also:
Don't forget to choose the "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" formatting option.

  • Erasing and re-titling a floppy disk using Disk Utility in OS Tiger

I am trying to erase and re-title a floppy disk using "Disk Utility." I keep getting an error message that "Disk Utility" cannot open the disk.
I'm using an external FD drive that plugs into the USB port and is recognized without the use of driver software. When the floppy disk icon appears on the desktop, and I select it, the use of "return" and typing in a new name has no effect. The floppy disk icon reappears named "Untitled."
    Any suggestions?

Is the disk locked? Haven't used a floppy in quite awhile, but do remember that they had a slider that would lock it.

  • Can not repair disk using disk utility

I tried using disk utility to repair the main drive of my imac 24" (2007) model and it says that the number of files are off by 1 from the total number that should be there so it could not be prepared it said to start up using the install disk but that was crack in a recent move. We tried disk warrior and it would not repair the main drive because thats where disk warrior is so i did a graph and it said 950,000 (ball park) files are out of order and could not be graphed. The only reason i could think that files would be out of order is my 3 year old he has a game on here and learned the awesome concept of click and drag so before we put a lock on it he was dragging things from the dock and putting them in the trash so he may have rearranged things without knowing. the computer has been extra slow recently and the "white screen" when you restart stays for about 2 mins before the apple timer appears. We have an antivirus so the drive is clean as far as that goes. Please if anyone could help respond back!!
    Thanks
    Luke

you can not repair a boot up drive while you are booted from it. You really need to get your leopard install DVD replaced. You need it just for these kinds of situations.
You can repair the drive from Single user mode
restart the computer and hold command+S at the chime. a black screen with white text will come up. at the prompt enter
    */sbin/fsck -fy*
that's the drive repair command. wait for the repair to finish. If there are any errors, run it again till no errors are reported.
    Once done, enter
    reboot
    to restart normally.

  • Can't repair disk using Disk Utility

Hi, my MacBook (10.7.6) was freezing frequently and I was not able to use Command+Option+Esc to safely force quit. I would only be doing light Internet surfing whenever the laptop froze. No new software or hardware installed recently either to cause the problem. Anyone encounter this problem too?
Tried using Disk Repair and this is the message I get: disk utility stopped repairing macintosh HD. Disk utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk and restore your backed-up files.
Under the details of the disk repair process, the following items were highlighted in red.
    1. Checking volume bitmap: volume bitmap needs minor repair for under allocation
    2. Checking volume information: the volume macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
    Volume repair complete.
    3. Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Error: disk utility can't repair this disk...restore your backed-up files.
Appreciate any help you can give on what the underlying problem could be and how to reformat the disk now.
    Thanks in advance!!

You have OS X Lion, so you don't need a DVD, just start from Recovery.
    1. Press Command and R keys while your Mac is starting and open Disk Utility.
    2. Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and repair the drive.
If it can't repair the drive:
    1. Make a Time Machine backup.
    2. Press Command and R keys while your computer is starting, open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar, select Erase tab, erase the drive and close Disk Utility.
    3. On OS X Utilities window, select the option to restore the backup and follow its steps

  • Multiple burns on a disk using Disk Utility??

    Hi,
I found these notes about doing multiple burns on a disk (see below and it mentions changing the extention name to .img so that disk utility will give you the make disk appendable option.
I understand all that but my question is will this change the ability of the file to open in a new or old Mac (I have an old iMac G3 slot loading, PowerbookPC G4, and the new intel C2D 17"? My assumption is it will be fine in a new Mac but what about my older G3? I want to burn a disc and leave it appendable but am afraid by changing it to .img it won't open in the G3.
    Thanks,
    S.
    1. Collect the material you want to burn in a folder on your Desktop. Open Disk Utility.
    2. Select Disk>New>Disk Image from the Folder menu. Use the dialog box to navigate to the folder you have created on your Desktop, and select "Image." Name your new image, select a destination for the new file, and click "Save." Your file name should end in .img.
    3. Back in Disk Utility, click the toolbar "Burn" button, navigate to the disk image you just created, selected, and click "Burn." Another dialog box will appear. Click the blue triangle but in the upper right hand corner. The dialog box will expand, giving you an additional selection of options. Click "Leave disk appendable," then click the "Burn" button to initiate the burn.
    4. When you want to add a subsequent burn to that disk, repeat the process described above, but in the final dialog box, you will then see an "Append" button instead of a "Burn" button. This process can be repeated until there is no more free space left on the disk to create appended sessions.

  • How do I make a data disk using Disk Utility (Panther 10.3.9)

I am trying to back up some of my data to disks, so I can upgrade my OS to Leopard. I have done this in the past but either forgot how or it isn't working right (some things are not working right on my computer at present..?? my Final Cut Pro won't open, that's why I decided to upgrade) Could you please tell me how it is supposed to work. I think I have made a disk image okay but when I highlight it in disk utility and hit burn it says invalid argument?? If I install Leopard will I loose all my files?

Not necessarily, but you should never do a major upgrade without having a bootable backup of your system. In fact you should never be without backups:
    Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    9. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
Upgrading does not have to be difficult unless you choose to make it so. You have three installation options. I would recommend an Archive and Install option when feasible:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Problems burning disks using Disk Utility

    Hi,
I am trying to burn an disk image onto multiple DVD's. I manage to sucessfully burn to DVD twice on the third burn I get a message telling me that disk verfication is not complete. I am wasting a lot of discs here.
I don't seem to be able to reduce the burn speed (it is set at x4) I have tried turning the mac off and on and it still happens. I had similar problems in iDVD hence why I am using Disk Utility.
Is this a bug, a problem with the burner or a problem with me??

  • Problem Repairing Disk using Disk Utility

    Hi Everyone,
I'm having trouble with my PowerBook G4 and I hope I can recover my files on my HD. Recently, while trying to boot it up, I would just get the grey Apple with the spinning timer indicator underneath it. It would stay like that for far too long and I would have to shut it down and try again.
So I tried rebooting from my installation disk and running Disk Utility. I verified the disk and then got an error, so I tried to repair the disk. This is what I have on my screen now:
Verify and Repair Disk "Macintosh HD"
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog File.
    Keys out of order
    Rebuilding Catalog B-tree
The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    Repair attempted on 1 volume
1 volume could not be repaired
I know the files on the HD are there because when I do a "restore" I can go into the file structure and see them. I was planning on getting an external HD to back up my files so if that's part of the solution, I am game.
Any advice here would be great. I really miss my Powerbook.
    Ken
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi Ken, Welcome to the Discussions!
You will probably need to do an erase & install. This will not preserve your data so be sure to get what you can off the hard drive.
There is a fix that may work for keys out of order--and that is to run DiskWarrior on your hard drive. You can see information about DiskWarrior here: http://alsoft.com but don't just buy the web download--you need the bootable CD.
    Good Luck!

  • Startup Disk not there when reinstalling OSX (Early 2013 MBP retina)

I had reinstalled the OSX on my MBP a few times so I am not unfamiliar with the process of rebooting from the boot menu, formatting via the disk utility and then reinstalling either via a backup or from the internet backup (as the retina does not have a dvd drive).
Doing it this time and I did nothing different, however upon entering the disk utility screen, the main disk image simply wasn't there. I was conducting a reinstall of OSX from the internet and had already downloaded the new software, as you have to do when installing from the internet. I then came to the disk utility screen, ready to reformat the hard drive and it simply wasn't there at all. The only image there was the one I had just downloaded ready to install.
Thinking this extremely strange, I reboot the computer and it takes ages, then comes to a screen with a continually flashing folder symbol with a question mark in it. I have left it like this for 30 mins with no change.
So now, I cannot boot normally, and I cannot reinstall a downloaded image on the main SSD because it is not showing at all in the disk utility.
I have plugged in an external hard drive and am currently installing a new image on this to try to check where the main hard drive is once it is up and running, but any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
As mentioned, it is an early 2013 MBP retina, the warranty is up so cannot take it back to apple.
