Can't Locate Songs

I just moved my music to my hard disk (from an external hard drive), I changed the file path in itunes to what I think is the correct file path. Itunes can't find my songs, what am I doing wrong?

disconnected the EHD mid stream to see if it was working and many of the songs would not play
Why?
Once all files are copied to the C drive as specified in preferences
I thought you wanted them on the external drive?
You are consolidating to the C: Drive?
You were supposed to move the files back in WIndows Explorer, then Consolidate to the external.
Oh boy, now as it is copying, I look at the folder to which it is going and there are two of each song...
You said previously you moved (not copied) the files from the C: drive?
Did you only copy them and they remained on the C: drive? And now another copy is being put into the same folders?

    Might try this...
    >On your main hard drive, dig down into System > Library > CoreServices > Menu Extras. Inside that window, double-click on the icon called Eject.menu.

  • Itunes can't locate song on computer since upgrading to 7.1.1

I upgraded to i Tunes 7.1.1, now it can't locate my songs and it wants me to erase and sync my I Pod, Any Suggestion would be appreciated. When I click on a song to play it lets me looks for the files in music folders in the iTunes library but names are replaced with coded letters and when i click on on of them it plays a song but I usually can't find the right song. I did have problems upgrading 7.1.1

  • Can't locate song files!!!

So the family's iTunes account was transferred to my new laptop because the previous one was getting old and slow. Our computer genius transferred everything seamlessly and it was fine. However, as of late, we are missing over 300 songs on our library. The songs are playing on our iPods but not on iTunes. The songs are "there" in iTunes however every time you go to play them, it says it can't locate file. When trying to locate file, none of the songs are there! What do we need to do to get our songs back and playing?? Any help is much appreciated! Thank you

IF the songs are not actually on the drive, then they are not there.
The only resolution is to either copy them from the old computer or the backup of your old computer...
Syncing with iTunes is one way, computer to idevice.

  • New iTunes can not play music, can not locate songs in my music library

I only use iTune on my PC, so this Should be simple. I downloaded a new version of iTunes when prompted to do that. With the new version, I cannot play my music. It asks me to locate songs, but nothing helps locate them. I put ogver 4000 songs on my hard drive and now, thanks to going with the prompt, I cannot play any of them. What can this low tech 68 year old music-lover do to listen to his songs once again?

I'm afraid the problem is more widespread than just iTunes and the update didn't fix it. There's a thread out there about users not getting any sound/audio in Lion after wake from sleep or just having it idle for a long while.
Hopefully, Mac OS X 10.7.2 will fix the issue.
    Thanks!

  • ITunes can't locate song/music in Mac iTunes.

Suddenly, all of my music in iTunes has a little exclamation point next to the track, and it can't locate the song.  They are all there.  Is there a fast way to get iTunes to find ALL my music, without having to go back manually and click on each track to find?

iTunes keeps a record if where it thinks the files are located. If you change a file or folder or drive name, the links are no longer valid.  If you did this, change it back.
I have also heard that sometimes when you find one file, newer  iTunes will try to find files based upon the same criteria, so at least try to find one file.

  • Itunes can't locate songs stored in external drive

i had created playlists and added songs to the playlists in itunes 7.02. these songs are stored on an external drive. i did not sync my ipod immediately but tried it a few days later. despite the external drive being connected to my laptop, when i tried to sync the ipod with itunes, for 90% of the songs there was an exclamation mark next to the song & i had to manually double click on a song name in itunes, and locate it in the external drive, in order for itunes to be able to sync it.
i can't do that for 3000+ songs. why can't itunes recognise and locate these songs when they have been stored in the itunes library from the external drive? isn't there a way to tell itunes to locate songs in the external drive? especially when they had been added from there in the first place?

    Hi there,
I'm having the same problem, I'll list it in case I'm somehow different from the other case but unfortunately directing iTunes to that folder doesn't seem to do the trick...?
Have bought a Seagate 320GB external drive, copied my iTunes library (that was located in my /Users/Shared folder) to a new location on my external drive and redirected iTunes to the new location. It said it was updating the folder which took a while and I assumed was a good sign due to my 8948 songs but alas the dreaded exclamation mark has appeared next to every track. If I redirect one to the new location it works fine but f*ed if I'm gonna do that for the other 8947. If I quit iTunes and reopen it, it's still directed to the same correct place and the previously located still works but the rest don't. Is there a) some reason this may not be working correctly; or b) a quick way to redirect every song to their location? Thanks so much for your help.

I've been trying to locate my lost song files on my computer and in my iTunes purchased library. However, when I try to go through itunes purchased to redownload prevously purchased songs, it says they have all been downloaded to my computer. These are the songs that show up with a small "i" in a circle in my library. I click to "locate" but cannot find them anywhere. How can I find them and/or re-download these songs?

Tunes works through a database file which has a list of your tracks.  When you click on a track it looks up in the database which file it needs to play, then plays the file.  If something breaks this link then you get !  The two main ways to get ! are to move a file from where iTunes expects it to be, or to delete it altogether.  I don't know which has happened in your case.  You can try using Spotlight to find a file for the one referred to in a broken link.  If the files have been moved then they need to be moved back.  If they were deleted completely you will have to restore them from a backup or download them again from the iTunes Store and rebuild your library.

  • Moved music, now itunes can't locate songs

I moved my music to a second internal hard drive hard drive. Now Itunes can't find the songs even though I have changed the music file location. Each song title has an Exclamation point next to it in the itunes library window. Any suggestions?

when it asks you if you want to find the song after you double click on a song to play it, click 'yes' and browse to the folder that the song is in, and click 'ok' and it will work.

  • ITunes can't locate songs in my library.

It took me a while to point iTunes 11.0.2 (26) 64-bit in 10.8.3 to my existing itunes library that is also used by my 10.6.x system.  Once I did though I went to a playlist and clicked on the song and found that even though it updated my library files (Itunes Library and Itunes Library.xml) it did not actually scan the songs in the library because it couldn't locate the song.  I located the song and it asked me if I wanted it to use that info to find other lost songs which I said yes to.  It proceeded to not even find the rest of the songs in the same directory I had pointed it to.  Now I have about 4165 songs missing!  *** iTunes?!?!  I have NO MISSING SONGS under 10.6.x and I'm using the same library files and the  same library structure and everything.  IS there a way to do this other than repointing iTunes to the existing library?  Please help me or I will be forced to write iTunes off.  Which in my opinion is getting easy as the whole program is getting worse and worse from a cpl years ago.
    Thanks in advance.

The problem of tracks becoming de-linked between iTunes and the music files in your iTunes music folder happens for different reasons - this seems to come up fairly commonly in this forum.
The solution can be to locate each song in the iTunes library, as you mentioned - or, but wait, before I get to that...
trouble finding the original track in your iTunes music folder? maybe look for it under compilations, or if not using the 'group compilations preference' then look in the folder under the songs artist name, but what song artist name iTunes uses depends on what you have in the metedata tag spot for album artist or song artist. Any varyation in artist name spelling, in the menu item 'get info' metadata for any selected individual track will cause iTunes to create that as a separate artist folder in the library, even names like 'various' or any difference at all (even the word 'the' can change where in your iTunes music folder a track gets placed by iTunes). You can try to use the finder function of find file (finder munu item outside of iTunes) to locate hard to find items.
Back to how to re-link any de-linked tracks .
There may be scripts that can help re-link de-linked music files - or, at least provide you a list of such files, Scripts are easy to install and use...
at Dougs Scripts, there is one called iTunes Track CPR that might work
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=itunestrackcpr
or, if you just want a list of de-linked tracks, go to
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/
and find the script called List MIA's, this will create a text file listing all de-linked tracks

  • Can't locate songs after moving iTunes folder

After years of having all of my iTunes music on an external drive, I upgraded the Macbook's HD and decided to move the songs back. After doing so and pointing iTunes to the new location, it still asks me to click and find each file (which would take forever with 100GB of music).
-The ITL file and everything else has been on the Mac HD in Users/Music/iTunes with only the music on the external drive in a folder called "iTunes". All I did was cut and paste every file from the external folder into Users/Music/iTunes/iTunesMusic which was previously empty. I changed the location, it did its updating, but nothing is being located. Everything is the same as before.
-Every time I locate a song it creates a new folder called music and puts the identified tracks in there.
-Is there a script I can use to locate all of the songs since they're all right in that folder? The only thing that has changed is that they moved. For some reason iTunes isn't playing them even though I changed the location under preferences.

  • ITunes Can't Locate Songs?

I'm running iTunes 7.7.0.43 and the last time I opened the app, it lost the locations of more than half my library (8000+ songs). I get the dreaded grey ! icon next to each of them -- but only after I try to play one that is missing.
I haven't moved my library or any of its content. (The .itl is on my internal hard drive, while the iTunes music folder is stored on an external. This setup has worked fine in the past.) I viewed the XML file and iTunes is calling the correct location for each of the files in question. It's as if iTunes just need to be manually reminded of where these songs are located, though their location +has not changed+.
Is there any way to fix this without having to re-import my entire library? It is too difficult to manually point iTunes to all the songs, and I'd really like to preserve my playlists and ratings.

First thing, if your songs are protected, which mp4 usually are, then you need to log into your iTunes account and allow access to these songs. Otherwise, what you do is move all your music into your iTunes folder, then you go to File and then "Add Folder to Library" and select either your iTunes music folder or an individual folder. If that doesn't work, then retry the last steps and then go to Advanced and then "Consolidate Library". This will force all your iTunes music into your iTunes folder.

  • Can't locate songs that are in the ITunes folder

I have an exclamation point next to every song even though it is in the iTunes music folder. I have checked that the path to the music folder is correct - it there any way of re-linking all songs to the folder short of locating each manually?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Try this:
Go to iTunes->Preferences->Advanced (general): change the music folder location to the new location of your files. Click OK. (If it already set correctly, set it to something different, click OK, and then go back and set it to the correct location.)
    Does that work?

Lost several hundreds of worth of music purchased before.
Can't understand the Apple appeal and goodwill.
Always overpriced, waste of time, lack of features and poor customer help.  It's all about sales, image, marketing and growing.   Little to do with concern for the customer value.
Any ideas on how to find the library of purchased (paid in full) songs are appreciated.
    Thanks!

I love the new version of Grid view but some of the other changes feel like they still need some fine tuning. And I miss cover flow even if I didn't use it that often...
You can restore much of the look & feel of the previous version with these shortcuts:
Ctrl-B to turn on the menu bar.
Ctrl-S to turn on the sidebar (your device should be listed here as before).
Ctrl-/ to turn on the status bar.
Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the old search behaviour.
Use View > Hide <Media Kind> in the cloud or Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the cloud purchases to hide the cloud items. The second method eliminates the cloud status column (but perhaps it does more)
If you want to roll back to iTunes 10.7 first download a copy of the 32 bit installer or 64 bit installer as appropriate, uninstall iTunes and suppporting software, i.e. Apple Application Support & Apple Mobile Device Support. Reboot. Restore the pre-upgrade version of your library database as per the diagram below, then install iTunes 10.7.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to scan the media folder and catch up with any changes made since the backup file was created.
