Can't lock network preferences

I recently upgraded my MBP (A1398) to yosemite. Somehow, the padlock that is normally present at the bottom of the network preferences pane is missing. Any thoughts on how to reenable the padlock? I would like to enter the admin password to make any changes.
I have ControlPlane installed for automatic proxy switching - could this be the cause?

In the Security & Privacy preference pane, unlock the settings, then click the Advanced button and check the box marked
Require administrator password for access to locked settings

  • Mavericks - Can't lock network preferences?!

used to be able to lock to prevent any changes to the network settings, not anymore, any suggestions?

The lock hasn't been removed entirely, it's just been changed into an option for system wide preferences.
Apple >> System Preferences >> Security and Privacy >> click the lock in the lower left and input password >> Advanced >> check off "require an administrator password to access system-wide preferences".

  • Can't load network preferences!

Hi! I've been trying to load the network preferences but i could not done it yet. When I do click the button from preferences, just appear "...loading network...". Any suggestion?
    Thanks!

I was able to fix this myself by using one of the techniques suggested here for a different problem. Basically I went into Library/Preferences/System Configuration and deleted networkinterfaces.plist, preferences.plist & com.apple.nat.plist. All were rebuilt when I restarted and went to System Preferences/Network and I was able to load the Network Settings. This didn't fix the problem with my printer, but at least it got the settings up.

  • How can I lock my preferences for network

My network will not allow me to click the padlock to lock in my preferences 17" (Lion) , although it wil on my 15" w/ Snow Leopard, any suggestions?

You cannot if you are using an installed mail profile/account.
If you do not want them viewing your email try to see if you can access it directly through Safari where you have to enter your password each time. If you can then remove the installed mail account.  Yahoo mail works fine in Safari, and so does Gmail. Not sure about others.

  • Locking Network Preferences

    Hello,
I was wondering how I could permanently lock into a particular airport. I installed the linksys system and I want to use my "home" connection. Before I would start the macbook and go online immediately. Now I have to click on the airport icon at the right top area and select the port I want to get into. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,
    nancy

go to system preferences>network, make sure the airport connection is the first one in the left hand side column, then click advanced, and then make sure that airport connection you use most of the time is at the top of the list, drag it there if it is not.
    hope this helps

  • "airport card not installed" and can't open network preferences

I was earlier having the problem of no ip address and not connecting to the Internet and self assigning an ip address.  I tried everything to fix that and on my last attempt I turned off the airport and shut down but now it says I dont have an airport card installed. How do I fix this?

Your running snow leopard which may be the case. Probably not but i recommend doing a clean install of snow leopard if the problem perrsists.
Also I suggest going to the apple store anyways. I personally enjoy finding help on the forums but sometimes if you book in advance going to the apple is a whole lot simpler.
You might also want to try upgrading your operating system to Lion or Mountain Lion which may fix the problem.
Yet another option would be to open up the laptop (Voids your warranty) and check is the airpot card is loose and maybe not being recognized.

  • Locked Access Code for Network Preferences - treo650

I've been using a used treo650 for about a year.  I finally decided to try the web usuage and had sprint activate it.  But it appears that the previous owner of my phone put a access code on the network preferences area I need to finish setting the phone up.  After working with Sprint tech support it looked like the only solution was to do a hard reset on the phone and have the sprint store configure the phone and web info - then I would hotsync to recover my data  - good plan - first part worked - sprint was able to configure the phone and it worked!  - But when I hotsync'd it to recover personal data the network preferences were overridden and I'm back to a lock network preference and no web access.
Looking for a way of defeating the access code and still being able to hotsync -------   I have a few ideas put they are pretty drastic.
    Any Ideas?
Post relates to: Treo 650 (Sprint)

When you sync, you get a lot of little settings files along with the big databases containing your contacts and calendar. I don't know which files are responsible for network settings, but if you have time, you could rummage around in your profile folder. Not sure where yours is, but mine was under c:\Program Files\palmOne\username when I originally installed, and when I installed the downloadable version of Palm Desktop, it was created under c:\Program Files\Palm\username.
    == Edit ==
    A backup would be advisable.

  • Can't edit network passwords. Networks locked?

Running Leopard on 1.5GHz PB. Airport recognizes wireless router but can't get online or connect to server. It requires WPA2 personal login but when I select advanced options in network preferences and select the network I want to edit, it appears with just a WPA Personal password. When I double click this network to edit it I am presented with many security options including WPA2 personal but when I select WPA2 Personal, input my password and then click "add", it reverts back to just WPA Personal not WPA2. If I click on the "Show Networks" button, my listed networks all have a locked symbol next to them.
I am presuming that I have to unlock these networks in order to edit them. How do I unlock these networks? Or is there something obvious I have overlooked here?

    Look at this link. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9372513
    I did BDAqua's suggestion
To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.

  • Why can I not add a server to the DNS list in Network Preferences?

I've run namebench to find faster DNS servers, but I can't add any DNS addresses to the DNS panel in Network Preferences.  Running Yosemite on a iMac.  I'm connected wifi to my Extreme. Thanks

Are the System Preferences unlocked? You need admin access to edit these settings, click the lock if it is closed to block the preferences with the admin username & password.
Is the DNS entry grey? That means it is provided by the router in a 'DHCP option'. You should still be able to specify others, click the 'Advanced' button, select the DNS tab & click + to add an entry.

Given that you are logged in as that user, and most likely the admin user of the Mac, then it makes sense that you can change your own settings. If you were logged in as a different user, then you would not have access to change the settings for this admin account.

  • The lock in the Network Preferences opens automatically

My 6 months old intel-based iMac is connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable and a router. For about 4 months there was no problem. Then suddenly I kept being disconnected from the internet for no obvious reason. When I looked into the network preferences I noticed that the lock, which prevents changes of the settings and which can be opened only with the password, had opened AUTOMATICALLY without anybody entering the password. After I close the lock and reset the router I can go online again, after a day or so the same happens again. What could be the reason for this?

    Hi
Try this, go to Security and Privacy in System Preferences and unlock if locked, then tick the second box down in "For all accounts on this computer" called "require an administrator password to access system preferendes with lock icons"
    Fingers crossed.

  • HT201184 Network Preferences Lock Unlocks upon Logout/Login restart etc

On my macbookpro OSX 10.6.8 even though I always set network preferences as locked, every time I shutdown the computer and log back in the NETWORK PREFERENCES are unlocked. If I make a change to the network prefs while shown as "unlocked" I am still prompted to enter my computer's main password? If the network prefs are unlocked, why do I have to enter a password? If I open network prefs and immediately click Lock then if I decide to change from wifi to ethernet I am prompted to enter my computers password?

Well my connection didn't hold..... the IP (numbers) address keeps changing, which I don't know is my isp carriers fault, or my modems, or hopefully not the computer, I get a computer pop-up that says, can't find ppoe address. In the network preferences panel, when I retype my isp password and (apply now), I get a connection that will hold for a while. I'm a bit reluctant to buy a new modem, because I think this is my isp carriers fault, I suggested to them, maybe it's the modem, and they want me to buy a new modem from them. If you've been with an isp for years, the least they could do is provide a new modem, every once in a while. So I think I should just get a new carrier, paying too much for the one I have now anyway

  • My wi-fi worked fine on Airport Express two days ago.  Now the light is green, but I can't get the Internet on my satellite connection.  I've checked Network Preferences, Aiport Express menu, and the satellite tech support. The Ethernet connection works.

My wi-fi connection from my iPad via the Airport Express Base Station on my home computer worked just fine until yesterday morning.  I have a Macintosh G5 with a satellite connection.  I could not get an Internet connection.  After using the Network Preferences and Aiport Express applications several times, then unplugging and replugging in the computer, satellite modem and Airport Express module, checking the satellite dish for any obstructions, and so on, the computer still wouldn't connect to the Internet.  (The green light was on in the Airport Express module.)  I called the satellite company technical support division last night.  The tech couldn't find any problem with the satellite connection.  When I plugged the satellite modem cord directly into the Ethernet outlet on my computer, I could pick up the Internet.
Today, the Airport Express module still has a green light but still doesn't connect to the Internet.  The only thing I can think of is that lights went out for about 15 minutes yesterday morning.  All of my electronics, except the Aiport Express Base Station, are on surge protectors.  Why would the Airport Express module still have a green light if it was damaged by the electrical outage?
I bought the module in 2009.  I have never had problems with Apple equipment before this. Is this base station fixable?
    I would appreciate your suggestions.

Hello everyone.  I too have experienced the same problem Mary described starting on the same day she mentioned January 12.  I have a G5 iMac, a G5 mini-mac, and a G4 laptop.  They were all working fine but all have mostly the same problem now in that the G4 does not connect at all and the G5s connect once in a while after restarts but do not maintain the connection.  In my case there was no power interruption.  In fact, the G4 laptop was not even connected to the home power connection.  My iPad2 and iPhone 4s wireless work fine and a wireless PC and Android tablet work fine as well.  The G5 and G4 work fine on an ethernet connection. ISP tech support (AT&T u-Verse) was very generous with their time in trying to solve my problem although it was established early on that their connection and equipment was working fine and that the problem was with my computers.  They walked me through a manual reset of all the particulars on IP addresses etc. so the problem was not related to that either. In the end ISP tech support concluded that the problem must lie with the Airport driver.  For some reason it changes the IP addresses to an incorrect address so it cannot connect.  Indeed when I tried the diagnostics on the G4 I got a window Pop-up that said an application had reset my settings. (In retrospect I seem to recall that I may have gotten that same message early on with the G5s but at that time I did not think much about it and went about trying to reset the settings but that process never concluded well) I think that the problem may be that there must have been an update of the Airport software that was not backward compatible with the G5 and older Macs.  I mention all this for two reasons.  First, perhaps someone out there who knows better than I do how to bring this to Apple's attention and perhaps they will address this.  Second, I would be curious to know whether there is anyway one can return a configuration on Macs to some earlier time period (as you can on PCs) when everything worked and then leave it that way foregoing any subseqent upgrades or any subsequent apps?

  • Can't load Network Settings from System Preferences

For some reason I can't load Network Settings from System Preferences anymore - it just stalls with the bar showing "Loading Network" and doing nothing. This is happening in conjunction with a new inability to connect to a network printer - it won't show up on the list of printers, even when I manually enter the IP address. Something is obviously mucked up - can anyone tell me what it might be & how I can fix it? Thanks!
