Can't log and transfer avchd video

I was used to the firewire, mini-dv tape capture process, but have been confused about how to import my video footage from an AVCHD camcorder into Premiere Pro CS5 on my mac.
The capture window doesn't work with the camcoder connected by USB or with the memory card from the camera in a USB card reader.
When I use Final Cut Pro it has a log and transfer option that opens a window where all of the clips from the camcorder or the memory card are shown and you can preview the clips and even set in/out points on the clips before deciding which ones to import and how much of each clip to import. This can save hard disk space by not copying over useless footage.
That was the way that the capture worked with firewire also, with both Premiere Pro and FCP, and I'm surprised that this functionality is not available with avchd files in this version of Premiere for the mac.
How can I preview the video footage and select which clips to import or set in/out points in Premiere Pro CS5?
Thanks for any advice.

You should probably ask this question in an Adobe Premier Pro forum. This forum area is specifically for Apple's Pro Video applications.

  • Log and Transfer AVCHD footage

    Hello,
got a bizarre situation here with trying to log and transfer AVCHD footage: It's worked perfectly fine before, the volume automatically showing up in the Log and Transfer window. I shot additional footage on the same card (without erasing the older footage) and now nothing shows up in the Log and Transfer window. File structure on the card is intact, FCP seetings (ProRes LT) are the same and I can see the footage is there on the camera. Whatever I try, I can't get FCP to 'see' the card's content, not even the older footage which it transferred alright before.
I'm running FCP 6.0.6 and the only difference I can think of to the previous time when log and transfer worked is that I may have updated FCP (not sure what my previus version was, but it was only an incremental update).
I'm totally at aloss with this one – anyone out there with a clue what might be causing this?
    Thanks in advance!

Try using the add volume button and pointing to the card, which I assume is mounted on the desktop. If you select the volume do the clips load?

  • Can't log and transfer with panasonic ag-hvx200p

I just bought a new macbook pro and installed Final Cut Studio 2 (I also have it installed on my Mac Pro, for about 18 months now). When I connect my Panasonic AG-HVX200P it is recognized on my desktop. However, when I start up FCP (version 6.0.1) I'm told it cannot locate an external device... but, it does recognize the camera when I go to the "log and transfer" function. It even loads all the clips and allows me to play them before I add anything to the queue. But when I actually select clips to be added to the queue the status wheel spins for a few seconds and then stops... and that's it, just stops.
The weird thing is my Mac Pro DOES allow me to successfully add video clips to the queue. The only thing I can think of right now is, maybe, I have a bad firewire cable for the MacBook Pro. It uses a 4-pin to 9-pin, and the Mac Pro uses the other sized connection (sorry, I don't know it).
    Thanks,
    Eric

    Hello Eric,
2 things that come to my mind :
I guess you have pressed the Camera button (next to the MCR/VCR) long enough to initialize the "drive".
You should absolutely transfere all files before doing any log and capture to a hard drive. Don't use the "Finder" but a transfer software from Panasonci or anyone else. Don't do it directly from the cam.
    Hope that helps,

  • Canon HF-10: Log and Transfer AVCHD Problem

When I try to Log and Transfer clips from my HF-10 on my Mac Pro (Intel, Dual-Quad Core) I get the following message "AVCHD media is unsupported on PowerPC based hardware." even though the machine is an intel-mac.
When I do it on my Mac Book Pro (Intel, Dual-Core) it works fine in Log and Capture.
Can someone please tell me how to correct this issue on my tower? I've followed the steps listed on this document: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7194922#7194922 and it didnt help me.
    Please help!!!!

Not until you've searched the data base on that camera with the link I provided. You probably should search this forum and the forum at http://www.creativecow.net (the FCP forum there) on your camera and on AVCHD etc. But sure sounds like a software problem... the machine seems to be sending the signal to FCP that it is a PPC and not an intel... so I'd guess that to be a software install error of some sort. But it's a guess... That's why I suggested the reinstall to rule that out or fix you up...

  • Log and transfer AVCHD  causes crash

Shot some test footage with a Panasonic AG HMC151.
If I try log and transfer, FCP 6.0.4 sees the clips and I can view them in the L&T window. But as soon as I try to transfer them to the bin the program crashes.
    Any suggestions.
    KC

Have you copied the SDHC card to your desktop and tried L/T from there?
And I take it you are using an Intel Mac for ingesting?
Finally, I believe 6.0.5 added support for the HMC150/1. make certain you've updated.

  • When i log and transfer AVCHD the Clips transfer with blackouts

I shoot on an AF100. FCP log and transfer (prores 422) consistently works well for me but randomly a few clips will convert fully, but have 90% of the clip blacked out.
The clips will show up in my capture scratch, in my assets bin, but when i scrub them on the preview monitor after the first 20 seconds or so, it turns black?? Although the clip is it's proper length there is no sound and only black. But the clip previews in full in L&T?
    Any ideas?!

Are you continuing to work in FCP or another app whilst Log and Transfer is importing? If so, try reimporting one of those clips that has not come in properly, but this time once you start the import then leave the Mac alone to complete the process. See if the newly imported clip(s) are ok.

  • Problems with the canon xf plugin for fcp 7 Can't log and transfer mxf files.

    Hi
I can't log & transfer mxf files from a c300 camera in FCP 7 even though I installed the xf plugin.
When I looked at canon's website this link comes up but it doesn't work.
    http://usa.canon.com/nw3s/CanonUSA/DownloadContents/English/0200206002EN.htm
    Any suggestions?
Or other plugins that might work?
    Thanks,
    James

    Hello jameskendi,
The most obvious reason we can tell as to why this may not work properly is the version of FCP you are using.  You mention using FCP 7, although the plugin is specifically for FCP X.  This is why you're having such difficulty.  If possible, we'd recommend using an updated computer and or software to process these files.

  • Log and Transfer AVCHD

    Hi,
I have some video clips on my Panasonic gf1 camera shot using the AVCHD codec. I can access the files through Log & Transfer window which has an automated import setting to code the file into ProRes422.
The original video is shot at 720 at 50p and the ProRes conversion makes it 25. This is great for regular editing but it means I lose the ability to conform the 50p to 25p in Cinetools to get good slo-motion.
Anyone got a answer to how you can fiddle the import settings for the Log & Transfer?
    I am using FCP 6.0.6.
    Thanks,
    Andy

I have found the answer, thanks to Shedworx......
In our development of AVCHD Lite support for all ShedWorx products, we've come across a potentially confusing area in regard to the video format used in the new Panasonic Lumix AVCHD Lite cameras.
The AVCHD Lite format for these cameras is quoted as '50p recording' but with a disclaimer that the CCD records at 25fps.
Some users might be led to believe that the 50p format (60p for NTSC) will give them 50 frames per second. This is not the case. 50p is a signal setting stating that AVCHD Lite from these cameras will play back at 50 fields per second, from a captured video of 25 frames per second.
How does this work? Well, they provide a 50p output signal by repeating each frame's display twice.
Why would they do this? We can only assume that the 50p signal may look better on some displays (this was not that case in our tests). As an example, in non-digital cinemas, the films are provided as 24 frames per second but the projectors run at 48 cycles per second to reduce flicker.
We can tell you that there are 25 frames per second in the H.264 video stream within a AVCHD Lite video.
For now, we are converting AVCHD Lite to 25fps output (both WMV on the PC and AIC on the Mac). We have tested this approach by taking our converted AIC footage, editing in Final Cut Express, then exporting to AppleTV for playback. We've then examined the video quality by:
    - playing back direct from our Panasonic DMC-FT1 via HDMI to the HDTV (Sony Bravia 46")
    - copying the raw AVCHD Lite files to a PS3 and playing back
    - playing back the Final Cut edited movie through an AppleTV
We have seen no noticeable difference between any of these playback options, making us confident that going from 50p to an (effective) 25p signal, still preserving the 25 frames per second that was recorded, has no effect on video quality.

  • Can FCP log and transfer footage from the Panasonic full HD 1080p camcorder

Hi, my subject heading says it all. But I have read a review of the current consumer HD camcorders from Panasonic that says they have their own codec, and that it cannot be edited on any software but their own, which is not available in a Mac version... the review was a few months old, though, so hopefully Apple have now put in place updates so that we can ingest footage from this camera...
Does anyone know about this? If not, any idea where I can find out?
Thanks very much for any light on this situation!

Sorry if you didn't know about this, but the review says that when recording at 1080/50p Panasonic uses a proprietory codec... I assumed that would be any model they produce that records at 50p.
The review of the Panasonic HDC-TM700 states "The camcorder uses traditional AVCHD compression for every shooting mode other than the 1080/50p setting. (my emphasis)<
If the reviewer doesn't know, how would we? We're FCP geeks, not universal camera knowledge base wonks.
Research the codec specifically and the camera model you are likely to find some kind of hack or workaround. I have two Panasonic hdx170s and we have absolutely no issues bringing in full 1080 from the P2 cards but most of our stuff is shot 720.

  • AVCHD log and transfer - Only from a camera?

I am thinking about upgrading my camera to a AVCHD camera.  I saw on a post that you can only log and transfer AVCHD footage from the camera and not just the card attached via card reader.  Can someone shed some light on this.  I want to be able to shoot, transfer/backup onto an external HDD and then Log and Transfer from the drive.  I want to keep the camera busy out in the field and not tied up on my desk.
    Thanks community!

  • AVCHD Log and Transfer Woes.  Please advise.

Folks, I am using the latest version of FInal Cut (7.02) to log and transfer AVCHD content from a Panasonic Lumix GH1. Many clips get imported but many stop with errors ( a stream error as note by a exclamation mark in a red alert icon in the status column) even though they play back in the log and transfer window, VLC, Toast 10.
I've had to resort to using Toast 10 to transcode which is disheartening that it can and FCP can't. Plus it's slow. Another strange thing is that in FCP the number of clips that are successfully transcoded outnumber the number of clips for the same reel in Log and Transfer.
Per some other message board to troubleshoot, I've updated my FxFactory plugin app, uninstalled Perian, deactivated the pulldown feature in Log and Transfer, and changed the AVCHD audio settings to plain stereo. None of these efforts has changed the stream errors I am getting.
I could use some advice on this.

L&T and Lumix GH1 footage needs the file structure in the 'PRIVATE' folder intact.
So don't delete a single thing in there from the computer - if you want to remove clips you must do it from the camera. And when doing back-ups to a harddrive, copy the entire PRIVATE folder and again, don't change anything in there once it's on the harddrive. Then L&T can still access the clips, you don't have to do it from the SDHC card.
    And don't include photo captures.

  • I cannot log and transfer videos larger than 4 gb

I have final cut express 4.0.1, Macbook pro intel core duo 2 ghz, 2 gb ram, Canon HF100.
I saved my raw video onto a external drive, which is also my scratch disk. I have been able to log and transfer short videos fine. When I try to do this for longer videos, I get an exclamation point on my long and transfer window and my clip transfer is in idle.
I have noticed that when the long videos (over 5 min) are transferring, their sizes get bigger but then max out at 4 GB.
My audio is set to plain and I have the latest OS. I also changed my recording settings to match my playback settings = RT safe, video quality dynamic, frame rate dynamic.
    Please help.

    How is the external formatted?
It should be Mac OS Extended.
Most drives are pre-formatted to suit Windows FAT32, file sizes are restricted if so.

  • Final Cut Express Log and Transfer files not playing audio on another mac

I recently purchased a new Mac Pro for video editing for work, and am having some issues with it. Previously i was working on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.4.11, on Final Cut Express 4.
I used Log & Transfer to get the AVCHD videos from my Canon HF 11 onto my mac, and had no issues. Where my problems started was when I moved my video files to my new Mac Pro running OS 10.5.6. Now when I open those video files in either Quicktime or FCE, the VIDEO plays but _not the audio_. I thought maybe the video files were bad, but when I tried the original files on the new Mac, they still didn't work. I don't know if there's some codec that isn't on the new mac or if there's some other problem... I just know that my new amazing machine cannot play the files that my 3 year old one can. I'm not new to computers, but I'm not an Apple guru. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well I can try trashing the files, but I can't log and transfer the files again, as it's months of footage that aren't on the camera anymore. But i did find something else out. The files that were recorded with the camera's built-in mic recording is fine and with sound, but the files that I used my wireless mic setup had no sound. I don't know why that is, because they worked fine on the MacBook Pro. I tried log and transferring a new clip on the Mac Pro wit;h footage using the wireless mic, and still no sound.

#36 - One or More files failed to import.
Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the camera card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the Log and Transfer Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO...in the Log and Transfer Import window...in the Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn't have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

  • Log and Transfer dropping or Off Lining Clips!

Folks, I need your help please.
I'm trying to Log and Transfer AVCHD files from an external HD. There are 6 Chips in total.
But when I Log and Transfer some Clips are not transferring over. EG. On 1 Chip there are 37 Clips. But only 28 were transferred. And there was no warning symbol indicating that the Clips were not transferred. It's only because I saw that there seemed to be far too few Clips in the Browser compared to the L&T window that I realised.
I can then go back and transfer them again. Sometime the transfer works. Sometimes not.
Another problem which I'm experiencing is that in the L&T process some Clips already transferred are randomly going off-line. But I can't go back and re-capture them - even though they are in the Capture folder.

Things now are just going from bad to surreally bad!
I deleted all the files from my Capture folder and started all over again.
I have 6 Chips and have set a BIN for each Chip.
I then Set Login BIN and Transfer the content of the Chip into the relevant BIN.
At first all seems to go well.
But then when I go into the BIN once all the AVCHD files have been Transferred to PR 422 LT all the Clips are muddled and jumbled up. EG I made sure that Chip 1 was Transferred fully and properly. But when I revisited it Clips 1 - 4 are nowhere to be found.
Chip 5 when transferring shows all the Clips have been transferred (Blue Circle is filled in) but instead of there being the 17 Clips that should be there there are only 6
What on earth am I doing wrong/is happening???
