Can't Log In through log on screen!!

Hi, I've been having a problem with my iBOok G4, i restarted it the other day and when it came back on, it goes to the log on screen for maybe 10 seconds then goes to a Darwin screen. After maybe another 30 seconds it goes to a blue screen with the wheel spinning. What can I do to get back to my desktop, I have finals on Thursday and can't get my notes off. Help please!!!

You have a couple of options.
1) Most preferable, if you have another Mac accessible with a firewire port, you can connect the two in target disk mode. This will allow you to pull data off of your iBook G4 even if you can't boot it to the Mac OS X desktop.

2) If you have a Mac OS X 10.4 install disc, you can boot from that disc by holding down C right after powering up your computer. You can run Disk Utility from that 10.4 install disc to "Repair Permissions" and "Repair Disk"
CAUTION though - if at all possible, please back up using Firewire Target Disk Mode listed in Option #1. Your drive sounds like it is in a fragile state.
3) If #2 does not work, reinstall Mac OS X from the install disc and choose "Archive and Install" option. This will keep your files and user settings intact.

4) If #3 does not work, you may need to do a full "Erase and Install", also covered in the article above. CAUTION: You must have a backup before selecting this option. You will erase everything on your computer.
Again, finding another Mac user or visiting your local Apple Store's genius bar will be invaluable because you can put the iBook in Target Disk mode and hopefully get your files off before attempting OS X repair.

    Hi everyone
    Just made the jump from Windows to Mac and am loving it! However, occasionally when waking my MBP's screen will show the password box and the wallpaper, but no cursor. It's super frustrating as I can't log on.
    It doesn't happen every time and leaves me head scratching!
    Any ideas ?

    Start up your Mac in Safe Mode
    A Safe Mode boot can take longer then a normal boot so be patient.
    Once you are in Safe Mode, click the Apple menu icon top left in your screen.
    From the drop down menu click Restart.
    Safe Mode removes caches that may help.

  • Can't log in, screen goes black after trying.

    So when I try to log in, the screen goes black, after a few seconds, when I move the mouse around, press a few keys on the keyboard, the login screen comes back. But the same thing happens when i try to log in, it just keeps going black. What should I do? I did have the Time Machine in place, but if there is a simple fix for this issue, that would be great.

    By any chance did you or someone else ever set up an EFI firmware password on this system? It could explain why your system won't boot from the optical drive when the Install DVD is inserted since many of those snag key features are disabled when the EFI firmware password is enabled. It would most commonly be used in a school environment. Here's more information on the firmware password:

    If you have an EFI firmware password and can't remember it you'll need to reset it before continuing. A quick Google search will turn up methods for performing a reset.
    If you don't have an EFI password set try this. Instead of holding down the 'C' key, hold down the option key instead to load the system picker. Make sure the Install DVD is in the optical drive. Does the Install DVD appear as one of the boot options? It may take a minute for it to appear once the hard drive icon appears. If the Install DVD never shows up, and you don't hear the optical drive making any noise then you may have an optical drive problem too.

  • MD G4 can't get past the log in screen

    Trying to diagnose what's wrong with the trusty mirrored doors G4.  The light goes on when I press the power button, the chime sounds, but can't get past the log in screen, and the mouse arrow is stuck on the left top of the screen; I can't get the mirrored door to open, to try starting with the original cd; can't get to how to start it from an external drive. 
    At this point I'm not going to spend much $ to save this computer which has served as a backup device for the past 3 years,  but would like to get in one more time to make sure I have everything I want to save.  Suggestions?

    If you have enabled remote log in and know how to ssh into the Mac from another computer - reply and I'll walk you through the commands to look at the logs before you log in from the keyboard.
    If not - you should boot from a CD and try to repair the disk and possibly look at the logs using the console utility.
    Please advise if you want to look at the logs to see what the problem is or if you can fix it from using the CD's to repair the disk.

  • Blue Screen - Can't Log on to my Account

    Suddenly, I cannot log on to my Mac - G4 Tower - OSX 10.4.7. When I switch it on, all I get is a blue screen - after the "starting MAC OS X" box and the spinning gear. The Mac is set up so that my account automatically logs on but nothing happens - the screen flashes and the spinning gear re-appears frequently but I cannot log on. I have started in single user mode and run fcsk -fy; but this had made no difference.
    I have started in SAFE MODE and can log on using another account (Supervisor) but when I try to log on to my account, I return to the log on screen which still says SAFE MODE.
    From the Supervisor account I cannot access the Login items for my own account, so I'm not sure how I can check them and remove anything I think is causing the problem.
    I'm beginning to think that my account is corrupted in some way but really have no idea what to do next. Can anyone help please?

    do you mean you went through the steps i suggested, or all the ones in the article? if you went through all the steps in the article, and it still isn't working, you should archive and install your operating system. this should allow you to access your account again. steps for the archive are outlined here. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120. make sure you repair the disk beforehand with disk utility, and run software updates afterwards to bring the operating system up to the current version, or things may not work properly. you will have to reinstall any third party software.     Try a reset:
    Hold the Sleep and Home button down until you see the Apple logo.

    I am trying to log into my Tesco credit card on line banking but can't open the logging on screen. When i try I get an error message saying The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. I am able to load this fine by using internet explorer.

  • Could not click on anything in Recovery disk and log in screen, but I can move the cursor around. Using 10.8, not sure what's wrong, anyone have an idea?

    So the problem is, I cannot click on anything in the Recovery Disk and Log in screens (to enter your password), but I can move the cursor. My trackpad works fine everywhere else except for these screens. If I connect a USB mouse, I am able to click on things in these screens.
    NOTE: I am not just tapping, I am really clicking on the trackpad.
    I recall some time ago when this wasn't happening, not sure if that was when I was on Leopard. I sort of suspect 10.8.x, but I'm not too sure.
    Has anyone else experienced this? Would appreciate help. Thanks!

    Try an SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.

  • Installed login screen, but can't log in

    I followed the beginners guide which led me to install arch a few times due to my inexperience, but I finally was able to get it to run, I ended up installing a log in screen with kde, but when I rebooted I tried to log in using root, but it didn't work. I was wondering how will I be able to log in without trying to install again.
    The problem was I didn't assign any users for the myhost log in screen so root won't cut it anymore. And I was wondering if there was any default log in or something before I'd try installing it again.

    use a live cd enter the root partition and edit the initab run lvl so you can enter bash instead of kdm... or edit .xinitrc in /~ so that it says   exec xterm and comment th eline that says exec startkde usin "#" also remove the kdm daemon in your rc.conf so that the kdm wont show up next time you restart... I hope this helps.

    I recommend you contact AT&T's dedicated BB Support staff (call their front line, request escalation to BB Support) and have them check to be sure that your account with them is correctly configured for this device. Sometimes when switching devices things don't fully automatically move behind the scenes, and only they (ATT) can validate that.

    Woah there fella, if your files have been deleted and you still keep the same hard-drive you might want to use some undelete software first, such as http://www.officerecovery.com/freeundelete/ which I am not familiar with. Just make sure you recover the files into an external or different drive than the one you are recovering first... Otherwise it won't work. You could porbably restore most of your data this way, music and everything else.
    Otherwise:
    1. Open iTunes (latest version).
    2. On the left ruler, under "Store", click on "Purchased".
    3. On the bottom right of the screen click on "Download Previous Purchases".
    4. Download whatever you like.
