Can't log in to Pop Account

I'm trying to configure my wife's email account. She has a POP account which will eventually be migrated to IMAP, but for for now it's POP. When I try connecting, the Touch immediately pops up with something about a secure connection failing and that a certificate not being valid. I can then hit continue and get a verifying... forever. This email account doesn't support SPA, but I can't find any way to configure on the Touch what settings are used as far as secure vs. non secure connections either for the POP or SMTP server. Is there some way to get to an advanced configuration screen? This is one thing that really irks me about Apple. They make things really easy for a large chunk of people, but if there is ever any troubleshooting and need to "get under the hood" the information to do so is so hard to find!

I saw this same problem when I first got my touch. I don't know if this applies to your situation, but when I let the verification process run long enough, I eventually got a dialog that said something like "could not connect using secure <somethingsomething>. Connect without using secure <somethingsomething>?" (As you can see I'm not real knowledgeable about how email works so I don't know exactly what the dialog said; <somethingsomething> might have been "SSL".) When I clicked yes at this dialog, it created the account and I was able to get into the advanced settings. I think the process went faster (I had to do this for 3 different POP accounts) when I was connected to a private passworded wi-fi, as opposed to a public unlocked wi-fi -- don't know if this was relevant or just a coincidence. Sorry I can't help more but I thought I'd share my experience in case it's useful.

After clicking "sign in" at the bottom of the apps main page, it brought up another menu where I clicked "Choose existing Apple ID". After pressing this the menu disappeared and nothing happened. I tried this multiple times and received the same result each time. I tried the other available option of creating a new AP ID to log in with and that one worked perfectly fine. I am clueless as to why the log in for me is either not able to load or just completely blocking me from getting back into my iTunes account on my phone. Not only can I not listen to the music I currently have, but I cannot log in to purchase the new music that I wanted to with my unused iTunes gift cards

    I have the same problem too and tried alot of things like time zone , restarting or changing DNS of wifi connection to 8.8.8.8 still nothing happens .. !!

  • Why do I get iCal error messages on my iMac saying that it can't log into my Gmail account and that the password may be incorrect - when the password is correct?

    You can't.
    Return the phone to whoever you bought it from and get a refund. Without the previous owners password you will not be able to enter your own iCloud acount, and when you update the phone, you won't be able to re-activate it as it will be locked to the previous owners account.
    You should've checked the phone was not locked to someone else's iCloud account BEFORE buying it.

    Therefore you should still use your "old" (existing) iCloud mail address - you cannot change the iCloud mail address.
    However you could add an alias instead to you iCloud account.

    To ensure that a service or background program is not interfering with your log in, I recommend booting your system into Safe Mode.

  • "Sender Name is Invalid" (can't send email from POP account) iPhone 2.1

    I updated from V2.0.2 to V2.1 today. I also swapped out my original iPhone EDGE for a new iPhone EDGE due to unrelated problems with the speaker.
    Upon testing things after restoring from backup to the new phone I discovered that I could no longer SEND email from my POP account. I could receive email just fine on that account. Sending and receiving email on my MobilMe account also worked, as did sending and receiving email via the POP account while on the Mac computer I use to sync with this iPhone.
    After digging into this with AppleCare we discovered that somehow the Port Address for the Outgoing Mail Server for that POP account had been changed from 25 to 587 on the iPhone.
    Changing it back to 25 fixed my problem.
    We don't know whether the problem was due to the 2.1 upgrade or due to something in the restore process after swapping the phones.
    If you get the error message "Sender Name is Invalid" while trying to send email from a POP account on your iPhone, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and select the line for your POP account.
    Now scroll down to the Outgoing Mail Server entry which should show "SMTP" and the name of the outgoing mail server for that POP account. Select that line. This will display a list of servers with your POP account server showing at the top as the Primary Server. Select that line.
    In the panel that displays, check the Server Port. If it is something odd like 587, that may be your problem. Select the line and you can edit it to something more normal like 25. Touch the "SMTP" button at the top left of the number entry screen to accept that new value.
    We discovered that after correcting that value on the iPhone it STAYS corrected even after doing a new Sync with iTunes, or after MobileMe syncs.

    Depending on the mail service you are using, Port 25 or Port 587 are usually acceptable for outgoing
    SMTP mail. Many cafes will block the customary port 25 to prevent spammers from using their
    wireless access.

    Also be sure for each mail account to turn ON the secondary AT&T server shown at the bottom
    of the SMTP server list for each account -- it will make your transition from wireless to Edge
    to 3G networks much more reliable.

  • Problem with software update - now can't log on to administrator account

    Hello -
    I updated software yesterday and didn't pay attention to what was updating. I always just install the updates when they come up.
    Now I can't login to my administrator account or change the password. I could log into another account, but iTunes won't stay open. It opens for about 10 seconds then closes.
    So I'm assuming that the updates were a mac OSX update and an iTunes update.
    Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix?
    Is there anyway to "undo" the most recent update?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

    Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
    The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
    Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
    If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
    If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
    May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD...
