Can't log into User Account after disrupting external hard drive

I keep my account (Admin) on an external hard drive due to the large volume of data. I mistakenly pulled out the USB cable to the drive while trying to resolve another issue. Subsequently, it appeared a lot of my data was missing. I restarted the computer and couldn't log into my user account. It seems pulling the USB cable to the external drive corrupted something. I verified both disks (internal & external) and all was OK. I ran Disk Permissions and tried to repair. The resultant information is attached at the bottom of this message.
I can access my data on the hard drive from my laptop over the network. I just can't get into my user account directly. Any ideas on how I can address this issue?

There may have been another solution to this problem but I went the route of creating another user name and migrated the data over to that name. Thank you!

  • Can't log into user accounts

Before the Christmas break, our Mac OS X Server was happy and running smoothly. Upon return, the individual clients cannot log on and the XRAIDs are acting strange (lights won't turn off on power down). I've since completely powered down and unplugged the 2 (of 4) RAID arrays that were acting up and they have all rebooted normally now--although I still se nothing in RAID Admin. On the client computers, however, we still can't log into our individual accounts--only the Admin account.
    What gives?

    Hi
Check the physical structure of your network, switches are switched on, cables connected etc. If you can’t communicate with the XServe RAID using RAID Admin is it possible someone has removed the network cables?
    Hope this helps, Tony

  • Can I sync my itunes account with an external hard drive to save memory on my computer?

I have a computer with limited space, so I transferred my itunes library to an external hard drive.  Now my problem is syncing my itunes account on my computer with my itunes library on the external hard drive.  Can someone explain how to sync these two up?

When iTunes launches it looks for a iTunes Library .XML file in your Music/iTunes Folder, if it's not there, then it creates one.
So you got the entire iTunes Folder on the powered external drive (you also should have a backup someplace too)
Now launch iTunes and then quit it.
Look in your external drive iTunes Folder for a iTunes Library .XML file, copy that and replace the new one in your iTunes Folder on your boot drive.
Now open this .XML file in a Text program that has "Find and Replace" ability, you have to take all the old pathnames to your content and replace them with the new pathname.
    For instance \Windows\Users\Mark\Music\iTunes Folder
should now be something like this:
    \DriveB\MusicFolder\iTunes Folder
Get the idea? your replacing all the partial pathnames to match the new drive.
You need to have the external drive mounted and ready, then launch iTunes which will look for the .XML file in your boot drive >iTunes Folder, then when you click to play a song, instead of it finding it in your boot drive iTunes Folder, it's in your external drive iTunes Folder.

  • I can't transfer my user settings from my external hard drive to my new Mac

I purchased a new MacBook because I had an unfotunate accident with my last computer. Everything is saved on my LaCie mini external hard drive under my User Folder. Everytime I try to overwrite my user file (click and drag from the LaCie) I get a message that the transfer cannot be completed because something is in use. It's a different file everytime. Once it was the file for the Times New Roman font--I don't know how it could have been in use.
    What am I doing wrong?!

Hi rockstardeb, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You shouldn't try dragging it, rather use Migration Assistant in your Utilities folder and choose "Transfer my data from another partition".

  • I can't find my user account photo on my hard drive.

I can't find the photo I took of myself with the iSight camera of my iMac, which is used in my user account, on my hard drive.
When I go to System Preferences, Accounts, and click on the photo next to Change Password, a drop down window appears. In this window, I can either choose one of the images that came with Leopard as my icon, or I can choose "Edit Picture"
When I choose "Edit Picture" another drop down window opens. In this window I can edit my image a bit by moving it around and/or making it larger or smaller. I can also choose "Recent Pictures", which gives me a list of recently used pictures, that are different from the default icons.
Another option is to click on the button "Take a video snapshot", which bring up a count down, and then takes a snapshot with the iSight camera. Once that picture is taken, I can hit "Set", and I have a new account icon.
The last option, "Choose", brings up the Finder, which then allows me to choose any picture I want, as my account icon.
I have not been able to find the picture on my hard drive, that the option "Take a video snapshot" takes. There is no option presented to give that picture a name either at the time you take the picture, which would make it easier to find. It is not in the Photo Booth folder.
BTW, the same picture is also used in my file in Address book. And here the same thing is true. I can't find the location on my hard drive where this picture resides.
    Does anyone know?

    Hello Abrasha Staszewski
I can't find the photo ... used in my user account...
Look in your Mac's Hard drive / Library / Caches folder. (NOT your "User" Library)
It will have a filename like this: com.apple.user501pictureCache.tiff
The "501" part may be a different number if there are multiple users on your Mac.
You can save a copy of this file in your Home / Documents folder if you like, but do not delete, rename, or move the one in the Hard drive / Library / Caches folder.
Your user account file "belongs" to OS X, and it is part of the info OS X manages and updates for you. Unless you are an experienced OS X user, I advise against manually changing, moving, or deleting files outside your Documents folder without specific instructions from someone who KNOWS that it is safe to do so. Let OS X and your applications manage the file system.

  • How do user accounts function with external hard drives?

I realized in the help menu that it implies that users can be setup with AEBS and external drives... and with the internal drive of a TC. Since I only have a TC, the thing I noticed is that when I setup a User, it seems to exist on the internal drive. It is not obvious to me that the external drive also has a user folder... it may not. The instructions are very much NOT specific... does anyone have any idea how this really works internally in the TC... and how does that compare to an AEBS with two USB drives?
    Thanks...

This is the only pertinent information in the pdf manual.

  • Cannot Log into AIM account after multiple tries

This problem is a nightmare. I really do appreciate the support. Unfortunatly the fix is only temporary. Here is what is going on and what Fixes I have tried.
The problem is on my parents G5 power PC (~2006)
They have an AOL AIM account.
Ichat worked great for about 4 months.
Then the problems occurred (Can not log into AIM account after mutliple tries).
    We have tried:
Switching to port 443 - this has not worked ever time we have tried it.
Deleting iChat.plist, iChatAgent.plist, and iChatAIM.plist (left the other ichat plists alone like Jabber, Agent, Subnet, etc)
This this restores ichat for about a day then back to the same problem.
We have also tried running disk utlity and repairing permissions and get it going for day some times.
Not sure what else is causing it to drop out and having to delete this times again and again? Any ideas?

    On the Netgear
The Access IP is normally 192.168.0.1 and the User ID is admin and the password is password when the pop down appears.
----Under SYSTEM PREFERENCES>NETWORK It shows Airport Connected to "Netgear 192.168.1.3" do not see User ID or password on the screen?
In the menu on the left the last (or near last item) is UPnP.
    Check this is Enabled.
----Do not see this listed anywhere
About two thirds of the way down the menu is WAN Set up
In hear Disable the Port Scan Line (It will read DOS (or SPI) and Port Scan)
There is another Line about "Blocking Responses to Ping on the WAN port" this needs to be Disabled as well (IChat sends a Ping to confirm where the Visible Invite went to is where the SIP stuff (In the Log about the error) is coming back from).
    On the DNS info.
This should be two IP address normally that are on the Internet.
These should appear on the RCA if it is accessible in a web Browser but more likely on the Router's Set Up pages (or Some sort of Summary page).
A 192.168.x.x address points to the Router (I would guess in this case) and whilst some routes can be DNS servers as well it is not that common and is only really useful to link a MAC (Ethernet and/or WiFi Card - Media Access Card Address) info to a Name for the Computers that are attached.
----Not sure where to find all this in OS 10.5.8
----Under System Preferences>Network with Airport highlighted I click advanced and go to TCP/IP is see two addresses the ipv4 = 192.168.1.3 and the router=192.168.1.1
(I have presumed that there are no other DNS servers are listed and the 192.166 bit was a typo)
---Correct i put a typo as i was not sure if it was secure to post.
If the Computer can do Wifi as well as Ethernet it should not have both Connected to the Router at the same time. (iChat "Sees" it as two Connections to the Internet).
--- The computer is only connected via Airport to the netgear router.

  • Hi, Can anyone recommended software to import dvd to iMovies. I need to import about a dozen homemade DVD's and edit them into a single DVD comprising the 'best bits'. How best can I do this. I have an external hard drive available for the job

Hi, Can anyone recommended software to import dvd to iMovies. I need to import about a dozen homemade DVD's and edit them into a single DVD comprising the 'best bits'. How best can I do this. I have an external hard drive available for the job

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion even though that has it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • How can I set up my TC as an external hard drive only?

How can I set up my TC as an external hard drive for my iMac and my MacBook?
I baught it for the extra space but don't know how to use it. I just keeps on wanting to back up files.
    Help me please.

    Hi,
Thank you for great advice re SuperDuper.
You wasnt to know we didnt live in  USA.  We will try to get the full retail version of Leopard off the net.  We will also phone round the apple resellers.
In the meantime, we are happy running Tiger with the knowledge that SuperDuper has cloned our hard drive in case of a disaster.
SuperDuper recommended backing up the hard drive with a new user account if we were using filevault on the master account.  We backed up our hard drive without creating a new user with filevault as we could not read the pdf `Instuctions as preview was not responding.
Is this copy safe to use as a bootable drive or should we copy our entire HD again using a new user account without filevault?

On imac 10.6.8 using current version of Aperture.  How can I access the Aperture Library  on my external hard drive that I use with time machine for backup?  I can only access the application but not the library..

Go into Time Machine (the program not the bundle on the extrnal disk) and using Time Machine's browser go to the Folder where the library lives. You could look in the library bundle in Time Machine but that won't really tell you much,
If you want to make sure it truely has backed up your library you will need to restore it and open the restored library with Aperture.
If all this still has you confused you need to read up on Time Machine in order to get a feel for how it works, for what it is doing and for how to restore files from it.

    Not a good idea.
What you could do, is have the Library content on the external hard drive and simply tell your iTunes programme to look on the hard drive for your music etc.. However, once you set that up, that hard drive needs to be connected and ready to read, before you start the iTunes programme. If it isn't ready, iTunes will simply go back to the default location for the music, find nothing and then you'll be back here saying that you've lost your Library.
