Stick the 10.6 disk into the machine and reboot holding the option/alt key down on a wired/built in keyboard.
On the second screen, under the Utilities menu is a Password Reset, use it.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
What this will do is reset the password and the user account permissions in the process.
You might have problems with Keychain afterwards, to fix that.

  • I can't log onto my computer

Can someone please tell me how to change the login password on the home screen? I can't get into the computer at all.

I actually cant log onto any accounts from my computer

  • Can not log into server computer with any accounts - "You are unable to login to the user account "abcdefg" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."

I have a Mac mini running the latest version of OS X and Server. Been running fine and flawlessly. However, I had a strange problem with the iCloud preferences panel crashing when I tried to access it, so I rebooted. Now I can not log into the system with any accounts. My master admin account (along with all the others) gives me the error:
You are unable to login to the user account "abcdefg" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred."
I am able to see the server from other macs and I can log into it using the same account, but it only shows me a few of the shared folders I have access to but NOT to my main directories.
Rebooting into Command-R and doing a disk utility, I try and repair permission on that drive and get a bunch of errors like:
ACL found but not expected on Users
    Repaired "Users"
ACL found but not expected on Users/.localized
    Repaired "Users/.localized"
ACL found but not expected on Users/Shared
    Repaired "Users/shared"
ACL found but not expected on Users/Shared/.localized
    Repaired "Users/Shared/.localized"
    Permissions repair complete.
But rebooting is no joy...same problem. Any idea what is going on or how to repair it? Should I do a time machine restore? Complete new OS X install? Any idea what is causing this or how to salvage it?

Got everything to re-install and it worked fine...for a few hours. Then I came in to find ALL of my network users deleted. Just GONE. Then found out the Open Directory was trashed and was unable to open, recover or restore from a backup. Looks like I may have a bad drive here.
I installed a new drive in the system, re-installed and so far (for a couple of hours anyway) the system seems to be working and stable.

  • 10.5.3 Update - Now can't log into to computer.

    Please help.
Installed the update from 10.5.2-10.5.3, and now i can't login to my computer.
It gives me the login screen and I enter my info, and it goes blue for a few seconds then goes back to login.
I created a root user and it does the same thing.
I connected with a Target computer and see all my files fine.
Is there anything I can do to bypass this login screen via my Target by deleting a pref or something?
It's an older G4 iMac that i primarily use for the internet.

  • System Recovery didn't finish and now I can't log into my computer. Help please...

My touchscreen was not working so I tried different steps to fix it and still nothing. So I did a System Recovery and still nothing..So then I did a System Restore to completly wipe everything out back to factory settings...and after I did it I tried to turn my computer on and it won't even go to login with my password it just says Windows did not install properly please restart and install again. I tried phoning Hp support but my warranty is up and I can't pay the 109.00 dollars for a year's worth of phone support and the tech guy nows exactly how to fix it but he couldn't help me can you believe that @#$*...So basically my comp does not work at all...if anybody can help I would so appreciate it...thank you...

SInce you already did it, make sure you have nothing but the keyboard/mouse dongle plugged in and do NOT connect to the internet via wired or wireless and redo a full System Recovery, that should resolve this since something died midway in the last recovery.

  • HT4914 What do you do if you can not log into a computer to access your account? I have 4000+ songs/videos they are backed up on an external hard drive due to a computer that was ready to die, backed all up, new net book doesn't support iTunes? Help!

Can anyone answer the above question?

Not sure what your question is. If you want to sync them to your iPad then you will need to use a computer, you won't be able to connect an external drive to it - there are some wifi-enabled drives that allow you to stream music and videos to an iPad (so you could potentially use your netbook to copy them over to one), but if you want to store them on the iPad then you will need a computer that can run iTunes.
If they are iTunes purchases then you might be able to re-download some of them directly on the iPad via the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app.

  • Can't log into my computer tells me there is no keyboard found so I can't log in when I use the old keyboard it just keeps typing whatever it wants but my password

Can someone tell me how to log in by  passing the sign in screen

Hi Sandi, seems you may need another wired Keyboard to get past this.

  • Can't log in, because computer is looking for bluetooth keyboard

When I start up my computer, it starts to look for a bluetooth keyboard - I guess at some point it recognized my husband's bluetooth keyboard for his iPad.
It means, however, it doesn't recognize my USB keyboard even to key in my password, so I cannot access Preferences to stop it from searching for a bluetooth keyboard. My husband is traveling - with his iPad... Any advice on how to fix this?

By the way the message says that the keyboard isn't connecting because the bluetooth keyboard setup isn't connecting. That it's looking for a wireless keyboard.

  • Need to re-image HP Mini 5103 but I can't log in. HP Mini 5103

Hello-- I have a few minis that I've been using w/ students, but I got them on an individual grant, and recently left my school for a new teaching position.
I want to be able to use the HP Mini 5103's with my new students, but they were imaged by the techs at my old school.  Windows 7 was replaced with Windows XP.
I tried restarting and pressing F11, but can't get it to do anything.
Is it worth it to download recovery files if I can't log into the computer at all?
Is there any way to re-image it?  I have the original sticker w/ serial numbers, etc.  The school techs kept the recovery disks, if there were any that came with them.
Thanks for any help you can offer to keep these computers useful for students?  Thanks.

You don't need to re-purchase Windows 7 as the Microsoft license is affixed to each of the computers... the HP Recovery Discs would re-install a pre-activated copy of Windows 7 Pro. Alternately, you should be able to order a USB Recovery Flash drive from HP to do the same thing without the need for an external USB CD/DVD drive.
Or you can just download the Windows 7 Pro 32-bit ISO from HERE and the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool  from HERE and create a Windows 7 Pro 32-bit USB Flash drive. You will need one blank USB Flash drive of 4GB or 8GB. You will need the use of a Windows computer to make this bootable Windows 7 Pro 32-bit USB Flash drive. Once Windows is installed your will enter the 25 digit product key from the bottom of each computer and activation it.
There is no need to use ABR unless your computers already have Windows 7 on them and you wish to save the OEM activation files. Since this isn't the case, ABR can be ignored.

  • I can't log in to my apple ID on my iphone 4s, I can on the computer, but it says an unknown error has occurred whenever I try to sign in to download any apps or anything. Help!

I got it today, second hand, set up an apple ID and can log in perfectly fine on the computer, but I can't log in on my iphone! Not sure what's wrong but I've tried logging in like 10 times and it says unknown error EVERY time.

        for the       Points.
I have not heard of anyone being charged for this at an Apple Store.
If it was through an Apple Authorised Service Provider  I am sure you will be able to convince them that they missed the end of the job.

  • My husband plugged in a password and we don't know what it is and cannot log onto the new computer.  How can I reset the password if I can't log on?

My husband was setting up the iMac he got us for Christmas.  I already have a MacBook Pro.  I do not know the sequence of events but I do know he wanted to use my iTunes account on the iMac so I provided passwords.  Now we cannot log onto the computer using any of my passwords.  He must have mistyped something.  How do we log onto the computer if we can't figure out what the password is?

If it's a new Mac I guess it's running Lion, if so, hopefully this'll help:

  • I was installing a new update on my MacBook Pro. With only 20% left it said "an unknown error had occured, please restart your computer." Now that I've restarted - I can't log in!

Ok, my MacBook haven't had any issues earlier, until today. At first Safari was acting kind of weird in that sense that a lot of letters were missing when you went on certain webpages, so I thought of updating since an alert-window popped up and notified that new updates were ready to be installed. So I opened up App Store through my Applications-folder and selected update.
First it asked if I wanted to connect my Mac to a powersource but since I had charged the battery to 79% I didn't think it was necessary. So I continued, computer restarted and began installing the updates.
Everything went fine until it was approximately three minutes left. An error message popped up and said something like "An unknown error has occured. Please restart your computer and try again". I pressed OK, rebooted my computer and when it asked for my password I typed it in. After I pressed OK, the computer indicated it was the wrong password. I tried multiple times and sometimes with different passwords... so now I can't simply log in! What's the problem?
TL;DR - Updated mac, failed after five minutes and now I can't log back in since "I have the wrong password"

  • Today I tried to shutdown my computer and a window popped up saying that my computer could not shut down because the mail application was open, it wouldn't close, so I used a key combination to force mail to quit and now I can't log in. Help?

Okay, so I have been having trouble with my mail application all week. The window refused to open and would not quit. Today, I tried to shut down my mac and a pop up window told me that I was unable to shutdown because mail was open. After using a key combination, I successfully was able to quit mail with force quit. Then I was able to shut down with out a problem. However, upon rebooting, my computer refused to let me loggin. I put in my password correctly but then the rainbow pinwheel showed up and stalled for a minute and then my screen flashed and the gray screen reappeared, expecting a password. I tried turning it off and back on again with no luck. I also reset my password after reading a similar discussion, but I still can't log in. How can I fix this?
