Can't login after 10.5.6 upgrade

Yesterday I upgraded my iMac 2 GHz to OS 10.5.6. It worked fine in the beginning, but today the Mac started to behave slow and strange (couldn't click on anything). I had to force quit. But then I couldn't login again. When the login window appears, I can't choose user or enter my password. If I force quit, the startup process comes to the same place, but not any further.

Try the troubleshooting steps here.

    Try this:
    Reset all Internet Explorer settings:

Open Internet Explorer. Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN settings. Make sure that the only option selected is “Automatically detect settings”.
    Clear all Temporary Internet Files.
Open Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Internet Options -> General. In the section “Browsing history” press the “Settings” button and in the next window the “View files” button. Delete all files from the Temporary Internet Files folder.

  • Can't login after Mountain Lion upgrade (Network accounts are unavailable)

I performed a Mountain Lion upgrade on a 2011 MBP running Lion this weekend. The Mac may have been set up to connect to an AD server with my user account, but I thought I had disabled that months ago... aparently not. I performed the upgrade at home not on the corporate network.
On first bootup after the Mountain Lion upgrade I'm stuck at the login screen unable to login with my local account or the admin account. I get the "red dot" next to the username field with the "Network accounts are unavailable" pop up. I'm plugged in to the ethernet network at work now... no luck.
I tried booting into the repair disk and repairing disk permissions. Still no luck.
Any ideas? I'd happily do a fresh install but I need to get a handful of files off the machine first.

No worries with the basic questions... it's important to cover all the bases. Thanks so much for the input.
    - I'm trying to log in with the same username I would use to ssh in... so yes.
    - I don't know if the account was a mobile account. The Mac was given to me configured about a year ago, configured to be on the domain. I since have used it on and off many networks without considering it was set up to be on a domain.
    - Never had a problem logging into the machine before the mountain lion install, although to be honest it was very very rarely ever rebooted.
    - I've plugged it into ethernet and let it sit for quite some time. It's still telling me Network accounts are unavailable and I'm unable to login with my personal or admin account.

  • Users can't login after upgrading to Server 4

I've upgraded my classroom server to OS X Yosemite 10.10 and Server.app to Server 4.  All of my client stations are running OS X Mavericks 10.9.5.  Users were unable to login.  I've then upgraded the entire lab to 10.10, that seems to have fixed the issue. Sort of.  2 of the client stations are still unable to login.  They are Mid 2010 Mac Minis, I have 4 of them with the same specs, yet 2 work fine and 2 don't.  The rest of the lab is also Mac Minis, all newer than the previous, all working fine.  Any suggestions as to why those 2 don't want to cooperate?

In server administration, under Open Directory was set to Open Directory Master. I changed it to Standalone Server which is what we have and that took care of everything.

  • Can't login after deleting a standard user on directory utility.

My laptop was rebooted in an apple service center, they made a user account for me to use. I backed up my old user with migration using time machine. I changed the administrator to my old user account and tried to delete the other user but it kept on returning. After searching on how to delete user, I found a tutorial that promted me to delete that account using the directory utility found in Systems/Library/CoreServices.
When I tried to log in again, my computer can't find the administrator user. The log in screen is empty and when I type the admin name and password, it would just load and nothing. On the password box, the little circle would just go round and round. Please help!

    Hi RHermann,
    I have some question.
Does the user use a network account for login and how many users are affected by this problem?
Did that happened with a local user account on the same PC, too?
Which OS is running on your PC? Windows 7 64 Bit?
Which server system do you use for the User server?
Do you get any problem reports if you login after uninstall DIAdem?
Can you tell me which HW you use? Dell HP …
I hope that information will make it possible to detect your problem. :-)

  • Can't login after installing Oracle 10g on XP Service Pack 1

Hi, I am completely new to using oracle and cannot login after completing the install process. I followed the article:
    http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/oracle/115320/3
in order to install and unlock the relevant accounts (such as "SCOTT"). But I keep getting the following error message when attempting to login (at both the "http://myservername/em" and "http://myservername/isqlplus" urls):
    ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
After a few of those errors I also get an understandable "account locked" error message.
Can anyone suggest fields for "username", "password" and "contact identifier" that might enable me to login?! And why can't I use the "Global Database Name" and password that I supplied during the installation process?
oh, and does it make a difference that I'm using "Parallels Desktop" to run windows from my mac?
Thanks very much for any help, because I really need to get this running quickly!

Open SQL*Plus ... all learning of Oracle should start at the SQL*Plus command line.
Assuming you are logged in to the operating system as the same user that installed the Oracle software on SQL*Plus in the Start -> Programs menu.
Under username type "/ as sysdba" without the double-quotes and leave the other two dialog box fields empty.
    Now enter:
    SQL> alter user scott account unlock identified by tiger;
SQL conn scott/tigerIf this works you need to proceed by getting a beginning Oracle book. The one's offered by Oracle Press are among the best for your level or preferably find a class personal mentor in your area.

But XP SP1? Why? SP2 is the minimum for a system with some level of security.
In the future always post a complete version number (3 decimal places) as well as, as you did, complete error messages. That will help you get good answers.

  • Can't login after it reset my pw?

so my macbook, which is all updated and stuff, does this wierd thing where if i set it to automatically logout or request the password at login, it will reset the password for me, and then i can't log back into my computer with my original password until someone force-changes it...unfortunately i can't find my friend who changed it for me last time, and i really want to use my computer again...
does anyone have any suggestions for me? ive tried to change it with passwd <username>, but my username has a space in it and it pops up as an error...
i got it to change a password, but it created a second admin account as well, and i'm really confused about that. on the list of users, my account still exists, but i can't login to it...and right now it isn't even letting me access the passwd thing, i'm kinda worried, please help me...
    thank you!

  • Can't login after software update

I did a routine software update that required a restart for one of the two items(admit to not knowing what two updates). Now I can only login in as "Test" - not my regular login name. The password is correct (no screen shake). I put in my password, the screen goes blue as if a successful login, then the original login screen reappears. Any suggestions or, better yet, solutions?
    8995W

it sounds like theres a login item preventing you from getting into your admin account. try holding down the shift key as you log into your account and continue holding it down until you see the dock. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh939.html
if you do get in using that you will need to go to system preferences from the blue apple, then into accounts. in there select login items and remove all the login items. that should resolve it.

  • Can't login after upgrade to 10.6.8

    Hi
I am stuck in a login loop after upgrading from 10.6.4 to 10.6.8, the Login window accepts the password, the screen clears and after a short delay the login window reappears.
    Some background info:
    this is a 2010 iMac 21.5"
I have replaced a failed drive with a new one, reinstalled 10.6.4 with the install disc that came with the Mac
Did a successful Time Machine restore where the computer would boot and desktop and files were all intact.
A couple of programs complained about the OS needing updating so I used the Update feature to download and install 10.6.8
Now I cannot get past the logon screen.
Any suggestions to get past this screen?
    thanks
    Bob

    Hi Eric
    Thanks for your continued help
I borrowed another 10.6.4 DVD and have now managed to install 10.6.4 and update it to 10.6.8 and no longer have the logon loop issue. I've also verified/repaired the disc and repaired the file permissions successfully.
Time Machine has restored the desktop, all the music files are there, Photo's are there and Google Picassa runs, but little else.
Safari complains I have the wrong version of OSX and will not run so I can't browse the net (typing this on my laptop)
iTunes reports it requires 10.7.5 or later as do most other apps I've tried.
Fortunately Finder works, I've run the Software Update and it says I have the latest updates.
If I click on 'App Store', the store opens ok but the only Upgrade option I now see is to Yosemite, if I select that the App Store screen gives a spinning pointer and never does anything, I have to force quit through finder to get out of it.
any suggestions as to what to try next?
    thanks
    Bob

  • Can't login after upgrade...

I've just updated a 24 inch iMac (Aluminium 2.8ghz 4GB RAM 1TB HD) from 10.4.10 to Leopard, and when I log in to the main account (the 501 admin account), the screen fades to blue and then login screen fades back up after a few seconds. It just won't let me log in!
I've tried the solutions here of booting up in single user mode and resetting the password and account privileges on that account in case it's lost it's admin rights. I've also tried logging in using the root account by setting it's password but the same thing happens when I login with that account. I've also tried repairing the permissions and the disk from the Leopard DVD to no joy.
The Tiger system was pretty clean having only had Final Cut Studio 2 and Movie Magic ScreenWriter installed on it. It had been used for about two weeks doing some light-weight FCP work.
+I did the following things before I upgraded to Leopard:+
    • Deleted an account (a second admin account)
    • Ran software update in Tiger
    • Install the iLife Support 8.1.1 update and the iMac Software Update 1.2 (Tiger)
    • Shutdown
    • Booted off the Leopard DVD and the update seemed to go fine.
I have a feeling that the iMac Software Update 1.2 (Tiger) broke things when I updated to Leopard as there seems to be a separate one for Leopard.
I think I'll probably reinstall the machine in case of any future issues, but has anyone else seen this issue before?
*A word of warning then* - don't run the iMac Software Update 1.2 (Tiger) update then upgrade to Leopard as you won't be able log in, _even as root!_

Hi Andrew - I'm having the exact same problem. Same computer tried the same fixes and getting the same blue screen that fades back to the login screen. The only exception is that I had no other programs installed - I pulled the computer straight out of the box and installed the Leopard update. I did however let Tiger run a software update for iLife and a few other things (I'm embarrassed to say that I didn’t pay enough attention to what was actually updated – too excited about moving on to Leopard I guess.) I was going to try and call tech support later today and will post back if I get a solution to this issue. Thanks for posting it, at least I know there is one other person out there with the same problem.

  • Can't login after upgrading to leapord

My accounts show up but when I click on one to enter my password I get the beach ball I've let it run for 20 minutes but the beach ball stays... Am I screwed?

I wanted to post as well so Apple can be assured there is a problem. I am also having the same password issues, after upgrading... only one "backup" non-admin account is accessible. I am positive I am typing everything correctly. Also, when I "log out" of this user, I get the blue screen and the "forever" beach ball as well.
Thanks goodness a friend of mine mentioned he was going to test the new system on his laptop first before installing on his main work computer. I decided to do the same. Good thing I did. I can only imagine the problems that are going to erupt after many people receive their upgrades today.
I am going to try the suggestions listed here - *thank you to those that posted* - even though some of the answers are making my head spin . I am beyond aggravated and disappointed that I am having such an issue and I haven't even gotten into using the new system. This is not the Apple I know and love.
    Aggravated...

  • Can't Login After Upgrading To Snow Leopard

I finally updated to Snow Leopard but have run into a problem I don't know how to resolve. After installation completed and my MacBook booted up it won't take my password. I know the password is right because I just used it to update the software before installing 10.6 and my password hint corresponds with it. What can I do?
    Thanks in advance!

Well, I thought it worked. When I booted from the disk and changed the password and then restarted it started up and did not ask me for the password but when I went to "About This Mac" it showed I was still running 10.5. I went through the 10.6 install again and got the same result. What can I do?

  • Can't login after upgrading to Leopard

There is a similar thread to this (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1264420), but after reading and attempting to fix it using the solution from Apple about logging into single user, I ran into some problems.
After step 6, the list of users are shown. Mine shows:
    .Ds_Store .localized Shared myusersname
Then after step 8, it says:
    delete: Invalid Path
    <dscl_cmd> DS Error: -14009 (eDSUnknownNodeName)
And after step 10, it tells me that the username shown from step 6 is an unknown username. That is strange since in the list of usernames, it shows that my username does exist. What is wrong? Thanks in advance.

Apparently, you're following the steps in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1543 If so, that's what you should have referenced.
If you got an invalid path message, then you mistyped the string:
    *dscl . -delete /Users/myusername AuthenticationAuthority*
IIRC, the error after step 10 results from not deleting it in step 8.
A hint. When posting problems, it's very beneficial if you post the command you used and the result. If my suspicion that you entered an incorrect item in step 8, that's what's causing your issue. Try again, ensuring that you write the commands and the results down for future postings.

  • Cannot Login after 10.4.11 Upgrade

I recently upgraded my G4 Quicksilver Power Mac from 10.3.9 to Tiger. The install DVD was for 10.4.6. The DVD installed fine, then I ran the system updater to get the remaining 10.4 updates. It updated Java no problem, then the Mac OS X Update Combined (PowerPC) came back with an error saying the digital signature is incorrect. I then went to the Apple Support Downloads site, and attempted to download an update with Safari. I tried the combos for 10.4.8 thru 10.4.11, and all of them failed verification after attempting to open the download. Very strange. So I went to my macbook, downloaded the 10.4.11 combo update ok, and put it on the G4 with a thumb drive. It opened the dmg file fine, I ran the update, and the system re-booted. At some point before the login screen, it hung up and I had to power it down. After restarting, it now gets to the login screen, and sits there until I move the mouse pointer into the login window. It then hangs there with the spinning beachball. I'm not able to login at all. Same problem when booting in Safe Mode. I've used the DVD to startup the system, and can access the HD using a terminal window. I ran the disk utility, and the HD is fine. I looked at the system.log and don't see anything there that I can identify as something I can fix. There is a segmentation fault at time 22:57:47. I'm including the log below, maybe someone can get something from it. I thought I'd try to re-install the 10.4.11 combo update, and haven't been able to mount the dmg file while running off the DVD. To do that I need to create a root directory on the HD, but it's read-only when running from the DVD. While in the hung login state, I cannot remotely login to the G4 using ssh from my macbook.
So at this point I'm stuck short of trying to re-install from the DVD using the option to archive the current OS before install (the installer recognizes that it is now at 10.4.11, and so it won't do a normal simple install again.) I'd really like to try to fix what is there or figure out how to re-run the 10.4.11 update, before doing the archive/install/10.4.11 update again. Don't want to do all that and end up in the same place.
I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas. Below are the system profile and the system.log. Sorry for the long post. Thanks!!

Safe boot mode runs a directory check command similar to that used by Disk Utility's repair. In Tiger it ignores some stored information (cache) that is normally read that speeds up the boot process, and it moves some other caches to the trash. It also uses only System fonts and disables all Startup Items, third party items, and any Login Items.
