Can't login after upgrading to Leopard

There is a similar thread to this (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1264420), but after reading and attempting to fix it using the solution from Apple about logging into single user, I ran into some problems.
After step 6, the list of users are shown. Mine shows:
.Ds_Store .localized Shared myusersname
Then after step 8, it says:
delete: Invalid Path
<dscl_cmd> DS Error: -14009 (eDSUnknownNodeName)
And after step 10, it tells me that the username shown from step 6 is an unknown username. That is strange since in the list of usernames, it shows that my username does exist. What is wrong? Thanks in advance.

Apparently, you're following the steps in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1543 If so, that's what you should have referenced.
If you got an invalid path message, then you mistyped the string:
*dscl . -delete /Users/myusername AuthenticationAuthority*
IIRC, the error after step 10 results from not deleting it in step 8.
A hint. When posting problems, it's very beneficial if you post the command you used and the result. If my suspicion that you entered an incorrect item in step 8, that's what's causing your issue. Try again, ensuring that you write the commands and the results down for future postings.

  • Can't printscreen after upgrade to Leopard ????

Hi everyone ! I have a problem after upgraded to Leopard and installed Vista Ultimate on my Macbook-pro 17in-2.4. I can't use printscreen key command. I don't know what's problem. Does anybody have the same this problem ? Please help me or share some information with me ! Thanks for your concerning.

I have the same problem after upgrading from boot camp beta 1.3 to boot camp 2.0 with Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard on a Macbook Pro 15 inch. I used to press fn-f11 or fn-option-f11 to capture either the screen or the current window. This has now apparently stopped working.

  • Can't login after upgrade...

I've just updated a 24 inch iMac (Aluminium 2.8ghz 4GB RAM 1TB HD) from 10.4.10 to Leopard, and when I log in to the main account (the 501 admin account), the screen fades to blue and then login screen fades back up after a few seconds. It just won't let me log in!
I've tried the solutions here of booting up in single user mode and resetting the password and account privileges on that account in case it's lost it's admin rights. I've also tried logging in using the root account by setting it's password but the same thing happens when I login with that account. I've also tried repairing the permissions and the disk from the Leopard DVD to no joy.
The Tiger system was pretty clean having only had Final Cut Studio 2 and Movie Magic ScreenWriter installed on it. It had been used for about two weeks doing some light-weight FCP work.
+I did the following things before I upgraded to Leopard:+
    • Deleted an account (a second admin account)
    • Ran software update in Tiger
    • Install the iLife Support 8.1.1 update and the iMac Software Update 1.2 (Tiger)
    • Shutdown
    • Booted off the Leopard DVD and the update seemed to go fine.
I have a feeling that the iMac Software Update 1.2 (Tiger) broke things when I updated to Leopard as there seems to be a separate one for Leopard.
I think I'll probably reinstall the machine in case of any future issues, but has anyone else seen this issue before?
*A word of warning then* - don't run the iMac Software Update 1.2 (Tiger) update then upgrade to Leopard as you won't be able log in, _even as root!_

Hi Andrew - I'm having the exact same problem. Same computer tried the same fixes and getting the same blue screen that fades back to the login screen. The only exception is that I had no other programs installed - I pulled the computer straight out of the box and installed the Leopard update. I did however let Tiger run a software update for iLife and a few other things (I'm embarrassed to say that I didn’t pay enough attention to what was actually updated – too excited about moving on to Leopard I guess.) I was going to try and call tech support later today and will post back if I get a solution to this issue. Thanks for posting it, at least I know there is one other person out there with the same problem.

  • Can't login after upgrade to 10.6.8

    Hi
I am stuck in a login loop after upgrading from 10.6.4 to 10.6.8, the Login window accepts the password, the screen clears and after a short delay the login window reappears.
    Some background info:
    this is a 2010 iMac 21.5"
I have replaced a failed drive with a new one, reinstalled 10.6.4 with the install disc that came with the Mac
Did a successful Time Machine restore where the computer would boot and desktop and files were all intact.
A couple of programs complained about the OS needing updating so I used the Update feature to download and install 10.6.8
Now I cannot get past the logon screen.
Any suggestions to get past this screen?
    thanks
    Bob

    Hi Eric
    Thanks for your continued help
I borrowed another 10.6.4 DVD and have now managed to install 10.6.4 and update it to 10.6.8 and no longer have the logon loop issue. I've also verified/repaired the disc and repaired the file permissions successfully.
Time Machine has restored the desktop, all the music files are there, Photo's are there and Google Picassa runs, but little else.
Safari complains I have the wrong version of OSX and will not run so I can't browse the net (typing this on my laptop)
iTunes reports it requires 10.7.5 or later as do most other apps I've tried.
Fortunately Finder works, I've run the Software Update and it says I have the latest updates.
If I click on 'App Store', the store opens ok but the only Upgrade option I now see is to Yosemite, if I select that the App Store screen gives a spinning pointer and never does anything, I have to force quit through finder to get out of it.
any suggestions as to what to try next?
    thanks
    Bob

  • Can't login after upgrading to leapord

My accounts show up but when I click on one to enter my password I get the beach ball I've let it run for 20 minutes but the beach ball stays... Am I screwed?

I wanted to post as well so Apple can be assured there is a problem. I am also having the same password issues, after upgrading... only one "backup" non-admin account is accessible. I am positive I am typing everything correctly. Also, when I "log out" of this user, I get the blue screen and the "forever" beach ball as well.
Thanks goodness a friend of mine mentioned he was going to test the new system on his laptop first before installing on his main work computer. I decided to do the same. Good thing I did. I can only imagine the problems that are going to erupt after many people receive their upgrades today.
I am going to try the suggestions listed here - *thank you to those that posted* - even though some of the answers are making my head spin . I am beyond aggravated and disappointed that I am having such an issue and I haven't even gotten into using the new system. This is not the Apple I know and love.

  • Can't Login After Upgrading To Snow Leopard

I finally updated to Snow Leopard but have run into a problem I don't know how to resolve. After installation completed and my MacBook booted up it won't take my password. I know the password is right because I just used it to update the software before installing 10.6 and my password hint corresponds with it. What can I do?
    Thanks in advance!

Well, I thought it worked. When I booted from the disk and changed the password and then restarted it started up and did not ask me for the password but when I went to "About This Mac" it showed I was still running 10.5. I went through the 10.6 install again and got the same result. What can I do?

  • Can not login after re-installing leopard

I had an error when running disk utilities and could not repair disk. I reloaded 10.5 and now can not log in. I did not have a password and it will not let me log in. I used the help topics from apple and went through the steps to reset users. When I typed in the launchct1 ... it stated that command not found. I am new to Apple and switched when VISTA came out. Can anyone have any suggestions?

If that is the case the last character of the command is the letter "l" not the number "1".

  • Users can't login after upgrading to Server 4

I've upgraded my classroom server to OS X Yosemite 10.10 and Server.app to Server 4.  All of my client stations are running OS X Mavericks 10.9.5.  Users were unable to login.  I've then upgraded the entire lab to 10.10, that seems to have fixed the issue. Sort of.  2 of the client stations are still unable to login.  They are Mid 2010 Mac Minis, I have 4 of them with the same specs, yet 2 work fine and 2 don't.  The rest of the lab is also Mac Minis, all newer than the previous, all working fine.  Any suggestions as to why those 2 don't want to cooperate?

In server administration, under Open Directory was set to Open Directory Master. I changed it to Standalone Server which is what we have and that took care of everything.

  • Stuck in a "loop" at the login window after upgrading to Leopard

I bought a new iMac Oct 26. It contained Tiger, and included a disk for installing Leopard. I easily got the machine up and running using Tiger, but last night I attempted to install Leopard. When the installation was complete, I tried to get it running. A screen asking for my password came up. I keyed that in and hit logon. Back came the screen asking for the password. To make long story short, I tried everything I could last night, and then called Apple Support this morning. Took quite a while, but I was back in business this afternoon. The technician who helped me sent me the email copied below describing the solution. Perhaps it will help someone else? Romelle
    Hello from Apple!

Mac OS X 10.5, iMac (Late 2007): Stuck in a "loop" at the login window after upgrading to Leopard
    Issue or symptom
After installing Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on a 20-inch or 24-inch iMac (Late 2007) computer, you may not be able to log in at the login window. Your login name and password are apparently accepted, but after a blue screen appears for a few seconds, the login window reappears instead of your desktop.
    Products affected
    20-inch or 24-inch iMac (Late 2007) computer with 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8 GHz processors
    Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
    Solution
    If Leopard is installed
Start up from the Leopard Install DVD and perform an Archive and Install installation (and select Preserve Users and Network Settings).
After the Archive and Install is complete, you should be able to successfully log in. Use Software Update to install any other updates.
Important: Install the iMac Software Update 1.3 for Leopard after the Archive and Install is complete.
If Leopard is not yet installed
If you have not yet installed Leopard on your 20-inch or 24-inch aluminum iMac computer with a 2.0, 2.4, or 2.8 GHz processor running Mac OS X 10.4.x, but previously installed the iMac Software Update 1.2, you should install the iMac Software Update 1.2.1 (Tiger) or later, before installing Leopard.
    Thank you,
    Apple

If Leopard came pre-installed and this is a new machne, then the disks that came in the box should let you archive install preserving users & network settings. The disks have a grey label, and if you get more than one use disk #1 for this procedure.
Hold down the "option" (also known as "alt" on the new keyboards) key when starting up with disk #1 in the optical drive. Select the install disk icon on the grey screen and click the arrow. Then when you get to the "select destination pane, click the options button after selecting your hard drive as the destination. In options A& I preserving should be checked by default, if not, select them. Click "ok" to dismiss the options pane, then run the installation.
If this does not work for you, call apple support. They want everything to work. Be patient, they are real busy these days.

  • Can't use Airport Express after upgrading to Leopard

I use Airport Express for wireless printing and AirTunes via powered speakers/hifi. It was working very reliably until I upgraded to Leopard. Now, I am unable to use Airport Express. I get the blinking orange light, but when I scan with Airport Utility, Airport Express is not detected. Manual setup is grayed out, so I can't set it up at all. I am using Airport Utility Version 5.2.2 (522.3), and there does not seem to be any updates or patches to apply at the moment. I have tried on my iMac G5 and MacBook, with the same result on both computers.
I am also reading that many others are having problems with Airport Express after upgrading to Leopard, perhaps not with my specific hardware configuration, but this is very disappointing.
I am open to suggestions to try a few things to get it working, so any help is appreciated.

From the Mail menu, select "Preferences". Hit the Accounts tab. Select the Account. Under Account Information, reapply the user name and password.
Check with the provider if the account needs authentication. This is in the Advanced tab. Usually just a repeat of user name and password.

  • Motion screen is completely black after upgrading to Leopard

    Hi,
I have opened IDVD for the first time after upgrading to Leopard and it does not work correctly anymore.
The motion screen is in black and does not show anything (while you can hear the sound of the theme selected)
This happens with already created projects and new projects
    All since upgraded to Leopard
It is possible to see a movie in an already created project, if you are able to go through the menuscreens and select the movie without actually seeing anything. Than the movie is shown correctly.
I work with the latest version of Leopard and IDVD, all on a macbook
    Hope you can help !!
    Thanks a lot

  • Bluetooth Mighty Mouse keeps freezing after upgrading to Leopard

My bluetooth mighty mouse has frequent, intermittent freezes (which appear to be a loss of sync to the iMac) after upgrading to Leopard (now 10.5.1) from 10.4.11 on my iMac 24" alum body. This mouse was rock solid on my iMac running Tiger. Luckily I do have a corded mouse which I've been forced to use the past week or so.
    Can anyone suggest anything?
    Thanks.

I was just trying to help my Dad with the same exact issue (Mighty Mouse stops working on waking from sleep & trying to open bluetooth prefs at that point causes the system to lock up. Have to hold down power button to reboot)
Oddly I have Leopard on my iMac 2.16 Core 2 Duo and have no issues with my Mighty Mouse.
Hopefully someone comes up with an answer .... My Dad is 80 and just bought a new Powerbook and Mighty Mouse. It's hard to explain why the mouse doesn't work.

  • Final Cut Studio license invalid after upgrading to Leopard?

    Hello,
After upgrading to Leopard 10.5.1, Final Cut Studio v5.1.4 and its companion apps like DVD Studio 4 do not recognize my FC Studio License as valid. I input the license key and it says:
    "Licensing Error
This application cannot continue because the licensing data is corrupt."
I am a licensed user via the FC Studio Crossgrade since 2006 and all has been fine with Tiger before Leopard.
I have used Disk Utility to "repair permissions". I have removed the FC files from the Preferences folder to give it a clean start.
    PERHAPS A HINT?:
So I tried to re-install FC Studio 5.1 from the FC Install DVD and I get this message after inputting the key:
    "Alert
Licensing Error: The license file will not be written to disk because the user does not have enough privileges."
I have Administrator privileges on this account and I even tried to install it as 'root' and the same error occurs.
Is there a file that I need to change permissions on?
THANKS for any help here! And happy holidays.
    Bonafide

    Hi,
Unfortunately there is also an issue with installing FCS2 on a brand new installation with Leopard and this licensing error.
"Alert Licensing Error: The license file will not be written to disk because the user does not have enough privileges."
This also occurs, apparently, that if you are logged in with an Active Directory user with Admin privileges it still will not let you install the product keys.
This is much the same as a problem with Adobe CS3 products, only the updates work when you are logged in with a local admin - not an Active Directory Admin.
Both these problems are really really annoying for those on corporate networks - such as myself.
For my problem, I had to log out as my AD account, login as a local admin and then install the software. .

  • Keyboard issues after upgrading to Leopard

Seems there's been quite a bit of discussion about this topic already but it's been confined to laptops and I haven't seen a solution yet. I'm seeing the same problems on a desktop computer using either a wireless or USB keyboard.
After upgrading to Leopard, my keyboard would occasionally stop responding to keystrokes. I have seen this happen on both an Apple USB keyboard and my Logitech wireless keyboard. With either keyboard, the letter and number keys would stop responding but keys like the CapsLock and Delete keys would still work. I have seen this happen when using Mac Office 2004 (Excel and Word) and Safari. With Excel, when the keyboard stops responding, if I click on a different cell, the keyboard comes back. I did update to 10.5.2 and I do have the latest version of the Logitech software but the problems still persist.
Strangely, I have only seen this happen on my MacPro but NOT my MacBook. There is a difference on how each machine was upgraded to Leopard though. On my MacBook, I did a clean install of Leopard on a new hard drive and then migrated my docs and apps from the old drive. On my Mac Pro, I did an upgrade installation over Tiger. Fortunately, I cloned my hard drive prior to installing Leopard so going back is an option and so is doing a clean install followed by a migration which is what I did on my MacBook.
Is there a fix for the keyboard problems? Am I going to have to downgrade back to Tiger?

Thanks for posting this. I thought I was alone in the universe. I have the problem with my mini, which came with Leopard installed. The USB keyboard will stop working in Word or Entourage ('04) and I have to close and reopen the document to get the keyboard going again. Thankfully, my mouse still works when this happens, so I can use it to close and save.
It seems to sometimes be triggered when I switch between applications, but I haven't been able to replicate it consistently. It is particularly bad when using find in Word. The find window will go dead and I have to close it and reopen it to do another search. (Though interestingly, I don't have to close the Word doc.)
    It's irritating.
