However impossible to login at first startup, I got the multicolour spinning ball for ever and stuck....: I tried every trick found on web, did a beautiful clean install and then....as soon as I power off-on, on the login screen, whatever guest or my user account I got the death spinning ball. I let it stand overnight.... no results. crazy!!! I do have a backup, so the clean install, then same problem!!!! anyone??

Yosemite crash / spinning ball
Hello everyone
I update my MacBrook Pro to Yosemite from Mavericks friday morning. The first problems occurred friday night. The next day I reinstalled Yosemite, resetted PRAM, SMC etc.
I got the book spinning well, but it would always crash if I plugged it into power (MagSafe). Today I did a clean install, by wiping the entire drive and reinstalling Yosemite. The book ran good and faster than ever for about a hour, when the problem came back. (With MagSafe in it)
Now I'm completely lost and thats why Im here.
Heres a little log (booted into safemode, otherwise this would be impossible)
Best Regards,
Kristoffer

If you have the exactly same problems like me. My problems were that when I connected the charger to the computer the computer crashes instantly. Ive found out that file vault only encrypts when connected to power. I formatted the entire drive again and installed Yosemite but without filevault
Hope it helps -
Spinning ball of death...help if anyone can please
Hi there,
I'm have a Aluminium Unibody Macbook running 10.6.2., bootcamp installed running Windows 7. I am having major issues which I think are flash related. When did they start, funny enough just after Steve had a run in with Adobe at the launch on the iPad over Flash!
When using any app, but mainly a browser, be it Safari or Firefox I am, within minutes, faced with the spinning ball of death. This also impacts on my Bootcamp partition in that it needs chkdsk to run for over an hour to fix things before booting into W7.
I have removed and reloaded flash, reinstalled the combo 10.6.2 update even tried it in a test user account with the same issues. the spinning ball. With Flash removed all seems to be fine.
I'm thinking I now need to reinstall SL complete on a clean formatted drive or even purchase a new drive.... BUT before I do so does anyone have any ideas as to what the issues could be or where at least I should/could start to look..
Thanks in advance.Of 285GB I have 99GB showing as free...I'm not 100% convinced it's a HDD issue rather than a screwed up installation. but by what......guess I'll never know...
Does anyone know of a crash proof app I can run that tells me what is making the spinning ball appear..... now that WOULD really help.. -
Mac suddenly slow, overheating, spinning ball of death, hard to reboot.
Problem description:
Mac suddenly slowed down, especially when using Safari - spinning ball of death, pages won’t load, etc. Hard drive appeared to get “stuck” causing overheating and had trouble even shutting down with the button, and then wouldn’t reboot for about an hour.

Mar 17, 2015, 12:07:54 PM /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/cfprefsd_2015-03-17-120754_[redacted].crashSeems to have worked.
We hooked up the external HD, turned on Time Machine, and everything backed up.
Then we ran Disk Utility. The disk repair required the reboot thing and took two tries. Then repaired permissions. Also updated Flash.
Seems to be running okay now, but we have ordered a new SSD (as well as a new iMac 5k ). We use multiple computers so hoping we can get a couple more years of use out of this old computer as it ran fast and fine until this problem.
Thank you so much for your help! We really appreciate it. -
Help --- Finder Spinning Ball of Death Mavericks not starting
get the spinning ball of death when I select finder from the desktop or select anything for that matter.
I have tried reinstalling Mavericks, after the install I get a popup asking me to install java, regardless of the option I select either not now or install the SPOD comes up.
I then go into safe mode and downloaded java and installed it, then rebooted normal mode, same problem SPOD when you select anything.
I have created another account and that works fine, but not my normal account. Initially I thought it might be something to do with chrome, so I uninstalled that.
In addition I have removed any startup items I had against the user ID in system preferences. I have also switched off spotlight trying to build indexes.
I know my system is ok when I get the adobe update icon on my top menu bar. The boot up process simply doesn’t get to that stage.
Below is the boot log. I would be really grateful for any suggestions. I have tried installing from the app store 3 times now.

MayThe startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault. Everything else is completely irrelevant.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

MBP retina + Yosemite + MAGSAFE CONNECTED = freeze and spinning ball!!
I'm really losing my mind...
Friday I finally installed Yosemite 10.10 on my mbp retina. At the beginning everything was perfect, then new updates like iphoto and imovie started to pop up so I decided to download them. At some point of the download the spinning ball appeared but didn't want to go away, even after 5 minutes. I couldn't use my macbook so I decided to force shut down.
After restarting I could log in, but as soon as I moved the cursor to the dock and clicked on the apps I needed to open (Mail and Chorme) everything froze and the spinning ball appeared again.
Force shut down again.
The magsafe was connected at all time.
Then I decided to go to the Apple Store to solve the problem. Once I explained the problem to the guy and turned on the macbook in front of him, everything started to work again perfectly.
I looked like a freaking idiot.
He had no explanation, he just told me to use time machine to backup my data and bring the macbook there in case the issue would appear again.
Yes I tried all the possible procedures pressing the keys when the macbook is turned on. (I kept for last the pram reset and smc reset)
Nothing.
Then this morning I realized the freezing at startup would occur only if the magsafe was connected!!! This is also why at the Apple store there was no problem at startup....no magsafe connected. I tried a few times to use the macbook normally with the battery (even now that I'm writing), and it's working perfectly!! But as soon as I connect the magsafe, go to the dock to open apps or simply click on the google chrome tabs to type in a website, everything starts to freeze again and the spinning ball stays there indefinitely.
I also tried the utility disc (in normal and safe mode). It says everything is ok.
I even tried to delete completely iphoto, imovie and caffeine and to reinstall Yosemite.
I don't want to go to the Apple Store now because it's full of people (iphone 6 just got released here in China).
Could someone help me understand what is the problem??
Thank you for all the help you can provideYesterday it started to do the same even with the battery! So it was impossible for me to use it. I went to the apple store...they didn't know what to tell me since the system just got released.
They ran a few tests on my macbook and it showed that it wasn't an hardware issue, it was the software. So they wanted to do a backup of my data (from one of their macbooks) but couldn't because somehow there was a password for Firevault. I never put it!! And it's not the same I always choose for my system.
Result? They had to erase everything (I'm angry because I lost a lot of my work files) and now I'm back to Mavericks 10.9.5 and I have no idea when I'll decide to update again to Yosemite.
Since Steve Jobs passed away Apple is not the same.
My girlfriend has an iphone 5, she installed IOS 8 and everything is slow as ****. Seriously.
It's really disappointing and I (we) don't trust Apple anymore. -
MacBook Pro 13 and the Spinning Ball of Death. How to fix it?
I bought my macbook pro last year and after several months, (summer 2010) i faced an isight problem. I went to info-quest, where they fix computers here in Athens,Greece and charged me 458 euros. Fortunately, I had the warranty and paid nothing. Till then I was really satisfied with my mac. However, recently i faced another problem with it. Yesterday, my mac became so slow and i get the spinning ball of death. I can't do anything right now, for instance, if i want to shut it down, i have to wait for a long period of time til it shuts down and my mac becomes so unresponsive. To sum up, everything i do, scroll down, scroll up, click the x button, the spinning beachball of death reappears. I really hope there is a solution for this problem.
Any number of things may factor into the appearance of a spinning ball of death, but it basically comes down to an operation or command that is stalled.
First, your quick fix: when you experience a SBOD, click on an empty patch of screen so you can access the pulldown Apple menu. Scroll down to Force Quit; approve of the Force quit, and enter. The command or operation will be aborted, and you'll be able to use your MBP again.
Second, the next time it happens, take note of which application is stalled when you navigate to Force Quit. It will be noted in red, and show as inactive. Now, you know which application is causing you the problem. It may be that the application is faulty, or you have too many windows open at the same time, or there's a conflict of some sort.
Respond to this post so we can fix this once and for all! -
Spinning ball of death after latest security update
Help;
I have an IMac (late 2009) , 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo , 8GiB 1067 MHz, OSX Yosemite 10.10.1
After installing the latest security update my computer is very slow. I am having the spinning ball with iPhoto, Mail, Safari, Firefox, Chrome. Before I rebuild my mailbox, can someone tell me if this is a known problem with the update?
Thanks, Merry ChristmasRestart the computer and also use Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility) to Repair Disk Permissions and Verify the HD. Then retest the system.

Tried to load Mountain lion by means of disc---Didnt have original disc for this macbook; inherited it from deceased family member 2 yrs ago--- but couldn't get past SBOD there either. I am willing to erase all on mac book in order to get it up and running again since all my vital files are in my Mac (desktop) and primary use of macbook tends to be internet use.You could try installing Snow Leopard on the Macbook. Installation DVD is available from Apple:

Are you sure the MB meets the requirements for Mountain Lion?

IDVD Freezes / Spinning Ball of Death
So my iDVD (v5) was pretty much freezing and giving me the spinning ball of death everytime I tried to either create a new project or open an old one. Therefore... my solution was to go out and purchase iLife 6 (w/ the new iDVD 6) thinking would solve the problem. That was not the case.
Pretty much after opening iDVD and selecting; "new project"... the program loads the themes and then displays the main iDVD window... but then spins the ball and does not stop. I am forced to "force quit".
I looked on the Discussion boards and attempted several fixes...
- erasing the iDVD themes and reinstalling
- deleted iLife and reinstalling
- creating a new user account
- using Disk Utl to repair permissions
- finally erasing the plist preferences.
None of these solutions worked. All my other iLife and Final Cut Pro Studio applications work just fine (including DVD Studio Pro - which is my work around right now).
My final solution may be to reisntall TIGER... but I really don't want to do that. Any thoughts would be appreciated!!!!!!
This issue is similiar to the following posting... but those solutions did not work:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1901849#1901849Have you tried cleaning out the system caches using OnyX? You can download it at: http://macapple.free.fr/forum/index.php. I have had the same problems. I was trying to use Memorex 16x media. I followed all the suggestions (closing all applications, especially the browser, deleting the iDVD plist file, running Onyx, and repairing permissions, plus switching to 8x media). I have had consistent success since.
I use an external firewire LaCie d2 burner which has a NEC 3500A. But I am still using iDVD 5. I hope this will help.

Power went out and now spinning ball of death
This morning the power went out while I had been working in InDesign and Illustrator. I came in and saved the project before the back up power went out but did not get the Mac powered off completely before the back up stopped. When the power came back on, I restarted the mac and Indesign, and my project is now constantly getting the spinning ball of death; I can't even recover it anymore in Indesign (I can open the file, but the recovery was lost). ALL other programs are fine. Just indesign.
I went to look for help online and found a recommendation to turn everything off, unplug mac, let it rest then hold the power button down and replug the power then power the mac back on, and now my fan is running at super high speed and I still am having huge problems with InDesign. 1) can you tell me how to get the fan back to the way it was and 2) what do I do about spinny rainbow ball in Indesign.
HELP!!!!!Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
For the fans issue, first reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 If it doesn't work, it's possible that the computer has a hardware problem.
Apart from that, it's possible that your hard disk got damaged because of the power outage. To check if it's OK, open Disk Utility (it's in /Applications/Utilities), choose "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar and verify the disk. If it shows a problem, start in OS X Recovery (hold Command and R keys while your computer is starting), open Disk Utility and repair the Macintosh HD partition. If it couldn't be repaired, the hard disk has to be replaced -

i hate to drive on Unix code. Apple expect to make that easily friendly use .
The Simple Apple way would be to do an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
Then perhaps reinstalling other APPs if needed. -
Recovery with InDesign6 and spinning ball of death
This morning the power went out while I had been working in InDesign and Illustrator.
I came in and saved the project before the back up power went out but did not get the Mac powered off completely before the back up power stopped. When the power came back on, I restarted the mac and Indesign, and my project is now constantly getting the spinning ball of death; I can't even open the file even though it says it was saved. ALL other programs are fine. Just problems with indesign.
I have reset the SMC and did a disc check on the hard drive and the disc utility said everything was fine.
PLEASE HELP! I am freaking out about my project!!
Thanks.No. Placing pages will not help.
Try exporting a file that will open to .idml (see Remove minor corruption by exporting). I suspect, though that tehre may be program damage from the crash. Have you verified that you can create a new file and add pages?
If the .idml doesn't work, the next thing to try, if the new file is editable, is to creat a new file the same size as the one with a problem, then rename Master A to something you are not using in the problem file. Open the Paragraph Styles panel and from the flyout menu choose Load Paragraph Styles and choose the problem file as the source. Import the Basic Paragraph style and tell ID to use the incoming style.
Next, go back to the problem file and select all the pages in the Pages panel and opent the panel flyout menu. Choose Move Pages... and for the target pick your new file. Put the pages BEFORE page 1 so they don't switch sides.
In the new file, delet the last page which is now an extra, and see how it works. -
Spinning ball of death when I try to reconnect folders
Any time I try and reconnect a folder, whether via 'right-clicking' on my Macbook Pro or using drop downs to 'locate missing folder', I get the spinning ball of death. Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, do you know how I can fix it?
Elaine, how much ram is installed in your Mac? Click the Apple icon at the upper left and choose About this Mac to find out. When you look at Activity Monitor the thing you want to focus on Is the page ins and page outs at the bottom ofthe AM window, if those numbers are high, and I suspect that they will be it's an indication that your Mac is using all of it's available ram. Most of the time adding more ram is a cure for the beach all, I have 12gb in my iMac and have zero page outs almost all of the time.
