Can't login to Mac OS X Server (10.3.x)

We have a server that will not display the login screen. It loads all of the services (and they are working) ie: AFP, FTP and WWW but we can't login it never displays the screen. We have tried to repair perm. and checked the drive. We tried to re-install the OS from disk and it wants to reformat the HD. We also have a Macintosh OS X Server 10.4 that we tried to load and it wants to reformat the HD before install also. We have started to copy the files off of the server and are planning on formatting the HD and loading 10.4 Server from disk. Any suggestions as to what may have caused the problem would be appreciated. We don't need this problem again.

Solved it by deleting the user and creating a new one with the same userID.
Maybe it occured because I marked the "user has to change password after first login" box when resetting the password but didn't yet allow him to do so in the webpages menu?!?

  • Can't login to Mac OS X server website after password reset

    Hi,
I set up Mac OS X server for our small company and tried resetting the password of my network account that is managed via profile manager.
So, under Accounts->User->MYUSERNAME->reset Password, I typed in a new one and hit ok.
Now I can't login to the server website anymore (for editing our wiki or using profile manager etc.), neither with the new one nor with the old one.
I already tried different passwords (resetting it again and again), I looked at the password directive, I checked my user name, tried to login from different computers and tried logging in with another account (which worked quite fine, so it's just my account). Finally I searched the internet for a solution for quite some time but didn't find anything similar.
It would be great, if somebody could offer some advice.
    Best regards.
    Lasse

  • Can't login to Mac App store on mac mini. Is it because my ethernet port is fried?

    Hi
like many others, I am unable to log in to the mac app store on my mac mini.  I get the error message saying "An unknown error has occured". I believe the ethernet port is damaged after an electrical storm, but I can still get online wirelessly.  I've read on these forums that the app store verifys the account using the ethernet port.  Can anybody confirm if this is the case, is there a workaround that anyone knows of?
I can log into the App store on my laptop fine, just not the mac mini.
    Thanks in advance
    Paul

This is happening on 2 of my machines.  One is OSX Lion, the other OSX Mountain Lion.  My personal rig works just fine - all on the same network, all with the same basic configuration.  All can log in and out of iTunes, but the two servers can't login via Appstore. My rig and one of the servers even use the same Ethernet driver, so it's not that.
I would seriously doubt your Ethernet card would be working at all if it was indeed damaged by the lightning.  The transducers are relatively sensitive, and it would either fry or not.  You won't get "intermittent" operation as you have described.  Here is a list of all the things I've tried (based on a number of forum suggestions), none of which has worked:
    1) Sign out of itunes, sign back in, try to sign in to AppStore.
    2) Re-enter information in  your account info and save it again (knew that wasn't it but tried anyway).
    3) Ran AppStore as root.
    4) Using EFIStudio, I got the hex string ID of my ethernet card and specifically reference "device-properties" in the boot.plist.  Others  have said this works, so you might give it a try -
    http://legacy.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=169&t=28477
    5) Deleted all other ethernet devices to avoid "confusion" of the return.
    6) Verified I can get HTTPS returned from NAT device.
    7) Used Wireshark to get a packet capture of it working on mine and not working on the other.  On the one that doesn't work, all I get is a couple of SYNs to the appstore and then nothing.  It was along these lines that I was hoping the "device-properties" would work.
I just thought of something though.  If I don't see that ACK at all, it might be sending the packets somewhere else.  hmmm.  I'm going to hard-code in all HTTPS to be routed to that box and try it just for S&G.
    Good luck!

  • Can I upgrade from Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 to Lion?

I am currenty running a Mac mini with Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 and would like to upgrade to plain Lion OS X, can I do this or will their be problems going from a server OS to the normal OS?

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, click on More Info, and check the model identifier against the following, which are the earliest Macs of each type that can run Mountain Lion:
    iMac7,1
    MacBook5,1
    MacBookPro3,1
    MacBookAir2,1
    Macmini3,1
    MacPro3,1
    Xserve3,1
If your system's compatible, buy it from the Mac App Store. A computer incapable of running Mountain Lion which has a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) or better CPU and at least 2GB of RAM can run Lion 10.7, which is available by phoning the online Apple Store and ordering a download code for it.

  • Can't login to Mac Pro after every restart

    Hi all,
For 5 days I've not been able to log into my computer at work after its been restarted/gone to sleep. The IT guys have had to do all kinds of stuff to get it working again. And every time we think it's fixed, I've come in the next morning and have the same problem, can't login.
I've eliminated that its my login details as I was able to login on another machine just fine. And others can't login  to my computer, so it's obviously an issue with my machine/OS.
Does anyone have any ideas of why this would keep happening? It's as if something keeps resetting after each restart that then won't allow anyone else to login. This is all I can think of, but honestly have no idea. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated as its really frustrating and putting me very behind on my work. Thank you!
Btw, it's a Mac Pro duel quad core, 16GB ram, OS 10.6.7 I believe.
Also, the admin and root can login, just not any other accounts. So the computer can be accessed, but not thru my or any other accounts on the network.

    Hey there.
Well, I figured out what is causing my problem. It's Mobile accounts. I started fresh with a new install and a standard Active Directory account (not Mobile). I authenticated 20+ times. Rebooted at least 10 times. Everything worked great. Then I decided to create the Mobile account. That's when everything broke again. My Active Directory account was getting locked after one accurate attempt to authenticate. When IT unlocked it I could go one step further but then would lock me out the next time I tried to authenticate. I've replicated this twice.
So for me, it's clearly a Mobile account problem. Which is bad because half of the Macs under my care are notebooks.
Please let me know what you find out on your end.
    Thanks,
    Adam

  • I have iCloud on my iPhone but can't login on PC because of server error.

Not sure what I could be doing wrong but I just installed the software on my machine and restarted computer and can't login due to server error.  I click on check status and everything appears to be green on the site.
What am I doing wrong?  Other than not being able to convince my work to use Android devices.
    Guin

You might try doing the following:
Start an elevated command prompt (Start Menu>All Programs>Accessories>right-click "Command Prompt">choose "Run as Administrator").
Once in the command prompt, type "netsh winsock reset" (without the quotes) and press ENTER.
    Reboot your computer.
Then try siging into iCloud again.

  • Can't login to solaris 8 ftp server

I can't login to my solaris 8 ftp server from another computer. When I type in the username (root) and my password (the password I use to login to my CDE), it tells me that the password is incorrect. I am a beginner at this, and any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thankyou.

    Hi,
If you must log into the ftp server as root for some reason you have to first edit the ftpusers file. This file lists all the users who can not use ftp. The file is found here /etc/ftpusers. If you remove the entry root from this file it will allow root to log into the ftp server.
    Hope This Helps.

  • Can't login to Mac X server after an unexpected CPU reboot

    I'm using Mac X server 10.4.10.
Here is an interesting situation....after an unexpected system reboot, I was not able to login. This happened 2 twice. The first time, I was able to boot from another drive which was a clone of the drive with the difficulty, I went in to the passwd file located on the drive with the difficulty and enabled the root user, and after doing a startup on the drive with the difficulty, I was able to use the root ID to login. After doing so, I was able to reset the passwords normally used, and they worked going forward.
Some time later, the unexpected reboot occured again. I tried the above method to regain acess and it did not work. So now, I'm wondering what is part of a normal shut down process that is needed to be in place in order for the next login to work.
I ran all the built in disk maint routines but that did not help. I can boot from another drive and have full access to the data, I can also do a restore and over write the OS info with a baseline functional install, but I am wondering if there is another short cut way of resolving this. I'm thinking that there is an encrpyted file that gets out of sync if a proper shut down is not done resulting in an normal login process from happening. I'm not using keychains and do not have any speacial features enabled as well as just running bare bone defualt configs.
This is not the ned of the world...I can redue the install pretty easy and still have access to the data...just wondering if anyone has a short cut process to fix this.

"I would try booting from the cd and resetting the password of a local acount. This will at least allow you to log in. You might want to look into why the server is rebooting though as that seems to be the real problem. "
booting from the install cd...easy......resetting local account...interesting ....how would that be done?

  • Can't connect to Mac Mini (ML Server)

I have a Mid-2009 Mac mini that's running the latest Mac OS X 10.8 Server. It's connected to my TV via HDMI.
For a long time, I had no issues connecting to it via Screen Sharing, SSH or AFP but recently all three will mysteriously fail. I know the machine is working because I stream iTunes content to my Apple TV and it's hosting a couple of web sites that it serves up just fine. The only attached peripheral is a Drobo S (2nd Gen) attached via FW 800. Drobo Dashboard and the firmware are completely up-to-date.
When it stops working, I have no alternative but to A) wait until I get home and B) force the machine off and reboot it. After a reboot, Screen Sharing, AFP and SSH all work fine for a while. It seems to conveniently fail when I'm away and need to get to it.
Note that it fails on all three protocols from outside AND inside. So this isn't a network routing or port forwarding issue. I'm a Mac IT professional with 15 years under my belt, so I think I know what I'm doing in that regard. Like I said it's worked fine for years and it's only been lately that these failures have been happening.
I can't seem to identify any rhyme or reason for this. It's a fairly clean installation with almost no 3rd party software installed on it.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

"Screen Sharing is currently being controlled by the Remote Management Service"
I've been fidgeting between the Server.app server Settings tab and the Screen Sharing checkbox in System Preferences Sharing pane all day.
I had tried "Share Screen" via Finder. After I tried "Share Screen" via Server.app from my client computer I noticed the above warning message when Screen Sharing in the server's System Preference Sharing pane was highlighted. I'm not sure which is cause or effect.
Everything is checked on the server "Settings" tab in Server.app on the server. Only "FIle Sharing," "Remote Login" and "Remote Management" are checked on the Sharing pane in System Preferences on the server.
Everything is checked on the server "Settings" tab in Server.app on the client. In this case, "Allow remote administration using Server" is checked and grayed out. "Screen Sharing" is checked on the Sharing pane in System Preferences on the client. (It may not have anything to do with a successful screen share connection, but it is on.)
Everything is now working better than expected. Thanks to you both for your help!

  • Login on Mac os x server PDC from w2k terminal server

    Hi.
I have just try to config some server for my network without solution and now I have set up my xserver with OD as PDC with windows service. On wy network I have a w2k terminal server with Active Diretory. Now that I have pdc on mac I want to ask you if I can shut down active diretcory and what can I do to login terminal server client to Open Directory? what musat I configure in w2k? I want to leave terminal server service running. Is there someone who has already done so? thanks

From what I understand, this will enable users logging in with lower powered equipment to take advantage of the processing power of the Mac Pro.
I'm not really sure what that means, but it's true only if they log in remotely via Screen Sharing, and you don't need OS X Server for that.
I'll be able to login via Ethernet when traveling and use applications that exists on the Mac pro as well as share files.
That's true, but again, you don't need Server for it.
Does that mean that any Mac or PC logging into my Mac Pro as a client will effectively be a dumb terminal?
In a sense, if you're thinking of Screen Sharing.
Will PC/Windows users see the Mac OS X operating system on their laptops when they do this?
    Yes.
