  • Can't login to Mac Pro after every restart

    Hi all,
For 5 days I've not been able to log into my computer at work after its been restarted/gone to sleep. The IT guys have had to do all kinds of stuff to get it working again. And every time we think it's fixed, I've come in the next morning and have the same problem, can't login.
I've eliminated that its my login details as I was able to login on another machine just fine. And others can't login  to my computer, so it's obviously an issue with my machine/OS.
Does anyone have any ideas of why this would keep happening? It's as if something keeps resetting after each restart that then won't allow anyone else to login. This is all I can think of, but honestly have no idea. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated as its really frustrating and putting me very behind on my work. Thank you!
Btw, it's a Mac Pro duel quad core, 16GB ram, OS 10.6.7 I believe.
Also, the admin and root can login, just not any other accounts. So the computer can be accessed, but not thru my or any other accounts on the network.

    Hey there.
Well, I figured out what is causing my problem. It's Mobile accounts. I started fresh with a new install and a standard Active Directory account (not Mobile). I authenticated 20+ times. Rebooted at least 10 times. Everything worked great. Then I decided to create the Mobile account. That's when everything broke again. My Active Directory account was getting locked after one accurate attempt to authenticate. When IT unlocked it I could go one step further but then would lock me out the next time I tried to authenticate. I've replicated this twice.
So for me, it's clearly a Mobile account problem. Which is bad because half of the Macs under my care are notebooks.
Please let me know what you find out on your end.
    Thanks,
    Adam

  • How can I upgrade my Mac Pro

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro. Here are the specs :
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    MacPro1,1
    NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
When OS 10.6 came out, I found out that I couldn't upgrade to it because of my graphic card. In the technical specifications it is mentioned that :
    OpenCL
requires one of the following graphics cards or graphics processors:
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 9600M GT, GeForce 8600M GT, GeForce GT 120, GeForce GT 130, GeForce GTX 285, GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce 8800 GS, Quadro FX 4800, Quadro FX5600
    ATI Radeon 4850, Radeon 4870
Now, OS 10.5.8 is becoming more and more outdated. I would like to know how can I upgrade my Mac Pro ? What kind of graphic card can I put in ?
Thank you for any help and/or information !

It's been a while since I've used it but I installed Snow Leopard on my old Mac Pro 1,1 with the 7300GT and it worked. OpenCL may not have but the rest of it did. I don't think what you've quoted says you can't upgrade but only that an upgrade won't deliver all of the features in Snow Leopard. Indeed, I was able to move the HD in the 1,1 Mac Pro into the 5,1 Mac Pro, boot from it (10.6.4 is the minimum the 2010 Mac Pro will boot with), clone it and then updated it.

Im wondering what is the most GB of hard drive space I can have in my Mac Pro?  The Apple representative on the phone said I could only do 8GB?  Is this correct?  I was thinking about maybe getting 3Tb internal hard drives, but that would exceed the limit apple representative said of a total of 8GB hard drive max?
    Did I miss something?

    Did I miss something?
Yes, what does "GB" refer to here?  Is it hard drives or memory dimms?
If it's hard drives you can put any size SATA drive in your mac pro drive bays.
If it's memory dimms refer to OWC's charts for your model to see what you can add.  So for a 5,1 (2010 Mac Pro) you could fill the slots with 8GB dimms.

Well, there are tricks in the Internet to install OS X Mavericks in that computer based on the use of emulators (because you cannot run OS X Mavericks due to your Mac firmware). However, they are risky and illegal, and we cannot provide support for them.
Instead, you can only upgrade your Mac Pro to OS X Lion officially > http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion

    No.
The entire enclosure is tuned for both external jack placement, EMI-RFI radiation, airflow, and for cooling. You need exactly the correct shell and fans for the electronics you wish to install in it.

  • Can you boot a Mac Pro using a USB Pen Drive?

    Hello.
Can you boot a Mac Pro using a USB Pen Drive? OS=Windows or Linux or BSD or MacOS... I know it is bios specific on a PC if the option is available. If this is possible, does anyone have a link to instructions?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Not to get in to an argument over semantics here, but by saying "Windows should boot if you have installed the requisite Boot Camp drivers," you are implying "that the Boot Camp drivers [are] needed for Windows to boot." I was just clarifying your post so people didn't get confused.
As for booting a Mac Pro off a USB flash drive, if you have been successful in doing so, can you share with me your method? I've tried booting of an OCZ Rally2 4GB flash drive and it's never worked on my Mac Pro. It doesn't show up when I hold option down and if I try to boot through rEFIt, I get an error about my Mac's firmware not supporting USB booting (I have the latest firmware installed, too). I've tried GPT and MBR partitions, both to no avail. Booting off USB hard disk drives is no problem though. And I can boot off this flash drive on a Core Duo iMac.
    Any ideas?

Do you have a local network setup either wired or wireless? If so, then have both computers connected to the network. Enable File Sharing on both computers in Sharing preferences. Select the startup drive on each computer. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and check the box labeled, Shared Folder.
You can now keep both computers in sync by using a third-party backup/sync utility that will work with a network setup such as:
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Can I buy a Mac Pro in the U.S., with a German keyboard?

can I buy a Mac Pro in the U.S., with a German keyboard?

The Mac Pro Tower is NOT a laptop computer. It weighs 65 lbs, and holds four  full-size Hard Drives. It uses a detachable keyboard.
    US English
    Western Spanish
    French
    Japanese
... are readily available at the Apple Online Store, in wired and wireless.
For German, you would have to call them and make special arrangements, or pick one up an additional keyboard when you get back home.
This thing won't fit in your suitcase. Are you sure you want to pay to ship it home again? I would be tempted to sell it when you are leaving, and buy a new one at Home.
A laptop would be a better choice. These are also available with the same four choices of languages (in all models) through the online store.
You can make all the German characters and accents with the USEnglish keyboard, but some are two keystrokes.

  • Can I drag my Mac Pro Mail folder to my MBP?

I have POP accounts on my Mac Pro (MP) which is my main computer. My MacBook Pro (MBP) I use when on the road, duh..
I want to be able to access my Apple Mail from my MP when on the road using my MBP (Mountain Lion).
I have an external mirror backup of my MP plugged into my MBP so I can access all files. But I'm trying to find a good
solution how to access my MP On My Mac Apple Mail folders.
If I drag my MP > Library > Mail folder to my MBP and replace my Mail folder on my MBP, when I launch my Mountain Lion (ML)
version of Apple Mail app on my MBP, that will now be accessing my MP Mail folder files, will my MBP Apple Mail be able
to access and read the replace Mail folder and thus I will be able to see all my MP stored On My Mac mail folders and mail?
Apple doesn't support this kind of POP stuff, but I'm exploring if I could damage my ML OS, or ML Mail application?
If the mail got lost, I still have it on my external backup and of course on my MP at my office.
I gather you can't launch Mail from an external drive while booted up off the MBP internal drive...
The other idea I'm contemplating is getting something like SplashTop which would allow my MBP to access my MP
    and just launch Mail remotely.
And.. I did try option booting my MBP off the bootable external drive, but because it's got Lion on it and not ML,
the fans on my MBP didn't operate, so that's bad and I shut down immediately.
That's the saga... I can't be the only person on a MBP trying to work with and access Mail folders/files from another
computer and hoping for some creative solutions.
    Thanks,
    Steven

I actually have it the other way thinking of my iDevices as windows into my mail and my MP as my main repository. I also set my devices to delete of server any mail I move from my devices inbox to minimize multiple deleting unwanted mail.
But the real issue was to be able to access all my stored mail on my MP when traveling. IMAP is a way to go, yes. But my concern, please educate me if I'm wrong, I have 6 email accounts. With POP I can drag any email from any account to the ame folder on my MP.
As I understand IMAP each account would have its own sets of folders. So where I have "Work" ot "ToDo" folder that hold all mail regardless of account, I couldn't have one folder "Work" and drag all mail to it because folders are created per account, per ISP (and I have multiple accounts from various ISPs).
So I'd have to have a Work folder for each IMAP account and have check each instead of one the way it's set using POP - ON MY MAC on my MP.
If I'm right abou this, then using a remote app like SplashTop 2 to use any device to login to my MP to read, reply, delete, store, then is a great solution since I'm actually working on my MP remotely. Only problem would be if I forgot to turn my MP on before traveling.
Am I on the right path?

  • Unable to login on Mac Pro Server (ML)

    Hi,
    perhaps a small introduction to my problem;
We use a Mac Pro (with ML Server) as our main server and have about 5 users configured on it. They all use iMacs execpt for one user, who uses a MacBook Pro. The (brand new) server was configured about 3 months ago using the Server App. The services that were configured include DNS, iCal, File Services, Open Directory, and that's about it. On the server itself a local user (with Admin rights) was configured, all the other users were local network users.
Now, the MacBook Pro user had to be configured as a mobile user (in order to login to his MBP with his network credentials but outside the local network). We tried to do this from his MBP, and that's where we a first error (Seemed the user could not mount the ('null') home directory). So, we played around in the Server App with the File Services. We managed to get the mobile user account to work, however, it now seemed that all the users had their home directories on their local hard drive (not on the Mac Pro server anymore). Then, we tried to undo our changes... And that's when the server became irresponsive. We tried to reboot the Mac Pro server, and now, we can not even log in to the Mac Pro server anymore. It seems that "some error occured" which does not allow us to login to the system. This error pops up with ALL the users, including the local user with Admin rights...
How does one continue now... ? Is there a possibility to get back the user data (if not, not a big deal, since the system was merely setup anyway) ?
    Best regards,
    Salva

First.. there is no reason data stored on the server would be lost just because users accounts arent working.
Network logins are depdendent on Open Directory and OD is very dependent on both the client and the server's DNS resolution.
You can login locally in the server with the admin account, correct?
If so, open Terminal and paste this:
         dscl . -list /Users
If it responds with a list of users, then we know at least your open directory service is online.
You need to check your logs.
    use Console to review
    /var/log/system.log
    /var/log/opendirectory.log
    What is the result of:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
Hope you don't mind if I ask.. but do you really need network homes?
Its adds much more overhead.  I see new administrators set it up because its 'in the manual', when they really don't need it.

  • Multi User Login to Mac Pro OS X Server?

I want to be able to create two(or more) virtual users to Mac pro server & to be able to login at same time through windows based laptop/desktop. Each user should be able to work seperately. Is it possible with below config? If yes, will it cause any performance issue?
    Hardware:
    3.33GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    12GB RAM
    2 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
    Software:
    iLife '11
    OS X Mountain Lion Server
    OS X Mountain Lion

    Developers?
They can use SSH to connect, login, and do unix shell -style development any time, without interrupting the main-display User (if any). Post a Post-it Note on the main display warning the main user not to restart without warning.
All you need to do is create regular Mac OS X Accounts for them so that they will have a place for their files to be kept and can create a shell session. They do not need to be Admins. You should Install Developer Tools to be sure XCode and all the tools are there for them to work.
My son studying Computer Science logs in to our Home Server from college and runs compiles and debugs scripts all the time. We don't even know when he is there, unless he starts up the MineCraft Server.

  • How many OS can you have in Mac Pro 1.1, have 3HDD so 3 OS?

    Hi,
Currently have a Mac Pro 1.1, and want windows 64 bit as 32 bit isn't that good, keep running out of ram which slows the machine down! I currently have 2 HDD in this configuration:
    Disk 1: 250GB, mac osx 10.7.5
    Disk 2: 500GB windows 32 bit partition
                500GB mac extra storage partition
I may get another HDD if I can install windows 7 64 bit on it, i just have a few questions.
I have a patched windows 7 64 bit to allow it to install via bootcamp, but had problems before so erased it and installed 32 bit, (had driver issues on 64 bit, and non mac gpu so couldn't see boot screen).
If I install it on a 3rd hard disk, will it show up when I hold down command when i boot up? I want to keep 32 bit in case something goes wrong.
Someone with experience would be awesome!
So I want to install windows 64 bit ultimate on a third hard drive without tampering with the others, i also want to know how to boot to it if it doesn't show up in the mac boot screen!
I have 10GB of ram and would like to fully utilise it, that along with 8 cores would make a powerful machine, which is limited in 32 bit!
Also, any additional guides to install it on a separate disk would be good!
    Many thanks

In iTunes playlists and folders are two different things.  I assume you are asking about playlists.  100 will not be a problem.
However, it is unnecessary to create a playlist for Now 82.  If the tracks are properly tagged, it will show up as an album.
