Can't Login to new username created by Migration Assistant.

Brand new to the world of Macs and getting a bit frustrated.
I started a discussion earlier about how Migration Assistant created a new account and wanting to get those files to my original account. I got no response but now I'm finding a bigger issue. I can't figure out how to log on to that new user account. Initially I went to the the Users and Groups settings, and reset the password for that new user. Now when I try to log in as that new user, I get a message that says I must reset the password before loggin in. So I enter the password twice, hit reset, the window shakes and nothing happens. I've tried 3 different passwords thinking maybe it just isn't log enough, but to no avail. It won't let me reset the password at the log in screen so how am I supposed to get into the account? FWIW, its listed as a Admin account under Users & Groups if that makes any difference.
Assuming I can get in...what's the easiest way to get the files over to the original Admin account? I'm just transfering over iTunes (music and apps)...and nothing else. Is it easiest just to transfer files between the user accounts (which doesn't look terribly straightforward)? Should I delete the files and copy them over from a hard drive? Since the machine is only a few days old should I just wipe it clean and start again as if its brand new out of the box again? Again, just trying to get iTunes info copied over so my wife can sync her iPhone from the MacBook Pro instead of the PC.

First, note the short name of the account. This is the same as the name of its home folder, but not necessarily the name that appears in the login window.
Restart your computer, and while it is starting up, hold Command-S.
This will start up your Mac in Single User Mode. Once it has started up, you will need to enter three lines of code.
Enter sh /etc/rcand press return.
Then enter passwd yourusername and hit return. Now you will have to enter a new password twice.
What you type won't appear on screen, but it is working. Once you have done this, type reboot and hit return.

    Hi
I have a new powerbook and want to give my girlfriend my old G4 power book, she has a new iphone 5s, and wants to create a new itunes/apple id. When i try to de authorize the G4 and sign in with her new apple ID it says bad password, how can i release the G4 from my cluster of authorized apples and make her the owner so she can download music and more importantly sync her music with her phone, she only has 3 songs on her iphone, and loaded all her CD's into the g4 but cant sync, im no dummy and this shouldnt be hard, but its driving me crazy!!!!!!
thx u so much for your time heeeellppppp.

Perhaps, as we have the same music tastes, for now i should just authorize her phone to my power book just to sync music, not pics, contacts etc? I'd hate to overright her contacts etc lol????

  • Transferring Itunes Files from user created by migration assistant to another user

    Hello,
I was wondering how to transfer the entire itunes library from the user file created by migration assistant to my current user file on my mac. I have noticed on the file folder created by migration assistant that the itunes play counts and ratings are all the same as my old pc, but now I want to bring all of that to my new user account on this mac. I really need to learn how to do this ASAP! Help would be greatly appreciated!
also - the old user files cant be accessed by my current account (there is a red icon on the lower right of all the files)

    You have three choices:
    1. Keep both accounts. Enable fast user switching. Use the original account only for administrative tasks, and demote the new account to "Standard User" status in the Users & Groups preference pane. This is the best choice from the standpoint of security.
    2. Delete the new account. Create a temporary one with a different name and allow it to administer the computer. Log into the temporary account and run Migration Assistant again, this time selecting only the user you want to transfer. If it has the same name as an existing user, you'll have the option to overwrite that user. Confirm. Log out of the temporary account and delete it.
    3. Erase the startup volume in Recovery mode and start over. Do the transfer the right way, in Setup Assistant, not Migration Assistant. You will have to download about 5 GB of data and it may take several hours.

You can get a thunderbolt to firewire adapter. You can then get a firewire 400 to 800 cable and put the old computer in target mode. Then you can follow these instructions.

Choose migrate from other disk or volume.

  • Why "research" from finder can't find all the documents imported by Migration Assistant?

I can't find the documents I imported with Migration Assistant (after a backup) using the Finder's research bar! It only shows the documents I've already opened once. Do I really have to browse all my folders every time to find a single file?

I have/had the same problem, and SirPatrick's frustration is not hyperbolous.
I produce, perform, and DJ music, and I use my Macs (3 of them) instead of a PC because of Finder.
That being said, I just tried restarting, and that seemed to fix the problem. And the relaunch of Finder (the alt-click method) didn't work, btw. So is restarting periodically the answer? Thanks a lot, anyone.

  • Can't login to new open directory users

I have a Mac Mini Server running 10.8.2 Server. I have existing users, most with no home directory and a couple with network home directories.
However, any NEW users I add (in LDAPv3), they aren't able to login. When I create the user, the "access account" option is checked and stays checked after the user is configured & saved, and stays that way when I relauch Workgroup Manager.
However, when I attempt to login to this user from a network comptuer, the "access account" checkbox gets unchecked. I can check it again and save the account, but when I reopen Workgroup Manager, it's unchecked.
    Help???

    Good tip from Francis.
Last night I finaly was able to get things back to semi normal to summarise here are some tips that worked for me.
Things first went wrong when I tried to add a new user in work group manager. After doing this I got some quite strange behaviour.
The server appeared to hang when loggin on with the new user. but ssh to the server was working.  Finally after about 10 minutes I hit the reset button on the server it appeared to go into sleep mode then automagically it logged in the user. Wow did it work .... no,   Bad news other users could no longer ssh to the server... Arrrr.  Cause tracked down to Kerberous reported as no longer running... Clients (my family )  startign to report cant access services like email ... help...
Rather than all the pain of tryig to fix that this is what I did.
    1) Back up OD in Server Admin ( not Server.app) OD dosent show up there dont know why ??
    2) Make sure the DNS is working
nslookup, dig, hostname commands ... all reported correctly  forward and reverse MYSERVER.MYDOMAIN.COM. domain and IP address.  I even re-ordered the DNS name so that the local address 192.168.10.X was reported first  on my local netwrok before the external ip of the server.
    3) Create a completly new OD by deleatign the old one by setting is as a stand alone then re-creating is as a new  master ( use Server Admin tool )
Finally Kerbrous all reported as runnig ... Try again to add a user...
    4) Add new user in Workgroup manager open on server not remotly this didnt work.
    5) set home account with apf://fqd.name/Users/
    6) make sure home account is accessable on network.
    6) set shell
    7) in Server Admin give all permissions to services new user will need. such as ssh login as required.
    8) in Server.app ( not Server Admin or workgroup manager )
check that new user appears.  The local OD must be in the Directory Exployer search path for this to happen
and the server must be binded to this path.
I added both /Ldap3/127.0.0.1  but also importantly /ldap3/MYSERVER.MYDOMAIN.COM
    9) in Server app click on the user then select the Advanced settings. Make sure user has home dir selectd as the correct /Users folder on the server
( this was not set at first and had the value of 99  no idea why ) there are also other important settings here.
    10) Finally restore OD with perevious backup to add back the rest of the users.
Apparantly this actually does a merge not a overwrite.
End state every thign finaly working .....
except the iChat/jabber server for some reasion wont accept authanicate users.... rrrr.
Bonjour works on the local network but well the point of havign a jabber server was for family in countary A to talk to grandparents  and have private secure video phone with country B so would have been nice if that worked
    Good luck
    Hope that helps

  • Can't Login to New OD Master - Even when bound to OD

This is a completely new server installation on a multi-core MacPro of Leopard Server 10.5. I have followed best practice standards by configuring DNS first and double checking with changeip command. I than went from Standalone to OD Master and all the setting checked out. I configured DHCP for our small network. That worked fine. I than configured a home directory share with automount, created one new account and created home directory. I verified login to the server and creation of the home directory. Server updates are also done now.
Now the confusing part. I took a Mac OS X Leopard client machine, fully updated and used Directory Utility to bind client to server. Directory Utility reports bind is operational and working. I can use the Directory app to see myself as a user. HOWEVER - I can NOT login to the OD Master as the user I setup. The login screen just shakes me off as if the password is wrong. It is not.
I looked at the OD logs and I am being successfully autheticated by server. The client just refuses to login. I have tried 10.4 and 10.5 clients.
What have a messed up? <grin>

    Hi
I'm guessing when you supply the user name and password there is a slight delay before you get the shake? is that correct? Or do you provide the user's credentials and you get the shake immediately with a message telling you the AFP or SMB Server can't be found?
To start with verify if the created user is a principal of the Kerberos Realm. On the server issue:
    sudo kadmin.local -q list_principals
amongst other things you should see an entry for that user. Something like [email protected]
What you can do is to unbind. Remove the DirectoryServices folder and the edu.mit.Kerberos file from /Library/Preferences, restart the client and then place the Server's IP address in the client's DNS Server's field as well as the Domain name in the Search Domains field. Use Terminal and the host command to resolve the server's fqdn and then its IP address from the client. This will qualify the server's DNS service on the forward and reverse pointers. Use Directory Utility to bind to the Server using its IP address alone and don't bother with authenticated binding. Double-check the edu.mit.Kerberos file has been created in /Library/Preferences (this is evidence that you have received a TGT - you can refer to the server logs as well that should show this happening), log out of the local admin account and select Other. Go for the log in again and hopefully you should be now logged in with a network user's account and home folder.
    Hope this helps, Tony

  • Can't login to new Client 100

    Hi,
I have installed SAP Netweaver 7.0 SR1 SP3 ABAP Trial Version on Windows.
I have defined a new Client 100 with transaction SCC4.
I can't login to this new Client, it fails with message "name or password is incorrect". I have tried multiple credentials.
    sap*/minisap
    sap*/pass
    sap*/06071992
    None of them work
    Please can you help?
    Thanks, Olivier

    > I can't login to this new Client, it fails with message "name or password is incorrect". I have tried multiple credentials.
    > sap*/minisap
    > sap*/pass
    > sap*/06071992
sap*/pass is the one you need. For this to work you have to set the profile parameter login/no_automatic_user_sapstar to 0 (zero) and restart the instance. This parameter defaults to 1.

  • Migration assistant stalled ( 110 hours, after 30  hours ). How else can I transfer my data from PC to new iMac without wireless migration assistant?

i am a new mac user
    i have a new imac
was trying to transfer data from old pc to imac using migration assistant ( wirelessly )
i had done it once already, but i noticed that although it took about 8 hours, very little data from the c drive was actually transferred ( i had not noticed i had to designated folders to copy )
so i did it again, targetting folders on the D drive and my external hard drive F - lots of data ( about 300 GB )
after an hour i noticed that the estimated time for completion was 88 hours ! i did let it run for about 30 hours anyway and hoped for the best ...
this morning when i woke up the time remaining was estimated at 42 hours, but then it suddenly jumped to 110 hours !!!
when i came home 8 hours later, it was still at 110 hours, so i stopped it - i assumed it had crashed ...
i got a message that one folder on my pc might have been lost - corrupted
incredibly, after more than 30 hours, no data had actually been transferred to my new mac !!!!
in any case, i see now that migration assistant created a new user account anyway, which i do not want
    SO
how can i transfer data from my pc laptop to my new imac, preferrably with a direct cable connection as opposed to wireless, directly into my main account
and i how can i delete the other account migration assistant created in the initial "successful" transfer
    thanks
    chris

Ah yes, forget the Firewire cable then, use ethernet.

  • Login problem with account imported via Migration Assistant

I have a new Mac Mini running Lion Server.
I set up the first user account on it out of the box with username Administrator. It received UID 501.
Then I used the Migration Assistant to pull across my user account "charlie" from my Time Capsule backup of $LAPTOP. As "charlie" has UID 502 on the laptop it received UID 502 on the server box. No obvious conflict there.
I fired up Server, configured it as a standalone server on the LAN, and switched on the web and wiki servers. Checking the Users pane, "charlie" shows up as a valid user.
    Now for the baffling bit:
If I point a web browser at http://mini-me.local/ I get the server's home page.
If I try to log in as Administrator (with the correct password) it works fine.
If I try to log in as charlie (with the correct password) I get "Incorrect user name or password" every time. (Yes, I've tried resetting the password.)
If I create a test user account on the server and try to log in it works fine.
Note that I have not created an LDAP server -- I'm running Lion Server in about the simplest configuration possible while I kick the tyres.
Is there any reason why an account hauled across via Migration ***. might not work with Lion Server, while accounts created on the new machine are okay?

I managed to find a solution
    Here is the link:
    http://osxdaily.com/2010/08/10/forgot-mac-password-how-to-reset-mac-password/
There are instructions to reset the mac password without a CD.  You set up a new admin account then you can reset the password to your original account.
    It solved the problem.

  • Hello, I need help with my macbook pro. It looks like I cannot install anything anymore. Everytime I try to install a new software, use the migration assistant or click the lock to make changes, it simply does not react.

Hello, I need help with my macbook pro.
It looks like I cannot install anything anymore. Everytime I try to install a new software, I simply get stuck during the installation type process. I put in my password, it does accept it, but it does not go any further.
I tried to reset the password, put no password, repair the permissions, the disk but nothing will do. I nearly got stuck with the log in screen but finally succeeded in disabling it.
So I thought I might try to create a new account but I cannot click the lock to make changes. It simply refuses to react.
I am now thinking about using the migration assistant to save all my settings, data and so fourth, but again I get stuck when I have to type in my password. It accepts it but nothing happens...
I guess it has something to do with the authorization process, but can't find anything on the internet about it... Can you help me out?
    I am running Lion 10.7.3.
    Regards,
    Nicolas.
(I apologize if any grammatical/structural mistakes were to be found, english is not my mother-tongue. )

You probably won't like this suggestion, but I suggest you reinstall Lion.
First, backup your system. Next, reboot your system, press/hold the COMMAND-R keys to boot into the Recovery HD. Select 'Reinstall Mac OS X'. If you purchased Lion as an upgrade to Snow Leopard, the reinstall process will install Lion 10.7.3. If your system came preinstalled with Lion, you might still get Lion 10.7.2. Both installs are a total install of the OS. None of your apps or data will be impacted. Just the OS.

  • I MIGRATED MUSIC AND PHOTOS FROM PC TO NEW IMAC VIA ETHERNET/MIGRATION ASSISTANT. IT SAID that job was completed but i cannot find anyof my stuff. where is it?

i cannot find music, photos or documents after migrating from pc to new imac. both computers said transfer was successful but i cannot find anything. where is it?

It went to a new user Account.
Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Users & Groups to see the new Account.
For more info, see > About Windows Migration Assistant
    Notes
This process will create a new user account on your Mac that contains the data migrated from the Windows PC.  It will not merge the information with any existing user accounts on your Mac.
This article only applies to migrating from a Windows-based PC to a Mac. For assistance with performing a migration from one Mac to another, please see How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac.
Windows-specific file types, such as .exe files, are not transferred.
You will need to enter your password when you first use an account, such as when you use your transferred email account in the Mail application for the first time.

  • Problems booting new iMac after using Migration Assistant

My new iMac is less than 24 hours old and I have hit a problem I have not encountered on any Mac I have owned in the last 17 years.
My iMac booted beautifully and I hooked up my firewire external hard-drive because I have a partition there that contains a working user account that I want to migrate to my new Mac. I booted Migration Assistant, followed the instructions and waited for all my software, documents, settings etc. to be transferred to the new machine. Migration Assistant hung and it hung the computer. I tried many times with the same result. The last time though my Mac booted and got to the login screen. I did have auto-login selected so I was surprised by this screen. No matter what I did I couldn't get any response so I rebooted and tried again. Same thing. So, I rebooted in safe mode. Once up and running I deleted the migrated account and rebooted. This time I got the default blue swirly background and nothing else and each time I reboot all I get is the background image and nothing else.
    Help please?

I have solved the problem. The issue was to do with StickyBrain v3.6 StickyBrain has a folder called OpenBase in the library/startupitems folder and this causes the problem. If you are a StickyBrain user and wish to continue using it after upgrading to an Intel Mac then you have to also upgrade to v4.0 of StickyBrain.
The issues regarding Migration Assistant remain unsolved but I am happy that my machine is now working properly again. In the end I ignored Migration Assistant and copied all my files and folders manually. At least I was able to say I was doing something really productive on my computer instead of just sitting in front of it with a trance like smile on my face!
