Can't make a playlist

Every time I try to drag a song from my library to a new playlist, the song is blocked by a black circle with a line through it. Does anyone know what I could possibly be doing wrong.
I had the account on another PC (and never had his problem before)and switched everything over to a laptop. I copied the music over on a DVD. Could this be the issue?

"...then they are problably all set to read-only and that maybe blocking them from being moved."
That shouldn't be the case, iTunes doesn't even touch the actual file, when you put a track into a playlist. The iTunes Library simply consits of links to the song files.
A: I'd rather go with Katrina and smidge. Also, make sure you are not trying to add tracks to a folder, which also won't be possible.
Or, maybe iTunes has lost the connection to your music files. Check if there is a small exclamation mark next to some of those songs, or look at the "Location" Info in the "Get Info" window.

How can I make a playlist unchangable?

Right-click on it and choose "Copy to Play Order"
The songs can no longer be re-arranged (assuming that's what you meant). I think songs can still be added and deleted.

Try this, iTunes>File>New Smart Playlist.
Uncheck the "Match the following rule" box
Check the "Limit to" and make it a size suitable for your library (for example 25 GB) selected by artist
Check the box "Match only checked items"
Check the box "Live Updating"

• I want to create a playlist on an old iPod Nano (I think it's from the second generation), but the computer it was originally linked to via iTunes died years ago. How can I make a playlist out of existing songs on the iPod?

Hello there,
I have an old iPod nano which I think is from the second generation (model number A1199 if that helps) with software at the latest version it can accept, 1.1.3. I wish to make a playlist out of the songs currently on the iPod, but I can't see any easy way to do that from the iPod itself. The next logical thought is to do it through iTunes, but the iTunes that was originally synced to the iPod died several years ago now, so I can't access that to make a playlist through (it's a very old iPod). I do have iTunes currently on this computer, but that's synced with my iPhone and stores different songs which I don't want to be mixed with those from the old iPod (due to the mostly nostalgic nature of the iPod songs). Is there any way I can either create a new playlist from the iPod itself, or through iTunes without having to sync? Also note that most of the songs on the old iPod were uploaded to iTunes from CDs and so aren't connected with any iTunes Login.
Thanks for any help you can give. Also, I sorta need to create this playlist ASAP so any advice you could give would be much appreciated

The old iTunes library was lost with the old PC. However, it all that music and content is still on your iPod there are many ways you can extract this content from the iPod and import it back into iTunes.
Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time. It will recognize the iTunes library on the new PC as a new library. If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library. So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your PC first.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

• Can i make a Playlist for movies?

hi i was wondering if there was a way to make a playlist for movies like with Windows Media Player like how you can just open several clips up at once and it plays them in order i just got Quicktime 7 Pro and im confused on how i would go about doing this if anyone could explain how to make a Playlist for movies on Quicktime id really appreciate it thanks

I can suggest two ways to do playlists with movies:
A. Use iTunes. Just as you would build a playlist with songs, do it with movies. Just drop movies inside iTunes Videos source (left column), then create a playlist and populate it with those videos. Then play it in fullscreen !
-- or --
B. Use reference movies to chain several movies. This can be done with QuickTime Pro or SimpleMovieX for example.
Here is the way to do it with SimpleMovieX (I known it better, as I'm the autor of this application) : Open first movie, go at the end, then drop the second movie, go at the end, drop the third, and so on... Then do Save RefMovie. This will just create a movie that refers to the sequence of movie, but does not contain them. You can also add chapter marks to have direct access to each individual movie with Add Chapters.

• Can not make smart playlists anymore?

Since a few weeks I'm not able anymore to make smart playlists. It just doesn't appear anymore in the menu 'File'. Also I am not able to change the names of the existing smart playlists. Why do I have this problem and how to fix it?

If you're asking if you can do it without connecting your ipod to your computer, the answer is no. If you're asking if you can create the same smartplaylists on your ipod (via itunes) but have different rules (which can make them slightly different than what the same playlist in iTunes Library shows) then the answer is yes. Make sure something (one of your playlists or even just the "Music" or name of your ipod) is highlighted first. Then go to File-->New Smart Playlist and then set the rules to how you want them. (ie, "Last Played", "Recently Added", etc).

• Can anyone make genius playlist from 2011 songs?

I have tried to create genius playlists from very popular songs this year including "Party Rock Anthem" by LMFAO & "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People. I doubt that Apple Genius Servers do not have information to create genius playlists to these songs which these and other songs have sold over 4 million songs on iTunes alone.
Please if there is someone can shed light on this issue and a way to correct that would be great. Being that New Year's eve is coming up, it would be great to make genius playlists from current released songs especially #1s from 2011.
Thank you!

Never mind. I figured out that you have to hit "enter" after you type in what you are looking for and then the results will show up in the iTunes window.

• How can I make a playlist play on my iPod in random order?

I have made a playlist on my computer in iTunes. The songs are now in alphabetical order by song title, and when they play on my iPod they play in that same alphabetical order.
Is there a way that I can make the songs in the playlist play in some other order? Preferably, just a random order?
Or, is there a way that I can arrange them in iTunes that is not in alphabetical order and have them stay in that non-alphabetical order?
Thanks!

Just go to Settings, Shuffle, then turn it to Songs. The songs will stay in the same order in the playlist, but they'll switch it up.

• Can I make a playlist where songs are removed once played?

Hi-
I would like to be able to create a "to be played once" queue so I can load up a bunch of songs, hear them played, but not have them keep cropping up the next time I access the list.
I was hoping I could have a playlist--either using the OTG playlist or a created one--where I can add songs that I'd like to hear, then have the songs automatically removed from the list once they've been played. I think iPods used to do this (I had a G1 iPod I lost long ago), but I can't figure out how to do it on my new G5 iPod.
Of course I'd be open to other ways of solving the problem if a playlist isn't right...
Thanks,
Alex

As pointed out, one option I have found very useful with iTunes and my iPod is to create a smart playlist of songs that haven't been played yet.
Simply create a new playlist and tell it to only play songs that haven't been played yet (play count = 0). Shuffle still works with this play list so when you use it you still get a random assortment of tunes, but also only the stuff you haven't heard yet (well, hasn't yet been played since adding it to iTunes that is). Very useful for when you add new albums and songs to your iTunes and iPod as they automatically get added to this playlist.
Further more, once they get played, they no longer have a play count of zero and so no longer belong to this playlist, therefore, no repeats are possible. With the iPod/iTunes set to automatic update, when you sync you iPod to iTunes, anything you played on your iPod gets the count updated in iTunes. Check "live updating" on that playlist so both iTunes and the iPod will update the playlist as you use it.
Another smart playlist is the "long time since I last played it" smart playlist. Rather than a rule of play count, instead pick the checkbox "Limit To" and set it up as follows:
Limit to 200 "Items" selected by "Least Recently Played"
Of course "200" can be any number you like. Make sure live updating is checked. If you have a large library, say 1000+ songs, it will be a long time until you hear anything over again since anything played becomes the "Most Recently Played" and moves to the back of the line. But pick a decent number of songs like 200 to allow some variety when shuffling.
Also note, that by default, any new songs added to iTunes are considered "least recently played" so unless you add to the smart playlist to NOT include new songs (play count = 0) this playlist will include anything new added to the iPod.

• Can you make a playlist in iTunes and drag it to Touch?

I went through my iTunes library and picked out 5 gigs of some of my favorite songs and put them in an iPod Touch playlist so i know what to put in my touch.
When I get the touch, can I just drag the playlist to the touch and then iTunes will import those songs?

When you select the option to manually manage your music, you are correct.
What you do is drag your playlist to your iPod, then the playlist and associated music files (audio, album art, etc.) will copy over to your iPod Touch.
Now, if you select the option to automatically synch your iPod Touch, then just simply connecting your iPod Touch to your computer will do that automatically.
I hope my suggestion was helpful for you.

• How can I make the playlist column appear on the left side of iTunes?

Help! I'm left handed nearly always set everything up to the left side of the page. I'm having trouble training my brain to navigate on the new iTunes home page. Moving playlist info. etc. to the right said of the page is uncomfortable for me and distracting. Anyone know how to move this column from the right side of the page to the left?

Well, that was easy! Thanks, Steve. Much appreciated!

• How do I make a playlist to resync my ipod?

a couple weeks ago i was adding songs onto my ipod and i added too many *not enough room on my nano*, and my ipod added a new playlist to sync with *with only some songs on it*. i didnt like that idea so i deleted it. then my ipod was wiped clean, with no songs at all. i posted my problem here and eventually i got my songs back on by syncing it to an ALL playlist *a playlist with all my songs on it.* i deleted that playlist a couple days later *this time by accident, and i couldnt remember how i did it before, and i couldnt find the post i read how to do it* so i played around and made another playlist and just dragged my songs over, and clicked the "Automatically update all playlists" button. and my ipod seemed to be back to normal. but today it just deleted like 30 songs because they had moved off of my "Recently Added" playlist, and were not on my ALL playlist, because i never added them to it. its so annoying how i cant just get my ipod back to normal.
-- should i try to sync it with another playlist again? *if yes, how do i do that?
-- or should i just restore it to factory settings? *if yes, how & how do i back up itunes.
this has been going on for weeks now and im really getting frustrated, and i went to the apple store and the guy had no idea what i was talking about. i know this is lengthy, but PLEASE HELP ME!! thanks soooo much.

Why not just make a playlist with the songs you want on your iPod?
You can then make other playlists that have only songs from that playlist (if you want to have playlists).
Then tell iTunes to only update those playlists (onto the iPod).
To do this, connect the iPod to the computer. When it appears in iTunes go to edit-->preferences and click the iPod tab. Click the Music tab under that. Chose Automatically Update Selected Playlists and chose those playlists. Click OK.

You can also uncheck the songs you don't want on the iPod (uncheck them in the iTunes library). Then go into the iPod Music Preferences (see above) and then check "Only Update Checked Songs" and click OK. You won't need a playlist.

You can also set the iPod to manually update, so you just choose the songs and playlists you want on the iPod...
Managing Your Songs Manually

You could just delete some songs from iTunes so that your library is smaller than your iPod. Then everything would be back to normal.
Also, there is no need to restore your iPod. If you did, you wouldn't have to backup your iTunes Music Library because a restore only affects the content on the iPod, not your computer. Of course, it is always a good idea to backup your music.
