Can't manually add songs/video

So I've read the help file, which says to go to the "Summary" tab and select "Manually manage music and video" or something like that.
The only problem is, no such button or checkbox or anything exists on the Summary tab, or anywhere else that I've been able to find.
Truly, this is why I hate iTunes, and I was reluctant to buy an iPhone because of it. It's ridiculous that all I want to do is a few simple things that are easily done on non-Apple products, but with iTunes, there always seems to be something that makes the process painfully tedious.
So, IS there a way to manually add songs and video?? Or must I put EVERY song and video on my computer on my iPhone, or else none at all?

It's great that you've found this forum, and a quick search would have found the answer. Make a playlist, put the songs you want to put on your iphone in the playlist, sync that playlist to your phone. Anytime you want to change what's on your phone, just change what's in the playlist, then sync. Add tunes, remove tunes, whatever you want. It all works through the playlist.
If you find this process so tedious, consider that if you have different devices you might want them to have different tunes on each of them. Playlists accomplish this brilliantly. You can even have several playlists for different kinds of things, and sync multiple lists to your different devices. For example, if you've got some audiobooks, some tunes, some movies, etc., you can make separate lists for each kind, and sync only the lists you want to any of your devices.

  • Can you manually add songs to iCloud if Match doesn't do so?

I subscribed to iTunes Match because I'm a sucker for better quality audio files and there are a handful of files that have a "!" cloud next to them and then others with a "/" cloud next to them.
I know for a fact that a lot of the songs with a "!" cloud are not in the iTunes store, because they're mostly Classical music files that I threw onto my computer.
The songs with a "/" cloud are questionable, though, because a lot of those songs were purchased thru the iTunes store and they're not being recognized -- when I try to re-convert those files to MP3s, there are copyright protections preventing me from doing so.
So what I'm basically asking the community is: Is there a way you can manually add files to iCould that aren't matched thru the Match process?

I don't know if this is an easy fix or not but it seemed to fix for me. I was having difficulty seeing album artwork on my iPhone after I already updated it on iTunes. Once I updated iTunes Match, the album artwork would revert back to the original artwork or no artwork at all. This is what I did to fix that problem, a lot of which is probably unnecessary but whatever:
    1. Disable iTunes Match from your mobile device under Settings > Music > iTunes Match
    2. Power "Off" your mobile device
    3. Open iTunes
    4. Turn "Off" iTunes Match on your computer
    5. Update your album artwork manually (I suggest finding the album artwork on Google Images or thru Amazon.com).
    6. Update any other information necessary (i.e. album name, artist, composer, etc.).
    7. Close iTunes entirely
    8. Re-Open iTunes
    9. Turn "On" iTunes Match on your computer
    10. Allow access for your computer to activate iTunes Match
    11. Update iTunes Match
    12. Power "On" your mobile device
    13. Enable iTunes Match from your mobile device under Settings > Music > iTunes Match
    14. Your iTunes library should maintain any changes you made and it will be reflected both on iTunes and on your mobile device
If anyone else tries this, let me know if it works for you as well!

I have the manually manage music button checked, and I can play them on itunes, but on my iphone they appear gray and won't play.  There doesn't seem to be any reason, as one song from an album will play, but the other 9 won't....

  • How to "manually add songs" only

A few simple steps to manually manage your music in your iTunes so that your manually add songs to your iPod (provided the song amount, i.e. the Gb used, is less than the storage capacity of the touch device used).
    Step 1.
Create a playlist and drag every song into the playlist you wish to be on your iPod/iTouch/iPhone.
    Step 2.
Return to the music section in iTunes and press "cmd" and "select" at the same time on one of the 'ticks' to unselect all songs.
    Step 3.
Return to the playlist and press "cmd" and "select" at the same time on one of the 'ticks' to select all songs in the playlist.
[Note in doing step 2 followed by step 3, only the songs in the playlist are checked in the music section]
    Step 4.
Return to the music section and sort by checked songs
    Step 5.
Select all the checked songs and drag them onto the iPod/iTouch/iPhone.
    Step 6.
Return to the music section in iTunes and press "cmd" and "select" at the same time on one of the 'ticks' to select all songs.
[Now what you have is only the songs you want on your device and all the songs will show up in the manually added songs section on your device. Also by reclicking all the music in your iTunes library you avoid the unnecessary complications of songs not playing/transferring while listening to music on your computer]
A bit time consuming but it works well who like to carefully manage their library.

    Hi Chris,
I will delete this thread and repost with correct terminology to avoid confusion. Also I will include the rationale behind why you would take this approach so that people can choose to see whether they will benefit from it. I'd have liked this to exist prior so I can manage my music statistics.
Your way is right also, but is not the only way to do it and is certainly not the correct way for me. You don't "manage" your music your way.
A few simple steps to manually manage your music in your iTunes so that your manually add songs to your iPod (provided the song amount, i.e. the Gb used, is less than the storage capacity of the touch device used).
Reason: This is a good approach (not the only approach might I add) if you wish for your playcount to be tracked and a failsafe way of managing your songs individually so you do not need to rely on playlists.
    Step 1.
Create a playlist and drag every song into the playlist you wish to be on your iPod/iTouch/iPhone.
    Step 2.
Return to the music section in iTunes and press "cmd" and click on the "touchpad" at the same time on one of the 'ticks' to unselect all songs.
    Step 3.
Return to the playlist and press press "cmd" and click on the "touchpad" at the same time on one of the 'ticks' to select all songs in the playlist.
[Note in doing step 2 followed by step 3, only the songs in the playlist are checked in the music section]
    Step 4.
Return to the music section and sort by checked songs
    Step 5.
Select all the checked songs and drag them onto the iPod/iTouch/iPhone.
    Step 6.
Return to the music section in iTunes and press "cmd" and click on the "touchpad" at the same time on one of the 'ticks' to select all songs.
[Now what you have is only the songs you want on your device and all the songs will show up in the manually added songs section on your device. • Manually add songs with itunes match

    Hi All,
I am wondering if it is possible to manually add songs to my new iPhone 5s via iTunes and the lightning cable.
I use iTunes match and love the service but it seems crazy that I would have to download 1200 songs plus across the internet to have them on my new handset.
Is there a work around that lets me manually put the songs on my iphone and then enable itunes match without loosing all those songs?
I am on a very slow and data limited internet connection and it will take me months to get all my music across.
    Cheers for any help,
    Elle

I think Apple has to comply with the reality; lately this company I adore is gettin on too much new things way before they work as it's supposed to.
Itunes match is great if I can download my songs on the go, it's a nightmare when I have to add new songs.
Why can't I manage them manually?
Why am I forced to spend money to upload them and again spend money to downolad them when I can use a cheap usb cable?
Apple stop you run and come back to do simple things that seamlessy works, that's what you're famous for; not the "200 new functions" a year that nobody is able to let work...

  • Why can't I add songs to my iPod Touch 8GB 4th Gen?

I had an issue with songs being present on my iPod, yet the artists would not appear under "Artists". So I turned off "Group by Album Artist" in Settings and the problem was solved. However, and I don't know of that's the cause of the issue, I can no longer add song to my iPod. I add them manually, and when I do, I see them in gray under "Music" on iTunes with the sync logo next to then as if they're still being updated to the iPod. Yet they never do.

What happens when you try to sync tracks to it via iTunes? Any error messages?  Does the iPod still appear under Devices in the left hand pane of iTunes when you connect it via USB?
How is your iPod configured to sync with your library? In other words, what options and settings do you have in place from under the iPod's Summary and Music configuration tabs in iTunes?

  • I can no longer add songs to my Ipod touch

These are the things I have done:
I cleared space, as mine doesn't have a lot of it.
I updated both itunes and Ipod software
I have restarted both my Mac and my Ipod.
I have checked to ensure that "manually add songs" or whatever it says is enabled
The plus sign appears and once it even said "Updating files on 'Aquarius' " but when I checked, there was nothing there.
I don't want to go to the apple store as its a bit of a treck and Im disabled so its not that easy.
Please help, music is the only thing that makes it better and the new GreenDay comes out in a few hours.

I fixed it. Had to do a complete restore. Bleh! But so glad to have my baby back.
    Thanks for viewing!

Can you manually add data to Nike + or do you need to use the Nano?
What if you are on a trip and forgot your Ipod. It would be great to be able to add lost data. or even edit the Ipod data on the Nike + website

    Hi Hrbrmstr,
That will be very cool if you can create an xml file
that will allow us to add runs and edit runs on the
Nike+ site! The trick may be getting past the server
dragon which sends out a warning saying, "Your
workout data could not be sent to nikeplus.com
because the data could not be accepted by the server"
when it does not like the data it is sent.
For example, my runs that did not post had something
in common: when I read these xml files with TextEdit,
both have a line that says,
    "<stepCounts><walkBegin>0</walkBegin>". There's also
a line that tracks steps run. It also said zero. Of
course, these lines should NOT read zero, because I
was not starting at zero steps! My guess is that this
anomaly makes the Nike+ server either reject or
delete these runs because the step count does not fit
    my other runs.
Well, I'll leave this stuff to someone who knows more
    than I. Glad you're here.
For jackt123, the longer is answer to your question
is that certain things that are not doable now may be
doable in the future. Stay tuned.
I just got the dragon today. "Your workout data could not be sent to Nikeplus because iTunes received an unexpected response from the server. Please try again later." Did you ever find out why this happened to you? I went on nikeplus and it did in fact upload my latest run. Now my goals are blank on nikeplus.

  • HT1399 Can I manually select songs from iTunes? If so, how?

Can I manually select songs from Itunes? If so, how?

I have the iPhone 5. When I plug my phone into iTunes to select different songs, as my libraray is too large to keep it all on my phone. The only choices that iTunes gives you now is Artists, Genres, etc. I don't see the ability to just select song for song, like the older version of iTunes. Which in my opinion, was way more user friendly.

  • Can I manually add videos to my iPod and remove them from my Powerbook?

    Greetings,
First of all, I wish everyone a merry christmas and a good new year.
I love my new iPod 5G, and have been copying plenty of videos. Sadly this has resulted in the depletion of hard disk space on my Powerbook. I was wondering if I could manually update the videos like you can do so with songs so that the videos remain on the iPod and not on the Powerbook.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks.

Thank you and happy holidays to you also.
First, burn the movies to data disk as a means to back up all of your movies, music, etc. Then transfer them to the iPod & you can delete them from the PB. Make sure you go into your Preferences and set the iPod to "manually manage songs & playlists" first so that when you next sync you won't accidently delete the iPod contents.

  • Shuffle Gen2 - can't manually manage songs

In the past, (before version 12 of iTunes) I was able to manually add and remove songs to and from my Shuffle.  Now when I open up iTunes and click on my device (the Shuffle) ALL the songs are greyed out.  I have searched the net and I have READ Manage content manually on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod - Apple Support and there is NO such option as "Manually manage music and videos." on the Summary page for my Shuffle.  In fact, I can NOT find this option anywhere on any of the Menus.  Would sure appreciate some help here.  Thanks!

How can I manage songs from both, the iMac and MBAir, without erasing the songs from each other?"
    You cannot.
You can manually manage/sync with one and only  one computer at a time.

  • Can't manually update songs through iTunes

I have had my iPod mini and iTunes set to let me manually transfer songs for almost a year now and updated to iTunes 5.0 a few weeks ago. I didn't try to update my iPod until tonight, and now iTunes is not letting me click and drag my songs to my iPod.
I have tried using Add to Library and Import, none of that works. I also went to all the help windows and webpages I could find, but all those did was brag about how you can automatically sync. (I don't want to start syncing automatically because I have 500 songs on my Mini and only about 30 on my computer; I'd lose everything.) I've also tried restarting my computer and plugging the pod directly into the computer.
Is there something really simple that I just overlooked?

Well I'm not updating my iTunes any more, that's for sure.
I finally figured it out: the two songs I was trying to put on the iPod were iTunes Free Downloads. They must have a hidden limit on the number of free downloads that you can put on your iPod. I'm able to update with songs off of CDs or songs I've bought, but not the free ones. I can still get them onto iTunes, put not onto the iPod.
Personally, I think that's a rip off. A "free" download ought to be entirely free. Why download it if you can't put it on your Pod and take it with you?
