Can't migrate date from old mbp to new mbp using maverick

Hi have a new MBP 15 and 1 old one 12 maths old bothe running maverick. Have been trying to migrate data from older MBP but they keep disconnecting as soon as the transfer is about to start.

Use the Setup Assistant during your initial setup of the new computer. You will need to connect your old computer to the new computer to do this. You can do this using a current Time Machine backup of the old computer if you can connect the backup drive to the new computer. See Target Disk Mode and About Windows Migration Assistant.

you may be lucky, but you should expect problems if you do that.
you should properly install your adobe software using the adobe installation files.

  • How can I migrate data from old macs second harddrive in time machine backup to my new mac?

    Hi,
I have a little problem migrating all my data from my old Macbook to my new Macbook. I had two harddisk installed in my Macbook and did make a backup to a USB Disk. It seems that both harddisk are included in the backup. I can see them in Time Machine.
Now I want to restore my data to the new Macbook Retina. Unfortunately the Migration Assistant only shows the system disk, but not the data disk.
How can I access the data disk in the backup to restore the data to some directory on the new Macbook? The data is mostly the iTunes Library of my old Macbook.
    Regards

If the migration assistant doesn't work and you have no backup then you will have to take another path that involves a little more manual work. Anyway in your situation a fresh start seems like a good idea. So set up your new Mac with the same username and afterwards copy your user folder from the old to the new either using your ethernet connection or an external USB drive. This will also bring your user's Library folder along and retain most of your settings at least as far as they are applicable in Mavericks.

  • Can i migrate data from old 2008 macbook to new macbook pro retina? if so, how?

if anyone can help me this, i'd be grateful. have had a frustrating few hours trying to answer this question. just bought a macbook pro, retina, running mavericks. i can't figure out if there's any way to get my data off my old computer, onto the new. i can't upgrade to snow leopard because my computer won't run it. whenever i have tried connecting the two computers via ethernet, the new computer won't recognize the old (though i think the old recognizes the new). i don't have a time machine backup, because my computer is so old and full, that it became corrupted. (which is why i got a new one). does anyone have any answers or suggestions on how i could do this? thanks. --nancy

  • Can I migrate data from "old" user account to new user after clean install?

I've just done a clean install of Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro (I erased system drive before install). I've upgraded SL to 10.6.2 using a generic administrator account. And I have an exact bootable clone of my old data (SuperDuper backup on external drive).
I don't care about migrating all my old software; I'll reinstall it. But I would like to migrate system preferences, mail accounts, iCal calendars, and keychains etc. And some silly part of me wants to REname my username. (Also: I can't use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant because some part of the old image has Microsoft Entourage hooks in Mail and MobileMe that I want to get rid of.)
So here's my question: if I create a new account with the NEW user name I want to start using, can I STILL then copy over my old data? I don't know which of the below stuff has my old user name embedded in the data. Here's the list:
    Your data in ~/Documents
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
Also in ~/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need)
~ /Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist *This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.
~ /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Application Support/Safari (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Application Support/iMovie (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Pictures/iPhoto library
    ~/Music/iTunes
    ~/Movies/iMovie
Thanks for any input! I know a lot of people here have done clean installs, so I appreciate anything you can share.

what exactly do you mean by that? you can use Migration Assistant to migrate your user only (no applications). that should most likely suffice and i don't think Entourage will be a problem. you'll have to delete various entourage folders in your documents folder afterward if you don't plan on using it anymore.

yes, as bdmarsha said, your user name is not mentioned anywhere in your home directory.

  • Can I transfer system from old macbook to new macbook using same OS with time machine?

I have a MacBook running snow Leopard.  Thinking of getting a new Pro but want to just transfer my entire desktop and system to new MacBook using Time Machine restore.  Is this possible?  If not what are my other options so I do not have to rebuild desktop?
    Thanks!

You can do it either directly from the older MacBook or from Time Machine. Your new MBP is unlikely to boot to the system on the MB as the newer Pro will have a later OS build and different hardware drivers among other things.
Just use Setup Assistant. When you boot the new MBP, after the welcome video you'll be taken into Setup Assistant; you'll be asked if you want to transfer your Applications, Home Folder and prefences from another source. Choose either 'from another Mac' or 'from a TM backup' as appropriate, and connect the Mac (by firewire) or the TM drive when prompted and let it do it's thing.
That will ensure you get one account with no permissions errors and all your stuff should work just as it did on the MB.

  • Migration assistant from Old Mac to New(but used) Mac, email recovery.

Recently used Migration assistant (using external as a back-up) to move from an old Mac using Snow Leopard to a new mac using Lion. Lost the use of my entourage with the new Lion OS and I'm swithing to use Apple Mail, but I'm not being successful is transfering my previous mailbox and past emails.
Tried to "import mailbox" from entourage, but I get "Unable to locate Microsoft Entourage mailboxes to import."
    Ideas?

FireWire cables are dirt cheap and that's how you should be doing the migration. You might have to start over, wiping the new machine's HD, and restoring the software as described in the Everything Mac manual that came with it. See Best Practices and Setup new Mac for more details.

  • Cleanest way to migrate date from old mac to new

Getting ready to purchase a new imac. Im wondering what route to take to more my data over. Id like to make sure the new machine stays as clean as possible and not carry over any potential issues. Does migration or setup assistant filter out unnecessary or even conflicting files? Is it better to move individual files and if so can i do this using Time Machine? I have both a time machine back up as well as CCC back up to choose from also.

Use the Setup Assistant during your initial setup of the new computer. You will need to connect your old computer to the new computer to do this. You can do this using a current Time Machine backup of the old computer if you can connect the backup drive to the new computer. See Target Disk Mode and About Windows Migration Assistant.

  • How can I tansfer data from old ipad to new ipad

My daughter is taking my iPad 2 with her out of the country and wants to wipe it and start clean.  I have a new iPad coming but it may not be here before she leaves.  Can I put a backup of my current iPad on the new one?  How do I go about that?
    Thanks for your help.
    Paula

Many thanks to you all.  I do currently have my iPad on iCloud but signing in to it is not as easy as they'd like us to think.  I couldn't even get into these discussion groups from my iPad because Apple insisted I had to make a new user name.  When I did that just to satisfy them, tho I"ve had this one for years, it then told me my login address already had a user name associated with it and I could not create a new one.  But, it would not let me in without creating a new user name.  Vicious circle.  I signed in from my desk Mac because it isn't on iCloud and no problem with my old sign in.
Anyway, I will restore from back up.  I appreciate the help from all of you.

  • Transferring data from old imac to new imac using Time Machine.

Old imac is a 2006 that does not take Lion.  New Mac just purchased this month is a 27in imac.  I tried to set it up using firewire, but old imac wont join new imac to to the different versions of Snow Leopard and Lion.  I wnt back in and used the Time machine to start my back up.  New imac keeps going to sleep, bu I think it is stilll trasferring.  Old imac shows msg that Time Machine is unable to complet this task, but after clicking OK.  It continues to march.  I think I have 10 hours left on the transfer.  Is there an easier way to do this?

you are welcome. and here is a link to a pic of firewire connectors. the one on the left is FW800 and on the right is FW400

How can I migrate data from an old MBA to a new one without having access to the screen of the old one? The screen of the old MBA is damaged !

If your "older" MBA has a Thunderbolt port then it isn't that old. See Target Disk Mode about how it's used. Note that without a monitor you won't be able to tell from the screen when it has fully started, and if it succeeded in starting in TDM. If it did, then the hard drive should appear on the Desktop of your new computer. You can then access it to transfer your files. You can even use Migration Assistant or any backup utility to transfer data. Just don't try to transfer system files.
