Can't mount a Firewire RAID 0 volume at Startup

I have two Firewire 400 external drives connected to a Mac mini. I created a RAID0 volume with the two drives. I find that the RAID volume is not automatically mounted when the system starts up or restarts. When I login to the machine via ssh and do a 'ls /Volumes', the RAID volume doens't show up.
I then login 'normally' on the Mac mini and notice that right after the Mac OS X desktop appears, the volume icon of the RAID volume shows up about one second after the boot volume's icon shows up --- I'm assuming the delay is caused by the RAID volume mounting after I login.
My question is: how can I make the RAID volume mount automatically when the system starts up unattended?
(Note: this problem might have just happened after a Mac OS Update to 10.4.6 -- or it might have behaved like this all the time but I never noticed. I've read the threads about the hazards of updating Mac OS with Firewire drives connected . Unfortunately, I have done Mac OS Updates with the Firewire drives connected but Disk First Aid says there's no corruption.)
Mac mini G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   PPC G4/1.42GHz/512K L2/1GB/167MHz bus/80GB
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2.16GHz 2GB RAM 256VRAM

I just wanted to follow-up with a correction and a workaround.
Correction: it's a RAID1 mirrored volume that I'm trying to mount at start-up.
Workaround: I went to my Account Preferences to automatically login as me when system starts up, and then set the idle logout time to 5 minutes (the minimum) in Security Preferences.
It's not perfect but the machine runs unattended anyway so it should be alright. I'm now very hesitant to update to 10.4.7.
In the mean time, please respond if you have any ideas.
Thanks very much!

  • Mounting more than 2 NAS volume on startup

I am trying to mount a bunch of NAS volumes on startup. Problem is I can only have 2 volumes mounted. Let's say I add Volume 1, Volume 2 and Volume 3 as Login items for a user, when I restart I only get Volume 1 and Volume 2 mounted. If I check the login items prefs, I have Volume 1, Volume 2 and Volume 1 again (instead of Volume 3). I tried on different computers even with different OS (10.9). This is very annoying Any idea??

    Hi Toke Lahti;
With the additional information you just provided, all of the talk about RAID might have been a red herring in this case. If you will look here, you will notice that it might be the version of FCP you are using.
On the subject of your RAID, I still say that your configuration with partitions that are being used in RAID arrays is not the best solution. If it were my system I would seriously into changing the configuration so that you are not using partitions.

  • Can not boot from a RAID 5 volume

    Dear Friends,
I have a Mac Pro (3 GHZ) with RAID that will not boot off of a RAID 5 volume. Here's the details:
The unit has 4 768 GB drives that I have made into one RAID 5 set. After that I broke it down into 2 two volumes one for OS (200 GB) and one for storage (the balance of the RAID). After that I copied a known good image to the OS volume.
The Start-up disk utility on the DVD sees the OS but when I boot it sits for a long time and eventually gives me what Apple calls the prohibited icon; a circle with a line-through it like Ghostbusters.
The patron table is good, and I have done this on another Mac Pro. I have tried to rebuild the RAID a few times with no luck. Ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

My guess is that the Mac OS X system is damaged. You may need to use the Sysytem CD to perform an archive and install.
For those interested in bootable RAID cards on the Mac Pro, the Areca is the only non-Apple solution that I have found with this capability. You can read more about it here:

  • 3rd Gen. iPod -- can't mount with FireWire, can't restore

When my 3rd gen. iPod is plugged into an Apple computer by USB, it mounts but it won't charge. When it's plugged in by Firewire, it charges but won't mount.
When it's plugged into a Windows computer by Firewire, it charges but won't mount. When it's plugged in by USB, it doesn't charges and doesn't mount.
This was tested using multiple cords with the same results.
The problem seems to be with the software currently installed on my iPod. But I cannot restore the software in OS X, because the iPod won't mount with Firewire (which is necessary for a restore). And I can't restore it in Windows because it won't mount at all (I think it's because I originally formatted it on an Apple).
    What can I do?

I am having the same problem with my 3rd generation iPod. I've made several posts here just to discover MANY more with the same problem.
I did get one reply that was helpful:
There is a cable available through the apple store
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/2.RSLID?mco=5 2A56EB0&nplm=M9688G%2FA
It plugs into the bottom of your iPod and has two cords: 1 firewire and 1 USB. Plug both cables in to their respective ports and you have a fully functioning iPod.
This is a klunky fix but it works and is cheaper than a new iPod.
I'm guessing that the June update screwed up the way our iPods communicate to their host computers, knocking out firewire.
Two years ago I had a 1st generation iPod that crashed after an update. Fortunately I had an extended warranty and was able to get a new one at no charge. Interestingly, there was another update that would have fixed the older iPod. I'm hoping for another update like that.
I can hardly believe that Apple would be so sinister as to sabotage everyones iPods in order to get them to buy new ones but it sure feels like it.
It looks like its time for a sixth 'R' !
    Thanks!

  • Can't mount LUKS on RAID with single click

    Hello
I use KDE and I want to create encrypted volume on software raid 1, which I could mount from time to time as simple as just with one click in dolphin +  entering the password.
I tried with single drive, and It works. I mean I click on drive then I'm asked about password and I can see another unencrypted volume.
When it comes to RAID ... I'm asked about password, but unencrypted volume doesn't appear (can't see any error on bottom bar because of window refresh). Mapper device is created under /dev/mapper/luks_crypto_.... which I can mount manually.
Anybody have experience with such configuration ? Any ideas what's wrong ? Where to start ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind Regards,

  • Flashback - can SL mount really really old CD volumes (non-Mac)

The short answer is NO - but I'm wondering if there is a work around?
Back in the days of System 9 and before a program called "Access PC" from Insignia was able to mount DOS and other non-Mac Data formatted discs on a Mac. I have a few such CDs and wondering if there is a modern day counterpart to this - or "Mount Everything", another handy tool from those days that helped read any type disc.
In some cases, the volumes we have may not even be DOS...but proprietary data. Still, data is data, yes? they can be copied in Toast - but not seen.

Looking into it further, one I have appears formatted as "Partition Type : CDROM_Mode1"
Probably not helpful, but even Toast cannot mount it - only make copies. I guess that will have to suffice. The thought was to be able to consolidate and backup this old data onto another format, DVD, HD, etc.

  • Can I mount a firewire device in single user mode?

I've still got this idea I can rescue data from a hard drive that won't mount.
I put my external backup drive on another iMac to simulate what would happen. Briefly,
I plug in the drive, note the device name.
I reboot into single user mode.
The drive automatically powers off. Grrr.
I turn it back on again. It does not show up in /dev

How far did you go under "single user" mode? In "Tiger", running 'sh /etc/rc' (instructions to use this are included among the messages displayed starting up in single-user mode) starts up all sorts of things. Perhaps plugging in the drive after the script has run will have it show up in '/dev/' (I haven't tested this)...

  • Can't mount 3rd party DAS storage and Xsan volume simutaneously

Xsan client(MacPro) equipped an Apple FC HBA card can't mount SGI TP9300 DAS storage and Xsan volume simutaneously when powering on or restarting.
Among 2 FC ports, one port is used for Xsan volume using Xserve RAID, and the other port is used for SGI TP9300 storage which is directly connected to that Mac.
When booting, Xsan volume is always mounted normally, but SGI TP9300 volume is not.
Sometimes TP9300 volume is mounted about 20~30 minutes later.(I attached system.log file)
The LUN of TP9300 is seen at Disk Utility, so it's not physical problem.
It seems that actual volume information is not correctly processed at booting time.
While, after booting the system with the FC cable for TP9300 disconnected and confirming that Xsan volume mounted normally, then connecting the FC cable for TP9300, the TP9300 volume is mounted immediately.
Mac OS X 10.4.8, Xsan 1.4 is being used.

Yes, I think you screwed your xsan volume. You can not remove luns from pools, and you can not remove volumes from volumes.
How important is your existing data? In your case I would concentrate on that. This is not trivial. Theorotically you have lost your data allready. In practise you might have luck.
Once I was in your kind of twilight zone, and managed to keep the data. It is a complete cli job. You have to be very carefull about with your config files. You could hire an experienced xsan consultant. If that is not possible, read the manpages very carefully before doing anything on the volume.

  • Can't mount two FAT32 volumes at once?

OK-- I've done it once or twice, but now I can't---
I've got two 500GB external WD drives formatted as FAT32 (the drives are sometimes attached to a PC at work) with different names and different data on each.
I can't mount more than one at a time; if I dismount one drive, then the other can be mounted and vice-versa. I do this via Disk Utility. So if one drive is already mounted, then clicking the 'mount' button while focused on the 2nd drive makes that drive access light flicker briefly before it just gives up.
Funny thing is, I have managed to do this once or twice on this G5 tower, and no problem at all on my MBP, both running OSX 10.4.9.
When a given drive is properly mounted, it works fine, and both are in good repair according to Disk Utility.
Is there a limit to the number of volumes OSX Tiger can mount if they're FAT32?
    Thanks!

I recall a previous post ( among what are becoming many, many posts on these WD external drives not working regardless of bus) that they had different names but in the bowels of the drives/bridges they were showing up as the same drive and OSX can't deal with that. If they are multi-input trying one on USB and one on firewire would be interesting.

  • Can't mount volume

i've got a second hard drive and in doing some copying and the program coming to some error and crashing (no error reported, but it was while using Carbon Copy Cloner and after the copying was finished.
The disk was showing issues and Disk Repair in Disk Utility said it had a Volume Header error that it couldn't fix. when I have the drive in, I can't even boot up (even though it's not my startup drive) It just sits at a blank, gray screen (as if it's about to show the dark gray apple logo and spinning busy thing at the bottom, but it doesn't.
Sounds like this volume header error is causing the problem, but I dont have a clue on hwo to fix it, since I can't even mount the thing.
What if I was able to boot up with the drive's IDE and power plugged in, but the computer won't try to mount it. Instead, I'll mount it using diskutil at the command line. Maybe if I can mount the correct partition, it will 'ignore' the boot partition and I can get it mounted as a temp fix? I just don't know the /dev/xyz path
EDIT: this kind of makes sense to me... if i can go into single user mode on the good drive, plug the second drive in and then manually mount it. if it works, i can run fsck. thoughts?

I tried your advice and some other things. Here's what I've come up with:
    - both hard drives work
    - both can be mounted, but NOT AT THE SAME TIME
    - having both connected (physically) at startup causes the computer to hang at the gray screen and never displaying anything more (no apple logo either). there's a little pin beside where the IDE cable goes in, and both drives are properly connected as Master w/ Slave and Slave, respectively.
    - i can boot into both. in order to make the volume on the 2nd drive, i just had it archive the OS on there and replace it off my OS X cd. I told it to keep the user data for the new installation, but when i got to the login screen, no usernames worked. by default, the clue option wasn't on, so i couldn't even see if it somehow had an old copy of the password file (although i would think that's a stretch)
The only other info I think I've left out is that the second drive's volume still has its original name, so it's not like it somehow got to become literally an exact duplicate of the original, first hard drive's volume (initially, i wondered if that was the case and that the computer thought it was trying to mount the same volume from two locations)

  • Can't mount SAN volume 'cause it already shows mounted.. but it's not

after controller 1 had a problem and controller 2 took over, one volume on one client (of 6) won't mount.
all volumes on all other clients OK..
the error says it's already mounted and looking at
    ls -al /Volumes
    it's there..
looking at df , it's not
    looking at finder, it's not
running diskutil unmount , it's not
    (or mount -u)
so I can't unmount what's there cause it's not there and I can't mount what's not mounted cause it thinks it already is mounted .
    any ideas ??

after a MDC fail-over the finder sometimes creates an alias file with the name of the san volume. after all it's a broken alias.
disconnect the FC cable. in the finder (or terminal), go to /Volumes and remove the broken alias file.

  • HVX-200 can't mount using the iMac Firewire 800?

My specs are Mac OS X 10.6.6 , iMac 2.8 i5 with 12GB of ram.
I'm trying to mount an HVX-200 Panasonic using P2 cards on my new computer via the iMac's Firewire.
Each time I connect, load up the camera. It always gives me a disconnect message on the camera. I can't mount my camera at all! I tried this using a Firewire 400 setup on a friends older machine, no problem.
Btw, I had to by a $40+ 9-pin to 4-pin Firewire cable on the Apple store and pay shipping just to find out all this is not working...
    Any suggestions here?

That cable is fine with the iMac - I am more concerned with your camcorder; see page 10 of the FAQ:
    +Does 24PN have a IEEE 1394 (Firewire) mode?+
+No, 24PN (and 30PN) modes do not transmit data over the IEEE 1394 (“firewire”) interface. The P2 HD camcorders only transmit SMPTE-compliant data streams over the 1394 interface, and 24PN/30PN recordings are unique modes that do not comply to established streaming protocols. Accordingly, 1394 output is disabled when using a Native mode.+
As I said, I know nothing about your camcorder, but I think it is time for you to contact the mfr and/or the store where you bought it and ask questions about these data streams and FW compliance. In the link I sent previously (description of such a cable) it said that both devices must be compliant and, according to these FAQs, it may not?

  • Can't mount (CoreStorage) encrypted volume anymore

    Hi,
    I use the following setup:
    SSD: System
Internal HDD: Data (Documents, Music, etc.)
Both disks are encrypted via the Core Storage utility.
It seems I can't mount the "Data" disk anymore.
I wanted to download a random pdf which failed. ("Downloads Folder" is on "Data" Volume) Restarted the machine and now all aliased folders which refer to the "Data" volume have a question mark overlay rendered on their icon.
It's not possible to mount/unlock the "Data" disk through disk utility a. The "Data" volume is, according to DiskUtility quite full (only 16MB left). I have the suspicion that this small amount of space left in combination with the encryption causes some trouble.
    What to do?
