Can't mount ATA CD-ROM on Netra X1
I have a Netra X1. I have an ATA CDROM attached to the secondary controller. I was able to install Solaris 10 using this. I can boot from the CDROM using the following:
boot /pci@1f,0/ide@d/cdrom@2,0:f -s
I have been unable to mount it after booting from the primary hard disk. What is the correct command to mount the CDROM?
Thanks,
Jack
Hi,
command :
mount -F hsfs /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

IMP.: Solaris 8 can't mount Cdrom automatically
i have Sun V880 server. before when i put any cd in the CDROM, system can automatically mount the CD-ROM. but from today suddenly, system can't mount CD-ROM. System is solaris 8 . so what the problem and how to resolve it?
Are the device links there: /dev/rdsk/c0d0*, /dev/dsk/c0d0*
(should be symbolic links pointing to something like
../../devices/... ?
Are the real device nodes there under /devices? Something like
/devices/pci@0,0/pci-ide@4,1/ide@0/cmdk* (your exact device names
my be different)
If you run "format", does it list your harddisc in the initial
disc menu? (Press CTRL-D to leave format without selecting a disc)
If the /devices device nodes and the /dev symlinks are present,
what error do you get when you open a harddisc device, using
"dd if=/dev/rdsk/c0d0p0 of=/dev/null count=1"
If the device nodes / dev links are missing, you may be able to
restore them by:
<pre>
mount -o remount,rw / (mount the root filesystem "read/write")
drvconfig (probe for hardware, build /devices tree)
disks (install symbolic links under /dev)
</pre> -
I've been having trouble mounting the Solaris 10 10/08 Operating System SPARC DVD after installation so that I can add packages from the DVD. Rather than burn my own DVDs, I bought the media kit. Booting from that DVD in order to install Solaris 10 on this Sun Blade 150 workstation was successful, but it should now automatically mount when I insert it. This is using the internal DVD ROM drive that came with the workstation.
I can mount the other DVDs in the kit.
I can mount the problem DVD on Windows Vista, but that environment messes with the file names while creating a ZIP file so that by the time the package gets to the workstation where it's needed, it's useless.
Next, I bought an external DVD ROM drive and got the same results on my workstation.
I then moved the external DVD ROM drive to my Sun Fire V210 server and got the same results.
Finally, I asked the fine folks at Sun to send me a replacement DVD. They sent the whole kit. The results are exactly the same on the workstation with the internal DVD ROM drive. I can't mount the SPARC DVD, but I can mount the x86 DVD for example.
I previously attempted to burn the DVDs using the only drive I own that is supposed to have that capability, an internal drive on the Windows Vista PC. That failed.
This should work using the media kit that I bought. What's the solution?

It is as jluband1 described in that thread, but only for the SPARC version of the Solaris 10 Update 6 DVD. The workaround communicated by maureen12345 is successful:

After boot can't mount SDS file systems on 3300 mount: cannot mount /dev/md
Hi
I have a SUNW,Netra-440 with two SE 3300 SCSI each with two controllers. The server was working fine but after a boot, it can not see the metadevices stored in the 3300.
I have tried restarting the SE3300 and a boot -r from ok prompt but I still can see those disks or partitions.

i can see the devices in /dev/md/appvol but i can't mount them.
Any ideas what this could be? using metaset shows nothing, metastat -s dbvol hangs.
Am I missing some patch or am I missing something here? is the SE3300 damaged? or is it a problem with SDS (solstice). I have solaris 9.
The system was working fine until we had to boot and power off to perform power tests in the rack.
thanks

root@log01 >Hi,
thanks for your answer.
Yes format displays the physical devices, but metadb -i only shows the internal disks of the netra 440, not the ones in the 3320. metadb -s dbvol -i doesnt show anything.
metaset which is supposed to show me the metadevices, says the program is not registered.
cat /etc/lvm/md.tab has the configuration but since the scsi can be seen, the devices aren't mounted.
Any suggestions?
Cheers
Oscar

I have an iShuffle 512MB (purchase OUT2005), a mini iPod 6GB (purchase SET2005) and a PC running Windows XP SP2 (ADM Athlon XP 2600, HD 120GB, 512MB RAM, 6 USB 2.0).
My mini iPod 6GB (miP6) works correctly with iTunes 5 or 6, with its original factory software and settings and now with iPod update October 2005. I dont know if everything started when I first connected them two at the same time but they were working fine in the beginning.
One day my iShuffle, connected to my PC USB and transferring music from iTunes, , started to turn off and turn on, that is, iTunes showed it connected and then disconnected even I wasnt touching it. When it came back in iTunes I started to try to transfer music to it and this time it came off, and then came back without that music I tried to transfer in. This situation didnt go better even when I try to change my iPod to the other five USB ports, neither in my Notebook (PC WinXP SP2). I have reinstalled iPod with the original CD software, reinstalled iTunes and all the things I read at this forum. The situation was going worse until now, I dont know why, I cant use it anymore. The current situation, after all I did and I will explain what was - is:
1) When I connect it to a USB in my PC or Notebook, windows recognize it as a mass storage device and iTunes dont start automatically.
2) I go to windows explorer and there it is, Drive E: removable disk, but
3) But it looks like a Drive, with no disk in it. Its a kind of a CD-ROM drive with NO CD inside it. This way, I cant format it because I cant format a drive, just a disk, even partition it.
4) When I connect it to other PCs (winXP), with no iPod software installed, the systems first recognize it as Apple iPod and then as USB Mass Storage device, but the same way at my PC: OKB.
5) When I try to run iPod Updater I receive most of the times this message: Cant mount it. Some times it recognizes it as an iPod but I receive the message, during the restoring original software process, Firmware update failure. Disk write error, as you can see here: http://www.ivan.med.br/ishuffle.jpg.
6) So, to try to use Updater, at this time, is out of question. If there is anyway to save it, I think it must be through other software or adjustment, I dont know. I will show you a brief of what I have done until now:
Windows-try
- Current updater. Reinstalled old updater and run too. Reinstalled iTunes and all this stuff.
- Changed USB connection and reinstall USB drives.
- Installed iShuffle at another machine the same way described in iShuffle Manual.
- Tried to format it using windows explorer format tool and other no-windows native tools.
- Used partition magic and other tool to try to build anything in it.
- Used Click Administrative Tools, double-clicked Computer Management, and then clicked Disk Management in the left pane. Nothing appeared. When I connect my miP6 it is there, and everything works fine. Just remember.
- Used Windows tools (CMD tools) as DiskPart and MountVol. Nothing.
DOS-Try
- I used a bootable win98 formatted floppy disk, with USB ASPI support, and the system recognized the two USB devices I have connected that time: my Apple DEAD iShuffle and my Pendrive. But it could not assign a letter to iSuffle device, only for the pendrive. Ive used DUSE software too and the same answer, even with an instruction INT13 that allow me to use Fdisk. But even Fdisk could not recognize the iPod as a Disk.
So, this is my story. If anyone could understand it and know anything better than to bury it, send me your message, PLEASE. If you want to send me any software or tool you think can help me, my e-mail addressSame problem in the US...after 1 week of use, hit the reverse button while playing and it stopped, never to resume. Tried the latest software updater for both the ipod and itunes, and received the Ipod Service and Can't Mount Errors. After multiple attempts, all I get is the updater screen stating Initializing.. Additionally, when I tried to reinstall, it stated that the ipod needed to be formatted, yet I received a message that the ipod couldn't communicate. Seems like too many people are having the same issue!

one of my partition is not mounted. I can't mount it, can't repair it. I have a lot of data in this partition, I can't erase it. Please help me.
No way around this. Your phone has to be restored using a computer running iTunes. Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

1 of my HD partition suddenly can't mount and want me to initialize! HELP!!
Hi,
If anyone who frequented these kind of problems before please let me know your solutions solving these problems. Thanks very much!!
I'm a musician and a frequent mac user,I have a Power Mac G4 dual 800 with 1.25GMhz ram running on Mac Os 9.21 but with Mac OS X installed (I need to use Mac OS classic due to some of my music softwares still need to be updated before I upgrade to OS X),I've put the Hard Disk in 2 other sub partition HD at the beginning and have been using it to put all my important audio files and songs files. No problems at all before these nightmare started!
The serious problem I'm having now is I suddenly can't mount one of my partition HD anymore.
-I heard weird sound when starting & re-starting the Mac. (Heard some Hard Disk weird sound like sound "crutch" sound" and since the partition can't be mounted, the first thing shows up after I boot the computer is asking me if I wanna Initialize the Hard Disk because it's unreadable. There is 2 choices for me "Cancel" & "Initialize" But there is no effect when I choose "Cancel" so I use the Force Quit.
2 little message saying my Main Hard Disk & the other partition are damaged but they still showing up properly and still running dangerously I think.
-I have tried to start-up by using the installer Disk came with the computer and runs the First Aid Kit to verify the disk. I can see the partition and can see the icon of it but it's just different from others (in a black tone basic classic icon) and after running the verification some following messages appears:
"Mountcheck found serious errors" (in red) then "Overlapped extent allocation,2.60" (in red) and "Hard disk need to be repaired" so I run the Repair mode and it just can't fix because it says it's not been mounted.
I've also checked the main HD and the other partition which sometimes had some problems with it but no problems been found.
-There was few times my computer do Freeze or appears a Bomb asking me to restart when I recording something using the partition for saving the data and a weird sound of hard disk comes before freezing. It seems it's always the same place of the hard disk. Also When I inserted a blank CD-R disk into the drive it just freeze and appears a Bomb message instead asking me if I wanna use the Toast or i-tunes for preparing the disk which I always used to do.
I really hope the computer can hang on just for 1 more month before I have a break to fix everything and backup everything inside or initialize everything inside.
P.S. I've another Powerbook G4 running on OS Tiger but it's mainly for my internet use. ( I don't use internet connection for my PowerMac G4)
And the Combo super Drive is DOWN,I just can't insert any Disk inside anymore. So if having another Mac is helpful for my issue, anything I would try.
Due To I'm having some urgent important jobs now so I really can't initialize or setup other new computers for my works now.
HELP! Thanks!!!Just because you can't find them does not mean they aren't there.
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located. -
Can't mount oracle database on linux system
This is same as previous posting just added
e-mail and username info fo forum posting.
I am not able to mount an Oracle database.
I am new to Oracle and am working on an Oracle8i installation on an
Intel Linux Suse 6.3 platform. I am using only one harddrive and am
not using the 4 mount points as mentioned for efficiecy purposes in
the Oracle documentation..I am using the installation cd from Oracle8i
for Linux Starter Kit by Oracle Press. If anyone has this book they
can refer to pages 41-44 for the examples I followed.
As sysdba in sqplplus using the STARTUP command I can not Mount the
database -step 2 of the 3 stage process (Start, Mount and Open the
database) of opening an Oracle database.
I show the errors I encountered when I did the first 2 of the 3 steps
in the step-by-step mode (STARTUP NOMOUNT pfile=, ALTER DATABASE
MOUNT) in the sqlplus session and alert log respectively with startup
nomount and alter database mount for this sqlplus session.
Additionally I show the init.ora file lines referring to control file
which seem to be referred to by the sqlplus error messages and the
alert.log file. Perhaps some can give me some advice as what I can try
to fix this problem.
At the end of this e-mail I added several questions I had in regard to the control
files. Any help is appreciated.

Here are my control file questions:
I need to know several points:
1) What are control files susposed to

I used the
unix find /usr/oracle \*ctl* -print
command to locate files with a ctl extension.
This resulted in about a dozen such files in
different directories as shown below:

but that is all that is said about it. Perhaps
you might know something more about it.

[email protected]
nullIt's probably not supported on RHEL5/Centos5/etc., but...
You can get the installer to function using the following steps:
- extract the cal_linux_*.tar.gz, and cd into the OracleCalendar_inst directory
In there is the actual installer, cal_linux.
- the cal_linux is shell script wrapped around some binary blobs. The installer's
problem is that Oracle is setting the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 environment
variable, which is a mistake on RHEL5. You need to make it not set that variable,
but you need to do so in a way that the size of the shell script does not change at all,
and none of the binary blobs are impacted.
- the approach I took was
mv cal_linux cal_linux.BAK
sed -e 's/LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5/LD_ASSUME_KERNEL= /g' < cal_linux.BAK > cal_linux
chmod a+rx cal_linux
cal_linux -i gui
Note: you must have exactly 5 spaces in the substitution part of the sed command, because you're replacing 5 characters (2.2.5), and the size of the shell script must not change.
If you do that, the installer should run (one warning from awk still) and you should be able to install the product.

I am not able to mount an Oracle database.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
Hi ()
My problem is accessing the database with sqlplus system/manager @oralin, on page 55 of the Linux starter kit. Do you notice the space here, between system/manager.. and.. @oralin. I think it needs to be there.
Is your database named Chestnut?
And for Startup, why are you using init.ora? the book mentions initoralin.ora on page 43.
Your configurations are different than recommended in the book. I'm not sure if any of this helps, but maybe you can help me. When I try sqlplus system/manager @oralin, the response is: can't connect to oralin.sql.
According to the book, I need to use @oralin at the end of the command in order to see if I have properly configured the server for MTS, a multithreaded server.
Any ideas? I hope I can help further.

Can't mount iPod error message
Hi, I am trying to fix a feezing problem on my iPod (on startup the display shows a folder with an exclamation mark) and was trying to do a factory restore on it when I ran into the following error messages.
Installing the latest version of Updater, I tried connecting the iPod and then saw a Windows error message that said:
Cannot Install this Hardware
There was a problem installing this hardware
Apple iPod USB Device
An error occurred during the installation of the device
The specified service does not exist as an installed service
After seeing this error message, Updater then displayed the next error message:
Can't mount iPod
Can someone suggest how I can fix this so the iPod is recognized and I can have Updater restore the factory settings?
Thanks in advance,

So I open iPod updater 11-17-2005 to try to restore my iPod and I get an error message saying "Can't mount iPod". I can't restore or update my iPod because of this error message. Can anyone help me? I've been all through the discussions, online help, etc., and can't find this particular error message. Thanks!!
I came to charge my iPod because the battery went low, after few minutes it came on with this do not disconnect, i tried to restore it also says can't mount, it has been exactly two days. Although it doesn't mount properly, Rhythmbox recognizes and lists the Galaxy Nexus in its GUI. I can even look at the device's properties window. Rhythmbox fails to list any files already on the Galaxy Nexus, though, and I can't transfer anything to it as the following error message in Rhythmbox appears:
Error transferring track
Unable to send file to MTP device: PTP Layer error 02ff: send_file_object_info(): Could not send object info.
Googling for Error 2 brought up some Ubuntu posts from Dec 12 when they had a bug in libmtp 1.1.1, but the current version installed on my system is 1.1.5-1 from the Arch repositories.
Thanks for any help in advance.@all: so you are basically telling me that my Galaxy nexus should properly mount despite the error messages in my Terminal?
@k.sarend: thank you, I'll try that once I get home.
@mzneverdies: interesting point... I didn't think the choice of the DE would have any impact on mounting devices, that's why I posted in the Kernel & Hardware Support section.
(on a side note: I was a Linux user from 2001-2004 and had KDE as my primary desktop. I just came back to (this time Arch) Linux two weeks ago with a new box and I decided to install Gnome since it seems to have progressed more... but really, I am open for both DEs, I'm not a fanboy/evangelist or anything) -
"can't mount iPOD" - unable to restore
Hi,
I would greatly appreciate any advise on the following problem...
My iPOD froze, so I conducted a reset. After the reset the screen displayed an exclamation point and folder icon. After reading the support guidelines on the site I tried the following:
I put my iPOD in disk mode, and fully charged it up (however note that although I have had my iPOD for 14 months the battery still lasts for around 6 - 8 hours).
I ran my version of iPOD updater on my pc which stated "iPOD not readable - needs to be reformatted for use on PC". The only option available to select was the restore option which I tried and the following message was displayed "Can't mount iPOD".
I thought that this message may be because my version of updater and iTunes were old. Therefore, I installed the latest versions - 2005 -11-17 and v6 respectively. However, on trying to run the newer updater again I can't see my iPOD in iTunes, my computer / desktop etc. now even when in disk mode.
Eventually the message "can't mount iPOD" is displayed.
Any idea's on what to try would be great.
Many thanks
John
iPOD Click wheel Windows XP
iPOD Click wheel 40Gb Windows XPAlright. Let me start off by saying that my iPod issue is resolved. However, before I get to the solution, let me answer other questions raised since my last post.
I did try using a different USB port. I even tried my pc at work and it had the same results. Now, for how I resolved it.
After the last post, my iPod deteriorated to the point that it stopped working altogether. When resetting it, it would just come up with the Apple icon and then turn off. Without getting into all the details, I deduced that it was a bad battery. I invested $25.95 into a DIY battery kit. It was a bit dicey performing surgery on my beloved iPod, but with only minor scarring, I now have a fully functional iPod that syncs with iTunes and functions like new.
I'm not saying all "unable to mount iPod" problems are caused by bad batteries, but it could be one of the causes. Coincidentally, my problems started 16 months after starting to use my iPod. That roughly translates to 400+ charge cycles. That's when Apple says the battery performance will begin to deteriorate. I just wish Apple's SW would have some sort of diagnostics that's more accurate. I got the folder w/ the exclamation point, sad iPod and battery icon pictures before figuring out that I needed a new battery!

How can I mount / fix my Windows 7 partition?
So a while ago my Win 7 partition was "unmounted" and it wouldnt show up in my Finder. When I tried mounting it in Disk Utility it would never work. I would click Mount, and it would't do anything. I wasn't really bothered by it since the partition would still show up when I booted and held 'alt'. I could boot Windows fine.
I was experiencing some problems with my Mac so I figured I'd reinstall the OS. After I did however, the Win 7 partition didnt show up in the 'alt' boot menu. In Disk Utility, the partition still exists, and I still can't mount it. I honestly have no clue what to do, other than to start over again. I REALLY dont want to do that, becuase I have a lot of data on my Win partition.
So im asking how the flip do i fix this...
Any help is, obviously, very apprechiated.I think you missed my point. Something you've already done has resulted in corruption of the boot loader or boot block making it impossible for you to now boot from your Windows system via your original Boot Camp installation. Reformatting the Windows partition will just remove everything already installed on it, so that would not sound like a good solution for you.
It may be possible to recover the Windows volume using CampTune, but I don't know that myself. I've not used it. The other possibility is to install a new boot loader:
