Can't mount D-Link DI-624S Wireless Storage Router Hard Drive

I have a D-Link DI-624S Wireless Storage Router that has two USB2 ports for adding external hard drives. I have an older iMac, running jaguar, connected to the router via an ethernet cable and I have a MacBook Pro, running tiger, connected to the router wirelessly.
The iMac mounts the USB drive as it should, but the MacBook Pro can't. I get a dialogue box titled, " SMB/CIFS File System Authentication" with the Workgroup field set to "MYGROUP", the name field set to my name and the password field left blank. But no matter what I type in, the password is not accepted. Nowhere in the router settings can I add users and passwords, yet, when I connect using the iMac, a blank password field mounts the drive. This problem persists even when I plug the MacBook Pro directly to the router. Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem?

rootb, Welcome to the discussion area!
The D-Link router is not compatible with WDS. Therefore you will not be able to use the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to wirelessly extend the network created by the D-Link.

  • Setting up D-Link DIR-615 wireless N router with a macbook pro

    Hello all.
I am trying to setup a D-Link DIR-615 wireless N router with my macbook pro. I got the router, opened it, put in the startup CD, and nothing works.
I went to the D-Link site and it says that the CD is not compatible with mac's, but to look on pages 10-15 in the user manual ( on the CD), which I did and found nothing related to setting up the router on my mac.
So I'm at the very beginning (putting in the initial CD) of setting this up, and wondering how to do it. Can anyone guide me through it or point me to a thread or online description of how it's done. I have very little computer background but I can pick it up decently when I have to, so please help as I will be very grateful. Thanks,
    Jonathan

Unfortunately as with most routers it will be a manual affair that is quite involved. The first thing is to connect to the router over ethernet, so you should connect the cable supplied between the computer and the router and turn the router on. Go to System Preferences and open the Network panel, make sure the DCHP setting is automatic, you should have a connection if it is already on auto, there will be numbers in all the boxes when connected. In the documentation for the router you should find an IP address for the web interface along the lines of 192.168.0.1 (this seems to be the correct one for D-Link), open Safari (or another browser if you want)put this number in the address bar and press return. There will probably be a request for password at this stage, this will be in the documentation or on the bottom of the router, fill it in and you will get to the web interface. You should then be able to follow the instructions in the router documentation to set it up. It should be fairly easy through the basic setup procedure as long as you know your internet settings.

  • Can I use time machine to back up via a hard drive connected by USB to a HomeHub router?

Can I use time machine to back up via a hard drive connected by USB to a BT HomeHub router? Is there a better way to back up and store files than via the USB port on my new MacBook Pro? I'd like storage to be accessible from my earlier version MacBook too.

I think you want to make backups without connecting a hard disk via USB. In other words, you want to have the data storage be shared in your home wirelessly.
If this is the case, I recommend using a Time Capsule.
Time Capsule works great with Time Machine. You can set up all your devices to automatically make backups on the Time Capsule wirelessly and effortlessly.

  • Can I use my 160gb iPod classic as an external hard drive for my MacBook?

Can I use my 160gb iPod classic as an external hard drive for my MacBook?

That link seems to be broken.  It does normally lead to a solution. For the time being go to
    http://www.google.com/search?q=ipod+classic+disk+mode
Let your mouse hover over the link until you see the option appear on the right to view the cached version Google contains:
Putting iPod devices with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode
If necessary, verify that your iPod has a Click Wheel.
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode, verify that it is charged.
Toggle the Hold switch on and off (set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least six seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod will should say "Do not disconnect".
If you are having difficulty putting your iPod into Disk Mode, set it on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center. If you are still unable to put your iPod into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.
If you have an older iPod model, without a Click Wheel
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode, verify that it has a charge.
Toggle the Hold switch on and off (set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears, then release them. This resets iPod. When you reset iPod, all your music and data files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost.
When the Apple logo appears, immediately press and hold the Previous and Next buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod should say "Do not disconnect".
If you have an iPod nano (6th generation)
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode,  verify that it has a charge.
Reset the device by pressing the Sleep and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the display turns black. This should take about eight seconds.
When the display turns black, hold down the Volume Down and Volume Up buttons simultaneously until the device enters Disk mode.

  • Can I make a LR web gallery in local storage (my hard drive)

    All,
I want my laptop to function as a quick viewer for showing a portfolio.
I thought I'd experiment (for the first time) with the web creation options in LR5.3, but at "Save" time point all materials, files, links, etc.  inside my own hard drive or SSDs on the laptop. There are times when I want to show someone images without depending on a connection to the Internet. I have web-delivered services I can use but I am looking for the quickest appearance and on the screen and some control over navigation (able to organize the materials). I want ease of replacement or addition of images from LR as circumstances dictate.
I own Dreamweaver from CS4, and have a little experience setting up links. Perhaps I would have to do some work in Dreamweaver?
My "real" portfolio is a WordPress.org install hosted at my ISP and I might even pay to have that template duplicated on this "local web server" but that's a different question.
Is this going to cause unexpected problems?

I like PDF for this. You can default a PDF document to open full-screen and while the transitions are not infinitely programmable, they are perfectly workmanlike. So one can construct a nice experience IMO. And it's a single file.
OTOH, one thing I have sometimes found when exporting Website to local disk: browser security settings may block certain kinds of scripting or automation, such as Javascript or Flash, from operating - that would have worked fine if accessed instead, from an external web server.
For example, I encountered this yesterday with PTGui's web Flash pano viewer. That needed to be explicitly identified as OK, within the local Flash settings, when running locally.
AFAICT, this is because the scope of the damage that a locally stored file might do, is much greater - purely due to the user permissions it inherits, according to its privileged location. A file downloaded from an externally stored website, will have been more safely quarantined and limited as to the potentially malicious things it can attempt - so will be more readily permitted to go ahead and execute.

if you have a problem dl'g, you didn't follow all 7 steps.  the most common error involves failing to meticulously follow steps 1,2 and/or 3 (which adds a cookie to your system enabling you to download the correct version from adobe.com).

  • Linking files won't search out hard drive.

    Info:
    Mac Pro
    CS5.5
I have a project with R3D Files, my HD was getting full so I bought a larger one, made a duplicate of the R3D media. Now when I try to link up the media to the new drive, Premiere wont serach the hard drive and autolink ANYTHING. (Have like 2000 files, so I can't individually do this)
It's almost as if the clips in the project have a hard drive letter or something set to it, and even when I point it to the right HD it keeps trying to find the other HD.
    How do I fix this?
    Please help. Thanks.

I may have just answered my own question, and atxspencer, maybe it will help you too, even though you're on a Mac.
I first made a copy of my project, just to make sure I could go back if this didn't work.  I have most of my clips sorted into bins, so what I did was go into the first bin and select all the clips there.  Then I right-clicked and selected "Make Offline".  A window pops up and I made sure I selected "media files remain on disk."  I'm not sure what would happen if I told it they were deleted, but it seemed to work this way.
Now the clips are labeled as Offline, so you'd get the big red screen if you viewed the clip in a timeline.  With them still selected, right-click again and select "Link Media".  Then that window pops up asking you to find where the file is that you want to link.  I kept the file folder structure the same between both drives, so all I had to do was change the drive letter to that of the new drive.  You could also just navigate there normally.  Once you find the first file on the new drive that the Link Media window is asking for, it automatically finds the other files that you have selected.  You can right click on the clip and select "Reveal in Explorer (or Finder)" and it will show you where that clip is, and it should be on the new drive.
I did find one problem though.  If you select 2 or more clips that are in different folders on your drive, even if they are in the same bin in your project, when you Link Media, it will automatically link them like before, but for the clips that aren't in the same folder as the first one that it looks for, it will re-link the clip to the original hard drive.  So depending on how you organized your files on your drive, it could take longer, or if you just threw them all into one folder, it should go pretty quickly.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I create a "new" iTunes library on an external hard drive and transfer my iTune library to save space on my laptop

Can I create a "new" iTunes library on an external hard drive and transfer my iTune library to save space on my laptop hard drive

Yes. Just copy all your music to a folder on your external. Then delete the music on your computers hard drive.
It is not quite that simple. If you do that you will end up with many broken links and will have to re-create your library from scratch .  iTunes does not like it when you move or rename files or folders and doing so between drives is guaranteed to result in exclamation marks indicating you have broken the links to all your media files.
If you are content with moving the whole library to an external drive (usually the best thing for most people), try:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

  • How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done?

How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done? I am trying to create a disc of player highlights for a collegiate coach, and I am using movie files downloaded to my hard drive from a DVD created on a PC.

No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either.  It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected.  VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB.  All of which cannot be opened or selected.
Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC.  Is that the same?  Thank you for your time and response.

Hello friends.. I have a similar question, in that I would like to purchase the 2TB TC for use as a NAS device, in addition to taking advantage of the Air Port extreme.. Then I could dump my Linksys router.
I was originally looking at a Synology NAS solution, but the TC seems like it can meet my needs.
I have a Synology NAS as well as the Time Capsule.  If you look at the 3.2 beta program, the Synology actually attempts to replicate TC functionality in that you can use it with Time Machine on your Mac.
I must say, Airport on the TC is definitely a nice feature!

In addition to the obvious feature of the backup, can I indeed also use the TC as a NAS drive to access from remote locations (example from the office)?
I'm surprised more people aren't using the TC as a dedicated NAS deviced.. I've searched high and low on forums around the web, and don't seem to see many people trying to use it as I've outlined.
I can't see why this wouldn't fufill my needs, and take the place of a separate NAS solution (like the Synology, or iOmega, Seagate, etc....)
Has anyone used this TC as such?
Yes, you can do this and it's something I've been trying to do, but I'm currently having issues.  I have another thread stating I consistently get "connection failed" messages.  I'm basically storing my music/photo/video files on the TC and keeping my Mac hard drive fairly lean.  In terms of NAS functionality, the TC is very basic.  Synology/QNAP and others have a lot more features so don't rule them out.

Why do you recommend not place things like iTunes libraries or photo libraries on the drive? It was what I am looking for...
I suggest that you ask the experts over in the iPhoto Support Community about their opinions on placing an iPhoto or Aperture library on the Time Capsule....even if you plan to use a wired connection for your Mac and the Time Capsule.
But, if Terrence Devlin answers, be prepared for a lecture about why you should not ever do this.
If you place the iTunes library on the Time Capsule, be prepared for iTunes to give you messages about not being able to find the library.
In addtion, LaPastenague has the answer for you in a nutshell......corruption problems.
Bottom line....the Time Capsule is for your backups.....not "everyday" files and especially not libraries.
