Can't Mount External HD, Greyed out in DU, Verifies fine

I have a third-party hard drive enclosure I've been using for years with an IDE drive. I have two identical external HD cases and it does the same thing in both. So I know it's not the case. All of a sudden, I can't get the drive to mount.
1. It shows up in disk utility, but is greyed out
2. If I try to mount it, I get the following error: "Mount Failed. The disk could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting"
3. Run First Aid (verify & repair), but say the disk is fine
4. Still will not mount
5. Info looks fine, although owners are not enabled. Tried running batchmod on /Volumes and that did nothing.
I'm sure I could erase it, but I have no backup for any of the stuff on the drive.
Any ideas? Everything about this says it should be working.

I'll check those out, but I think I may have found a way to get the files off the disk. I have a PC here that I use for gaming, so I had the idea to try to see if I could use the PC to view the files, since they're all still there (I was able to Defrag the disk using Drive Genius actually). I found a free app called HFSExplorer...and much to my surprise, it worked! I can view the entire file structure and extract the files to another disk.
Sorry to say, but I had to use a PC to accomplish this, but at least I can save my files. Needless to say, I don't trust this drive any more, and it's not SMART compatible, so I'll probably end up getting a new drive.
Just thought I'd let everyone know, in case they ran across this problem.

  • Moving iPhoto to external drive; have formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), moved the iPhoto library to external drive; when trying to change the library, the iPhoto file on new external is greyed out   can't be selected. What went wrong?

    Must have done something wrong..
    1.  formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - required a partition, but that went fine.  Entire new external disk was included in the partition formatted to Mac OS Extneded (journaled).
    2.  moved iPhoto library to new external disk
    3.  Holding Option key down, opened iPhoto
    4.  Choose library feature appeared, however when new library function option appeared and "choose library" selected, the iPhoto folder appearing in the new external drive was greyed out and not able to be selected.  Therefore the default library remains the original iphoto library on the Mac.
I've moved the original iphoto library to the trash and then tried to start iPhoto.  A message comes up that the iPhoto is in the trash and needs to be pulled out before iPhoto can start (clearly the new iphoto library on the external drive is not being seen.
Can anyone suggest where I went awry?  Thanks!

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
    Then try select it again.

  • IPhoto folder (saved on external drive) greyed out

Help!  I have recently purchased a WD My Book external (cloud) drive.  About a month ago, I moved my iPhoto library there, and everything was working perfectly.  I've just tried to open iPhoto, and it's not automatically loading that library.  When I try to navigate to the external drive to select it, the iPhoto folder is there, but it's greyed out...and it won't let me select it.  (I have the WD2go app on my phone, and can see that my photos are still there...phew!)  I have restarted both the external drive and my laptop.
I'm still a relatively new Mac user...and am very new to the world of external hard drives/networks/clouds, etc.
Any help would be really appreciated!!!
    Thanks!

iPhoto keeps it's iPhoto Library in the Pictures folder, it's really not designed to be moved.
So what happens is iPhoto opens up and it's program looks for it in the Pictures folder and it's not there. It likely created a new one in the Pictures folder with nothing in it.
I don't know how to tell iPhoto to look on the external drive, change to that  location,
But I can tell you the iPhoto Library (on the external drive too) is actually a folder, right click on it (or control click) and a menu pops up with "open package contents" and inside is a folder called Originals with all your pictures inside.
Post your question in the iPhoto forum and they likely have a few cool tricks up their sleeve.

  • Can't edit movie artwork (greyed out on Get Info tabs)

All I need to know is how to be able to add artwork to my movies that are being read form an external hard drive. When I press CMD+I for the get info window the option to even select the Artwork tab is greyed out and unavailabe. How do I get it to add artwork that I have found online?
I did not have this problem when itunes was reading the movies from my actual mac computer it only started when I made itunes read the movies from my external drive. I can still edit the artwork for the ones that are not on my external drive yet and are only on my actual mac computer. Why is this happeneing?

When you add a movie to iTunes you have to make sure it makes a copy of the file in the iTunes Media folder.  Otherwise, you can't edit any of the information on the movie or video.
In iTunes 12, go to Edit-->Preferences
In Preferences, go to Advanced and make sure the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library".
Unfortunately, you will now have to re-import the movie files into iTunes using "Add File To Library..." Once imported, the movie will sometimes appear under "Home Movies" instead of "Movies" but if you right click on the movie file it will list a menu item called "Get Info" where you can change the "Options" to "Movie". You should also be able to click the "Add Artwork" button.
    Hope that helps.

  • "Use RAW files with external editor" greyed out for Photoshop CS2?

I've just upgraded from iPhoto 5, and the "Use RAW files with external editor" option in the advanced preferences is greyed out when I select Photoshop CS2 as my external editor (back in the General pane).
It works fine when Preview.app is selected. I can understand that pre-CS2 Photoshop wouldn't be available, but CS2 is capable of editing RAW images.
Has anyone been able to get iPhoto 6 to send a RAW image to Photoshop CS2 using this preference? I've written an Applescript to do it in iPhoto 5, but I'd rather use something cleaner...
    15" PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Works great with Photoshop Elements, opens with Camera Raw. The issue is you can't save it so that iPhoto gets the changes.
You have to save it and then re-import. I tried all permutations of saving it in originals and modified folders in the library. No luck. The only thing I didn't try is to save it as a jpeg over the top of the full sized one iPhoto created on import.

Hi guys- I currently have a problem involving an external scsi to usb drive that I can't mount. I tried the usual commands, fdisk -l, mount, lsblk, to discover the device but it's not showing up in /dev.

I'm using the latest kernel. The device is a macally Hi-Speed USB 2.0 external drive enclosure. Yesterday my BIOS was detecting it, and later that night I actually mounted the device with mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/drive_2, I fired up the computer today and it's not there anymore, not in BIOS, not in the OS. This thing is acting very buggy and It's starting to scream hardware issues. There is a blue light on the enclusure that tells you when everything is okay, but now the light is red. Plus I can't hear the drive spinning.

  • External Editor Greyed Out

Running Aperture 3 and I have set Photoshop CS5 as the external editor in preferences but it remains greyed out. I have restarted Apeture, still greyed out.

Have you set  Photoshop CS5 as the external editor, or Photoshop CS5.app?
You need to select the app inside the folder, not the Photoshop CS5 folder.

  • Can't change APN settings (greyed out)

Hi, I have been reading a lot about my problem on this forum and on other BB-forums. I hope someone can help me because the historic forum-answers were quite depressing. . . I bought my new BB Q10 - without a simcard - last week from a well known Dutch webshop. I inserted my Rabo Mobiel simcard that I used in my BB curve. With the BB Curve and this simcard I have been emailing and browsing the internet for 3 years without problems. I can call and text with the BBQ10 but I can't get the internet working. The APN settings were already filled on this BB Q10 - unfortunately not with the APN name from Rabo Mobiel. It says: portalmmm.nl which is probably 'pre-installed' by Blackberry Holland and it is one of the APN names of the KPN provider in Holland. I can change the "portalmmm.nl" into "Rabo" but then I need to set Verification Type to PAP and that is not possible. The Verification field is greyed out and I cannot change it. I tried many ways and even tried to access the escreen:// option (which I couldn't get working) . I made phonecalls to Rabo Mobiel (they say they didn't change anything and no, they use no username and password for APN, only Rabo as account name), to the webshop (no we don't know who installs our Blackberries) and KPN (they gave me the telephone number of Blackberry but I can't get any one on the phone there!). The webshop says: please return your phone. But I know the next BBq10 will probably have the same problem. So can someone - preferably a Blackberry Technician - help me? I would really appreciate it! kind regards, Angela

    hi (93) readers,
I was wondering if there's anyone who recognizes this, or can make any suggestions? Blackberry helpdesk at Twitter is not responding anymore and only tells me to go to retailer or provider (and they remain completely silent after that)
    Thanx,

    Hi!
I'm trying to mount my new external hdd (Lacie USB2) at boot, but without success.
To avoid random device name (sdx, sdy), I would like to use UUID in my fstab file.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
But even with /dev/disk/by-uuid/6853-5BA9 in my fstab file, it fails to automount it.
It says "Special device with UUID=6853-5BA9 does not exist".
The weird thing is that I can mount it manually without problems.
(In fact, that's not true, I've the same problem than steven.  May it be a kernel-related problem?)
Or maybe there's a fault in the rest of my fstab line? (iocharset, guid, etc?)
In the case of a kernel related bug, how could I downgrade it?
I've tried with "pacman -U kernel26-2.6.21.6-1.pkg.tar.gz" in /var/cache/pacman/pkg but it broke my xorg server at reboot.

  • 3D Option is now greyed out in CS6, worked fine before, no changes to system hardware

Hello, I'm running Windows 7 64bit, and I have 2 AMD Radeon 6950's in crossfire. It has only been a couple of months since I used CS6's create 3D extrusion layer, and it used to work fine, but now it's greyed out no matter what type of layer I'm selected on. Photoshop is seeing my graphics card just fine http://i.imgur.com/LREws.png and even says that 3D is an enabled feature if I mouse-over the Graphics Processor Settings box. I have the latest 12.8 AMD drivers. So, something between Photoshop and my graphics card are no longer playing nice - maybe an AMD Catalyst software setting? Although I've made sure that all my settings were restored back to default. I should also note that all other GPU enhancement features that I'm aware of seem to be working fine (like the quick zoom rendering, etc.)

    Glad you found the issue!
And thanks for that follow-up.  Even though it seems embarrassing, don't be worried over it.  We all zone out and do this sort of thing from time to time and your description of why it happened will no doubt help others who come across this thread.
I feel a bit silly as well, as I certainly know RGB is a requirement of 3D, and now you mention it I even remember going through this before with someone, so I should have thought of it.
Perhaps the best thing to do is to ask for / post a screen grab first, before delving into a problem.  It would probably have jumped out at someone pretty quickly.

  • Upgraded to 10.4.9 on MBP 15", now, I can't mount external hard disk!

    Hi all,
I have a LaCie 500GB drive that I've been using perfectly since I've gotten it, but alas, I upgraded to 10.4.9 and it no longer mounts either by it's USB interface or by its Firewire interface.
My machine is a MBP 15" (2.16 GHz, 2 GB Ram), which works perfectly in all other respects and is now running 10.4.9.
The symptoms are that when I plug it in, I usually get the message, "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" with the options "Initialize...", "Ignore", and "Eject". So far, I haven't pressed any buttons except Ignore or Eject. Sometimes, I do not get this message, but it still doesn't mount, it just silently does nothing.
So, after pressing "Ignore", I've opened Disk Utility and had a look. The physical drive appears and there is one volume named "disk2s6" which for all purposes is probably my normal, logical volume (partition). However, last time it mounted on this machine, it was named "Archive". This logical volume is grey and will not mount no matter how many times I press the "Mount" button. It just does nothing.
OK, so, while I'm in Disk Utility, I ran Verify Disk and, after the normal routine, it comes back with "No Repairs Necessary". I've also tried "Repair Disk" and this comes back "No repairs were necessary", again after the full, normal processing of the various things.
I also performed a Fix Permissions on my startup-volume, but this didn't help either.
Next test was to mount the disk on my MacMini (PPC) instead, also running 10.4.9. It mounts perfectly and it properly comes up with the name "Archive" as expected.
I've then tried to mount other devices on my MBP including a USB memory key, and another external Firewire drive. These both mount perfectly on my MBP.
While I was at this, I've also tried new USB and Firewire cables, this didn't affect my results in the least.
I've finally verified that there is nothing in /Volumes out of the ordinary that might prevent it from mounting by doing a "sudo ls -la" whilst in /Volumes/. There's not a thing that would affect the mount-point.
I then disabled my folder actions that I've been running on the directory /Volumes *I had an action used to backup my USB key). Unfortunately, I still have the same issue.
Finally, I downloaded the Combo 10.4.9 installer, booted into Safe Mode (to trigger an automatic fsck), then rebooted and installed the 10.4.9 Combo installer, in case there was some weirdness in the Software Update upgrade to 10.4.9.
What stone have I left unturned? Why won't this drive mount, but it works perfectly elsewhere? I want to get back to using Aperture on my MBP and my entire photo Library is on this disk (well, and backed up on another external drive, but it lives normally on my MBP).

I just bought a Medion HDDRIVE2GO (Full Speed) from Aldi, and at first when I plugged it in, everything went fine (well, I thought so). Appearently it had some errors with HAL not being able to read the HDD (error name="(unset)").

I found this post on linux forums which say It's a HAL related problem.
"rmmod ehci_hcd" made it work for some of these guys Which one of them explains It's a data speed issue. Cables.., 2.0 1.0, that sort of things. Read it, I bet you'll get more out of it, It's old though.
Try removing the module, plugging the drive, check dmesg, and mount manually.
