Can't mount Time Capsule on PC (white system tray icon no longer there)

My new time capsule is working perfectly on my MacBookPro, however recently I tried to get it to work on my PC laptop. I easily got the wireless internet work on the PC, that's not a problem. I installed the airport utility on my PC and it was able to recognize it through the airport utility interface/configuring window where I could change settings, etc., just like I could on my Mac. There used to be (on my PC) this white icon in my system tray on the lower right of my screen. When I clicked on this I could type my password, as prompted, and mount to the time capsule, which I could now see in My Computer as a drive. I tested a few files by dragging them over into the drive, and it worked fine. Now, a week later the icon in the system tray has disappeared, and I can no longer see the time capsule on my PC in My Computer. I can still click on the airport utility icon in my programs and see/change settings in my time capsule from my PC, but cannot see nor access the drive from My Computer (or mount by clicking on this now missing icon). Anyone else know what I can do? Thanks in advance!

I was just having this problem and figured out that the white system tray icon is the Airport Base Station Agent. It wasn't running for me for some reason, too, but I found it and started it back up again at C:\Program Files\AirPort\APAgent.exe.
Here's an Apple Support article (it's a little old) I found that discusses drive mapping in windows with the Airport Base Station Agent: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1331
Hope this helps.

  • Can't Back Up Fails to Mount Time Capsule

I suddenly can't back up any more. It fails to mount Time Capsule. I am able to mount the Time Capsule via the Finder. I have mounted it and run Disk Utilities on it once it is mounted. It checks out with no repairs.
    What gives?
By the way there is plenty of empty space on the drive.

The problem corrected itself after I using disk repair and manually unmounting the image via the finder. I found it helped to connect to the drive via ethernet to do the back up because it had been so many days and it was taking all night to do the back up wirelessly.

  • How do I turn on SMB Sharing so I can access my Time Capsule remotely via iPad w/FileBrowser app?

I know I can share the time capsule, but I don't want to have to have my computer on, I just want to enable sharing and then access the files via File Browser on my iPad and Stream my movies and music stored at home.

Are you saying that your new Extreme no longer needs for you to enter the terminal script to enable TM backups to an AirDisk?
Yes, exactly that ... although since it is the Mac that runs Time Machine & uses its own system preferences, I don't think it is the new Extreme itself that makes the difference but instead some update to the OS (10.5.5, maybe?). As I understand it, so many users expected that in this respect an Extreme with a USB-connected drive would be the functional equivalent of a Time Capsule that Apple updated the code to support it, even without setting a hidden system preference for Time Machine to show (& use) "unsupported" drives.
IOW, I suspect the key is no longer necessary for anyone running up-to-date system software. If you want to check this, you can use the "defaults" terminal command to do so. For background info, see the Mac OS X Manual Page For defaults(1) for its purpose & options, but briefly its three major modes are "read," "write" & "delete." Using the "read" option as I did in my earlier post should tell you if the preference key/value pair exists & if so, how it is set. If you replace "read" in that command with "delete" it will delete the 'show unsupported' key:
    <pre> defaults delete com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes</pre>
You can also leave the key in place but set it to ignore the volumes:
    <pre> defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 0</pre>
All I know for sure is that I never entered any 'defaults write' command for this on either of my Macs that run Leopard, & both do show the volumes attached to the Extreme in the Time Machine "Choose Disk" system preference -- but only after the volumes are mounted on those Macs in the Finder.

  • Can use time capsule wifi but can't find time capsule in finder.

I have a 3TB time capsule that I bought about a month ago. I can use the WIFI but all of a sudden I can't find time capsule in finder. How do I locate it?
Thanks in advance for the help.

It is the Mavericks OS usually.
Try a simple reboot of the TC.. that is often enough. No luck..
Try a full network restart in correct order.. ie modem.. wait 2min.. TC .. wait 2min.. clients.
    No luck..
Manually mount the TC using Go, Connect to Server in Finder.
    Type in AFP://TCname.local or AFP://TCIPaddress
where you use the actual network name in place of the TCname.. ie not the name on the TC.. unless it is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. which I do strongly advise. But its network name which is without spaces and no illegal characters which apple recommends you use.. eg apostrophe.
So Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule is not the real network name.
It will become fred_blogs_airport_time_capsule which is a bad name still.
Easier use the IP, eg 10.0.1.1 for TCIPaddress.

  • How can I automount Time Capsul

I have a Time Capsule on my home network that I use, not only for backups (Time Machine on Mac and Norton 360 on PC), but also to store all my media.
I have setup iTunes on my iMac and both my PCs to access the media on the Time Capsule. This works really well. I have no issues at all with my PC's access to the Time Capsule the problem is with my iMac.
On my iMac the only way I can ensure that iTunes can access the media on the Time Capsule is to first open a Finder window and browse the directory tree to my media folder. After I have done this once there is no issue, but if it is not done (for example my wife plugging her iPhone in to synch just after logging in) iTunes says all of the media on the Time Capsule is in accessible. To remedy this I have to then exit iTunes, do the Finder thing and then restart iTunes.
I guess the issue is caused by the iMac not automatically mounting the Time Capsule disk. If this is the case, is there any way that I can configure my iMac to automount the drive so I don't need to open it in Finder before I access it with anything else?
    TIA
    Grant.

    Hi,
Just found this on another forum. It worked for me.
Yeah, that's actually really easy. Time Capsule runs a Samba server and an AFS (Apple File Sharing) server in the background. You can connect to it using the "Connect to Server" feature in the Finder. I assume you've already used the Airport Setup Utility to configure your Time Capsule for file sharing. If not, do that first.
Then, use the Finder's "Connect to Server" feature:
Finder > Go > Connect to Server
Next, enter the address of your Time Capsule's AFS server in this format:
    afs://192.168.1.1
When you click "connect" it will prompt you for a username and password. Use the login information that you entered when you set up your Time Capsule. A finder window will appear, giving you access to the Time Capsule's disk.
Depending on which version of OS X you're running, it may or may not have put an icon on your desktop for the mounted disk. You can fix this by checking the "Connected Servers" checkbox in: Finder > Preferences > General
To make it mount the disk automatically every time you log in, add a login item to your account. Go to:
    System Preferences > Accounts
Click on your user and select the "Login Items" tab. Click the plus sign to add a login item and choose the Time Capsule Volume you just mounted.

  • Is there a way you can see the Time Capsule in OS 9?

I am setting up a time capsule for a client for his PC/Mac Business, he has 2 Windows based PCs that run XP, one intel iMac running Tiger, and one Dual 1.25GHz G4 running an OS9 app that he needs for his business.
Is there a way you can get the time capsule volume to mount inside of OS9???

There isn't even a way to connect to the IP from OS 9, and transfer files to it manually?

  • My mac can't find time capsule, my mac can't find time capsule

my mac can't find time capsule, my mac can't find time capsule

I listed the commands.. that is how you manually mount the disk.. follow exactly the commands I gave you.
In finder use top menu, go, connect to server.
    Type in the following.
AFP://TCname or AFP://TCIpaddress (obviously you replace with the actual name or the actual IP address).
    If that fails..
    try
    SMB://TCname
    Here is the screenshot.
tardis4 being the name of my TC.
It should then ask you for your credentials.
And it should remember them in the keychain and be able to then get TM to connect.

  • Can you use time capsule if you only connect via wi fi, and no ethernet lines?

I'm considering buying a Time Capsule to back up my stuff and use as a router, but I only use wi fi (my fi) via my phone service. Is Time Capsule functional without an ethernet connection, and if so, how functional? Basically, is it the right thing for me within these parameters?
    thanks in advance
    Taythorne

This could be OK, because Time Capsule's operation is quite independent of the router function. Time Capsule does need to live on a LAN with a router somewhere, even if it is not the router itself. As long as that's true, it could work.
But it sounds like there is more research you have to do. Normally, Time Capsule either functions as a router, meaning you give it a direct IP address to a modem; or it functions in bridge mode, meaning you give it the IP address of a router. I don't know how a mi-fi works compared to a cable or DSL modem, but I am guessing you might set up the Time Capsule to connect to it in bridge mode. If that works, everything else should work fine.
Regardless of the setup, Time Capsule should work as long as the Mac can find the Time Capsule and mount the backup volume. An actual Internet connection is not required for that, because it's all within the LAN.

  • Hi can I use Time Capsule 4th generation as a back up at the same time between my iMac and HP PC

HI Just bought a 4th generation Time Capsule and after a bit of trouble, I was able to do the following...
    1. Connect TC to my modem via ethernet cable
    2. Set up my first time Machine from my iMac to Time Capsule
    3. Set up my HP PC via ethernet cable to Time Capsule
    4. Set up HP Printer Scanner to USB port in Time Capsule, can now print from my PC and iMac using the same printer.
    Here is the question...
Can I use Time Capsule (2TB version, not that this should matter, I think) as an external back up for my HP PC, running Windows 7?
I asked this question at Apple Store and they said YES, now I have my doubts as I cannot see Time Capsule as an external drive when I check my PC and computer part there, can see my C drive, D drive (internal backup drive in my PC), E drive (DVD drive) and that is it.
Installed AirPort utility for Windows, have version 5.5 something. I can see TIme Capsule using this at my PC but can I somehow save my HardDrive to Time Capsule, even manually?
Or is the problem that as I started Time Capsule with Time Machine Backup first, it has formatted Time Capsule to support only Apple version, and this is why I cannot see Time Capsule as an external harddrive?
    Any help would be appreciated!
I have already an external HD for my Windows PC, just thought this way I could potentially have all the data in one place and also able to use 1 printer...
    Many Thanks

Remember Apple Names are not fully SMB compatible..
Reset the TC and do the setup with all SMB naming.. ie.. short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
That means TC name eg TC
Wireless name (different for 5ghz) eg TC24ghz and TC5ghz
And hard disk share name.. eg Data
Make sure all passwords also match that convention.. but you can use more characters.. up to 20 or more if you are paranoid. Pure alphanumeric though.
In the file sharing area. set the right workgroup. And it makes life easier turning on the guest account to read and write.
Then in windows explorer simply type
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress .. obviously you change the names with the actual name or IP.

  • Can I use time capsule as nas attached to another wireless router?

my 4 year old time capsule was starting to drop it's connection to the internet intermittently.  so I decided to buy a new linksys ea4500 and that's now setup as my main wireless router.  can I still salvage my time capsule by attaching it to the new linksys router, using ethernet cable, and using it as a NAS drive?  my purpose is to continue using the time capsule as a NAS hdd for time machine backups.
I read somewhere that the time capsule cannot be set up in client mode, so does this mean I can't attach it to non-apple wireless routers?
thanks in advance to anyone who helps

You can connect the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable to any router that you want. The key is to configure the Time Capsule in Bridge Mode.
Here is an example from a recent post a few minutes ago using a 2-Wire router:

  • Can I use Time Capsule for Time Machine and a place to put my iPhoto Library

Can I use Time Capsule for Time Machine and a place to put my iPhoto Library?

Only if you partition the Time Capsure into two partitions, one for TM and one for the iPhoto LIbrary.  But you won't be able to backup that library as it will be on the same drive as the TM backups.
It's not recommended.  An alternative solution is to get another EHD, move the library to it and run it from there. Then TM can backup both your boot drive and the working EHD drive.

I’m trying to follow HP’s instructions to add a driver for HP Color Laserjet CP 1215 which is connected to my Time Capsule. However, in System Preferences I can’t “add” the printer to the print queue because I don’t have a driver and you have to select a driver before the add button becomes active.  Therefore, the Mountain Lion software update doesn’t add driver software for the CP 1215 driver because I was unable to add the printer to the print queue.

This printer doesn't seem to be supported in ML:

You could try the 1515 driver or use the Generic PostScript Printer PPD when adding the printer.

  • Can i use time capsule as external hard drive for both mac and windows

I have a mac book pro, ipad and iphone and ipod and a windows pc
Can i use time capsule as a external hard disk only for all of the above ( including windows ) without the back up activity for mac ?

You cannot access the TC from iOS devices without a browser. eg filebrowser.
Can i use time capsule as a external hard disk only for all of the above ( including windows ) without the back up activity for mac ?
Yes, with the following proviso.. the TC is not able to back itself up.. so if you store files on the TC without backups one day you will discover all your files are gone because of a hard drive failure of the TC. TM also cannot backup TC.. so you will need to buy a proper backup software.
It is also much slower than a real NAS..
And windows can be a bit painful.. especially windows 8.. other versions should work if you spend the time getting everything set right.

  • I have an Apple Time Capsule which I use for back up.  Is there a way I can send my photos to it each time I add new photos?  I guess I am asking if there is a way I can use it as an external hard drive?

I take A LOT of pictures as I am an amerature photographer.  I have used up almost all of the space on my internal hard drive with photos and music.  Is there a way I can use my time capsul as an external hard drive?  If so, can anyone direct me where I can go to figure out HOW to do it?  I appreciate your help!!!!

Buy a large enough external hard drive you can use to store your pictures permanently. Time Capsule is not a good choice for this. Keep your backups separate from your storage needs.

Can I use Time Capsule and LaCie at the same time?

Before I answer your questions, let me first just say thank you so much for your amazing patience and helpfulness.  Whether or not we get to the bottom of this, I am very, very grateful to you.
We will get to the bottom of it, and you're quite welcome.  Don't feel you ought to know all this stuff -- none of us were born with it!
By the way, in answer to your original question, yes, you can use the Time Capsule while backups are running. There's no conflict at all.
    1)  Estimated size of full backup:  205.94 GB
    2)  My LaCie has available:  11.04 GB of 359.95 GB
That's part of the problem right there; 360 GB is a bit small to back up 206 GB.  Ordinarily, a Time Machine drive should be 2-3 times the size of the data it's backing-up, so Time Machine can keep a reasonable "depth" of old backups for you.
It looks like Time Machine is trying to do a fairly large backup, and there just isn't enough room for it.
But something doesn't quite add up.  Time Machine should have deleted all but your most recent backup, trying to make room for the new one.  But that would mean there should only be a bit less than 206 GB on the disk, not 360.
A clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.
