  • Can't mount volume in obt1 - device offline

    Hi,
I am trying to mount my tape volume in Manage: Drives, but keep getting the error:
can't mount volume in obt1 - device offline
OK, so the volume is offline, but my question is how can i get it online? Anyone have any ideas?
    thx.
    S.

The error device offline refers to the tape device not volume. When the device is "in service" it should be able to mount the volume.
In EM, go to the devices page. Insure that the library and drives have a status of "in service" which means the device is logically available to Oracle Secure Backup.

Did you follow the installation and configuration guide and disable the services that get in the way of OSB operations?

  • Can't mount volume

i've got a second hard drive and in doing some copying and the program coming to some error and crashing (no error reported, but it was while using Carbon Copy Cloner and after the copying was finished.
The disk was showing issues and Disk Repair in Disk Utility said it had a Volume Header error that it couldn't fix. when I have the drive in, I can't even boot up (even though it's not my startup drive) It just sits at a blank, gray screen (as if it's about to show the dark gray apple logo and spinning busy thing at the bottom, but it doesn't.
Sounds like this volume header error is causing the problem, but I dont have a clue on hwo to fix it, since I can't even mount the thing.
What if I was able to boot up with the drive's IDE and power plugged in, but the computer won't try to mount it. Instead, I'll mount it using diskutil at the command line. Maybe if I can mount the correct partition, it will 'ignore' the boot partition and I can get it mounted as a temp fix? I just don't know the /dev/xyz path
EDIT: this kind of makes sense to me... if i can go into single user mode on the good drive, plug the second drive in and then manually mount it. if it works, i can run fsck. thoughts?

I tried your advice and some other things. Here's what I've come up with:
    - both hard drives work
    - both can be mounted, but NOT AT THE SAME TIME
    - having both connected (physically) at startup causes the computer to hang at the gray screen and never displaying anything more (no apple logo either). there's a little pin beside where the IDE cable goes in, and both drives are properly connected as Master w/ Slave and Slave, respectively.
    - i can boot into both. in order to make the volume on the 2nd drive, i just had it archive the OS on there and replace it off my OS X cd. I told it to keep the user data for the new installation, but when i got to the login screen, no usernames worked. by default, the clue option wasn't on, so i couldn't even see if it somehow had an old copy of the password file (although i would think that's a stretch)
The only other info I think I've left out is that the second drive's volume still has its original name, so it's not like it somehow got to become literally an exact duplicate of the original, first hard drive's volume (initially, i wondered if that was the case and that the computer thought it was trying to mount the same volume from two locations)

  • Can't mount USB mass storage device [RESOLVED]

I plugged in my iRiver mp3 player in an attempt to transfer files to it from my hard drive and it prompted me what I wanted to do with it (do nothing, open a folder, etc.).  Irrepsective of which alternative I choose, I get the following error:
    Error - Konqueror
A security policy in place prevents the sender from sending this message to the recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volum" member "Mount" error name "(unset)" destination "org.freedesktop.Hal"
Can anyone tell me what this means and what I need to do to fix the problem?

Thanks Bert.  It wasn't working until I realised I had to reboot to effect the new group membership!
Now I've got another problem.  My iRiver shows up with permissions:
    drwxr-xr-x
How do I change them so that every time I connect it to my PC it allows me to write to it?
    It's mounted as /media/IRIVER but I couldn't see a 'media' group in /etc/group.

  • Can't mount volumes

    Hi all,
Last day, i had to disconnect my both external hard drives (firewire 800), so i eject them with finder, then i disconnect them. Both disk were there only to save datas all nights.
But when i repluged them, they are not on finder, even if "disk utility" tells me that bith disk were mounted. I try to unmount and to mount them once, but they are still not on the finder. But Tri-Backup can saves data on them...
How can i show them on finder plz ?
PS : sry for my bad english speaking, as you could see, i am not english or american

    Well,
i ve an Xserve running 10.4.9 server, with an internal Raid 5 (with a PCI internal raid card). From this raid, i ve 4 partitions. On one of these four, i ve my system installed.
Then, on both Firewire 800, i ve 2 external hard drive, used only to save all Data from the four partitions of the Raid 5 (Save with Tri-Backup)
So i usually can see on my Desktop 6 "volumes".
The issue start when i had to unplugg my 2 externals hard drive. When i plugged them back, they didn't appears on the desktop but i could see them in "Disk Utility". i tried to mount them with this application, but they still not appear on desktop. But the Save can be done on them with Tri-Backup.
The second issue, appear next day, cause i just verify my Raid disk with "disk utility", so the application unmount partitions to verify them. But partitions didn't mount on desktop after this test, even if the test was all OK.
So now, i can only see the System partition on the desktop. All other disk have disappeared. But i think it s just a display issue in Finder, cause all disk seems to work good. I can see them with Disk Utility, Tri-backup, and Terminal to (with command "ls /volumes")

  • IVPN on non OSX Server, can't mount volumes remotely via VPN

I recently got iPVN to create a VPN to my home network. My router simply couldn't be used as an end-point.
I have successfully installed it, and it does allow me to connect to my home network remotely. The problem is, whenever I try to mount a volume from a machine within my home network, I am prompted for a userid/password. My userid/password doesn't work.
    Setup:
Home network using private Class C (192.168.1.x). 2009 MacMini is VPN server, and address is manually assigned for this machine (other machines within home network use router as DHCP server). I have forwarded ports 1701, 4500 and 500 (per iVPN instructions) for an L2TP VPN. UDP packets only, and all of these ports are forwarded to the MacMini and it's manually assigned address. My router is configured to use DynDNS if it's address changes, and that works successfully as well (using other services directly to the same MacMini, etc. that DO NOT rely on the VPN).
I can successfully connect to the VPN, and ping machines within the home network successfully. However, I do not see any of the machines via Bonjour (I understand this is an issue with Bonjour and generally all VPNs). So, once connected to the VPN, I try to mount a volume that is shared on the MacMini. I can do this with either form:
afp://192.168.1.x/<volumename> or afp://<machinename>/<volumename> (after setting machine name up in /etc/hosts).
I'm fairly certain I'm getting through, and a mount is attempted, and asks for a userid/password. Same as normal. However, entering my username/password won't let me mount the drive. I keep getting errors indicating the username/password is incorrect, which I know is not the case.
I have tried this with the MacMini firewall on (allowing shared service), and I have tried it with the MacMini firewall off.
What am I missing here? Some additional port that should be forwarded? Open it up for TCP as well as UDP?

I have found a work around that meets my imediate needs, though it doesn't allow me to use autofs functionality.
The work around uses the traditional Unix/Linux approach of automatically mounting a file system or NFS share via fstab at boot time. OS X 10.8 still supports fstab, even though the file is not included in the default installation.
Once mounted, the NFS share appears as if it is part of the normal file system.
The following is only intended for people confident in Unix or Linux systems administration and in using a shell environment via the command line. Do not attempt this if you do not have these skills.
To set up for fstab, do the following within a terminal session:
create an empty directory in your file system that you can use as your mount point for your NFS share:
    sudo mkdir /data/share
    sudo chown root:wheel /data/share
using your favourite editor, create the fstab file (in a terminal type 'man fstab' for details)
    sudo vi /etc/fstab
add similar to the following to /etc/fstab and then save and exit, substituting your own values where appropriate
    # My NFS share
    <your-server>:/<your-share> /data/share nfs  resvport,rw,hard,intr 0 0
    sudo chown root:wheel /etc/fstab
Please note: you may not need the resvport option in the fstab line above. It will depend on your NFS server's requirements.
Once you have done this, reboot your Mac and your NFS share should be mounted at the mount point that you defined.
If not, check your logs to see what went wrong.

  • Server: Can not mount volume

    Hello,
I would like to connect my Mac Book Pro leopard to the Server of the office.
It use to work well before I upgraded to Leopard.
    I usually do:
    ->Go / connect to server
    ->afp://192.168.1.115
Then Mac recognized the server called "datashield"
It give me the choice to select the volume "info" or "share"
When I click one or the other, I have the following message:
->A volume failed to be mounted
Everybody else in the office can connect to the server...
    Does anyone can help me?

    I did run Disk utility.
It appears that everything if fine.
Then it my left panel under "share" i do see now the "datashield"
I can access it and appears the folder "info" and "share"
I can access "info" no problem.
I can not access "share". The message is that the original item can not be found.
We did create "share2". Same problem, the original item can not be found.
I tried the old way: Connect to server....
I have exactly the same message error.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Can't mount volume in shared network

I'm trying to network my Mac so that I can access my PC Win XP.
I can see the name of the pc computer in the finder, under shared.
It is even already listed when I go to Go-Connect to Server.
But when I click Connect button I get a message that says, "Volume could not be Mounted."
I have the Win XP computer name right so I don't know why it won't mount.
Any ideas why this could be happening? I know I'm probably missing an obvious
step but I don't know what it is.
    thank you!!

Forgot to mention that I can access my Mac from the PC, but not the PC from the Mac.
Also, when I try to connect to the PC from the Mac via Connect To Server in the Go menu,
it says that the Volume cannot be mounted because the original can't be found.
I don't know why it's saying this because I thought the volume was the original but it tells me
that it's an alias. I don't know why it says it's an alias.
    Anyone?
    thanks!!

  • Leopard Install problem on iBook G4: Can't mount iBook as FW device anymore

I'll try to very briefly describe my situation and problem, and I appreciate your thoughts ahead of time.
I have a later model iBook G4 (1.2 Ghz, 1.2 GB RAM) that was successfully installed with Leopard about a year ago. It worked great but lately the computer significantly slowed down where basic processes were intolerantly slow. Not having any essential information on it (as I have an iMac Intel as our main home computer), I decided to do an Erase and Install of Leopard onto the iBook, thinking I could just start from scratch. The install was fine and the iBook was very fast again. Ignorantly, I thought if I zapped the PRAM (option-apple, P-R), the computer would run even more efficiently, and that's when I started having start-up problems. It then froze on the gray Apple logo page with the spinning dial. I was too greedy; I should have been content with how it was running to do a random thing like that.
I tried to boot up from my Leopard install disk; I did the restart-option thing and got to the page to choose the HD or the Install Disk, but the install disk never booted.
I read about using the iBook as a firewire device connected to my iMac via the restart-T function. I was able to mount it successfully and reached the point on the installer disk where it came up among other options of drives to install the OS. However, the install disk said it could not install Leopard on the iBook/FW because it needed to be repartitioned as a GUID Partition Drive via Disk Utility. I had no idea what this meant and after exploring options, I decided to erase the iBook HD and see if that enabled me to load Leopard; it didn't help. And then I stumbled across how to make the drive a GUID Partition, and then ala, I was able to start loading Leopard. Unfortunately, about 10 minutes into the load, my iMac went to sleep; I woke it up and realized that the Leopard install had froze. I had to do a hard reset of the iMac, and tried to get back to where I left off, but now I'm unable to get my iBook read as a FW device on the iMac; in other words, the restart-T on the iBook no longer works. When I start the iBook now, there is only a gray screen with no apple logo.
By erasing the iBook HD and incompletely installing Leopard, did I kill the ability to do the restart-T command? Or is it still in there some how? After multiple attempts, it's currently not working.
I have already resigned myself that I've killed it and plan to buy a new Apple laptop, but I thought I'd try y'all for one last try.

    Thanks for the suggestions, Lyssa.
I was able to reformat the drive back to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Apple Partition map via the iMac.
And as you suggested, I put the iMac in Target Disk Mode with the Leopard disk installed. I even got the iBook to recognize the Install Disk; however, upon selecting it, it would freeze at the gray screen with the Apple logo.
I put it away for several hours and decided to try the original Panther install disks. I put the Panter Install Disk #1 into the iBook optical drive and did the restart-option think and selected the install disk. Lo' and behold, I actually got past the apple logo and spinning dial into the start-up screen for installation where I am asked to choose a language! This is the farthest I have got in 24 hours! I proceeded to select English and continue . . . but then the system froze.
After a few more attempts, I am getting less and less progress. It seems that giving the iBook a break from troubleshooting seemed to help; repeated successive attempts only seemed to freeze me at consecutively earlier steps.
I'll try again in the morning with the Panther disks.

  • Cannot mount volume - device offline

    Hi everyone,
I am trying to setup OSB on a Linux box (CentOS).
I could configure the tape library and tape drives as explained in the installation/admin guide but could not get the tape volume mounted. It keeps giving the errors:

It seems that the volume is offline. How can we get it online?

  • Mounted Volumes doesn't show automatically in Finder Window

Hi, is it a preference that allows me to have access directly to my mounted volume (like in OS 10.5) in the Finder windows? Right now, i have to drag them manually so they show next time i mount them. I would like to see the mounted volumes in the Devices section, below my Hard Drive icon.
I know i can access them via the Shared section but thats one more click to do… yeah, i'm lazy
    Thanks
    Ben

Let's take one more shot before we admit defeat...
    Go to Users/yourname/Library/Preferences
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Drag both files to the desktop
    Then, restart.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
    -mj

  • Cannot create tape device

Hi, maybe someone can help me?
My tape device /dev/rmt/0n was 20Gb in size even though it had no tape in it, after a failed backup.
This was after filling up my hard-drive to 100% capacity, so I decided to delete /dev/rmt/0n and recreate using "devfsadm" or "boot -r" but neither of these commands worked!
Now I cannot connect the tape drive at all as I cannot create /dev/rmt/0n.
Does anybody know how this can be fixed?
    Thanks

My tape device /dev/rmt/0n was 20Gb in size even
though it had no tape in it, after a failed backup.Sound like you mis-specified the destination of your backup and it literally went to a file "/dev/rmt/0n" (overwriting your device file) instead of to tape.
Please run 'drvconfig' then 'tapes'. (Or do a reconfiguration reboot.) This should recreate your device name.

  • Can I prevent mounted volume Finder windows opening on startup?

I look after a studio with about 10 Macs, some of which are running OSX 10.4.11. We automatically mount 3 network volumes containing client data at startup. The Finder always opens a window for each volume but I want to prevent this from happening.
In Finder preferences I can prevent the volume icons from appearing on the desktop but the Finder still opens a window for each one at startup when the volumes are mounted..
How can I control this action?

This is a hack, but you can try to use xtool to close the windows. I place the following script in my login items. You may want to put in a delay of some sort.
    You may also try iKey.
I use iKey to remap the keys. It has a little more function then youpi key. For many years, I used youpi key before switching to iKey.
You might like iKey/youpi key. I have my frequently used applications set to f keys. The same f key starts an application and switches to the application.
Youpi key is free. It works fairly well for me in MAC OS 10.4 although not officially supported. There is a commercial version you can buy, called iKey.

This applescript could use some clean up. I do not think you need the first two lines.
do shell script "/usr/sbin/system_profiler SPDisplaysDataType | grep 'Resolution'" -- get info
tell the result to set {DisplayWidth, DisplayHeight} to {word 2, word 4} -- get resolution
--move mouse {DisplayWidth div 2, DisplayHeight div 2} -- center mouse
    move mouse {670, 13} --sound
    click mouse
move mouse {673, 96} --sound level
    click mouse
    move mouse {555, 282} -- center mouse
    click mouse
First, there is the XTools scripting addition, which will give AppleScript the ability to move the mouse.
      http://www.lestang.org/osax/XTool/
      XTool-2.0-src.dmg.tgz
      Installation :
Drag XTool.osax from insite the image to one of the following locations (create the directory if it does not exist) :
      a : ~/Library/ScriptingAdditions/
      b : /Library/ScriptingAdditions/
      c : /System/Library/ScriptingAdditions/
I have it in directory /System/Library/ScriptingAdditions/
My other two directories do not exit: ~/Library/ScriptingAdditions/ &
         /Library/ScriptingAdditions/
.    Next, you will need to place a script application into your login items (System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items) that will move the mouse when you log in:
This script will give you the location of the pointer. I assigned it to a function key with iKey. So, place the cursor of the x then press the function key to get where you need to click.
do shell script "/usr/sbin/system_profiler SPDisplaysDataType | grep 'Resolution'" -- get info
tell the result to set {DisplayWidth, DisplayHeight} to {word 2, word 4} -- get resolution
set {xWidth, yHeight} to position of the mouse
    display dialog ¬
      "DisplayWidth= " & DisplayWidth & ¬
      "  DisplayHeight=" & DisplayHeight & return & ¬
      "  xWidth=" & xWidth & ¬
      "  yHeight=" & yHeight
--move mouse {DisplayWidth div 2, DisplayHeight div 2} -- center mouse
You could try sending command + w to the finder. You can get the idea ... See this example, some work needed by reader!!!:
    on open dropped_items
-- Write a message into the event log.
      log "  --- Starting on " & ((current date) as string) & " --- "
-- set see to alias "Macintosh-HD:Users:mac:Desktop:app.html"
      -- set dropped_items to {see}
      set the_app to "Safari"
      repeat with dropped_item_ref in dropped_items
--set UrlBase to "xzzx FILE://" & POSIX path of dropped_item_ref
         --display dialog UrlBase
         -- Activate
         activate application the_app
         -- Open the URL
         tell application the_app
            open dropped_item_ref
            -- print dropped_item_ref
            tell application "System Events"
               tell process the_app
                  delay 3
-- click menu item "Print..." of menu "File" of menu bar 1
                  keystroke "p" using command down
                  delay 1
                  keystroke return
                  delay 10
                  keystroke "w" using command down
               end tell
            end tell
            --quit
         end tell
      end repeat
    end open
