Can't move files - creates alias instead

When I try to move a file/folder elsewhere, it creates and alias instead of moving the file.
Yes, the folder I'm working under is in the Applications directory. I understand that this was something new added to 10.7
The problem is, I'm working with MAMP and my localhost folder (htdocs) is placed by default in Applications/MAMP/htdocs. After developing a site I'm needing to move the files to a new folder on my computer for archives. This seems to work sometimes, but mostly an alias is created.
How do I get around this issue and successfully move files from my htdocs folder?

If you hold the Command key down while moving, it will override the "Make Alias" automation and move the file instead. I don't know of any way to turn this "feature" off permanently, unfortunately, so you will have to hold Command each time you want to move a file of any type out of the Applications folder (or sub-folders).

  • In Finder, trying to move files creates copies instead

This has happened to me on two different drives recently; on the internal HD of one computer, and on an external drive as well. When you drag a file from one folder to another, and both folders are on the same drive, this is supposed to move the file. But instead, Finder makes a copy, leaving the original as well. Doing this enough with large video files quickly eats up lots of space with these accidental duplicates. I'm perplexed ... any idea what could be going on?

I have the same problem; and the permissions are "read and write"  for all files ...

  • Boot Camp Assistant: "Can't move files"

    Hi,
I'm trying to create a 500GB partition with BCA and it keeps giving me the "Can't move files, back up data, format, etc." error.
I've currently got a 2 TB HD; the first time I attempted this I had about 633GB of data on the drive, so about ~1350GB free. I received this error so I bought iDefrag and let it run for a long time (~14 hours or so) until it was finished, and again I received the error.
(Prior to defragging I verified and repaired permissions through Disk Utility)
So I transferred a 110GB file over to my external drive, deleted off ~150-180GB of movies and TV shows (which are safely stored on another computer), culled some other stuff, did a verify + repair permissions, and now I'm only using 378GB of a 2TB disk.
It still won't work. I really, really, don't want to format and restore my info.
Any idea's how I can get this working? Thanks

Clone your drive and erase restore
iDefrag has to be run from a CD you burn, or from another hard drive. I definitely favor always having bootable clone backups for OS X.
Has to not have locked files where installers can place there
Boot CAmp Assistant should have iDefrag capability, but it doesn't (should also by now just be part of Disk Utility too).
Partitioning relies on not just free space, but contiguous and unfragmented.

  • Importing movie files created with SONY HDR-TG5

Having trouble importing movie files created with this camera. Have had success importing direct from the camera using streamclip, but struggling with old files imported from our PC. These files have these two extensions; .modd and .m2ts

    Eric:
Thank you. MPEG Slipstream worked great.
Do you know if there is software available that would let me see what is in/copy the files in the Sony folder so that I might be able to copy the disk directly instead of having to copy the files off of it with Handbrake? Would having the QT add-on for the MPEG-2 playback component be helpful?
    Thanks again

  • Can I move files from one caralog to another?

Can I move files from one caralog to another?

    No. you cannot.
This, among many other reasons, is why multiple catalogs are not recommended.
(You could import the photo into another catalog, and delete from the first catalog ... and without first using the command File->Write Tags, you will lose your tags, captions and other metdata; version sets, stacks, album/collection membership are lost in any case)

  • Can you move files back and forth between an iPad and a PC using iTunes?

If I read this article correctly, http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4094 I should be able to connect my iPad to my PC, fire up iTunes and then on the Apps tab in iTunes I should be able to click on an app, Pages for example and then just drag files onto the Pages Documents column from a Windows Explorer window.
This is great.  I was hoping to use DropBox but it is such a hassle I don't know why people are so thrilled with DropBox on iPad.  If I can just move files back and forth using iTunes that should be fairly easy.  I wish there was a way to just upload my files to iCloud from my PC but the iCloud control panel app for Windows only seems to connect Outlook, Photostream and Bookmarks. I want to be able to just carry my iPad and not have to deal with a computer.
I thought that they said that you didn't need to have a computer to have an iPad.  I guess if you have a computer and then GET an iPad its a different story, unless you have a Mac of course.
Anyway my question is: can you move files back and forth between a PC and an iPad using just iTunes?

I still need to do some trial and error testing with DropBox and my iPad.  But can I link my iPad to my DropBox account so that I can always see the files on DropBox when I open Pages on my iPad?  I just want one place to store my documents, and iCloud doesn't seem to be up to the task when it comes to opening a fil;e, editing it and then saving it back to iCloud.  I just want a networked storage location that works like a networked drive on my LAN.
I realize that hollywood and the music industry are up in arms about file sharing on the Cloud which is why so many things are made more difficult than they need to be.

How can I move files in FileAppPro to Adobe to open?

You will need to use the "Open In" functionality that is provided by FileAppPro. It appears that to do this, you do a "Long Press" on the file in their file list.

  • Can't move files, only duplicate

    hello,
i have some files at the root level of my laptop drive and i want to move them, but they only copy into their new locations (duplicating) they don't simply move with the gong sound. i'm wondering why. does it have to do with permissions or something?
    thanks
    max

A 'move' is just shorthand for a 'copy to new location X, and delete from old location Y'.
You can't delete something outside of your user account without Admin privileges. I haven't tested this, but for that reason I'd imagine you can't move files in the root directory. Copy them then delete them manually, supplying your Admin password when prompted.

  • I can't move files to trash

I can't move files to the trash without the finder wanting an administrator password and then the file is immediately deleted.  This just strarted a few days ago.

Click once on the hard drive icon - top right - and type command + i (both keys together).
This is the bottom half of what you will see:
    1. Click the padlock and authenticate with your password.
    2. Your Name should have the Privilege to Read and Write. If it does not click on whatever is there, and change it.
    3. Click on the gear wheel and select "Apply to enclosed items".
There will be a message, say OK, and let it continue. This will take some time.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

    Hi,
Troubleshooting a start up script can be difficult. There are some third party programs that also keep logs of start up programs, however for Firefox this may be different.
Is Firefox a startup program? [http://www.winxptutor.com/msinfo32.htm]
Its also possible to check the Web developer tools for any scripts in a page: [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Debugger]
In the control panel there is also Administrative tools to view event logs, but this may be something a local technician can walk you through.

Is there a way to load a movie file created using FlattenMovie() function ? I tried with NewMovieFromFile() , everything went well but the movie video track somehow had been corrupted.
The thing is I could nicely convert the original Movie data structure using an export component. But the one I recreated after saving disk did not converted well ( It produced only sound ). Plz help I seached all over the documents to unerstand 'How to use flattened files' but could not.

  • Help! I can't move files from my MacBook to my external hard drive!

    Hey all..
I can't move files from my MacBook to my 40GB hard drive! Whenever i try to do that the com will reply that i can't move the files because the hard drive cannot be modified. This never happened before and how can it be solved?
    Appreciate all answers thanks..

What filesystem is your external hard drive formatted as?
You can check this with the program called Disk Utility.
My guess is that it is formatted as NTFS, the default filesystem for windows XP. Mac OS X only supports read-only access to NTFS-formatted drives.
Reformatting, and with it erasing everything on your drive, to another filesystem would be a solution if this is the case.
Google recently released MacFUSE which should allow read-write support to ntfs-drives. Not recommended for the un*x-unexperienced, though.
