Can't move items to trash.

I can't move items to my trash can on my desktop.  I have to right click and click on "move to trash" then I am promted for my password before the item is trashed.

Is this Trash can really on the Desktop, or the one in the Dock?

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • I can't move emails to trash...I read comments

I can't move emails to trash...instructions on support say go to "advanced"--my ipad doesn't have any advanced on it?

Where are you looking for it ? If you go into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and select the email account on the right-hand side of that screen, and then tap the Account line (with your email account name and an arrow to the right of it) at the top of the that screen. Then tap Advanced at the bottom of the next screen, then Deleted Mailbox, and under On The Server tap the 'Trash' folder so that it gets a tick against it - then come out of that series of popups by tapping on the relevant buttons at the top of them and then see if you can delete emails.

  • Script that moves items to trash after importing to iTunes

    Hi,
I have zero experience in this, all I have done is just from having googled stuff, so please be patient if I'm asking stupid questions. I have tried searching the forum first but I can't find the answer to this question.
I download music from various (LEGAL) websites and I don't want to have to manually move it into iTunes. My aim is that every time an .mp3 file is downloaded into my downloads folder, it is automatically moved into my iTunes music library and added to a 'downloaded' playlist, then deleted from my downloads folder.
This has taken me ages because after I got it working I did an iTunes update which ruined it all. I tried to edit the offending actions but ended up just downgrading iTunes to the previous version via Time Machine.
I am using OS X version 10.6.7 and iTunes 10.2.1
The point I am at now is that it is all working, except that the files are not moved to the trash at the end, so every time it runs it adds the new file plus all the previous files again. Please can someone help me modify my script or my automator application so that this will happen.
Also, is it possible to have the automator application only run when music files are downloaded? Because at the moment it runs every time I download anything at all.
Here is what I have done:
I have set up a folder action so that this script is attached to my downloads folder:
on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving added_items
              tell me
do shell script "open -a /Users/Louisa/Documents/Workflows/justdownloadstoplaylist.app"
              end tell
    end adding folder items to
Then I have saved this Automator workflow as the application justdownloadstoplaylist.app
    *Get specified Finder items*
    Louisa>Downloads
    *Get Folder Contents*
    (Repeat for each subfolder found)
    *Import Files into Itunes*
    (Existing playlist - "downloaded")
    *Move Finder items to Trash*
    Thank you for your help.

Sorry, there was an error with my workflow in that saving to the variable should have come after filtering the items:
Folder Action receives files and folders added to Downloads
Get Folder Contents { Repeat for each subfolder found } -- in case a folder was added
Filter Finder Items { File extension is mp3 } -- just get mp3 files
Set Value of Variable { Variable: Original Items } -- save the filtered mp3 files for later
    Import Files into iTunes { Existing playlist Downloaded }
Get Value of Variable { Variable: Original Items } (Ignore Input) -- get back the mp3 files
    Move Finder Items to Trash
If you are using your application in a situation where it is already getting items passed to it (e.g. dropping items onto the application, or using a Service or Folder Action), adding an action at the beginning that gets the same items will result in doubling up the items in your input list.  If you are getting confused about what is getting passed to your application, you can use a Choose from List action at the beginning of your workflow to show the items.
If you just saved your workflow as an application, dropping items onto it will pass them to your workflow, otherwise you will need to add statements to your folder action script to tell the workflow to open items passed to the folder action.  As I mentioned in my earlier post, you won't need to use your folder action script or do anything else to get items passed to your workflow if it is created using the Folder Action template.

  • I can't move files to trash

I can't move files to the trash without the finder wanting an administrator password and then the file is immediately deleted.  This just strarted a few days ago.

Click once on the hard drive icon - top right - and type command + i (both keys together).
This is the bottom half of what you will see:
    1. Click the padlock and authenticate with your password.
    2. Your Name should have the Privilege to Read and Write. If it does not click on whatever is there, and change it.
    3. Click on the gear wheel and select "Apply to enclosed items".
There will be a message, say OK, and let it continue. This will take some time.

  • Can't move photos to trash

If I try to send a photo from a folder to the trash, it is moved to the “Unallocated” folder. Drag and drop or sending from the unallocated folder do not work as well. However, photos can be moved to the trash folder from the library (“Photos”). But it is not feasible to search for a specific photo in this folder.
Repairing permissions, rebuilding thumbnails, repairing the database, and rebuilding the database did not help.
What can I do (iPhoto 9.4.2 under OSX 10.7.5)?

Deleting Photos from an iPhoto Library:
1 - from an Event or the Photos mode: select the photo(s) and use the Delete key to move the photos to the trash bin. Then empty the iPhoto Trash bin as follows:
2 - from an album, smart album, book, slideshow, card, etc.: select the photo(s) and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move the photos to the trash bin.  Then empty the trash bin as above.
NOTE: deleting a photo from an album, slideshow, book, etc., with only the Delete key only deletes that photo from that item. Deleting a photo from an Event deletes ALL occurances of that photo in the library.

  • How can I move items from my Nano to my computer?

I hate the new iTunes. It used to show what my iPod Nano Gen 6 had in the library and I could easily move items in and out, but now all I can do is add items to the iPod, but not remove.

See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • [SOLVED] Can't move files to trash in my ext-4 partition

    Hi,
I know that it must have a silly solution but I cannot make it work. I've searched in the forum but I haven't found exactly the same issue.
My HDD has an ext-4 partition for /, a swap partition and another ext-4 partition called "Archivos" for my files (not home, home is just as a folder in / ).
I can make files and folders in the Archivos partition but when I try to move them to the trash in pcmanfm it says that files can't be moved to trash and if do I want to erase them instead.
At boot time the Archivos partition is mounted in fstab with these options:
    UUID=bb8eb4ea-5b9c-4275-bad3-f64bcf581e1d /run/media/vane/Archivos ext4 rw,relatime 0 2
I've tried to add uid=1000 (my user id) after rw,relatime but I get a message at booting that says "uid=1000 option is not recognized" and stops booting.
What can I do in order to get the trash can work in the Archivos ext-4 partition?

bpont wrote:I found this (old) thread because I was having a similar problem, but with a btrfs partition.  I followed Foucault's advice on post #4, but it didn't work initially.  Then I went into the options for PCManFM and unchecked the "Erase files on removable media instead of trash can creation" and that did the trick.  If the same solution works for you, consider marking this thread as solved.
Maaaaaaannnn (or woman, I don't know ), hahaha! What a silly solution!!! And I got it right first time. I can't believe that this could have a solution as easy as this one. In fact this should not impress me too much since the first sentence I wrote in this thread was "I know that it must have a silly solution but..." hahaha.
Since it's not the computer I use to use I already forgot about this after such a long time. Just tried and worked perfectly.

  • Aperture can't move files to trash

My photos are on networked external hard drive, and I have the folder on the drive mounted. However, when I try to delete a photo from this drive within Aperture, I get a message saying "Cannot Move Files to Trash" "You don't have access to the Trash on the master files' volume."
But if I go to that file via finder, I have no trouble deleting it. And getting the info for that volume shows I have read/write privileges.
Any suggestions on how Aperture can gain access to the trash on this volume?
    Thanks,
    Rod
    20" iMac intel & 15" Powerbook & Windows XP   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It doesn't sound like it's an issue with the files themselves, but rather with the trash.
I haven't seen it, but I can see how that could occur. Each volume tends to have its own Trash folder. It's hidden, typically called .Trashes and at the root of the hard drive. I have had Trash-related issues outside of Aperture in the past (likely of my own doing). The issue with problems like these it it's nigh impossible to establish cause and effect… you could do something and not notice the problem for days or even weeks, in a completely un-related way.
I doubt that "Repair Permissions" is responsible for the fix, unless the files were on your boot volume. RP has no effect outside of a boot volume.

  • Can't move pictures to trash

I can't move pictures to the trash (in the Source side-bar). It's like the Trash 'album' is readonly.
When I try to move pictures to the trash by dragging & dropping, the picture(s) disappear from the album but nothing shows up in the trash. BTW, the green + circle disappears when I hover over the Trash.
When I try to move pictures to the trash using the delete key, the picture(s) disappear from the album but nothing shows up in the trash.
After either of these actions, the 'Empty Trash' remains grayed out and the pictures remain in the library. I've tried rebuilding my library (with all options checked), but this doesn't help.

    Hi there,
It will only remove the photo from the album.
You will need to find original photo in your library and delete this. It will then delete the photo in library as well as the copy in any album. When sure, you should be able to empty trash...

  • Can't move items to the trash, change permissions?

I was copying some files to a USB jump drive while I reformatted my girlfriends PC including her 'Favorites' and her personal folder. Now these are both locked on my drive and I cannot unlock them in the 'Get Info' so I can't being them to the trash. Is ther anyway to unlock these or change permissions. I tried playing with the 'chown' unix command but am not sure quite how to do it. Any help? Thanks

If you've got the problem I think you have, take a look at this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6061352
Are the files still on the USB drive? If there is nothing else on it that you need the simplest solution is to reformat it. Otherwise you'll have to hook it up to a Windows machine and follow the instructions provided by Apophis.

  • Can't move items from one box to another

I have set up a separate mailbox for a certain list with some rules to sort new mail to this box. However, there are from the past a number of incoming items in my Inbox which are not sorted to this new box and I want to move them manually. Usually I can just select the items and drag them to the desired mailbox, but in this case I have selected the items and when I drag them to the new mailbox they just spring back. In other words they can't be moved. What can be happening? It worked before and doesn't work now. Help?

I solved my own problem. Sorry I can't take it down. I did a dumb thing and got confused about which box was in the foreground at the time. Duh! Oh well...thanx anyway.

  • Can't move items in timeline PPCC

When I attempt to move audio clips in my timeline, I'm finding that I'm not allowed to.  For example, audio 1 contains an audio clip.  Its placed in the middle of the timeline and I'm trying to sync it up to the video.  The timeline will not allow me to move this item unless I zoom all the way out.  Sometimes I have to try and drag it to create a new track before I can move it.  Half the time this doesn't work either.  Now, this is happening on all of my sequences and I have about 30 to do.

I don't have any answers for you, but you have company: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5930692#5930692.

  • Can only move items in 1/4 inch steps??

Hi folks - first off just want to share the fact that Reports Builder can sometimes be one of the most annoying pieces of software I've ever used. :o)
With that in mind.. I'm trying to edit an existing report, just need to swap some fields round, however when I pick up and drag the fields around (confine & flex both off), the items only move in quarter-inch chunks, ie. I can't accurately reposition the items.
If I create a new dummy report, draw a box on it and try moving it round, it's fine.
There's obviously a property somewhere in the problem report that I'm missing, I'm sure it's something very simple, I do recall in the back of my mind coming across this before a few years back but it's late in the day now and I honestly can't remember what it is.
    Does anyone have any ideas???
    thanks in advance. :o)
