Can't name/rename folders

Very strange - I started a new folder, but when I tried to change the name from Untitled, I couldn't. It highlights and the cursor changes to text entry, but it will neither delete the name or enter text. So I went to so existing folders to see if I can change names - no dice. I also tried to do it via the get info box, but same thing. What's up? Folders aren't locked, permissions say read & write, haven't done any system updates the past couple of days. What's the problem and how do I fix it? Thanks!

how do I fix it?
The cause is a bug. The solution is to upgrade to 10.5.
But meanwhile, you will have to restart Finder.
The simplest way to quit Finder is to press the option key while right-clicking on the Finder icon in the Dock, and choose the Relaunch menu item.
Read here for more about restarting Finder.

  • Can't name new folders or rename existing folders in Finder

I can't name new folders or rename existing folders in Finder. I've never had this happen before. I tried both using the new folder icon and choosing "new folder" from the actions icon. The only unusual thing I'm doing now is working with Spaces enabled, but I can't imagine that this has anything to do with the problem. Selecting and hitting "return" doesn't allow me to either erase existing text or overwrite with new text. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I just created a new folder and couldn't change its name. Finder would give me "more info" (permissions certainly not an issue) and allow me to delete (and then recreate) the folder, but not change its name.

  • Can no longer rename folders in Launchpad

When I first installed Lion, I could rename folders I made in Launchpad just fine.  Since updating to 10.7.1 I can no longer rename folders.  Is anyone else having this problem?

Click on the folder to open it, then click on the name (in the top left) to edit the name.
It sometimes happens that there is no response to a click on the name of the folder, if that happens, open Activity Monitor and Quit the "Dock" process. It will restart automatically within a second.
After that, try to rename the folder again, it should work.

  • I can't name/rename folder tracks

This is just a quickie — I can't seem to name/rename folder tracks as I can instrument, bus, aux etc. tracks by clicking on its name in the respective Object boxes. This doesn't seem to be set-up specific as the same problem occurs on both my PowerBook and my MacBook. Is this a known bug? Is there a work around?
Note that I have aaaaaaaaaall the updates.
    Thanks fellahs

    Hello d. reamonn
You can name/rename folders exactly like you can tracks.
There are two possibilities: Hold down OPTION key and click on the word Folder. A box will appear and you type in the name you want.
Or for a second naming of the folder do the same operation with COMMAND and click

  • Randomly can't name new folders

About once a month or so, the finder randomly stops allowing me to name any new folder I create. The folder name will be selected, but nothing happens when I try to type in a new name, and it just stays 'untitled,' even if I click off of it and reselect it. I can only rename it if I go under Get Info. The only thing that seems to fix this problem is restarting my machine. This time around the problem progressed-- first I couldn't name any folders and now all of a sudden I can't open Get Info w/ the keyboard command. I can only open it by going to the menu. Any ideas what is causing this wackiness??

  • Cannot rename folders in SMB share using Column view

I connect to an Ubuntu SMB server and files and folder access worked perfectly under 10.5.8.

  • Can't rename folders on Snow Leopard Server

I have 10.6.8 Snow Leopard Server running on a new Mac Mini server. Attached I have a Pegasus Raid storing all my files. I have a sharepoint set up for every project we work on but a couple act strangely. Users can create and delete folders but can not rename them once created. In order to rename they must drag the folder onto the desktop, rename and then replace the folder on the server. All permissions are set up identical to the other sharepoints which work fine. I have had a couple so-called "experts" look at the permissions in both the terminal and Server Admin. Everyone seems stumped. Any ideas?

Thanks for the input but I finally soved the problem. Here is what I found...
Although I had given users/group the ALLOW/FULL CONTROL premission with a sharepoint, I discovered that in Server Admin if you double-click on the User or Group name under the ACL permissions that a drop down box appears. This box allows you to fine tune the ACL but it appears that by default all of the boxes are not checked even though I granted the user Full Control. After checking all of the boxes I was able to create and rename folders in my share as expected.
This also had an similar effect if I denied Full Control. Some of the boxes remained unchecked and it left holes in my system where denied users could still access some files. Again by checking all boxes these holes were closed.
Does anyone know how to change the default so that all boxes are checked when assigning the Full Control permission?

  • Can't read big name of folders by script

It happens once in a while that the images we had edit and are ready to save give us an error saying that the File I want to saveAs can't be found.
So, in this case, we had to save manually each image, rename the folder to a shorter name mannually, re-open the images and apply the script again.
    This solve the problem.
To avoid this, or at least to warn automatically that some encoded folderName.length is too big.
I HAVE FOUND THAT ON WINDOWS7 THE ERROR BEGINS ON FOLDERS LENGTH >188
I had the ideia of making a 'thumbsPreview' event on Bridge where a big folder warning would be generated so I could add a button on bridge where automatically we rename that folder to only the first 188 caracters. But this is for Bridge forum. I leave here only the idea.
    PROBLEM:
So, on photoshop, reading a folder name larger then 188 caracter encoded name by script, give us a shorter version of the real name.
    This is an real example:
Real big folder name of an active image ( encoded length = 211):
    _d_10416472-ACNE.ASKIN.DARK.BROWN.COGNAC.Calf.Leather.BASICON.BS08ANCORA.COCCIO.Cotton.Spa ndex.Elastane.Calf.Leather.Calsssf.Leather.FS0526G8WF0EQW.F0EQW.Cotton.SW.Cotton.Spandex.E lastane.Cotton.Spandex.Elastane
Name red by script ( encoded length = 12):
    _D_104~1.LEA
    Resume:
So, the result is an error on saving the file to a folder that doesn't exist ('_D_104~1.LEA').
The problem is that if I cant read it, I can't rename it by script to force it to rename to 188 length.
I have to use bridge and do it mannually
    Middle prevent sollution:
Anyway of detecting that a folder name has been shortened by script so I could use that to make an specific alert???
    I have tryed by I couldn't.
    Curiosity:
By script I can easly create() new folders larger then 188 length name! But then I can't use them - not even to put files in (error)...

    Thanks Michael
So that means I can't have too much folder/subFolder/subFolder/... organization.
I was trying to detect when a path is larger then 255, at the moment I try to saveAs. To do so, I have put a try catch when execute the action and on the error code I manage to do this:
    - read the name truncated of the last folder on the path (it is, in my case, allways the larger one);
    - I don't know if I could trust on this: if the end of the truncated name is == ".LEA" then i means that the folder must be shortened and give the user that precise information.
    Can I trust this?

  • I can't rename folders in Launchpad anymore

    I'm running OS 10.7.3
When I first installed, I could rename folders (I know how to do this).
Now, I can no longer change the folder names.
I searched these discussion topics and found some posts about quitting the Dock process and trashing Dock prefs. I've done all these but there's still no success.
    Any ideas...?

    PS:
I searched some more and found a pref pane called Launchpad Control that was helpful:
    http://chaosspace.de/launchpad-control/
I find it disturbing though that the functionality has disappeared in the Finder. Hopefully this bug can be fixed in 10.7.4

  • Can't change names of folders or drives on desktop

All of a sudden my powers to change names of files and folders on desktop has been taken away from me, I'm stuck with untitled folder 1,2,etc..

    Hi Rugger,
Sounds like a permissions thing. Try using Disk Utility. It's here:
    Applications/Utilities.
Launch DU, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, then click
Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished, Quit Disk Utility.
Reboot and see if that makes a difference.
And some tips about naming or renaming folders ... etc.
    Changing the names of items
You can easily change the name of a file, folder, or disk on your computer.
IMPORTANT: To avoid problems using Mac OS X or applications on your computer, don't move or change the names of folders that came with your system (such as the Library folder or your home). You should also not change the names of applications or items associated with specific applications. If you accidentally change the name of an installed item and you experience problems, you can change the name back.
Locate the item you want to rename on your desktop or in a Finder window.
Click the item to select it, then click the name. The name is highlighted and you will be able to edit it.
Type the new name and press Return.
Some document names have a file extension, such as ".txt" or ".jpg." If you change the name of a file and delete the extension, some applications may no longer recognize the file. To ensure the file can be recognized by the application that created it, change only the part of the name that comes before the extension, or open the file using the appropriate application, then save the file with a new name.
You cannot change the name of an item in the Finder window's sidebar. You must locate the item on your desktop or in a Finder window to highlight and change the name.

  • I have a folder from today that won't let me change its name. I can change the other folders just fine. I do it routinely... any ideas what I screwed up?

I'm as a loss. I don't understand why today's folder "2014-06-06" won't let me add "_Kim" to the end. I do it will all my folders since I download from a couple of cameras.

  • Can't delete or rename folders when I FTP

    Hi
Hope someone can help me with this!!
When I connect to a webserver using FTP with dreamweaver, it
won't let me delete or rename any folders.
It's nothing to do with the persmissions becasue the user has
full permissions and can delete or rename when I FTP using a
different client. Any ideas?? Is there a setting that I am
    missing??

    Do you run a mac?
I had this problem at the last company that I worked for. I
    was on a Mac
then; not sure if that had anything to do with the problem.
I could sometimes connect with Dreamweaver but I could always
    connect with
another ftp client. At one point, when the problems started,
    I used
Dreamweaver to rename folders on the server. Instead of
    creating them on my
own system, I created files and renamed folder directly on
    the server
through DW. After that, I had problems. At one point, all the
    files got
changed so that they were locked down.
Occasionally, I thought I isolated the problem. At times,
    recreating the
entire site worked. At other times, it helped for the server
    to be rebooted.
At times I thought it was because of the firewall or content
    filter that was
doing it. I think it was a Windows Server that I had the
    problems with. I
don't remember if the other servers gave me problems.
I never really resolved it. Now I'm at a different job and I
    have but a
passing interest in what it might be.
Sorry I don't have anything solid.

The TIme Machine volume does not have that checkbox.
I think the issue is with your Finder...
Go to Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences trash these files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

I wonder if we haven't misunderstood what you were asking for. Could it be that you have not a huge file, but just a huge list of names in many small files. If that's the case, you should rather use the following script instead of the previous one.
Since this script does not rename the files, make a backup of your files before running it.
set theFolder to choose folder -- the folder containing your text files
    tell application "Finder"
set theNames to name of files of theFolder whose name extension is "txt"
    end tell
    set theTextFiles to {}
set theFolderPath to POSIX path of theFolder
    repeat with thisName in theNames
copy theFolderPath & thisName to the end of theTextFiles
    end repeat
    repeat with thisFile in theTextFiles
set F1 to open for access thisFile
        set theText to read F1
        close access F1
set theParagraphs to paragraphs of theText
set bigList to (a reference to theParagraphs)
        set theNewParagraphs to {}
set bigNewList to (a reference to theNewParagraphs)
        repeat with X in bigList
            set P to offset of " - " in X
            if P = 0 then
                set Y to X
            else
                set Y to text (P + 3) through -1 of X & " - " & text 1 through (P - 1) of X
            end if
copy Y & return to the end of bigNewList
        end repeat
