Can't network OSX 10.5.8 to OS 8 machine

I recently upgraded my Power PC G5 from Panther to Leopard 10.5.8 and I can no longer network to my old computer running OS 8. I have the computers connected via an Ethernet hub. With Panther, the G5 recognized the OS 8 machine on the network. But with Leopard 10.5.8, when I try to "connect to server" the OS machine is not available as an option on the network. On the older machine, I have the TCP/IP settings as: Connect via Ethernet, Configure using DHCP server. The G5 is connected to the Ethernet, and also configured using DHCP. These settings worked when I was on Panther. Do I have to change something to get 10.5.8 to find the OS8 machine on the network?

There is no more support for AppleTalk File Sharing beyond 10.3 Panther, and AppleTalk Printer support disappears after 10.5 Leopard.
There is nothing you can add to 10.5 to restore AppleTalk File Sharing. As Niel has suggested, OS 8 can share its files with ShareWay IP. If your older Mac could run OS 9, it includes a version of ShareWay IP.
You can share 10.5 files From an OS 8 system \[actually as early as 7.5.3 with a few updates] by starting from the OS 8 computer and using the ( Server IP Address ) button that appears in the Chooser AppleShare pane. Enter the IP Address of the 10.5 Mac and click Connect.
The login screen that appears is sent by the Mac OS X Mac. The username is filled in automatically by the OS 8 or 9 Mac, by automatically entering the OS 8 or 9 Sharing Name. It is almost always WRONG. The OS 8 or 9 Mac fills the password field with a FIXED number of bullets -- it has no idea how long the password is. Enter a username and password that is valid for the Mac OS X Mac and you should be connected.

  • Can I network OSX with an OS 8.6 (G3) ?

Hi and hope you folks can offer some advice.
I have a small office and recording studio. We
use multiple macs. My office one is a Beige G3 which
i've never had reason to upgrade beyond
OS 8.6. I happen to still prefer certain apps which are unstable beyond that OS.
That said, realities dictate that I need to put an OSX machine in the office to replace this "classic" -- tho
i'd still like to keep the older machine online and ideally, networked.
RIght now I have this PMac, a dual-bootable studio G4 (MDD model), a G4 sawtooth (OS9) and a couple laptops (OSX Panther) coexisting peacefully via ethernet router network for WEB access.
My goal is A) to replace the office computer with a current generation machine running OSX (Panther or Tiger)..
    B) To standardize on OSX for my Studio computers (which I normally stay in OS 9 with) and
    C) ideally, network them all for both file-sharing AND web access-sharing.
How i might keep the G3 pmac networked, so that if/when i need to use older apps, i could do it and still be able to transfer files to the other computers/systems and do printer sharing.
Thanks much for any thoughts and opinions,
    Mike in Mich.

    1. You can use the instructions in this article to enable file sharing on a Mac OS 8.6 computer.
    2. Sharing the Internet connection should be automatic when multiple computers are plugged into a router which is connected to the Internet.

  • How can I make OSX index a network share for spotlight?

How can I make OSX index a network share for spotlight?
I am using a QNAP NAS with SMB network shares, which I mount with OS X Mavericks. They are not searchable, as far as I know because of the indexing of network share is by default not activated.
To force the OS to index them I activated this via mdutils. But this is no solutions. This makes spotlight to index the share once. But I want spotlight to index it always and keep it up to date. I have a huge amount of documents & fotographs, which is very difficult to manage without being searchable.
Unfortunately the only solution I found in the www was the mdutils-way, which seems not to work, maybe only works not for me.
    I would appreciate any assistance,
    Thank you,
    Stefan

My thanks to everyone who has contributed to solving this problem here.
It appears that there still is NOT a good, reliable solution.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I did find this on http://jonathansblog.co.uk/how-to-enable-spotlight-indexing-on-a-network-drive:
    ===================================
To enable spotlight indexing on a network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -i on
To disable the indexing of a connected network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -i off
To check the status of indexing on a connected network drive:
    # mdutil /Volumes/name -s
    ===================================
And, I found this on the Synology NAS forums:
    cd /Volumes
    mdutil shareName -i on
    mdimport -Vp ./shareName
where shareName = name of your share
I have used the mdutil /Volumes/name -i on, and it seems to work.
But, if I understand it correctly, it is a one-time indexing -- the index is NOT keep up-to-date with changes.
So, how can we keep the index up-to-date?
My thought was to schedule a Terminal file to execute each night with the mdutil code.
Would this work?  If so, how would you setup a scheduled run?
Would it have to be done on each Mac that accesses the Share?

  • Iphone and ipad can find network, iMac and macbook 10.8.2 cannot

Had a network fault. When fault was fixed, ipad/iphone & Dell studio xps laptop reconnected automatically. Imac 2012 and macbook 2010, 10.8.3, can see network but not connect automatically. Tried connecting to network and get message connection timeout has occurred.
    Got connection by;
    Open Network preferences
    Join other network
enter network name select - Security wpa2 personal
    enter network password
However - I need to do this after every sleep/reboot - is there a fix for this?
PS - I noted that I had previously been on WEP security setting and had real problems connecting to external devices consistently, such as epson wireless printer BX935FWD, and Western Digital My Book Live Duo. Since moving onto WPA2, these connection now work consistently, but macbook and imac always need to be forced to connect to network, in manner described above
Does anyone share a similar problem/managed to resolve network issues? - very frustrating.....must be an OSX issue as all other devices connect without issue.

I've managed to download 10.8.2 for my MBP Retina 13.3" but when I try and install I'm told that none of my discs are suitable i.e. Internal solid state drive with 370 GB available, or attached thunderbolt drive.   Meanwhile my iPhoto won't work. This has arisen because I migrated from an older MBP which was already running 10.8.2 and had latest iPhoto onto a factory fresh 10.8.1 machine.

  • Can i install osx lion on my macbook pro snow leopard 10.6

    Good day every one
i just need to know if i can install the OSX lion on my MacBook Pro 10.6.8 ?

Yes, as long as you meet the other requirements:

  • Airport card can see networks but can't connect all of a sudden

I have an older MacBook running 10.6.8 (snow leopard) and it's been working fine. All of a sudden, it can see networks, but cannot connect. I get an alert with an exclamation point and "no Internet connection". My iPad can connect just fine; same network, same location as usual, so I know it's not an issue with the network/router (my husband's computer works fine as well). If my airport card went, I wouldn't be able to see any networks at all, right?  Is there anything I can do?  My AppleCare has run out, due to the age of my computer and I don't want to put hundreds into fixing it, either (nor can I afford it). Has anyone had this happen?  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

  • Big trouble: Tried to do 2 partitions now I can't install OSX.

I had this happen once before on my G5 and it was fixed by rebooting and trying again. Not this time.
I wanted 2 partitions on my new MacBook so I decided to reinstall before I got a whole lot of software on it.
After making both partitions Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and clicking partition I tried to finish setup but both partitions say they can't have OSX installed on them!
I restarted, booted to the CD again, repartitioned back to a single Partition, same problem.
Next I repartitioned again and tried to Zero out the disk, (getting desparate at this point) 45min later. No luck!
    HELP!

The problem is the type of partition that you have created.
You are going to need to repartition the disk again. To do this boot from your OS X disk and use disk utility (it is under the "Utilities" menu (i think there is a menu with disk utility for sure.)
Once you have Disk Utility Running go into the partition menu and select options. You need to use the GUID Parition Table to allow you to install OS X on an Intel map. After that then repartition and you should be able to install.

erased mac book pro (2009), how can i reinstall osx?  it won't recognize old system discs

    Did you try:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
If you don't have the original discs that came with the computer, then you can install the retail version of Snow Leopard:
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and

  • Where can i get osx lion

Hi i have a macbook pro that came with osx lion and would like to uprgade my white macbook 2008 to osx lion 10.7 But i upgraded my macbook pro to 10.8 and i don't have osx lion on a cd or flash drive where can i purchase osx lion

Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.  The price is $19.99.
You must have at least a Late 2006 model 2,1 MacBook.
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • Can't update osx because disk full

I have a MacBook Air with 120 GB hard drive.  Have been getting message "Can't update (OSX) because startup disk full."  Says I need to free up some disk space.  Other messages just say the hard drive is too full.  When I go to Finder the "get info" option for the hard drive says I only have about 365 MB left on disk.  Hard to believe since I have very little data on computer.  No music, no videos, less than 100 pictures.  Only thing of any size is Parallels desktop and Windows 7.  I was stopped from using Windows because of the full disk.
When I check each secxtion in Finder>Favorites they only add up to less than 70 GB (still hard to believe that much is on my disk).
How do I search this out?  Where did the other 50 GB (120 GB that "get info" for hard drive says is used less 70 GB sum of folders)?  Is there a utility to show all folders or files in order of size, high to low?
BTW, my home iMac with thousands of pictures, 300+ cd's in lossless compression and many more downloads, files and programs loaded doesn't use as much disk space as this Air.
