Can't open '09 numbers in '08 numbers

I saved a file that I made in Numbers '09 (but I saved it as iWorks '08) and now when I try to open it using '08 I get a message that reads "The index.xml file is missing." What does this mean? And how can I fix this?
Help! =/
Catherine

You are really funny.

So...I'm thinking that this is a bug that Apple will have to work out, right? =) I managed to get it to open in iWorks 08, but not before I had to do a lot of problem-solving on my end. _I don't even remember what I did either._ =/
In the new version, many new features are added.
The three components use the new spreadsheet functions (about 100 where added) .
I can't imagine a formula allowing iWork'08 programs opening the iWork'09 native documents.
These docs are stamped "made by iWork'09" and so iWork'08 program reject them.
Every user is allowed to use the tool as he want. If someone doesn't take care of what he does, is it surprising that he get odd results.
I repeat that if you use the
Save As > Save copy as > iWork'08, you will get a document which will open in iWork '08.
I may add that this document will not be exactly the one which was imported from iWork'08.
If like me you use the short references like = B*C in your spreadsheets, the 'saved as iWork'08" file will contain the long references =B200*C200.
It's the only oddity which I encountered.

  • Can't open older Numbers spreadsheet

Bought a new Macbook Pro.  Now trying to open an old numbers spreadsheet and it's telling me "This spreadsheet can’t be opened because it’s too old. To open it save it in Numbers '09 first'  The new Macbook Pro is showing version '08.  How do I open this older version?

    Hi warmbeaches,
What version of OS X are you running? Apple menu > About This Mac
**Do not delete Numbers '08, Numbers '09 or Numbers 3 if they are on your machine! **
    You might need them!
All versions will run happily together.
Try App Store to update all versions of Numbers (Numbers '08, Numbers '09 or Numbers 3) to the versions that will work on your current OS X. Previous releases will not be replaced. They will be moved to a sub-folder within your Applications folder. They won't disappear.
Have a look here at this User Tip by Wayne:
Need newer version of Numbers to open file
Numbers 3 (if you have that on your new machine) will not (and can not) open a Numbers '08 document.
Be sure which version of Numbers is trying to open a document.
In Finder, Right Click (or control click) and Open With

  • Can't open old Numbers spreadsheet after upgrading Mac to Yosemite. Error message says it should first be upgraded to Numbers 09 but doesn't provide method to do so?  Help?

Can't open old Numbers spreadsheet after upgrading Mac to Yosemite. Error message says it should first be upgraded to Numbers 09 but doesn't provide method to do so?  Help?

There is a chance the spreadsheets were made with a Numbers or AppleWorks version so old that it's not compatible anymore with the latest Numbers version (yes this can happen)

  • I can't open a Numbers 08 file in Numbers 3.2. Why is that?

I restored an old Numbers 08 file from my backup disk but I can't open it with the new version 3.2.2
I keep getting a message that says:
"This spreadsheet can’t be opened because it’s too old.
To open it, save it with Numbers ’09 first."
I only have the new version of Numbers (3.2.2) and my old mac is gone (the one with which I created the document), so I can't save it with Numbers '09 as I am asked to do.
Does any one knows how to work around this problem?
    Thanks!

    Hi Billy,
If you have AppleCare on your new computer, call them and ask for help. They may send you an iWork '09 disk to use as a bridge. Or you can purchase one on Amazon, for less than $30 last time I looked. In either case, run Software Update immediately after installing the disk to get the version that runs with your new OS.
if you don't want to or can't do any of that, you are welcome to send the file to me and I'll send it back to you in Version 2 or Version 3 format, or both if you wish.

  • How can I open a Numbers file to the last cell used on from the previous saving of that file?

In Excel, the .xls file would always open on the the cell location where the file was previously saved.  Very nice to have feature when the file is long ,so one does not have to keep scrolling down the page to make the next entry every time the file is opened.
Can Numbers do this?  I can't find an option for it.
After opening a file, I must always scroll down to the last entry or where I want to start inputting data.  What a pain.
Is there a way to open a numbers file to where one was located when it was previously saved?
    Anybody know?  Please help.
    Thanks

    CF,
When I Save a Numbers document with a cell Selected and then close the document, the same cell is still selected when I reopen the document. Isn't that what you are asking for? Furthermore, if I have chosen 100% zoom scale, the selected cell is displayed in the same screen position as when it was last saved. What you may be seeing that you don't care for is that if the zoom is other than 100% the table's position in the display window may be different than at the last Save.

  • I can't open my numbers spreadsheet on my Mac, from iCloud

I save my numbers spreadsheets to icloud as I need to access them on the go.
Now that I have turned my Mac off and back on, I can't access any of my numbers spreadsheets from icloud.
When I try to open one I get an error message that says "You need a newer version of Numbers to open this spreadsheet."
    I have the latest version.
This happened a few weeks ago, and was eventually sorted when another update came through for numbers for my Mac.
But this time I waited for the updated to catch up with Australia, but I still can't open them.
I can however access then by sharing the document via icloud, but I can't use it in numbers on my Mac, and I cant save it to my Mac.
    Does anyone have any tips?

It sounds like you may have mre than one version of Numbers installed on your Mac. and that the older one is attempting to open these files.
If you were previously using Numbers '09, and upgraded to Numbers 3, the older version will still be on the Mac, enclosed in a folder named iWork '09, found in your Applications folder.
Numbers 3 will also be in the Applications folder, but not enclosed in another folder.
The two versions have different feature sets, and I would caution against removing the earlier version before ensuring that any features you have been using and that you need are supported in Numbers 3. Both versions can coexist on the same machine (and according to reports, can both be running at the same time).
To ensure that you are launching the newer version, make sure you have it's icon on the Dock, and that you use that icon to start the launch. The icons for the two versions are similar—both are vertical bar graphs in 3D format. The difference is in the number of bars—three for Numbers '09 and four for Numbers 3. Once you ahve launched the needed version, use File > Open (or File > Recent items) to locte and open the file.

  • Can't Open Pages, Numbers or Keynote through iCloud on my PC

Went to my PC this morning and logged into iCloud. I noticed a new ICON for iCloud Drive. Never saw it before. I tried to open Pages to update a document and couldn't open Pages, Numbers or Keynote. I was greeted with the picture below.Without any warning Apple is telling me if I want to ever see these documents again on my PC I must update all my devices to IOS 8 immediately and then activate iCloud Drive on all devices. Not something I wanted to see on a day I needed my presentations for a client. How can we ever trust Apple again with significant documents? Have any of you experienced this?

For those of you who woke up this morning and tried to access Pages, Numbers or Keynote on your PC running Windows XP. Sorry the party is over and it ended without warning from Apple.
Here is an update just confirmed by an Apple Senior Advisor.
This is what Apple did without warning.
    1. Took Pages, Numbers and Keynote documents and moved them to iCloud Drive making them NO LONGER AVAILABLE on a PC just by logging into iCloud.com.
    2. Gave us an option to view them on a PC only after you upgrade all your devices that use those apps to IOS 8.
    3. You then must activate iCloud drive on your devices and PC but only if you are not running WINDOWS XP because iCloud Drive is not supported on a PC running XP.
Conclusion, if you have a PC running WINDOWS XP hurray up and purchase WINDOWS 8 and upgrade your PC, then upgrade all your iDevices to IOS 8 then activate iCloud Drive and you may be able to once again see your documents on a PC. I don't know who will pay you for the day off to do all this but that's not Apples concern. They are to busy hyping the new iPhone to worry about keeping you in business. It's only their business that counts.

  • How can i open a numbers '08 file in the newest 3.5 version?

I need to open several numbers files that were created in Numbers '08 v 1.0.3.  My computer only has v 3.5 of Numbers and when I attempt to open it tells me to save them as Numbers 09 but I can't even open the files to resave them.

    Hi v_burges,
You need to get your hands on a copy of Numbers '09. Some people have had success talking to Apple and they have sent them a disk. I found a free copy as a thirty day trial that worked fine for me. Do a quick search and you will be done.

  • I can´t open a numbers document.

    Hello,
I have a problem. I created a numbers document one month ago. Yesterday I wanted to open it again and the mac says, I need a new version. So I updated the version. But still I can´t open it because anytime I want to open the document it says, that I need a new version.
Can somebody please help me with this problem?
    Thank you

    Hi Kerstin,
If you are running Numbers for Mac with OS X Mavericks, the update to Numbers 3 did not replace Numbers 2.3 (Numbers '09)
Numbers 2.3 has been moved to a folder called iWork '09 inside your Applications folder. It works as well as it always did. The icon on your Dock was not replaced. It continues to point to the older version of Numbers.
Numbers 3 is in your Applications folder (not in a sub folder). Drag the icon to your Dock. It will become an alias. Right click (or control click) on it and Options > Keep in Dock.
With icons for both versions on your Dock, you can choose which to open.
Numbers 2 on the left (3 column chart).
Numbers 3 on the right (4 column chart).
Both versions will run happily at the same time if you wish. Just be sure which version is opening your document.
You can revert a document that Numbers 3 has 'stolen' with Menu > File > Export To > Numbers '09.
    Regards,
    Ian.

  • Can't open my numbers document!

I haven't been able to open my numbers spreadsheet with my budget on it for a week now. this is the message i get.
    please help!!
I've tried duplicating the document. I've tried sending it so myself and exporting it every different way, but nothing works. I don't know what to do.

    Hi Sailor,
It is pretty amazing you got a new version without even knowing it.
In System Preferences > App Store you can turn off the automatic updates by unchecking "Install app updates" as I've done here:
If you're using Numbers across platforms and displaying dynamic output on the iPad or doing data entry there, you'll be *much* happier with Numbers 3.0 than the old version. If you're doing a lot of traditional printing of heavily formatted documents, the old version is much better.  For most day-to-day uses in between it's a toss-up.  The new version, despite its flaws, is a powerful application that can enhance productivity in ways the old version can't.

  • Are you kidding me? can't open 2008 Numbers?

Just got the new numbers and it won't open any of my old 2008 numbers files. Can't open because it's too old! ***? You need to BUY iWorks 09, save the document and then open it in the new Numbers 3? Are you kidding me? BYE BYE APPLE!
Wow, someone (probably Microsoft) gave some cash to greedy Apple under the table to stop the competition.
Now give me back the $20!
    Bye Apple.

I agree that you should not have to jump through undignified hoops if you've bought a new version of software and just need to bring old documents into it. That must have been an irritating surprise.  If someone in your organization spent time on the phone with Apple my guess is you would eventually get satisfaction. The solution suggested in the other thread seemed quicker, though, and may just do the trick.
I'm sure you're aware that Numbers 3.0 is not as good as Numbers 2 if you need to produce a lot of precisely formatted printed output or are particularly attached to some of the features that have been dropped. Numbers 3 is better than Numbers 2 at collaboration and dynamic display, particularly of charts, on either Mac or iPad. It's also strong at data entry on mobile that syncs back to the Mac.
To get a quick and quite vivid portrayal of users' feelings and perspectives on the various differences between the two, the features gained, features lost, and workarounds threads may be helpful.

  • Can't open a numbers file

    Dear Colleages
I have a big problem with a numbers file. I work with the numbers version and have saved a file couple days ago on a usb stick. It file with my password login usw. I have done and used that file for months and I have been using the new numbers version since the launch of the new version. Today when I wanted to open the file to adjust it I get the messge "pw.numbers file can't be opened". I have not used dropbox or cloud for that file.
    What can I do.
    Thanks for your help

    Hello Paul,
Can I ask how you are opening the file?  I am having similair issues, although I am preferring iWorks '09 apps still but have both installed, and working on files on a remote server (WebDav), I am getting the similiar errors, but if I copy the file to the local desktop and work with it there, then it's fine.  Maybe your attempting to open from the USB stick!?  Try locally on the desktop/documents folder?

  • .xls file format - downloaded from Gmail, can't open in numbers

I tried to open it using a 3rd party "conversion" program called icExcel.app which i found on the web. I saved the file as Appleworks 6 which is the file format the program offered which Numbers would open -- but it didn't work. Any experience? I don't know what version of .xls in office the file was saved in.

    Hi Ian Mcgrady,
    Welcome to Numbers Discussions.
Is this file you're attempting to open a true MS Excel .XLS file? Or is it a Google web app? What message are you getting, what happens, are you attempting to open it over the web or off your desktop? The more information you can provide us the better someone will be able to assist you. I've been able to open XLS files without difficulty.
Also, please be aware these discussion groups are users as yourself helping users.
    Again welcome to Numbers discussions.
    Sincerely,

  • Can't Open Old Numbers Docs in Beta

Is anyone else having this problem? I am trying to open an older spreadsheet from iWork '09 and it won't open on my iPhone (Numbers 3), Mac (Numbers '09) or the current iCloud Number Beta.
Is there workaround?  It won't let me Share or Download so I could open in Excel.
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks.

    UPDATE & WORKAROUND:
Ok, i found a way to at least see the spreadsheet. Change the file extension to .zip and it'll bring up a few files in Finder. Mine came up as INDEX. I was able to do a Quick Look on the file and it shows my spreadsheet.
I'll have to re-enter the info into a new spreadsheet, but at least I was able to see my data.
I'll be using Google Docs from now on. What a hassle?!

  • I downloaded the New numbers iOS and now i can't open any numbers documents

I just recently downloaded the new Mavricks update and now all my numbers Documents say i need to download the new system before opening. I alread have the new numbers system so i am unsure of what I need to do to fix it. I use numbers all day for my job so not having it is really not an option.

Go to the App Store via the Dock or by starting the program from your Applications folder. Sign in with your Apple ID/Password and type Numbers in the search box on the top right. That should let you navigate to the Numbers download.
