Can't open a folder?

I can't open one of my folders! When I try Finder hides and my desktop refreshes itself. If I try to see what's in a folder in Word or something, the program "quits unexpectedly". What should I do? I ran antivirus software and it didn't come up with anything and I need this folder for work!

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, but it's best to start with these two steps, which may fix it also...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then Safe Boot off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
(Safe Boot = holding Shift key down at bootup)
Once we've done that, and if it doesn't fix it, we can try other things.

  • After latest os X update February 2012, the Finder can not open a folder anymore and asks to restore the windows or not

After installing the latest update - automatic updates and after rebooting without any error, the finder application can not open any folder or device anymore.
Seems the appication crashes after which the following pop-up appears :
    Anybody any idea ?

    I would do the following:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Can't open download folder in my mac

help!!!! I can't open download folder anymore. Anyone can help me out?

My case is little different than what you said above. When I click the Download Fold that is in the dock, it just pops up a blank window. Then even I click the Finder in dock, it pops up blank window as well. However I still can open Finder with "Conmand + N". I clicked Download Folder the one in the home folder, it does not respond.
Just let you know I am using Lion os x, the folders in the home folder can not be modified and deleted.
I tried using spotlight to open it, but it still doesn't work.

  • Can't open a folder in finder with a single click

Hi there! So I am a new user of Mac and I tried to change some of its settings on system preferences last night. When I am looking for something on the finder, I noticed that I can't click to open the folder. No matter how many times I clicked on it. So I clicked on the right side of my mouse and found out that the option "Open" is gone only "Open in New Tab" is there. It kind of bothered me because I don't want to keep adding new tabs. Please help!

If I understand your problem correctly the solution is to select the Finder menu and then Preferences. In the Dialog box a little more than 1/2 down there's a checkmark option Open folders in tabs instead of windows. Make sure that option is NOT check marked.

  • Can not open download folder in Finder after update to OS X Lion

Hi there. I have recently upgraded to OS X Lion. The upgrade was smooth. But since the upgrade I am unable to open Download folder in Finder. If I select Download in Finder's sidebar nothing happens. Finder won't display content of Download folder. If I go and select Home folder in sidebar, Finder displays content of my Home folder including Download. If I double click Download folder to access it nothing happens again. Cant access it. But if expand download folder using triangle next to it, Finder will expand me Download folder and show it's content...
I tried to verify and repair my permissions with Disk Utility, but did not solve my issuel. It is very frustrating scenario, since Download folder is something I access every day multiple times.
Any ides what can I do?

I found a solution that worked for me. Seems like my firewall did not accept the afp connection permissions anymore after installing lion... Since everything worked well turning off the firewall.
So if you don't want to keep your firewall disactivated here is what worked for me:
    - Leave your firewall activated.
    - Turn OFF afp file sharing in the sistem prefs
    - Restart your Machine
    - Turn ON afp file sharing
    - You should now get a message if you want to accept afp connections...
    - click YES
Seems like this resets somehow the afp permissions in the firewall settings
Everything fine on my network now.

  • Problem Application - can't open Applications folder in finder

    Dear All,
I went to upgrade an application (Transmission) today, but during the upgrade, my macbook requested to be restarted. I did this, and now whenever that application is encountered in finder, it crashes finder. This means I cannot open the folder in finder, or from my dock. If I search for it using spotlight, it also crashes.
I have tried deleting it through terminal, but when I navigate to the applications folder, and type "ls -l", no contents are listed, though I can still load other applications through spotlight.
Does anyone have any idea what I might be able to do to delete this problem application? I was hoping to just do a system restore using my time-machine backups, but I don't have an install CD, and apparently you can't do that without one of those.
Thank you in advance for any advice!

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I'd launch the Console utility and look under ~/Library/Logs and /Library/Logs for a CrashReporter item. If you see a Finder crash log in either of those locations, post the contents here and someone may be able to help you decipher what's wrong.
I'd also use Disk Utility to do a "verify disk" operation on your boot drive to see if that reveals anything.

If all else fails it's probably possible to use commands in the Terminal application to delete the problematic application, but first I'd try the things I suggest above.

  • Can't open 'Downloads' folder. Finder crash.

Can't open my 'Downloads' folder. Every attempt to open it crashes Finder and restores a new finder window. However I have no problems with other folders. I appreciate any input or suggestions. Using a Late 2009 White Unibody Macbook with OS X Lion 10.7.1.
    Thanks.

    Solved.
Went into terminal and deleted the corrupted .DS_Store file.

  • [solved] Gnome-do can't open home folder

I've been using gnome-do for a while now and like it, but I can't get it to open my home folder.  This is with the docky theme.  If I try to use it to open my home folder.
What I mean is type super-space to bring up the text input box and then type "home", if I run the action to open home folder it brings up the busy cursor icon but then never opens the home folder.
I can work around this by enabling the files and folders plugin and then typing my username, but I would rather have the home folder thing work.
Anyone else using gnome-do on Arch have this problem or any idea why I'm having this problem?

Well apparently this is a known issue that the gnome-do devs are not too interested in fixing https://bugs.launchpad.net/do/+bug/290136
Edit: Actually looks like it was a nautilus bug, there is a workaround in the bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/do/+bug/290136/comments/48, you only need to make the following change: in /usr/share/applications/nautilus-home.desktop, change "Exec=nautilus --no-desktop" to "Exec=nautilus --no-desktop ."  - Just add a space and a period.

  • LOG & TRANSFER can´t open CONTENT FOLDER

    Hi all!
I have the "content" folder copied from a P2 card to an external hard drive.
It should be seen in the log & transfer, but it does not... any tips?
For example, i have a content folder in a DMG file and opens fine!
OK, you´re saying a file is missing in the external folder... no... i can see all the files in the disk and are the same in the copied one (also same size!)
    Tips are welcome!
    Thank you!

    Hi Shane!
    Thank you for the msg.
In fact i have FX Factory version 1 installed in my mac... could be the problem!
I forgot to tell you one thing (that i think it shouldn´t be the problem!) the files were copied to a external USB2 disc, the DMG file i have is in a FIREWIRE one, and opens fine - USB2 could be also a problem... i don´t think so! (but i still can´t open it!)
I´ll try update my version of FX Factory (dear AMEX!) and test it again!
Thank you for all the information!

p.s. i´ll close the question and "star" you later... let us share this information!

  • I can't open a folder copied from windows after mountain lion install.

Yesterday, I installed mountain lion, since then I can't open any of folders I copied from other windows computer.
It worked fine with lion. Idon't understand.
    Any help?? pleas??

All of your TBird mail files are located in ~/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/XXX.default. The library folder is hidden in Mountain Lion by default. To make it visible open the terminal app in your utilities folder and type "chflags nohidden ~/Library" without the quotes.

  • Can't open Preferences folder, Finder crashes/relaunches

Every time I double-click the User/Library/Preferences folder to open it, the Finder crashes/relaunches and the folder won't open. I can click on the triangle to expand it, but I can't open it by double-clicking. I've tried rebuilding permissions but no help. Any ideas?

Open the Terminal app and type the following: *rm -r ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist*
Reboot the computer and give it a shot then

  • Can access my Conceptronic NAS ( CH3HNAS ) but can't open any folder.

I have installed OS X 10.7 (Lion) and I noticed a LOT of people started having problems with their NAS. Basically most people can't mount/access the NAS. My problem is different since I CAN access it but I am not able to open any folders on my Conceptronic model CH3HNAS. I am trying to login using 2 different accounts (the default 'admin' and a personal one) both with admin privileges but I can only see the first level of folders, I can't open any of them. Lion says I don't have permission to see the contents.
I have emailed Conceptronic, I'll post any replies here.
In the meanwhile anyone knows how can I restore access to the folders? Any command line tricks?
    Cheers

OK I found a free and easy solution.
Since a lot of people report they are able to access their NAS using apps other than the Finder itself, I decided to look for a free Lion-compatible File Manager to use instead of Finder.
I have found muCommander ( http://www.mucommander.com/ ) and indeed it works fine. All I did was click on the button highlighted bellow, go to "bonjour services" and select my NAS. It prompted me for my username and password and voilá, it works fine.
I keep Finder for everyday use and just load muCommander when I want to access the NAS. At least now I don't have to start my WinXP VM anymore just to access it.
    Hope it helps you all.

  • I can't open a folder in a New Tab, nor have the option to after right-click.

Basically exactly what it says on the tin.
After changing my Finder preferences back and forth, restarting, and trashing my library files to no avail, I'm wondering if anyone has a solution.
I can create new tabs, but only by using the '+' button in an open Finder window OR the File drop-down menu.

Click on the Finder window to set your keyboard focus. Now, if you press command+T, a new Finder tab will appear. This works in all four Finder views. To open an existing folder in a New Tab, it is either a right-click, or two finger Trackpad tap, on the icon –– to pop the contextual menu with the Open in New Tab option. Again, this too works in all four Finder views.
    Using Mavericks.

  • Can't open project folder

I need help. I was trying to separate two different sites. I went to user/library/applicationsupport/iweb and moved the domain file to a separate sites folder so that I could switch them back and forth. Now I open iweb and try to switch btwn the sites by moving them in and out of the iweb folder. It "loads" (Or at least seems to load) I can even see the names of all of my former files loading up. But then nothing shows up in the iWeb site organizer. I'm frustrated because everything I've read tells me that I'm doing it right. ARGH! Can anyone help?

I can even see the names of all of my former files loading up.
That doesn't sound right. The normal behaviour is for the progress bar to move across while iWeb says 'Opening...'. You shouldn't see actual file names.
