Can't open Adobe Reader XI! May not have appropriate permissions?? Need help!

Here's the deal. I noticed I wasn't able to open up my PDF files like I used to (it would suddenly pop up a window asking if I wanted to open the file using another program on my computer or the web) so I figured that the latest update might've done something wrong. I double clicked on the shortcut Adobe Reader icon on my desktop and a small window (Explorer.EXE) came up reading, "The item referred to by this shortcut cannot be accessed. You may not have the appropriate permissions." I uninstatlled and then installed Adobe Reader XI three times yet everytime I click on the icon, it gives me the same message. Can anyone help me? I have Windows 7.

From an administrative account try to run the Acrobat and Adobe Reader cleaner tool: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
Then try re-installing with all virus protection turned off.

Visual Studio made changes for your whole system, if the file has been moved or deleted this error would occur.
Since you mentioned that you get this error almost everywhere even in control panel. We suggest you repair/reinstall your Visual Studio first and check if it could be fixed.

  • Can't open Adobe Reader XI

I am unable to open Adobe Reader XI on my new PC with Windows 8. Everytime I open a file, it just hangs and says (Not Responding) and I am forced to close the file. I have even uninstalled and reinstalled the program, but the problem persists. When I open the folder, if I choose preview, the file shows up fully, but would not open the file in a proper way. It also works in Adobe Reader when I open a file on the internet that is saved in pdf format by the provider (like a company's annual report) and am able to switch to the Reader. The only time it fails to respond is when I try to open a file directly, either by doble-clicking on the file or by File-Open comman in Adobe.

    Some things to try...
Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

    Have tried.
    1. Uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Reader XI. Still have same open error when opened program.
    2. Used Adobe Reader Cleanup tools to clean up installed file and reinstalled Adobe Reader XI. Still have the same open error.
    3. Uninstalled and installed Adobe Reader 9. It can work normally.
Now I let the user to use Adobe Reader 9 but need to solve for him. As some pdf files are needed by newer Adobe Reader version.
Please help to fix.   Many thanks.

I have a similar problem - just posted this today, 5th July 2014. I get a message that says windows cannot find c:\programme files(x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\AcroRd 32.exe.  Tried several uninstall/reinstalls with special programmes to check that uninstall was complete. Oddly, a download trial of the full programme Adobe Pro works OK !  If an expert out there can sort this it would be much appreciated.

In installation process of Acrobat Professional 7 , its showing that Adobe Pdf printer is not Installed...need help to install the software completely

If it is Win 7 or later, the Adobe PDF printer for AA 7 will not install and AcroTray will not function. You will have to install a PS driver from Adobe or maybe an HP color PS printer driver. Then edit the driver properties and change the name to Adobe PDF and the port to FILE. You will always have to do an extra step in creating PDFs by opening the file that is created in Distiller to get the PDF.
If you are talking about Win 8, you may not be successful at all. If you got Acrobat and Distiller to install, then there is a chance.

  • "Unable to setup Inventory, you may not have proper Permissions."

Has anyone had this problem when the GROUP NAME screen appears. After I type the groupname "oinstall", a window opens and states the following:
"Unable to setup Inventory, you may not have proper Permissions."
What is puzzling is that it (Oracle Universal Installer) is able create the directory structure /d01/app/oracle/oraInventory/Install.Platform. Which implies that it has the proper permissions. I'm not sure what to do at this point. Well, there isn't much I can do.
Does anyone have an answer to this problem or have seen this before?
    Thanks

Check the list of prerequisites in the installation manual and be sure you have all of them. Also the manual or couple page addendum that comes with it should refer to an online site where you can find updates. Be sure to check it.
I ran the 9.2.0 install and applied 9.2.0.4 on AIX 5.2L without a hitch so I do not think I could be of much help. But one thing you might want to consider is if Oracle says that a piece of the OS is missing then even if you are running the machine standalone you might need the "group" piece to be installed as part of the OS.
I am not an administrator so the name did not strike any bells but I once tried to install Oracle on a Silicon Graphics box only to discover that it was missing the C compiler. Oracle needs the archive feature to access libraries during the install (link) and failed to install because it was missing. Once I got it installed the reinstallation went perfect.

  • "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file, you may not have appropriate permission to access the item" Why?

Whenever i try to access any folder on my computer(Windows 7), it tells me "Windows
cannot access the specified device, path, or file, you may not have appropriate permission to access the item",
    this happens even for My
Computer and Control Panel. It's driving me nuts! I'll be honest here, I was trying to uninstall Visual
Studio 2013 Communityfrom my computer by going to Programs
and Features but for some reason, it was getting stuck at "Configuring
Your System". After trying it numerous times, I went to the visual studio installation directory, and removed
the installation files from there. I even removed the files from the C:\Program
Data folder, then i went back to Programs
and Features and tried to remove the listing there, but I got a dialog box saying "you
don't have sufficient access to uninstall visual studio" . I googled this problem and found this  solution
    (http://superuser.com/a/174198)
then i tried using the solution, I used SubinAcl and
changed the registry permissions as mentioned in the solution and ended up like this!
All the access permissions are set correctly (that's what I can make out...)

  • Cannot open .pdfs via Outlook or Adobe Reader, can't open Adobe Reader, can't uninstall it!

We have a new office desktop that will not open .pdfs or open Adobe Reader.  The version on the computer is 9.5.2.  When I try to install updates or install Adobe XI, the installation process stops before completion because it says Adobe 9.5 is currently being open.  But we can't open Adobe 9.5, and task manager does not even show the program as being open.
I have tried uninstalling the program, but have been unable for the same reason.

You can try using this tool to remove all traces of previous version(s) of Reader:
    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
Then, you may download the offline Reader installer from
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
After downloading, restart your computer and run the installer before doing anything else.

  • Can't open Adobe Reader

    Hello,
I was able to read pdf files since I got E65. Unfortunately it has changed (other files like doc can be open with no problem). When I try to open Adobe Reader or any pdf file it crashes.
I have installed DrJukka's Y-Task and started Crash Monitor. It shows (whatever it means):
    Exit category: USER
    Exit type: Panic
    Exit reason: 11
I'd be grateful for suggestions what has caused this behavior and what to do to fix it.

OK, I did this and when I try to open Reader it pops a window up that says; Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access them.
I am the only one on this PC and I am the admin.
    I appreciate your help.

  • Can't open Adobe Reader in 10.5.7

I just discovered that I cannot download pdf files in Safari with OS 10.5.7. My old Adobe Reader 8 will not open at all. I found a patch 9.1.2, that supposedly would work, but it is a patch for 9.1.1, which is a patch for 9.0. When I downloaded 9.0, it would not open "in this architecture." I have Adobe Professional, but can't download the file from Safari in order to open it in that or in Preview, because Safari just keeps sending me straight to the Adobe site. This really seems like Catch-22. Can anyone help with this? Thanks.

Thanks, you are completely right--I clicked on the PC choice by mistake. However, I now have Reader 9.1.2 all installed and it opens fine. But when I went back to the original website that was giving me trouble, and clicked on the little pdf file I wanted to download, Safari again sent me directly to the Adobe website. Is there someplace in Safari where I can tell it to use the Adobe Reader I already have installed? I looked in preferences, but didn't see a way to do that. Thanks so much for your help.

    Same thing for me.
As soon as I pick the icon or any other pdf file it goes to a grey screen (because of my theme) and then just goes back to the page I was on.
It worked earlie today. My files are on a few kb's so thats not the issue.
As gaszczakr said any help would be appreciated,
PS sorry if I got you hopes up for a solution gaszczakr.
