Can't open an event in iPhoto

I have a large collection of photos and mpeg videos stored in iPhoto (12,000 plus items) on my iMac. For the past week or so, I've been unable to click on the event in the iPhoto collection and then see the photos in that particular event. I've tried rebuilding my iPhoto Library to no avail. Does anyone no of a solution, or have you heard of a problem like this?

What do you see when you click on the Event? Also can you see the photos in the Photo mode? In the Photos mode do you have Event Titles selected in the View menu so they display? That will let you find the event you want and see if you can see the photos there.
Try the basic fix first: close iPhoto, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto and see if that helps.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Cannot open an event on iphoto 11 by double clicking to reveal all photos in the event

As a test  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it doesn't your current library is damaged and needs repairing. Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Can't open certain images in iPhoto

Hello. Ever since I installed iLife'06, I can't open certain thumbnails in iPhoto. They are there, you can see them, but if you double click them to open them, you get the 'searching' ring forever. I made a duplicate of one of the thumbnails, and it opened fine after that. What's up?

You should update to 10.4.6. It completely fixed this problem for me.

I can't see my events from iPhoto (11 - 9.3.1). Only one event is in my library (the first one) and the last import that I made in iphoto is the first one . The others events disapear!! What can be happen? Please, someone could help me?

I tried to do shift + alt + command - option
    That's not what I suggested...
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto.
Restore from your back up is the easiest solution.

I used to be able to open & create an event in iCal.  But, the last time I sync'd my iphone & macbook it asked me which event was correct.  I clicked on the one on the right and haven't been able to view or create on macbook since (can open & create event on iphone).

  • I can not open my Aperture or Iphoto library

    Hello everyone,
I have the application Aperture where I edit pictures and can not seem to open it today when I try the message "To open this iPhoto library in Aperture, it first needs to be upgraded.Verify that you have iPhoto 9.4 or later. Then open the library in iPhoto to upgrade it." I upgraded Iphoto and then tryed to open Aperture while Iphoto was closed and I got the same message. Then I tried to open the Iphoto library and now the message "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable.Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup. Aperture was not open at the time so I shut down then restarted my computer. The same Message Appered. Then I tried to rebuild the library by holding down the option and command key I tried all of the rebuilding options and when I went to rebuild it the same message opened in iphoto. Help me! I am a photographer with a website and need to get this up and running fast. I wanted to cunsult with Apple Support Communities before I make the trip out to the apple store.

Also when I went to finder to see it the library existed its now labled Iphoto library copy. I have a time capsule and restored it back by a day and it didn't work I still got the same message in aperture and Iphoto.

  • I can't open my backed-up Iphoto Library on my new Mac with upgraded iLife. How can I retrieve all my pics??

Having backed-up my old iMac using time machine, thinking to open up my iPhoto Library to retrieve all pics from Time Machine, but iPhoto doesn't let me open it. First a pop-up appears: "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete." When I click Upgrade another pop-up appears "You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto." But I am using the latest version iLife 11. Is there a way to open up the library in a different way, so I can get my pics back???

It sounds like the restored database is damaged.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Can't rename/name events in iPhoto

Hi all, please help if you can
I'm a proficient mac user and I installed iPhoto 08 and have never been able to change or name events in iPhoto. I called mac support they don't know. I have reinstalled the software, tried starting a new library, I have updated to latest (yesterday's) update.
I also tried moving my library to the root so as to eliminate any permission errors.
I thought it was a bug but mac support guy confirmed it can be done.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Make sure that the HelveticaNeue font is installed and active on your computer. Also, have a read of this: it's written for the iMac, but the trick will work equally on your MBP

  • I can't open Quicktime files from iPhoto

I can't seem to open Quicktime files from iPhoto. I try double-clicking but nothing happens.

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • When I open an event in iphoto it says there are no photos?

After the most recent update to iphoto events show 'no photos' The thumnails show and also change when i mouse over the events.
I have tried to contact Apple support but have had no response. Any help or ideas?
I would attach an image but that won't work either!!

Please do not use iPhoto to rebuild the library. Doing so breaks the brushed adjustments (at least) from Aperture.
    I cannot confirm this.
I made a new Library in iPhoto. Imported some images. Quit iPhoto.
Open the Library in Aperture. Brushed in some effects - most obviously, B&W. They are quite visible in Aperture.
    Quit Aperture.
    Opened the Library in iPhoto.
The brushed in effects are quite visible.
    I quit iPhoto.
I Rebuilt the library with iPhoto. I chose the 'Rebuild Library' command
I opened the Library in Aperture. No change. Brushed in effects are still there
I Quit Aperture and opened the Library in iPhoto. No change. The brushed in effects are still there
The fact that you are seeing this problem, along with difficulty seeing individual projects, suggests some corruption in your Library to me.

  • How can I add albums/events on iPhoto (for iPad)?

Why has phono changed so you no longer can search through events and only photos? I now have to scroll through 100's of photos to find the one I want. How can I get the event search back? This is not good!!!!!

First make sure this checkbox is checked in iPhoto's General preference pane:
What number is next to the Events icon in the left hand window?
When you click on the Events icon in the left hand pane what do you see in the right hand window?

First if you look at the library in the Finder what is the full name including the extension?
    Aperture Library.aplibrary
Second if highlight the library in the finder, right click and select Show Package Contents.
In the Finder window that opens select the file Info.plist and delete it.
Now try opening Aperture on the library.
Okay, just tried that -- no help....

  • FCPX Says Can't open duplicate event.... but it's not a duplicate?

Hi there, I'm trying to open an FCPX event that I moved to an external harddrive. After moving the event folder, I deleted the original event from my internal drive.
When I try to open the event from the external drive, FCPX Gives me the error warning saying that the event " is already open with the same identifier as..... (so the) the second document cannot be opened..." The directory path it gives for the "duplicate" events is exactly the same. It's considering the same file as a duplicate of itself.
I cannot open the Event. I have also tried opening from backup, as well as moving the backup folder out of the event folder in case it thought that was the duplicate. I have also trashed preferences.
Another odd thing: The project linked to the Event in question is opening fine. All media is connected. But the Event is not showing up at all in the Library in FCPX.
Any thoughts here? Thanks for your help!

You are right to suspect that first, however, there are no other drive connected to my computer when this error comes up, and I have triple checked that the event is not on the eternal.
Besides, reading the warning message, it says that it is looking at a file in the exact same directory as the file it claims is the duplicate..... hmm.... mystery.
