Can't open Aperture

When rying to open Aperture on my Macbbok I keep getting this advisory:
There was an error opening the database for the library “/Volumes/TOSHIBA External HD/Aperture Library.aplibrary”.
and the window then tells me to quit Aperture.
This problem began only a week ago and I have no idea why it now fails to work.
Anyone have any information that might help?
I have over 20,000 (yes .. twenty thousand) photos on this external hard drive
and need to recover them ASAP.
Thank you in advance if you can help.
I use a Macbook Pro , OSX 10.7.5
I use Aperture 3 but can't tell you the program number because I can't get it to
run long enough to get the info from the "about" page.

What is the version of your Aperture Library? Can you see the version number below the icon like this?
Aperture will access the iPhoo library with no problem ... but
when it comes to the Aperture library there seems to be an incompatability
between Aperture and the library .... I've no idea why.
It can either be the library or your Toshiba drive. That is why I asked, if you can read any library on that drive. Is your iPhoto library also on your Toshiba drive?
When I use the alt/option key and try to open Aperture it gives me
a small window that asks which library I wish to access - the iPhoto or
the Aperture libray. When I choose the Aperture library, I get the
usual advisory telling me there i the problem cited above.
From that panel use the button "Craete New" and create a new library on your drive. Add a few test photos. Does that work?
Check the format of that drive and the permissions.
Select your Toshiba drive in the sidebar and use the command "File > Get Info".
In the "General" brick you can see the format, and in the "Sharing& Permissions" brick the permissions. Enable the "Ignore Ownership on this volume" option, if it is available.

  • Can't open Aperture 3.2.4 after upgrade from 10.6.8 to 10.9

I just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks and everything looks fine, except for the fact that I can't open Aperture anymore. The dock icon is crossed out and when I click on it, I get the message "You can't open the application "Aperture" because it is not supported on this type of Mac.
I am running Aperture 3.2.4 which was the latest supported version under Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I was under the impression that I could upgrade to the latest version of Aperture under the new operating system....
--> What does that mean? My Mac was able to upgrade to the latest operating system but the applications are not??
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

    I tested this:
Reinstalled Aperture 3.1 from the Trial Installer.
In some way it seems to be working. But the whole thing is a scary Chimera.
It can create an Aperture library. I can import and edit images, even in Graphic Converter ias an external editor.
But the Media Browser does not show the aperture Library that I created.
The versioning is inconsistent. The library appears as an Aperture 3.4 library in the Finder.  Aperture 3.5 seems to be able to read this library and to upgrade it to 3.5
The Applications folder is showing the application as version 3.4 and as compatible. Spotlight is showing it as illegal.
When opening the chimera Aperture, I see plenty of warnings in the Console window:
    An Aperture "Hang" report
    xpcproxy assertion failed
com.apple.IconServiceAgent: main failed to composite image
    quicklookd: Warning
and more ... the hang was critical. I had to force quit Aperture more than once.
So be careful. I would not trust any important Aperture library to this patched application, without testing thoroughly. Be careful with your  precious photos.

Call Apple and make a appointment.
You have 3 months of care and up to 3 years with paid AppleCare, let them handle it and bring everything in.

I can't open Aperture 1.5.6 after updating to my mac10.6.8/Snow Leopard. What should I do. I don't want to lose all my pictures.

This may sound like I am repeating Allan Eckerts advice, but what he wrote has spelling errors that seems confusing or contradictory.

As you did not backup your photos now at least copy the Aperture Library to an external device like a Hard drive or USB.
I don't know  if Aperture 2 is still available for purchase, as Apple tends to discard older software so quickly.
Aperture 3 is now the latest,
Repost in the Aperture forum, for details on how you can best upgrade your Mac 10.6.8 OS to an Aperture version that will be able to rebuild your old library.

  • Why I can not open aperture 3.4?

After update first mountain lion 10.8.2 and after aperture 3.4, I can not open aperture app. Can someone help?
    Thanks!!!

What exactly is happening? If Aperture is crashing, when you are trying to launch it, deinstall Aperture by removing it from the Applications folder to the Trash. Then reinstall it from your original installation media (if you bought a retail version) or by downloading from the App Store, if you bought it there.

  • HT3805 Can't open Aperture, says I need to check file permissions. What can I do?

I was trying to add pictures to my Aperture library from another Aperture library in another account on the mac. When I dragged the file from the shared foder to Aperture it said it was merging libraries. I accidentally closed aperture while I was waiting. Now it will not allow me to open Aperture. The message says Aperture cannot access the library. To use the library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly. What can I do?

Hold down the option and commnad key's while starting Aperture this will open the library first aid window. Select Repair Permissions and you should be ok.
Post back if that doesn't fix your problem.
    regards

I can't open aperure. Following message appears: There was an error opening the database for library.

Try starting Aperture while holding down the command and option keys. This will open the library first aid window. Select library repair, when it is finished the library should open.

  • I can't open aperture-  I get this message:  There was an error opening the database for the library "/Users/Kristy/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary". :

I can't seem to open Aperture, don't know how to back up the library (I have pics I just put on Aperture last week that aren't backed up) so I can just rebuild the library.  Will I lose all my pics if I choose to rebuild the library?

don't know how to back up the library
Simply drag your Aperture library to an external drive with enough free disk space to make a backup copy for now.
What happened before you first got this error message? Did you import new images into Aperture? Did you install new software? Or update software?
Did you move your aperture library to a new location?
Does the panel with the error message show an error log? What does it say? The first 50 lines will suffice.
Will I lose all my pics if I choose to rebuild the library?
Rebuild is a save standard trouble shooting operations. But it may take a long time, and if your mac has other problems, in interruption of the rebuild may make things worse, so don't do it without copying your library some where safe.

  • Can't open aperture 3,  warning box comes up," warning there was an error opening the data base for the library /pictures/aperture library .aplibrary  Whats up?

I have had Aperture 3 loaded on my computer for a while now. Never had any problems till tonight. Restarted my computer and went to open Aperture and a "warning" box poped up, There was an error opening the data base for the library /picture/aperture library ap library.   Then a "quit" button.
What is going on and how can I open my aperture. I have pictures that need worked for clients.  Help!

Have you run through the steps in Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics. If not that's always a good place to start.
If that doesn;t resolve the problem when you post back describe your hardware and software setup.

  • TS3231 Help!! I can't open Aperture, I get a warning message and then it quits.

When I try to open Aperture, I get this message: "There was an error opening the database for the library “~/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary”. " Is there a way to fix this??
    Any help is really appreciated!!

Where is your Aperture Library located? On your System drive or on an external drive?
So I have tried the Troubleshooting basics, and none of them worked.
Have you tried all of them? Rebuilding the database? Removing the preferences?
If not, try those as well.
If that does not help, try id´f Aperture runs at all. Launch it with the⌥-key held down and create a new, empty library, by selecting other/new.
Try if you can work with this library and import images and edit image.
If this should succeed, check if you can import your old library into the new one by going to the File-menu and selecting "Import > Library".
Post back, if this does not succeed.

  • Can't open Aperture and can't access first aid dialog -- fixed by deleting .plist file

    Friends,
I have the latest updated version of Aperture running on an imac i7 and mountain lion.  When I try to open Aperture I receive an error message that says the library can't be opened/program quit unexpectedly.  Eventually it asks me if I want to repair the data base -- I say yes.  It runs the repair routine, but the problem remains.  I am unable to access the first aid dialog by cmd./option clicking on the library -- I receive the same error messages.
However, I am able to open the library in iphoto, so something is working right.
Any ideas?  I suppose I could uninstall/reinstall the program, but since I loaded it from a DVD, that would be cumbersome (unless everything's been transferred to the app store).
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!
    Steve

As I said above, you do not need your DVDs at all. You can download the Trial from here:
    Aperture 3.1 Trial.
That will install Aperture 3.1, after you moved your current Aperture to the Trash - see my post above. To upgrade from 3.1. go to the Apple menu - software update (this will redirect to the AppStore and you should be able to use it this way)- or use the download at the support page:
    Aperture 3.4
    Regards
    Léonie
Added: don't even try to open the Aperture 3.1 application after installing - it will not be able to open your current library - update immediately to aperture 3.4.

  • Can't open aperture on new mac book after restore. Also, no photos will restore

Received new mac book. Restored data from CrashPlan, but Aperture & photos unavailable, or can not find. When attempting to open Aperture the icon bounces, but does not open. Same for iphoto. When in Apple Store, Iphoto shows it is installed.

"Aperture 3 on your new Mac will be able to convert and to upgrade your current Aperture Library." - How ?
Do you have an external drive, where you can copy your Aperture Library to?
Make sure, this drive is formatted Mac OS X extended, before you copy the Aperture Library to it.
Also set the "Ignore Ownership" on this volume flag. (When you select your external drive in the Finder and use the "Get Info" command, you'll see this flag in the "Sharing and Permissions" brick.
You can simply drag the Aperture library to the external drive, using the Finder.
Then connect the drive to your new Mac.
Now you first need to repair your Aperture library - it is safer:
Select the Aperture library on the drive in the Finder. Hold down the ⌥⌘-keys and double click the library. Select "Repair Database" and let that run. That may take some time.
After this you should be able to double click the Library and to open it in Aperture 3 as regular library.
Without an external drive you need to copy using the Network or to mount your ols Mac in Target Disk mode http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3838?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US. Connect it to your new mac with USB or firewire and boot it with the T key held down.
Then your new mac will see the old one as external drive.
To extract only images from your saved Masters folder, select the Masters folder you copied in the Finder, then press ⌘F. In the search panel that opens add a search (press +) and set the search to "Kind is image".
This should show all images in the folder.
Caution! If the headline is set to "This Mac" and not to the name of the folder, you need to edit the preferences of the Finder. In the "Advanced" tab of the panel set the "When performing a search" to "Search this folder".
Don't touch any images in the search, if the heading shows "this mac". Then you are risking to move any image file on your mac.
