Can't open appleworks as an attachment

When opening appleworks 6 in an email attachment, it says the document is locked and to open as a copy. This happens every time I try to open an appleworks 6 attachment in emails. Is this a fix for this? It shouldn't ask to open as a copy and why is it locked?
Thanks

Hello
It is not specific to AppleWorks.
Every file attached to a message received thru Mail under Mac OS 10.3.x and dropped on the desktop get the "read only" attributes.
You may change that on a document basis thru the Show Infos Window in which you may set the file permissions to Read-Write.
An other formula is to use the "Save" button available in the header of a message with attachments. With this protocol, the files get the Read-Write permissions.
Late process, drag and drop the small paper-clip (which sit on the left of the attachments marker) on the desktop. The attached files will be dropped on the desktop. With Tiger they are Read-Write but, I don't know if it works the same under 10.3.x

  • Help? Adobe Acrobat 11 Standard - just purchased for windows 7 now I can't open pdf files or attach?

    Help!!!
I just puchased the latest Adobe Acrobat XI Standard.
I put in the Serial Key number but my computer tells me that a qualifying product could not be found on my computer so I can't use the adobe product. So now I can't open any files or attach pdf files onto emails without this message coming up. I've un-installed the "Adobe Acrobat XI Standard twice! with no luck.
I need it sorted ASAP as I'm trying to work! Any suggestions?

DotBellaParis if you are being asked for a qualifying product then it would appear you purchased an upgrade to Acrobat XI Standard.  You should have the opportunity to enter the serial number for your previous purchase of Acrobat.  You can find information on how to locate your previous serial numbers at http://forums.adobe.com/message/3987968#3987968?promoid=KBHJW.
If you did not intend to purchase an upgrade then I would recommend submitting a return request.  You can find more details on submitting a return at Return, cancel, or exchange an Adobe order - http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/return-cancel-or-change-order.html.  Once you have returned the upgrade you can then purchase the full version which will not ask you for a qualifying product or serial number.

  • I can't open Appleworks (or any appleworks documents)

I don't know what happened, but suddenly I can't open Appleworks. It disappeared from my dock. I made a new alias to put there. If I click on an Appleworks document the Alias icon bounces up and down once, and nothing else happens. Same if I click on the alias icon in the dock. If I click on Appleworks in the Applications menu nothing happens. If I highlight a file and try to open it under "Open With" under the File menu in Finder nothing happens. Any help anyone can provide would be appreciated, as I have a lot of important information stored in those documents. Thanks!

I had a similar problem & did what you said & AppleWorks opened from the desktop. What do I do with the folders on the desktop?
If you really applied what I described:
    +Drag the folder:+
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:AppleWorks:
    +and the file:+
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.appleworks.pli st
    +on the Desktop.+
and if in this case AppleWorks.6 behaves correctly, you may trash the items which I asked you to move on the desktop.
Often, it's a good idea to open the
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:AppleWorks:
folder which you moved on the desktop ,
grab the "AppleWorks 6 Button Bars" file and move it in the newly created
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:AppleWorks: folder.
Doing that you will recover your set of custom buttons; Of course if you didn't created custom buttons this task is unneeded.

  • Can't open Appleworks

I was erasing the free space on my disk tonight in order to get rid of some data that I had deleted and happened to open appleworks and create a document while I was waiting. The only funny thing that happened was a message "your startup disk is full". I didn't do anything else after that and the disk utility finished and then couldn't close appleworks and the document that I was working on. I read many other posts and dumped all of the preferences and recent items and disabled items and ran a repair on disk permissions. Still can't open Appleworks. No problems with any other programs. What to do now? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
imac power pc G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Appleworks 6.2.9

Where does it say you still have AppleWorks 6.2.7? Is it in Get Info? The splash screen when starting AppleWorks or in About AppleWorks while AppleWorks is running?
If you tried reinstalling AppleWorks, updating it, deleting preferences & recent items or repairing permissions while AppleWorks was running, none of those steps will be effective. You must quit AppleWorks first. Also, you must be logged in as an administrator to install or update AppleWorks. After installing or updating you must then repair permissions & delete the AppleWorks preferences before starting AppleWorks. I'm sure you checked, but to make sure you delete all of the AppleWorks preferences (there are four in two places for each user), take a look at my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly.

  • Can iWorks Open AppleWorks Documents?

Can iWorks open an AppleWorks word processing document?
Can iWorks open an AppleWorks database?  Does it import it into an iWorks spreadsheet?
I want to open my AppleWorks-based mail merge documents without having to convert them to Microsoft Office.
    Thanks.

The iWork (no 's') applications - Keynote, Pages & Numbers - can only open AppleWorks 6 presentation, word processing & spreadsheet documents, respectively. They will not open any other type of AppleWorks 6 files or any AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks files.
The third-party application, EazyDraw, can open AppleWorks draw documents. If you still have access to AppleWorks you can copy the contents of draw documents, paste them into an AppleWorks word processing document in object mode (click the arrow in the tool panel), save the WP document & then open it in Pages. You can copy & paste from AppleWorks to Pages but you would have to do it object by object or it will be one big uneditable object.
There is nothing other than AppleWorks that can open paint or database documents. Database data can be copied & pasted into an AppleWorks spreadsheet, saved & opened in Numbers or saved as ASCII/plain text & opened in most any spreadsheet, database or word processing program. Pages can merge from an Numbers spreadsheet or AddressBook. Since copying & pasting from database to spreadsheet won't copy & paste the column titles, you will need to enter them manually & then define that row as a header row in Numbers in order to use it for merging with Pages.
Paint documents can be saved as one of many different formats to be opened in most image editing programs. I recommend using PICT for best results.

    Hi Alex,
The trick to this whole thing is to scroll to the bottom of the message. There should be a dashed line at the bottom of the email message with text underneath it that says, "This message was downloaded as plain text." Underneath that it should say (in blue hyperlink text) "Download full message". Select that hyperlink, and the Excel file should download completely. You should then be able to select the document and have it open correctly.
I have had the same concern regardless of file format that is sent, so I do not believe your issue is with file format. Hope this helps.
I've seen the same thing happen with images, which it displays in a corrupted form. It's fixed by downloading the full message.
There's a more serious side effect of this, which I've now seen with several types of files. If one FORWARDS the email to someone else, the attached files it sends them are CORRUPTED and unopenable too. In the case of a Word files I looked at, it had dropped the last two bytes of the file.
The workaround for that is to download the full message before forwarding.
I'm seeing this happening with so many types of attachments that I'm assuming it affects them all. Please everyone report this to Apple feedback (http://www.apple.com/feedback/). It's one thing not being able to open a file on your device, it's another to have files corrupted permanently just by forwarding.

  • How can I open AppleWorks 6 files using Pages or Word?

I am currently running Mac OS X v.10.4.11, but I am turning in my old mac for a new one in about a week. Almost all of my important files are AppleWorks 6 files and my new mac will not have this program since it has been replaced with Pages. I currently have AppleWorks 6, Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac, and Pages 08 on my old mac. I am unsure as to what applications I will have on my new mac (I am a teacher and the macs are school computers so I do not have control over the software), but I think it will have both Word 2008 and Pages 08 or 09. So far I have not had any luck opening my AppleWorks files in Pages or Word. I have been able to copy and paste the AppleWorks files into Pages (they are mostly Draw documents, not simple word processing), but they become an image so I cannot edit the content. I need to be able to edit my documents on my new computer and do not have time to open each AppleWorks file and copy it to Pages anyway. Any suggestions to help me with this compatibility problem?

AppleWorks will run fine on your new Mac, though if you transfer it from the old one you should delete it from there to stay within the terms of the licence. You would need to copy the Appleworks folder over, not just the application.
Pages can open Appleworks 6 word processing documents, Numbers can open Appleworks 6 spreadsheets. It's possible to open AW Draw documents in Eazydraw, or in Pages through a workaround. Nothing will open AW Database documents.
I have written a detailed article going into the process of migrating from Appleworks, including the workaround for Draw>Pages:

  • Can't open appleworks file / resource fork issue

    Hi,
I've just readt the post "Can't open old appleworks/clarisworks files".
My problem was that I got a "I/O error" when trying to open some appleworks files with appleworks 6.2.9.
I realize that I copy those file from my previous disk to a PC formated CD. Hence, some resource fork files should miss.
BUT, I don't have anymore the original files since I re-install my Mac...
If there a way to recover my files despite of this resource fork issue ? Is it possible to create again the resource fork file ?
    Christophe

It's not a resource fork problem. If it were, adding the .cwk extension to the file name would likely fix it. AppleWorks 6.2.9 (the current version) can't open all ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. It gives an I/O error. There doesn't appear to be a way to predict which files will cause problems. I've had it happen & not happen with all AppleWorks file types. These files can be opened by any other version of AppleWorks 6, including the OS 8/9 component 6.2.8. If you have the retail version of AppleWorks 6.2.9 or your “consumer” Mac came with an earlier version of AppleWorks 6 that you have updated to 6.2.9 & have Classic installed, you can "Force" AppleWorks 6 to open in Classic to open the files, save them as AW 6 files & then open them in the OS X version. Also, if you have Classic installed & have AppleWorks 5, this can be used to open the ClarisWorks files & save them as AppleWorks 5 which AppleWorks 6.2.9 can open.

  • Can't open AppleWorks files

We just bought a new iMac with iWork. My husband started transferring his old files to it, but he can't open them. What do we need to convert .cwk files to iWork files?

Is there a way to copy AppleWorks from the iMac G5 to the new computer? Then he can just keep using the old databases.
You can copy the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from the old Mac to the new one, placing it in the Applications folder. Make sure you include all of the support folders as well. If you have customized the Button Bar I would move that preference file to the new Mac. It's located in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences > AppleWorks. Do not move any of the other preferences. I suggest burning the AppleWorks 6 folder & the Button Bar preferences to a CD so that you will have a backup copy should you ever need to reinstall again. To remain within the Apple software license, you need to remove the copy from the old Mac.
Also, is there a way to remove the .cwk universally, rather than one file at a time?
The user tip I linked to above can explain how to have AppleScript change whole folders of file names. I wouldn't remove the .cwk extension, though. It's better to have it than not.

  • HT5663 why I can not open an icloud email attachment with iworks application in icloud directly?

    Hi,
I like this iwork solution in icloud, but the integrity might be developed more. If I got an email to my icloud inbox, I can not open it with iworks application but it will be downloaded instead. It would be very useful to be able to open an attachment onsite, using one of the iworks app.

  • Help!  Can't open Appleworks documents on my Intel Mac.

Just bought a new Intel iMac to replace my old G4 iMac but have just had a shock discovering that i can only open (some) of my old documents which i copied to my external hard drive using Keynote and Pages, but not all of them.
That in itself is annoying enough seeing as they don't come as part of the operating system, unlike Appleworks did.
    Any suggestions?
I can always plug in the old Mac but that defeats the object of buying the new one somewhat.

Thanks for the reply Brie Fly, thankfully i've managed to control my frustration and i've sorted the problem. I plugged the old mac back in to the external hard drive, copied Appleworks onto it, plugged the hard drive into the new mac and presto! it works. Obvious really, i think the initial frustration clouded my thinking!

    Ok,

When I get to the box where the choice of skins are, right
    above it, the choices are:
    Section 508 Compliant Output
    W3C Compliant Topics
I double checked RoboHelps Help...and it says Robohelp for
    Word 6, Build 99.
    Colum...
Here's what I did (I 'thought', I'd start off simple, lol)...
    1. Start Robo.
    2. Select New Project.
    3. The left panel contains all of the folders (I think its
    called Explorer).
The right panel is the default Helpfile word document that
    contains the 'welcome' message.
    4. I added my spreadsheet to the Baggage folder.
    5. Back at the word document, I just added a simple word
    'excel'.
    6. Then I highlighted 'excel', Insert->Hyperlink...and
pointed it to my excel spreadsheet.
    7. Saved it.
    8. Generated it.
Everything opens up fine in IE. Excel is highlighted blue and
    underlined. But its not clickable.

  • Can't open AppleWorks as well as several others

When I try to open Appleworks, as well as several other applications, I get a message that says: apple Works could not be launched because of a shared library error "1<AppleWorks><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_LaunchServices>"
The same message with Palm Desktop, Language Now,Transport Monitor, and maybe some others.
This first occurred a few days ago after my wife downloaded 3 items in software update; one of which was a Quicktime update.
    Help Please?

    Hello
My guess is that the "offending" upgrade where made "on the fly" from "Application Updater".
I never do that. I just accept to downoad the updater.
I apply them later when I know that all other apps are closed and possibly than third party extensions are disabled.
