Can't open attachments in mail, all I can do is save files.

Before I updated to ios5, I was able to open mail attachments by choosing an app. Now all I can do is save the file. If I use gmail directly, I can use an app to view an avi file so it's not the app as I had previously thought. Any suggestions?

That would be a good guess, and it will probably be addressed in an upcoming update, but it sounds like you are getting along OK for now

    Thanks,

Port a legacy font from the FM7 machine to the FM12 machine, such as Type1 Times, and convert the document to that on the FM12 machine.
This may not completely solve the problem, as FM8 and later, when opening a pre-FM8 document, appears to convert some things to Unicode code points (even to the point of synthesizing a Unicode encoding of a legacy font, see Re: Adding the Trademark symbol to a document). Saving back to MIF7 probably does not convert the code points back, and FM7 may well complain, or crash, or something.
If the problem is limited to certain special characters, like ™, there may be work-arounds, like invoking them only as Variables.
This Unicode border between FM7.2 and FM8 may prove to be one-way for many documents, rather like the spikes at the exit of rental car lots. Do not back up. Extreme document damage may result.

  • Can I safely save files to the external harddrive I am using as/for a Time Machine?

Can I safely save files to the external harddrive I am using as/for a Time Machine?

Because ALL Hard Drives fail. They have been since they were invented. It is just a fact of Spinning hard drives.
No nothing special about how TM writes to the drive.
Any hard drive can fail at any time. The day you take it out of the box and plug it in to 10+ years later or anytime in between. Kind of like Life. At some point it ends for everyone. Some sooner some much later.
I've had some work for years, like 7++ running 24/7. Others have died in months to a few years. I've had externals died faster then internal drive and the funny part is an external drive is nothing but the same type drive used Inside a computer, an Internal drive, put into an External case. But most of the time when an external dies it is not the drive itself but the Enclosures Electronic that fail. Removing the physical drive from the enclosure and using a SATA, or IDE, to USB Adapter the drives are usually still good. I've even taken dead externals and removed the drive and put that drive inside a computer case and they work for X number of years. But that doesn't mean that All Drives are like that.

  • Can't open attachments from Mail since downloading Lion...

I have recently updated to Lion and since then I'm unable to open attachments in my email - either attachments received or documents I've attached to an email I'm composing. The app - Pages, Numbers, etc. - will open, but nothing happens after that.
When trying to open email attachments the document will open in Preview, but if I select "Open in Pages/Numbers" it gets stalled, as described above.
My only option seems to be to save the document and then open through the app or Finder, extra steps I'd rather not always have to take.
    Help?

I'm having the same problem.  I know there's an attachment.  I can see the paper clip in the listing of e-mails, but when I open the e-mail, there's nothing to launch to see the attachment!

  • Any way to open attachments via Mail?

I have my iPhone 4 mail sync with Exchange server over the air. It works great. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to open attachments to email messages (I do have a document viewer for PDF, etc installed). When I view the message, there is nothing to tap on to open/view the attachment.
In the subject view, I can se that the message has an attachment (paperclip icon). When I forwad the email, the attachment does get forwarded. But how do I VIEW the attachment?

Duh... I didn't scroll all the way to the end of the message where the icon to open the attachment appears.

  • I cannot open attachments in Mail

Suddenly, I cannot open any attachments in mail.

I see it's been sometime since this problem was posted, but in case it's helpful...
I found a solution to be to goto "View," then, "Message," and then choose "Best Alternative."
This suddently allowed the attachment to be visible for me. I am not certain why this happens, may be related to Outlook 2011 formats for sending emails, but this is merely conjecture. I tested some emails (both to iCloud and Gmail) with attachments and did not have the same problem.
    Hope this helps!

  • Ipad2 won't open attachments in mail app

I have an iPad 2 on 5.0.1. I am unable to open photos, docs or PDF files that are sent to me via email. These same files open fine on my iPhone and Mac.
On the iPad the attachments have an arrow on them. One click on it and a fast wheel spins but nothing opens. A click and hold does nothing.
    What am I missing here?

How about something really crazy and unheard of?
I have two email accounts with Google Mail.  Both are the only ones set up in the Mail app inside my iPad2.  One would load everything: .jpeg, .docx, .pdf, and everything.  The other would not.
I tried hard reset multiple times, deleting both email accounts and hard resetting.  I cut all processes using SBSettings and killed all processes related to mail.  So I have nothing running now, and I deleted all of the readers (Adobe Reader, Goodreader, Doc to Go, Quick Office), and other apps I had added.
Now I have nothing running and no apps installed.
Then I set up mail again from the bottom, as if the iPad came in the mail today.  One gmail account still automatically opens and previews .jpg attachments, and show .doc, .pdf attachments with their respective icons.  THE OTHER GMAIL ACCOUNT IN THE SAME iPAD MAIL APP DOES NOT OPEN THE SAME MESSAGES I HAVE FORWARDED TO BOTH.  I would see an arrow pointed down in the icon inside that "faulty" mail account, and the name of the attachment below the icon.  I have pressed my finger a gadzillion times on those icons, only to see the spinning wheel briefly and nothing.  Holding them down would do nothing, and i can't open in other apps.
The wackiest thing is... when I hit forward (by tapping the curved arrow at the top), I get a drop-down choice list: "INCLUDE" and "DON'T INCLUDE" attachments.  When I tap on INCLUDE, .jpg files immediately load and show in the reply message, only two of four .pdfs load and open, but no .docx attachments would.
How would we be supposed to troubleshoot or fix something like this?

  • E50 Problem opening attachments in Mail For Exchan...

    Hi,
I am helping out a user at our office with a Nokia E50 and we can't manage to open/save attachments from emails.
If we try we get an error message explaining that there's a problem with the connection. However downloading mail works flawless so there shouldn't be any problems with the connection.
Other users with other brands / models does not share this issue so there should not be any problems with server.
The phone is using the latest stable phone software and Mail For Exchange 1.5.0.
    Any suggestions?
    /Danny

Not sure why you can't add attachments other than by dragging onto a new Mail window, but you might want to make sure that you have Windows-Friendly Attachments selected in Mail's Edit menu. Also, clicking on the attachment in the body of the email and selecting 'view as icon' sometimes helps recipients receive the attachment.
On a general note, sometimes Mail's handling of attachments is lacking, in my experience - especially when sending them to PC-users. Most users don't seem to have a problem but some do. The only way I have managed to ensure that Mail handles all attachments as hoped and ensure that recipients have no problems with them is to install the paid for plugin called Attachment Tamer. You can run it in demo mode to test it before deciding to buy: http://lokiware.info/
(I've no connection with Lokiware, just happy to recommend their software which I have used for some years).

  • Word won't open attachments in Mail

    Hi,
I'm using Mail to get my email via POP. When attachments come with a message, I have problem opening them when they're Word documents. I get the error "The application “Microsoft Word” failed to open the attachment “Chasteen Resume SEPT 2007.doc”. Would you like to save the file to disk?"
When it's a PDF, and I click on it, Preview automatically opens and opens the attachment without a problem.

    Hi Ernie,
Yes, if I save them, they open without issue.
In fact, if I choose "open with" and choose "MS Word" then it opens in Word. However, there are two entries for "MS Word" in that list of available applications -- one works and one doesn't. So it appears that Mail thinks that my MS Word application lives somewhere that it doesn't, but if I manually tell it where Word is, then it is fine.
I'm not sure what you mean by "Is you copy of Mail located in the Microsoft Office folder (2004?) in the Applications folder?". Both Mail and the MS Office folder are located in the Applications folder. Should I put Mail inside the MS Office folder?
"In Mail Preferences/General what are your setting regarding the Download folder?"
It's set to the default "Mail downloads" folder. When I change it to a particular folder (eg., a downloads folder in my Documents folder" that doesn't help.

  • Cannot open attachments in Mail

The only attachments I have tried to open are audio and video.
I am using Firefox,  and read about the plugins.  They are up to date.  Did not appear to be the problem.
Unless I am missing something.  I did clear the cache.
Also,  if this is related?   I am getting a message that my wireless keyboard batteries are low and should be changed.
I am not using that keyboard.   I am using the one that connects with a USB.
I closed Firefox and used Safari to get to discussions.   For some reason my Discussions file would not open.   I decided to just switch for this question.

The problem stopped by itself.   OK now.

Has anyone else experienced the iphone locking up when opening email attachments after updating to v1.1.1? I get a blank screen with the spinning icon and have to force reboot. Suggestions? thanks

Here is some info on the problem. Sending plain text instead of rich text is the easiest thing to try.

  • Can no longer save files in Motion 2

I have been working on a project in Motion all week (2.1.2). Tonight I tried creating a new file, and I couldn't save it - no dialogue box appears at all. I opened up the file I've been working on all week, made a minor change to see if I could save that file, and I couldn't. Export is not working either. I have searched discussions to find an answer, but nothing has helped. I deleted the com.apple.motion.plist file, but that didn't work. I also tried reinstalling and am currently now on 2.1, hoping that it would help to not run the upgrade to 2.1.2, but it still won't save. I have a huge deadline coming up fast, and I don't know what to do! The only explanation I can come up with is the updates that I ran earlier today, which included the following:
    Mac OS X 10.6.7
    iDVD 7.1.1
    Garageband 6.0.2
    iWeb 3.0.3
    Safari 5.0.4
    iTunes 10.2.1
    Digital camera raw..3.6
    Java Update 4 1.0
    Any suggestions??

the problem is likely related to the fact that you're running an extremely old version of Motion, and the most recent version of Mac OS. I'm surprised it'll run at all. Of the updates you listed that's the most likely culprit. See if you can revert.
On a separate note, if you are working with obsolete software (5 years is a lifetime in software terms), you have to be EXTREMELY careful about updating your working configuration in any way. There's nothing wrong working with outdated software. If it serves your needs and you don't have to upgrade (or can't spend the money), that's fine. But understand that as other programs like the OS are updated, their compatibility with older software becomes more and more unlikely.
The way to do it, is to find the configuration that works best, and then stop updating. Don't update until you HAVE to, and realize that it'll likely force you to update a lot of your programs.
