Can't open Classic in OS X.4.3

I recently installed OS X.4 Tiger on my Dual 450 and then the upgrade OS X.4.3. Classic did not install and I had been told I needed to install it separately, but the single disc I got with my purchased OS X.4 (bought from the Apple store) did not seem to have Classic on it. So I used the extra software disc that came with my iMac (on which I had successfully installed Classic) and installed Classic (system 9.2.2) on my Dual 450.
Classic looks like it is installed but when I try to open it the icon in the dock bounces up and down and then I get a message that "Mac OS ROM file is not available. It is either damaged or not installed." However, I can see the ROM file in my system folder.
What can I do to open Classic? I have tried reinstalling everything and that does not work.
Should I have gotten a separate CD Installatin disc when I bought Tiger? Maybe one was left out of the box. Maybe the OS ROM file for the iMac does not work with my Dual 450.
Any suggestions? I tried calling Apple Care and was put on hold for over an hour today.

Did you do an erase and install? If not, if
Classic
was installed before, it should still be
installed.
I did an erase and install. It was the only way I
could get OS X.4 to install. When I tried to archive
and install the computer crashed (several times)
Ah. Usually this means that something in the directory was corrupted.
OS X doesn't come with Classic anymore.
I found that out.
Steve did 'bury' OS 9 several years back.
[snip]
Do you have the OS 9 CD for the 450? You could try
copying the Mac OS ROM file from that CD over to
the
OS 9 System Folder on the 450 and see what
happens.
I tried that. Just tried it again. No luck. OS
X.4.3 does not want to recognize any OS ROM file. I
also tried to select the system 9.2.2 from my backup
hard drive as the one for OS X.4.3 to use to open
Classic. Also no luck. Same message: "The Classic
Mac OS ROM file is missing or damaged."
This is strange. My primary Classic folder is an old OS 9 System Folder on a FireWire drive. That System Folder started out as an OS 8.1 System Folder on an external SCSI drive attached to a 7200, and was upgraded over time to an OS 9.1 System Folder on the same SCSI drive attached to a beige G3, and then was copied over to a FireWIre drive and updated to OS 9.2.2 and attached to a first generation eMac. The successor to that FireWire drive is now attached to a 1.25GHz eMac, OS X 10.4.3, works fine...
I have tried to reinstall OS X.4 with no success.
You don't need to install OS X 10.4, you need to reinstall OS 9.
I called AppleCare today and was basically told that
Apple will not support Classic any more and that on
an older machine I may have no luck. Obviously I
find this hard to accept. All I need is a Mac OS ROM
file that the computer will see. But where can I get
that?
If Apple is making OS 9.2.2 impossible to access,
what happens to archived files on programs that need
OS 9?
What I'd do is to:
1 back everything up. I mean everything.
2 find the OS 9 system disc which came with the Dual 450. Boot from it, run Drive Setup and format the hard disk. This will kill all directory corruption stone dead.
3 install OS 9 from the CD.
4 update OS 9 to 9.2.2, either via Software Update or via a previously downloaded updater.
5 reboot and make sure that it all works.
6 now install OS X 10.4. You shouldn't need to do anything other than an upgrade install.
7 boot in OS X, make sure that everything works, especially including Classic, update to 10.4.3 either via Software Update or a previously downloaded updater. Reboot and make sure everything still works.
8 restore your data from backup.
Did you do a backup before running the install? If
so, you can simply restore your OS 9 System
Folder.
I did do a backup and it is on another hard drive.
The computer does open on that hard drive and so far
works just fine in OS 9.2.2 on that HD. but I can't
go back and forth between OS X and OS 9 that way.
Hmmm... you can't tell Classic to run from that disk? I'd try to get Classic to run from that hard disk before going to the trouble of doing a complete reformat and reinstall. I've got various different OS 9 folders around here, one on the internal drive in my eMac, one on my boot FireWire drive, and several others on other drives. The one on the eMac's internal drive is the vanilla System Folder as installed by Apple's system discs for the eMac, the one on the boot FireWire drive is my heavily customised System Folder with all the fonts and extensions and whatnot that I've accumulated over the years, and the others are System Folders rigged for specific tasks, such as playing a certain old game which barfs if certain extensions are loaded. I can get Classic to load from any of them, as required. If there's a problem getting Classic to load, you may have other, more serious, problems that you don't know about yet.
So every time I switch to a program that requires
OS X I need to restart the computer using that start
up disc. Not exactly convenient.
You should not have to do this.
Any other suggestions on how to get Classic to run as
part of my OS X.4.3?
Thank you for trying. It is much appreciated.
I've never seen this particular problem, so I'd like to know more about what goes on.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know some details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is you library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • How can I open a document created in Classic on MacOS X?  When I tried to open it, it says Classic Not Supported. What do I do?

How can I open a document created in Classic on MacOS X?  When I tried to open it, it says Classic Not Supported. What do I do?

    The short answer is:
Single click on the document you created in Classic, bring up your 'popup' menu (right click or control-click), select 'Open With' and choose the Mac OS X application you believe will open the document.
If this does not work. Tell us which Classic application you created the document with and which applications you have which you believe will open your 'classic' document.

I am not able to install my 'Complete National Geographic' cd on my Mac mini which runs Lion OS. The error message I get says  'Can't open installer as classic environment is no longer supported' can some one suggest a solution.

It means the software is PowerPC code, which is no longer supported in Lion. Your choices are to go back to Snow Leopard, run Snow Leopard Server in a virtual machine within Lion, see if the vendor has an updated version of National Geographic that will run on an Intel Mac, or run the software on an older Mac separately.

  • Error message: 'you can't open the application because the Classic environment is no longer supported'

I get the error message 'you can't open the application because the Classic environment is no longer supported', when will this issue be fixed? I need to use a program to analyse videos called 'J watcher' that is vital for my thesis. It worked in the last operating system but refuses to open in this one. When will this issue be fixed/what can I do about it?

Is there any way to fix this?
    Yes, but it's not easy.
I've only tested this on Snow Leopard, but I think it will work in Lion. You need to have Java installed, which it's not by default in Lion. Since I'm not using Lion myself, I can't tell you how to do that.
Download the Java/Mac version (1.0) of the application from JWatcher Downloads. You'll get a zip archive. Expand it. Now you have an application called "JWatcher_V1.0." This is only the installer. It won't run, because it has PowerPC-only version of the Java application stub.
Select the line of text below in your browser and copy it to the clipboard:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/Resources/MacOS
In the Finder, select Go > Go to Folder... from the menu bar (this menu may be slightly different in Lion.) Paste the clipboard contents into the text box. You should now see a folder with two files in it, one of which is named "JavaApplicationStub." Leave that window open.
Now right-click on the icon of JWatcher_V1.0 and select "Show Package Contents" from the contextual menu. A new Finder window opens. Open the folder called "MacOS". Inside that folder is a file also named "JWatcher_V1.0". Move it to the Trash. Drag the file JavaApplicationStub to where it was. Rename the file (it will be copied, not moved) JWatcher_V1.0. Close the Finder window.
Now double-click the installer. It should launch. Install the application wherever you choose. You're not done yet.
The installer creates a folder named, once again, "JWatcher_V1.0". Inside it is an application. That, too, is named "JWatcher_V1.0". Select it, and do exactly the same thing you did before with the installer: replace the binary inside with a copy of JavaApplicationStub.
You should now be able to run it.

  • Can not open email attachments in yahoo mail

I can not open any attachments in my yahoo email account using firefox. However I can open them in IE. Please help!

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
(You also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now")
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first) using either of these. While viewing a page on the site:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

  • Noobie - script trying to open classic when it's not needed

I need some help. I have written a short, simple script that I hope will work to open an index.htm file in a users default browser when it is run from a cd. I have a disk that basically contains a website with links on the disc and links to the web. Of course in windows I am using autorun to start the index file, but for Mac I am opening a finder window with an icon for this script so that the user has a clean interface and does not have to search for the index file.
The problem is that after compiling and testing my script it works fine, but when I save it as an app it tries to open Classic everytime. I don't want it to do this. This is for OS X only and it should be opening the file in Safari or Firefox so there is no need for classic.
In the Save As dialog box there is no check box to require classic it just automatically saves it that way. When I click on the saved app and choose "get info" is gives the filetype as "Application (classic)"
I am using Script Editor 2.1.1.
    Here's the script:
    try
    tell application "Finder"
    open file "BIB_5113:index.htm"
    end tell
    on error
    beep
display dialog "Oops: " & "Please Insert your course CD and try again. " buttons {"OK"} default button 1
    end try
Can someone please help, I have searched here, googled and posted at the MacScripter forums with no luck.
    Thanks for your help.
    K

OK, update - By saving as "Application Bundle" I now have the script working, somewhat. Now I need to know if and how I can get the script to see an invisable file. I am using Toast 7 to burn a Mac/PC disc and I have all of the files hidden. The script runs but it does not find the index.htm file.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

  • Can not open itunes.

Get the following message from itunes when i try to open it: The file “iTunes Library.itl” cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Would you like to download iTunes now? I then press yes and the macs look for new updates and then tells me that everything is updated.  I use a mac and everything is backed up by icloud.
The problem started when I had to reset my ipod classic as i for some reason could not add anything new to it - I then reset the thing and spent hours manually adding the music and books I wanted to go on it. When I disconnected - I had nothing on the ipod!  I then restarted my mac and reconnected the ipod and all of a sudden the look and feel of itunes had changed - I thought it has updated even if I was not awaire of it.  As I did not understand the new layout I accedently pressed some button who synked my whole library and the ipod now works, all though it is very full and now I can not open my itunes libary.
This latest incident comes after a week of itunes **** - I have already spent two hours at the genious bar sorting out our ipod thouch after that did not work due to upgrades from apple.  Why does it have to be like this? Why do i have to spend hours of my buzy time going to the genious bar, looing at forums, writing to forums when all my devises worked properly before these updates?  I have seen some answers to this problem on the forum, but they all seem very complicated and I don't know if it will work with icloud.  I am afraid of accidently deleting some of my music if I start messing around in the background.  Does anybody know a simple solution to this or should I book another appointment with the genious bar which would take about 5 hours of my life?
All the best from a very frustrated
    Viil Fjose

did you install an older version of iTunes?
either upgrade to the latest, or you might find an older back-up copy of your iTunes Library.itl in
    \My Documents\My Music\iTunes\Previous iTunes Libraries\
if not, and the latest version doesn't fix your problem, then you might wish to delete iTunes Library.itl and start again
