Can't open CR2 files in CS3 after recovery from memory card deletion

I accidentally deleted some photos from a memory card. I recovered them using software called "Recover My Files". This software recovered the files but now I can't open them in CS3. I took these with an old Canon Rebel DSLR and they should not need converting, they opened fine before I deleted them. Any advice much appreciated. I really need these photos. Thanks.

Thanks, I ended up doing another recovery with PhotoRec freeware, it worked and I got all of the photos back. A bit tedious to use but free. I  must have downloaded five or  six recovery softwares but a lot of them can't retrieve raw files very well.

  • Can't open CR2 files in photoshop and camera raw

This weekend I rented a Canon 5D Mark iii. I have downloaded the files and all of the thumbnails in camera raw say CR2 and when I try to open Photoshop does not recognize this product.
    I have:
    Photoshop CS4
    Camera Raw CS4
    Canon 5D Mark ii
I have checked my updates folder and all my updates are current. Do I need to upgrade to CS5 or is there a way around this?

Hi I recently had a problem opening CR2 files in PHotoshop cs4. I had to reinstall into a new computer, so obviously it installed the basic programme and not the updates.
After trying everything, even calling the help desk, there was apparently nothing that can be donw as they no longer support cs4.
I kept trying and found a you tube video, which i cant find again to add the link but i followed the link and with what I did earlier I can now open CR2 files in my photoshop cs4
I found the relevany update that I needed to install and downloaded it, camera raw 5.2 ( Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Camera Raw 5.2 update )  this is the one for the Canon 5d Mk2
After downloading it would not update the progeramme so I was in the same possition, but i noticed the files were there and i just needed to put them in the right place in photoshop so carried on looking for were to put the Plus In.
This led me to the video.
    To the point.
Download the update and save to a location where you will remember.
open Adobe photoshop and go to "edit"
    Them " Preferences "
    then "General "
    Then " Plus-Ins"
At the top you will see " Add Plug-Ins Folder " Check this box then navigate to the "win64" ( this is because mine is a windows 64 bit computer and the download is specific ) and Choose it.
Shut down photo shop and try to open a raw.
Bridge doesnt work for some reason but im going to keep looking.
Hope this works for you as well.

  • Can't open RAW files in CS3 or Bridge

I am using PowerMac G4 running OS 10.4.10, one gig RAM, with an Nvidia Geforce 4 MX graphics card. Adobe Updated notified me the new Camera RAW plugin was available so I said yes to install it. The installer hung half way through and I had to force quit it. Since then I can't open RAW (Nikon NEF) files in Bridge or CS3. I get generic raw file thumbnails in Bridge and the error "Could Not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this file type" when trying to open one into ACR from Bridge or Photoshop. I tried d'loading the plug-in and manually putting it in the proper folder, still no good. I have reinstalled the program from the install disk, purged the main and folder cache in Bridge, deleted the PS preferences (command+alt+ shift when opening PS), repaired OS permissions, and the like, all to no avail. Photoshop or Bridge just don't see the plug-in when opening NEF files, though it does show in the "Bout P, which is in the proper place- root/library/application support/adobe/plug-ins/CS3/file formats/camera RAW Plugin
    How can I fix it?

Greetings! I am having the same problem.
I'm a graphic designer (not a photographer), working on Mac 10.4.11, CS3 (ps is 10.0.1, bridge is 2.1.1.9) with the latest ACR plug-in (4.3.1) and the latest DNG Converter. Our photo library is on a server, accessed by multiple computers.
We can preview .CR2 in Bridge, open .CR2 in PS.
6However, we cannot preview or open .CRW files. We have tested on three machines, all with the same problem. In the past (before CS3) we were able to open and process these files.
Tried opening .CR2 files in CS2 and couldn't. Couldn't open them with DNG Converter or Graphix Converter.
Have tried all the standards fixes:
    1. Correctly updated the most recent Camera Raw plug-in, following Adobes very explicit instructions as to where the plug-in goes (checked it three times).
    2. Removed a copy of the Camera Raw plugin from a secondary folder, hoping that might have caused conflict.
    3. Reset my preferences in Photoshop and Bridge to default.
    4. Purged the cache in Bridge (via TOOLS, not in preferences) and refreshed AND told Bridge to build new thumbnails/caches
    5. Closed/reopened Bridge.
    6. Repaired permissions
    7. Restarted my computer
We are going to try to find a disc with original RAW photos that have never been placed on the server to see if it's a server issue. However I'm thinking that's not the problem.
Any ideas as to why we can no longer open these CRW files?
I have two problems I need to solve:
    1. For future photoshoots: does turning OFF sRAW setting help prevent this problem?
    2. Is there anyway to convert the .CR2 files without using Photoshop CS3/2 or DNG Converter? We're hoping to try to salvage the photos we have.
I did see Elev Man's comment about the problem being corrupt files...disk failure/problem fixed with Disk Warrior. I'll also check that out.
    Thanks!

  • Can't Open CR2 Files

I've been using CS2 on my iMac for a couple of years. Just got a new computer, a MacBook Pro, and installed CS2 on the new computer.  When I try to open any photos from my Canon 50D, I get a message telling me that "Photoshop does not recognize this type of file"
    What?
Since when can't PS open CR2 files? it can on my iMac.
What the heck could have happened?

You answered your own questions, you might just not realize it.
As I said above "LR 2.4 will have no problem reading the D50's CR2 files, but you still won't be able 'Edit in Photoshop' without converting them to a format CS2 can read.  LR would need to convert them to TIFF."
In short on your iMac you were using LR to convert to TIFF before editing in CS2.
You can install LR 2.4 on your MacBook and still do that by tellign LR 2.4 on your MacBook to convert to TIFF and again edit in Photoshop CS2.
After installing LR 2.4, in LR goto Preferences -> External Editing, set it to convert to TIFF/ProPhoto/16Bit (usually that's the default).
It sounds like you've changed your workflow.  On your iMac you were using LR to convert prior to CS2, on you MacBook you can do the same, but you should be able to open a 50D CR2 directly the CS2 on either machine.

  • Can't open cr2 files from my 5D but can from my 20D

i just got a new computer (windows vista) and on my old computer i could open cr2 files from both my 20d and my 5d just fine. but now on my new computer i can't open the cr2 raw files from the 5d but can from the 20d. I have photoshop cs2. I am not planning to upgrated to cs3 anytimes soon, do I just need to install a plug in? Please help.

    Kristen,
No, no, no. The DNG Converter is a stand-alone executable program. You can even put it on your desktop. You would need it only if your camera model is NOT supported by ACR 3.7, which is the latest version you can use with Photoshop CS2.
In that case, you would use the DNG Converter to convert your raw images to DNG files first and then opening the DNG files in ACR 3.7.
Now, the ACR 3.7 plug-in has to be installed in the correrct location, which is where the old ACR plug-in resides. You will be replacing that old, obsolete ACR plug-in (while Photoshop is NOT running).
[The default Photoshop installation comes with and installs that obsolete ACR plug-in.]
Read the instructions on the download page very carefully, and refer to the FAQs of this forum on the same page where you added this topic.

  • Can't open CR2 files in PhotoShop CC. Raw plugin version is 8.3.0.141. MacBook Pro OS 10.9

I'm trying to open .CR2 files (Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS) with PhotoShop CC on my Mac. When I try to open them I get an error saying the file can't be opened. The raw plugin version is 8.3.0.141. Adobe's charts say I need at least "4.6,5.1" so I would assume my version should open it. What gives?

First thing I should do is to link you to the Camera Raw forum where the members there have a far better understanding of Camera Raw problems than I do.
If the generic advice doesn't work, it's time to bring in the specialists.   Click on that link and post your problem with the CR2 files.

  • Updated to latest ACR 6.6 but still can't open CR2 files from Canon Rebel XSi

I updated to latest version of Adobe Camera Raw 6.6 but still can't seem to open my CR2 files in Photoshop. Can't open them in Lightroom either, no preview in Bridge or OS.
    I'm running OS 10.7.2 and Photshop 12.1 x 64 which is CS5.1 I suppose.
I've downloaded Canon's EOS utility hoping that would somehow do something as well but nothing.
The images were shot on Canon Rebel XSi which is certainly supported by the newest version of ACR. So I have no clue as to what's happening... I previously downloaded these images onto my old laptop about a year ago and everything was fine, however now I'm not even getting a preview in OS. Do I have to revert to an older version of ACR (perhaps the same one I used originally?) to open these files again? These files have been stored on a hard drive, so I'm not downloading them directly from the camera-again, this probably has nothing to do with it but not sure what to do. A lot of the posts I've seen recommend downloading the latest version of ACR to fix the issue, but again I've done that and as a matter of fact the camera (Rebel XSi) has been supported for some time now...
In OS, when the image is selected no preview:
    Lightroom error:
    Bridge, no preview:
    Photoshop error:

Something appears to be wrong with your files.
Are most of your images approx. 3.7 MB?
This is very small for a 12 MP image.
If you go back to the original file on your laptop, what is the file size?
Also the fact that the Mac OS is not showing the preview is unusual.
Perhaps these files got corrupted when they were moved to your new computer.
Can you open these files OK on your old laptop?
Is the OS showing the previews on your old laptop?
Also compare the file sizes between old and new computer.
Have you tried repairing your permissions?
Try Disk Utility in your Macs Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility to see if this helps.
    Good Luck!

  • Can't open CR2 files in PS or LR

I have a Canon EOS D1000.  Adobe Creative Cloud with Lightroom 5 and Photoshop 14.2.1.  Have have a Mac OS X 10.7.5.  I cannot open my CR2 files in either Lightroom or Photoshop.  I have downloaded a camera raw plugin which produces a 'patch installer' whatever that is.  Still doesn't seem to work.  Where am I going wrong with this?  Thanks if you can help

If you mean a Canon 1000D, that has been supported for several years, already, since LR 2.1 and PS-CS3/ACR 4.6.
What specific error do you see in LR?  If neither LR nor PS are working then that suggests the files are corrupted or there are permission problems, or that they may be corrupted.
If you want you can upload one of your CR2s that doesn’t work to somewhere like http://www.dropbox.com/ and post a public download link, here, and others can try to see if the files work for them.
I can confirm that a 1000D CR2 I downloaded from this site works ok in ACR 8.4 RC:

  • Can't open CR2 files in CS5, updates fail

I have some CR2 files I need to edit.  I have CS5.  When I try opening the files I get the following message "Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw.  Please visit the Camera Raw help documentation for additional information."
After looking online for some time, I read that updating my adobe applications should allow me to open these CR2 files.
I go to the adobe application manager and it lists I need updates for bridge cs5, photoshop cs5, and photoshop camera raw.  I click the update button, watch the progress bar go from 0-100% in about a minute as if everything is just peachy, and the this pops up-
"the following updates were unable to install.  If you wish to install these updates, please fix the problems below and retry:
Adobe bridge cs5 4.0.5 update, there was an error downloading this update.  Please quit and try again later.
    Photoshop Camera Raw 6.7 Update
There was an error downloading this update.  Please quit and try again later."
I've "tried again later" several times over the last month, and get the same thing each time.
When I click the "contact customer support" link it takes me to a page that says-
Error "This serial number is not for a qualifying product..." when installing an upgrade or upsell
All I want to do is edit these files.  I am happy with CS5, and not interested in paying a monthly fee to upgrade, just so I can open these files.  Help Please?!

I had this issue today trying to reinstall CS5 on a new laptop.   After many hours and trying to get chat support, i read a forum post that suggested installing each update manually from the adobe website.  I tried and it was successful for me........
    Product updates

  • Can't open .cr2 files in Bridge CS4 v.3

Been browsing for hours; can't find the right answer...
I just purchased a Canon 60D, which shoots .cr2 raw files. They won't open in Bridge, which previously opened my Canon 10D .crw raw files. What do I need to do to make the .cr2 files open?
I'd rather not install Canon's Digital Photo Professional 3.10 (came with camera) if I can find a solution/upgrade within Bridge/PSE.
    Details:
    MacBook OS X 10.5.8
Bridge CS4, completely updated to v. 3 with Camera Raw v. 5.7 (which are the latest updates available, I think; just updated today).
    Photoshop Elements 8
    Thanks in advance.

Your CR2 files from the 60D are not supported for your version of ACR.
Each vendor uses different Raw type and sadly enough they use also a different raw type for each new camera the produce. Adobe offers free upgrade for those cameras, about 3 or 4 times a year. In the past they could not get the new Raw types earlier then the consumers so often this meant you had to wait for a period before the ability in ACR was there. Today they have a better relationship and often get pre production models so the updates are already there when the new cameras arrive on the market.
However being a commercial company they don't offer those upgrades for other then the latest versions of ACR and Photoshop. Currently CS6 and CC are both getting the updates but earlier version are not upgraded any longer.
Here is a list of the cameras that are supported and the minimum ACR versions needed for the cameras:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
There is another option available and that is the free Adobe DNG converter. The latest version is here:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5596
Or if the link does not work do a search on Adobe.com your self. After the files have been converted to DNG you will be able to use them in your version of ACR.

  • Can't open .CR2 files in PhotoShop CS5, Camera RAW or Adobe DNG Converter

Firstly take note I shot these with a Canon EOS 450D (or Rebel XSi)...
I see a lot of answers speaking about having the most up to date version of the Camera RAW Plug-in.
I have a similar issue with my .CR2 files... I cannot open them in Camera RAW because it tells me that my camera model or make is not supported by the Plug-in, and so I was directed by other forums to just try converting the .CR2 files to .DNG. I already had the Adobe DNG Converter (version 6.5 I believe), so I tried this. It too told me that my files or camera make were not supported.
However, I have always been able to successfully both open my .CR2 files AND convert them to .DNG. I had not updated anything on my camera nor on my Adobe programs and for some reason this last attempt to open RAW files failed me... I have no idea what change would have led to it. Luckily I shot in both RAW and Large JPG but I certainly don't want to rely on my JPGs of course... Any idea why this problem might have arisen now if it had always worked easily in the past?
    Thanks!

Are these the same exact files you've opened before that you cannot now open?
Or are they newly copied files (camera or CF card to computer)?
Can you not open ANY Canon 450D files, even those you find online and download?
What I'm getting at with these questions is to try to eliminate or suspect data corruption of the files on your disk.
Exactly what versions of the various tools do you have, specifically (don't guess - go check)?

  • I can't open .CR2 files in Photoshop CS4

I'm unable to get the .CR2 files from my new Canon Rebel T3i to open in Photoshop CS4.  I just got this camera and I never had this problem with my old camera (Rebel Xsi).  The raw files from the Xsi will still open, but not the ones from the new camera.  Can anyone help me understand why this is happening?
    Thanks,   Jo

Your only option is to upgrade or use the DNG convertor.
Just to be perfectly accurate, that would be two options.
To use the free Adobe DNG converter, you would download and install the very latest version then whenever you want to edit raw images you'll go through a process something like this:
    1.  Upload the .cr2 files from your camera into a folder on your hard drive.
    2.  Run the DNG Converter application and select the folder (it works on folders, not files).
    3.  Convert all the .cr2 files to .dng files.
    4.  Open the .dng files into Photoshop CS4 through the Camera Raw dialog.

  • Can't open .CR2 files off of a Canon PowerShot S95 (LR3/PS cs5)

I just bought the new Canon S95.  I download pics off of a reader and usually go directly through LR.  This time, LR would only download the few Jpgs I had on the SD card and showed me "The files are from a camera which is not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom."
It does however show a Canon S95 as part of the info when viewing the jpegs in the library module.
I copied the files from the SD card to my hard drive via copy and tried to open the files in Photoshop and got the following error.  "Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw.  Please visit the Camera Raw help documentation for additional information."
I am running a MacPro with 8 G of ram and the current versions of LR3, Photoshop CS5 and Camera Raw.   I can see the thumbs of these raw files in finder where I placed the copies.  I have downloaded many .CR2 files from a Canon S40, S70, 20D, etc.  I'm lost.
    Thanks to all.
    Peace

That's silly.     The Adobe DNG Converter and ACR are always released in tandem and the same camera models are supported in each respective version.
If that camera is not yet supported in any version of ACR, it wll not be supported in any version of the DNG Converter either.
