Can't open disk utility at startup, can't format new hard drive

My hard drive on my 2011 macbook pro recently went out, so I purchased a new one. I plugged it in internally and brought up disk utility in internet recovery, but it didn't recognize the drive. So I tried using an external hard drive reader, but now recovery mode can't be accessed at all, whether I press option or command r after startup, it still gives me the same gray folder with a question mark icon. Is my recovery mode damaged, and is that possible to fix?

You can use an external USB disk/flash drive which has Recovery  (or a full OS - requires a 16GB disk space on a USB flash or a JHFS+ partition with the OSX) on it. Boot from that recovery USB drive. if Internet Recovery worked once, the MBP is already capable of repeating it. It requires an Ethernet or WiFi connection. If neither is available, or is spotty, Internet Recovery will not work. Can you try Internet recovery via Ethernet cable, if all your previous attempts have been via WiFi?
If the drive is not recognized when plugged into the internal SATA bus, either a cable is not plugged in properly (the replacement drive never showed up successfully as per the OP even once, or the drive is DoA). It should be tested externally. Pulling the drive out and putting it back is fairly easy in the 2011/2012 MBPs. The cable could have been damaged during the replacement. The non-drive end of SATA/IR Sensor cable on the main logic board could be loose or damaged.
If you have a external cable SATA-to-USB or SATA-to-FW (very unlikely), format the new drive using a different PC/MAC to make sure it is not DoA. What brand/model is this new drive? Is it an SSD? It may require a FW upgrade.
If there is a second MAC available, a Target Disk Mode boot (press T while powering up the mac with the new drive) may allow the second working mac to format the new drive via Disk Utility.

If you're truly running 10.6.8, there is no Recovery partition - that didn't come along until 10.7x.
You'll need to use the set of gray discs that originally shipped with your model. If you don't have them, you can always get your serial number from the bottom of the casing and call Apple to get a set of replacement discs. These will run you about $20 + shipping & taxes. Once you have the discs, boot from Disk One and use Disk Utility to erase your HD and then reinstall whichever version of OS X that shipped with your model. No way around of getting the discs.

  • Using Disk Utility to Migrate TM to a New Hard Drive

I'm posting this for search/google posterity:
Along with SuperDuper and CCC, plain old Disk Copy works perfectly for migrating a TM backup from one HD to a new, empty one. What I did:
    1. Turn off TM
    2. Go to Restore tab of Disk Utility
    3. Set existing TM HD as the source, and the new HD as the destination
    4. Click Restore button. Depending on the source HD size, this could take a while. My 400 GB source drive took about an 1.5 hours, with verification.
    5. When done, you will have two HDs with the same name. Change the source drive's name.
    6. Turn TM back on.
If all went well, TM should begin using your new HDs backup folder without a hitch.

This is great info. I use a 160gb portable drive with my MacBook Pro as my TM device. I have a fear that if anything happens to my laptop, the portable drive would be lost too since I carry them together. Ideally, I would like to periodically backup the portable drive to the Maxtor I have at home too and this seems like the easiest way to do it.
My question is, if I use the method described here with Disk Utility, does my Maxtor HD need to be a dedicated TM drive too? Will I have to create a partition so that I can continue to use my Maxtor to archive my data?

  • Disk utility and reformatting for an external portable hard drive

I bought a brand-new iomega ego portable hard drive (USB compatible). When attempting to format it, I went to 'disk utility' to erase the drive. The drive appears, with the following information listed: Mount Point : /Volumes/Iomega HDD Capacity : 465.8 GB (500,105,217,024 Bytes)
Format : Winows NT Filesystem Available : 465.7 GB (500,022,378,496 Bytes)
Permissions Enabled : Yes Used : 79.0 MB (82,838,016 Bytes)
Number of Folders : 0 Number of Files : 32
Obviously, it needs to be reformatted. But when I click the erase tab, it will not allow me to pick the volume format or name (it just has it listed but unselectable).
Any suggestions on using disk utility or reformatting the drive so I can use it will be useful!

The drive has been pre-formatted for NTFS. You need to do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to APM then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Can you copy the Windows Bootcamp partition over to a new hard drive?

I'm out of space on my hard drive so I'm adding a larger one.  I originally just wanted to use my time capsule for a backup, but then I remembered about my Windows partition.
What would be the most efficient way to copy both partitions from my original drive to the new drive for install?
I have a Macbook Pro 13in Late 2011 model and running OSX 10.9.5.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Respectfully,
    -Cory

Backup your Windows software using Windows backup software to a Windows formatted disk. Create a new Boot Camp partition on the new drive. Install Windows on it, then restore your backup. You can also buy disk cloning software that can clone the system to another drive and restore the entire clone. I believe Acronis has such software.

  • How can i export a separate FCP 10 project to a new hard drive

I am using  FCPX 10.1.1 - My current EXT harddrive is getting full and I have a Grocery store client that I do weekly edits for. The project is a 30 second commercial and I always have to make price changes. Prior to the latest update I was able to copy the FC events and Projects to a new hard drive. WIth this new version all the files seem to be in one file when i look at the external hard drive.
Is there a way to export seperate projects? do or can i export from Final cut or is there a way to get those files from the hard drive finder window?
    THanks
    TIM

A library contains events, which contain your clips and projects.
This is seen by the Finder as a single document, and can copy or move it just like any other file. It is recognizable by the icon with the four stars in it.
You can control-click on a library in FCP X and use the "Reveal in Finder" command to locate it.
I recommend you follow some of the great tutorials explaining the new library model, and media management in 10.1. I can assure it is vastly superior to the old ways. I can't imagine going back.

  • Disk utility to make bootable Vista on external hard drive

    Hi All,
I've browsed a bit in search of an answer to this question but I've not gotten anything definitive yet. I hope you can help...
My goal is to do turn a disk image (iso) into a bootable Vista install, on an external hard drive. I have successfully done this on the EHD using this process:
    http://iuseapple.com/blog/apple-how-to/advanced-os-x/2007/10/29/how-to-install-l eopard-from-external-firewire-hard-drive/
My reasoning was that a similar process would work for Vista, but I'm hitting a wall. Some ideas of what may be the problem:
The Vista partition on my EHD is 2.5 gigs, which is just a hair larger than my iso of Vista. Should I make the partition more generous?
The partition is formatted in FAT32. I have had issues with this before, when trying to put over 2GB (or was it 4GB?) onto a FAT32 disk at once. I learned how to split dmgs/isos into pieces and move them over like that. Could that be the issue? If so, is it possible to accomplish my goal with a multi-part image?
I don't know that much about Vista. Will it just not tolerate a boot from an EHD?
The progress I've made so far is limited--I keep hitting a wall in Disk Utility. As in the Leopard approach, I attempt to Restore the image (Vista.iso) to the target drive (Win Vista). The computer thinks about it and then gives me a 254 error and a message along the lines of "could not validate source."
Any help would be appreciated. (Including a definitive "this won't work.")
    Thanks in advance,
    edge65

Windows will neither install on nor boot from external drives.

  • How to format new hard drive for Apple TV when you can't use old HD

I need to know how to format a new HD to install in my Apple TV where I can't use the old HD to clone or otherwise create the new structure on the new HD.
I have an Apple TV that was syncing to a Mac Mini that had a defective HD and logic board. I was unable to backup the Apple TV to the Mac Mini for some time before I had the mini repaired by AppleCare.
When the mini came back, it registered on the Apple TV as a new computer and I couldn't sync with it without losing hundreds of dollars of content.
All was okay until the other night when Apple's defective update for the ATV erased ALL my content. I updated it to 3.1 this morning, which Apple indicated might fix the problem. It didn't. The old content is all gone.
My ATV is out of warranty, so I removed the old HD and copied the files from the "Purchased" folder to my mini. That saved most 101 items that I purchased since 12/08 (but not all for some reason). I lost all content prior to 12/08 that I purchased, as well as some content since 12/08 that I purchased.
I need to keep the old HD untouched until I can purchase data recovery software. I'd like to just put a spare IDE HD in that I have into the ATV and just start over with what is in my Mac mini iTunes.
So, how does one do that? I'm not gifted with vast Unix knowledge or experience and I don't want to clone the old HD and risk losing more data if it writes to the HD for some reason.
    Thanks.

    Hi Atagahi,
Firstly, have you emailed Apple iTunes support indicating your issue? There have been instances in which Apple will allow re-downloading of all content you've purchased on the iTunes store.
Secondly, I highly recommend you get an external usb hard drive, attach it to your mini and use it as a Time Machine drive to keep your iTunes purchases safe. It's a fact of life that all hard disk drives will eventually fail. The Apple TV should never be used as any kind of permanent storage space; think of it as a 'temporary holding' zone. And as you've unfortunately already experienced, a glitch wiped out all content on the Apple TV.
As regards your original question, it seems like there have been folks who've done just that...taken the internal drive in the Apple TV out and attached it to a mac and copied files from the Apple TV hard drive. I have not had to do such, so I cannot offer any help here except for Linda's suggestion on googling the net for solutions.
Good luck and hope you get all your purchased content back Atagahi!

  • I can't get my creative suite 4 to install on new hard drive

I purchased Adobe Creative Suite 4 several years ago and installed it on my laptop.  I am still using the same laptop however I recently had them install a new harddrive.  I didn't think about losing my programs they said they'd just put my stuff on an external harddrive and I could just move it over to this one.  When I tried to move photoshop over it gives me error 6.  I talked to someone from adobe and they said they could help me if I had the serial numbers.  I have moved several times since then so I didn't currently have the discs but I was able to find the discs, along with the serial number.  I tried to install the discs last night and my computer won't recognize them, it says they are blank discs.  These are the same ones I originally installed the programs with, they haven't been touched since.  My cd drive works fine with any other cd I put in it.  Ugh what can I do?    I spent a lot of money on this program I can't afford to buy it again.

WolfQU2 please see http://forums.adobe.com/thread/981369 and http://prodesigntools.com/download-adobe-cs4-and-cs3-free-trials-here.html for information on how to download a fresh copy of the installation files for Creative Suite 4.
