Can't open .dmg files on Mavericks.

Hello! I can't seem to open any .dmg files. Tried with DiskMounter and disk utility but still can't install any new applications.
Anyone having the same issue with Mavericks? I upgraded 3 days ago and I don't want to regret it.
I thought maybe some kind of OS installation 'repair' would fix the issue but I'm not sure if it's even possible.
All tips welcome.
Thank you!

Go to: Apple System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General tab > click the Lock > enter your password > select Anywhere.
If you are the only user and are very careful, then it might be OK to leave the preference set to Anywhere. If you are hap-hazard about downloading stuff or other people use the iMac, then you would be wise to set it back once you have what you want.

  • Can't open DMG-files

I can't open DMG-files anymore because OS X associates dmg-files with another program. Usually when I opend .dmg files a "virtual disk" opened, now another program starts.
I tried the Open with (Openen met in Dutch) function, but I don't know which program I have to choose. When I have this problem on a Windows PC I just select explorer.exe. Which file do I have to choose on my Mac? Or is there another way to solve this?

    Hi mrtn87,
    welcome to Discussions!
    /System/Library/CoreServices/BOMArchiveHelper.app opens .zip files,
    and
    /System/Library/CoreServices/DiskImageMounter.app opens the .dmg files.
If you have OnyX, you can try running the "Reset LaunchServices Database" and "Reset links between documents and applications" tasks, see if the problem disappears.
Here is a Terminal command you can try if you don't have OnyX (or one of the usual utilities):
    /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/\
    Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister \
-kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    Let us know.

  • Help! Can't open .dmg files suddenly, and can't find stuffit expander application!

My iMac is currently running on Mac os x 10.5.8, **out of nowhere my computer can't open dmg files. I can't seem to find the stuffit expander application anywhere in my hard drive either, which usually opens these files. Is there another application that can open dmg files? Help Please! I need to open multiple dmg files tonight and can't figure out a way around this. Downloading/running a new stuffit expander application also happens to be a .dmg file. If anyone can help me I'd appreciate it so much!

Do you mean DiskImageMounter was chosen or not?
No change on that .dmg or on on others?
If you want to apply DiskImageMounter to all you have to choose "Change All".
EDIT: Also, Repair Permissions from /Applications/Utilities/ Disk Utility.
Also, George Orville has some interesting advice in this thread
Note this advice is for 10.3 but much of it will apply here.

I have a brand new iMac updated OS X and I can't open dmg files. It appears that I don't have DiskImageMounter. What do I need to do?

The path for DiskImageMounter is Mac HD/System/Library/CoreServices.
EDIT: Get Info on the .dmg and make Open With= DiskImageMounter, then clcik on Change All.

I can't open dmg files on my new MB Air.  What can I do?

How are you trying to open it?  What happens when you double-click it in the Finder? In the Finder Preferences do you have Show these items on the desktop: "CDs, DVDs, and iPods" selected?
    What happens?

  • Cannot open dmg files in mavericks

After installing Mavericks on my iMac I cannot open dmg-files. All that happens is that the system tells me "The following disk images couldn't be opened", with the reason "no mountable file systems".
Now, all I can find when discussing this issue is that "your download is corrupted" or "check your disk" or "reinstall Mavericks!". I have checked and rechecked the files, they are complete and should work. My disk is checked and I have reinstalled Mavericks but nothing happens.
It seems to be a fairly new/rare problem, I can't find any discussion on this problem elsewhere...

I'm having the same problem. I don't have any answers. But here's some information about what I'm seeing that might help someone sort this out.
    I recently upgraded to Mavericks
Both newly downloaded dmg files and ones that were downloaded and sucessfully opened under a previous version of OS X cannot be opened now
I have two user accounts on the same machine. On one I can open dmgs without problem. On the other I get the error.
I'm using the same browser (chrome) on both accounts to download the same disk image, with different results.
    Both accounts are admin accounts
I transferred the disk image that opened properly on my main account to the second account's ~/public/drop box folder and the second account could not open the image.

  • My Safari can´t open .dmg files after downloading

I updated to Mac OS X 4.9. But since this update, Safari cannot open .dmg files after downloading! On 10.4.8 it was not a problem. What can I do?
    eMac G4 PPC   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Darn...I thought that would do the trick.
Given the other problems you mention, more and more, it seems a reinstall of the OS, using Archive and Install is going to be necessary. Have you ever done an Archive & Install of the OS? Important you carefully read the description of the process. If you are uncertain, I find the Take Control Upgrading to Tiger E-zine to be a very helpful guide.
Once you reinstall the OS, then you can upgrade to 10.4.8 using the combo update, repairing permissions via Disk Utility in your Utilities folder when complete.
One question: Not sure why you have run into all these problems on the 10.4.9 upgrade. It worked without problem for me. Anything unusual happen during the install?

  • I can't open dmg files anymore

I JUST got this problem. I have been using my mac for a couple of years now. My Mac is a Macbook Pro, Version 10.7.2 (Lion)
Recently, I have been unable to open Dmg files, whenever I double click it, I get a message saying:
"Warning, the following disk images couldn't be opened"
"Reason: legacy image should be converted"
I never had this problem before, so why am I getting it now? How do I fix this?

  • Can't open DMG files on 10.5.8

    Hi,
I just updated, and to my surprise I can't open any of my DMG files, not even the ones that I download from places like macupdate.com, can somebody help me? Thanks.

    HI,
    Try repairing disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
This process can take up to 10 minutes.

  • Can't open .dmg files, says its "not recognized"

I have recently tried to mount a .dmg file but a dialogue box will always open, saying that the disk was "not recognized".
I've already checked "From anywhere" under "System Preferences/Security and Privacy/Allow applications downloaded from", so there should be no problem with downloading a .dmg file off the internet, right?
The .dmg is an Adobe Extensions Manager CS4. I'm using a Macbook Pro with OS X 10.8, and yes I already know that particular extension manager is not for this operating system, but this has already happened with a 10.8 version as well.

If you right click on the dmg can you open it?
Use Software Update or the OS 10.8.3 combo update to update your OS.  Also, update everything SU has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • Can't open DMG files...should have never upgraded my OS to mountain lion

Upgraded to OSX 10.8.2 and now I can't run any downloaded dmg files. Says "the Following disk images couldn't be opened". and then say's there "isn't enough disk space" I'm pretty sure it has something to do with apps that are not approved by the app store. How can I turn it off?
I posted this question before and thought the problem has been solved nbut i'm still having this problem.

How much disk space do you have? When you "Get Info" on a .dmg file, is it set to open with "DiskImageMounter.app"? Should have nothing to do with your Security settings just to mount a disk image.

  • Can't open .DMG files in Mac OS X 10.7..what can i do?

just bought a new macbook pro  with Mac OS X 10.7
i downloaded some app's like skype , all in .dmg format but i cant install them/use them..
every try to make use of .dmg files , fail!
any idea about what's going wrong and what to do?
    thanks

    1. Yes.
    3. Well, there are two aspects: corruption of the hard drive; or corruption of the .dmg file. For the latter you may try re-downloading the file. For the former you need to try repairing the hard drive.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    2. To reinstall Lion:
    Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
On your computer Lion reinstalls via Internet Recovery, so be sure your internet connection is functioning.

  • Can not open DMG file ... a Cautionary Tale

Recently obtained a CD with a new OS X app.  I double-clicked on it, but nothing happened.  So I double-clicked on it again.  This time I got an error message saying: "Can not open a Windows program." Tried double clicking on it again.  Same message. I was non-plused! Tried several more times.
Before putting a call into Apple Care, I started closing the windows on the screen.  When I closed what I thought was the last window, 1 Dialog Box appeared that had been behind all the other windows.  It stated: "Please enter your Serial Number".
    Two obvious questions:
    1. Why was the dialog box for a current activity, hidden behind all other windows?
    2. Why, when I tried to execute it again, did the dialog box not come to the front?
Perhaps I am the only 27" iMac user with many windows open at a given time?   Don't know ... but please be cautioned.
    Chuck

I have many programs open all the time, Safarie, Finder. Mail, etc., and use 8 different Desktops. If this were the problem, it would have occurred long ago.  The program I was trying to install was from Adobe: Photoshop Lightroom.

You are right.  I shall contact Adobe and, at least, make them aware of this.
