Can't open .doc files.

I just went back to Mac and all my documents are .doc. I used to use my friends macbook and I thought I was able to open them. Please don't tell me I have to buy another program to open these. I seem to remember saving them as docx. Please someone refresh my memory.
Thanks

  • Can't open doc. files in pages

    Ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, Pages won't let me open doc files.
    Is there a way I can fix this?
    Also...I was just thinking about upgrading to the newer iLife09.
    Would that be a better thing to do running Snow Leopard and what not?
    And if I do upgrade to iLife09, I'll still be able to open iLife08 documents.
    Thanks

    iLife & iWork are two separate software packages/suites sold by Apple. I do believe you mean iWork '08.
    Many users are finding problems with the iWork apps in Snow Leopard due to not having the latest updates as of the September 28 installed. For iWork '08 that is Pages 3.0.3 & Numbers 1.0.3. For iWork '09 it's Pages 4.0.2 & Numbers 2.0.2. iWork '09 has since had update 3. I don't use Keynote, but it should also be updated. If you're not running the latest versions & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. They must be in the iWork '08 or iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '08 or iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '08 or '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.

  • I can't open .doc files attached to the mail.

    After upgrading to the last version (31.6.00); I cannot open .doc files.
    I use Open Office 4.1.1.
    No problem with .xls or .pdf files. But neither the attachments in my sent mails nor the attachments in incoming mails type .doc can be opened by clicking on them. I have to first save to the computer than open the file which takes too much time.
    In the attachment you can see the error message.
    Here is the translation of the message:
    - Top window: File cannot be saved as an unknown error occured. Please retry.
    - Second window - below filename: Error - source mailbox

    Very interesting. It was written for doc type files: "OpenOffice Writer (defined)". (I made a translation maybe it is "default" in English version). Then i make it use another program and choose "Open Office Writer". Now it says OpeOffice Writer but no definer (or default) and it is working. Thank you very much Gnospen.

  • Can't open .doc files in Pages with Snow Leopard

    I just installed Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Pages can no longer open .doc files. I receive the error message: "The document “XXX.doc” couldn’t be opened."
    (Operating with iWork 09)
    Help?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    But now I don't have the option "save as" word document as I used to before I installed the update for snow leopard. It only lets me save as iwork '06 or '05.
    That's Pages 3/iWork '08. You may have both iWork '08 & '09 on your Mac & '08 has opened. You can have more than one version, I have three, but you'll need to find a way to identify each one. I have changed the icons for two of the versions & have aliases to each in a folder where I added the version number. This way I can know which one I'm opening & they look different in my Dock. Do not add a version number to the actual application, the updaters then won't find them. (Can you tell I like changing icons? )

  • Can't open .doc files in either Word or Pages!! Any suggestions?

    So I stated having issues with Word not being able to open my .doc files along with a few other things. This prompted me to purchase pages only a few hours ago hoping that it would solve all my problems. Unfortunately this did not solve my problem and now I still can't open them even in pages. Any suggestions?
    I have OS X 10.6.8. Any help would be greatly apreciated as I am a new Grad student and need to be able to access .doc files that are posted online.

    Ok I forgot to try to hit Open With for Word and that worked for one document but I still want to know how to get it open in pages.
    Well you can do the same thing for Pages. From the Get Info window, choose Pages for Open With.
    But you should also be able to:
    drag a Word document and drop it on the Pages icon or
    Launch Pages, choose File > Open, find the Word document using the Open box and click Open.
    If neither works please explain what steps you're following and what happens.
    Thanks.

  • Trial question:  Can't open .doc files from web page

    I'm using Dreamweaver on a Mac, and I have a link on a page
    that should bring up a doc file. When I preview the page in Safari,
    it brings up a directory listing which highlights the file so that
    you can double-click and open the file. (Of course, I'd love for it
    to go ahead and open the file, but my understanding is that
    Dreamweaver Mac doesn't support that.) However, when I preview in
    Internet Explorer, I either get a message that the File is Not
    Found or it just spins and never brings up anything. The file is in
    the root directory of my site (same directory as my index.html.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Do you have Word installed on your Mac? If you don't, it
    won't open.

  • Help! Pages can't open .doc files

    Hey everyone, I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro (Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7; Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDr3) with the new Lion. I also installed Office for Mac 2011 (as I work with both). Whenever I select a .doc file (all of them are) and open it with pages, pages just freezes and doesn't do anything. Does anybody know why? The same goes with Keynote and Numbers whenever I do the same with .ppt and .xls files.
    Thanks in advance!

    Importers embedded in iWork didn't evolve since the first package delivery (january 2009)
    so it's not really surprising to read that they can't treat changes introduced in Me..oSoft Office 2011.
    Try to save your doc with an older format to get them openable in iWork '09.

  • Can not open .doc files from Finder

    I installed Snow Leopard and now I'm having trouble with .doc files. I use Microsoft Office 2004. When I try to open a .doc file directly from the internet or by clicking on it from Finder or desktop, it won't open. Instead I have to go into Word and click open then browse. Any ideas on how to fix this?

    This works only for files that I know have been created in Mac Office 2004, but any other files I download - for instance, from school - will not open in this way. I followed your suggestion, but Word was already the default application used and the "change all" box was unclickable.
    I tried right clicking on the file, going to the "open with" menu, then clicking "other" and selected Word that way. I made sure that "always open with" was checked, but it still didn't help.

  • I can not open adobe files. mainly ones that end in doc. I purchased the 19.99 to convert .doc files

    I can not open adobe files that end in .doc. I purchased the 19.99 to convert doc to pdf and I still cant open. I get an error reading.

    Hi,
    Which Adobe Service did you purchased?
    If you have purchased CreatePDF please visit: https://createpdf.acrobat.com/SignIn.html
    Sign in with your Adobe ID and password, and then convert your word doc into PDF.
    Please let me know if that works.
    If you have Adobe Reader, you cannot convert .doc file to .PDF by drag and drop.

  • Some clients Can't open XLSX files in Libraries using template.dotx but can open xlsx files in libraries using template.doc

    If I create a new library using any Excel/Word template - DOC, DOTX, XLS, XLTX and then upload a XLSX document (or docx) then some of my clients experience issues opening the document.  My work around in the past has been to resave the document
    as XLS or DOC.  Interestingly Old Libraries (Libraries using template.doc) don't have a problem with xlsx or docx documents.  (This only works because most of the clients experiencing the problem only open a few documents and we only have to
    resave a few documents.  I don't know why these clients have this problem though.)
    We are now testing a new Terminal Server implementation.  One with OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office.  We can't open xlsx files on new libraries but can on old libraries.  (docx files are not a problem though)  I found a couple of
    work arounds.  One work around is to click on the down arrow by the document name and select "Edit in Excel" which fails, but then clicking on the document name after will then prompt you to Open/save the document.  Clicking on Open
    successfully opens the document in OpenOffice.  (So rather tedious for the users but nothing has to be changed to make it work.)
    The other option is to create a template from one of the libraries that is working and then use it to create a new library and save my documents to the new library.  Then I'm prompted to Open/Save the xlsx documents in the library.  This
    option is less tedious for the user but then I have to go through and recreate any libraries using template.dotx.  Creating a new library using the standard Document Library option and selecting Word or Excel 2003 does not resolve the issue - it has to
    be created from a template created from an existing library that works in the Terminal Server implementation.
    My boss is opting for the latter option unless I can come of with an alternative that doesn't mean additional steps for the users.  Training is an issue because most of the Terminal Server users are shop floor workers.
    My question is, is there a patch or fix that addresses this issue or any other work arounds that would be less work?
    Additional Info:  Our Sharepoint implementation is the Enterprise version is installed but we do not have the Excel related Features activated (and these can't be activated due to licensing).  I'm not sure if that matters or not but it is
    a different configuration from how most SharePoint installations are configured.  SP1 is installed.  I have not installed any recent CU's.  Versions I see in Patch Status screen include 14.0.6029.1 (primarily) with some additional features
    reporting 14.0.6105.5, 14.0.6107.5, 14.0.6112.5 and 14.0.6114.5.
    Nancy Forbes

    We have tried a couple of additional things.
    We uninstalled OpenOffice and are testing LibreOffice.  I also installed CMIS from the SharePoint Administrator's toolkit, added the solution, and deployed it to my sites.  The "Producer" feature is activated on the site I am testing with.
    I created a new library and posted some docx, doc, and xlsx files to it.  All files can be opened as Read-only from the Library list.  The only way I have found that I can edit the files is to Open the Library with Explorer.   I then deactivated
    the producer feature and tested opening the SharePoint documents from Explorer and it worked the same.
    So am I misunderstanding what the CMIS Producer feature is for?

  • Why can I no longer open .doc files with Word2011

    I can no longer open .doc files with Word 2011.  .docx files are not a problem.  Everything stops responding as soon as I try to open a .doc file and I have to do a manual reboot (by holding the power button down).  This seems to coincide with my update to Mavericks OSX.  I have Word version 14.3.9.
    A colleague of mine is having the exact same problem.
    I tried repairing my disk permissions but this didn't help.
    Please advise.

  • Can't open doc and rtf files on my nokia e61i

    hi!I am new here,i have a problem with my e61i,I can not open doc and rtf files,if someone has a clue to tell me how can i fix the problem i'll be gratefull

    I don't know if this will help but I had a similar problem that started yesterday. I have two macs.  Once can't open MS Office files from the other Mac but can open Office files on each Mac. Drove me nuts for about 2 hours today - on the phone with Apple twice and Microsoft once.  Finally found a similar post from 2007 that suggested to turn off and on file sharing by unchecking the "Share files and folders using AFP", on both computers and rebooting. That fixed it.
    Funny thing, it was only with Office files I created since updating the software last week. Old Office files opened fine.

    You need to manually install the 10.6.2 "Combo" version, there were problems with just using the regular update.

  • Can't open Word files in Yosemite

    I installed Yosemite on my MacBook Pro Saturday. Now, I can't open existing files with Microsoft Word 2011. I can create and open new files, but I can't open old files. What gives?

    Let's gather some more information:
    How many of the following ways to open one of your old Word documents have you tried?
    * Double-click in Finder
    * Right-click in Finder, Open with..., Word
    * File > Open inside Word
    Do they all fail? In the same way?
    When an open fails, does it...
    * ... give an error message? (What message?)
    * ... beep?
    * ... fail silently?
    What file extension do these files have?
    * .DOCX
    * .DOC
    * .RTF
    * .TXT
    * something else? (What?)
    Have you tried uninstalling Word, reinstalling it, and updating it to the current version? (The intent is to rule out the possibility some component of Word has gotten damaged at some time in the past, and Yosemite triggers the damage to manifest itself.)
