Can't open docx files

Recieved a docx file from a windows computer can't open with pages on ipad or mac comes up with unknown error

If you have the latest version of Pages it should open, it could be a problem with the file. This link gives you a few ways to open the file on a Mac, http://www.tothepc.com/archives/5-ways-to-open-docx-word-document-files/

  • Can't open docx-files received via mail client

    Hello,
    I'm using my iPad air (IOS 7.1.2) for my daily business. For that, my emails are synced with my company's exchange server (2007). When I receive an email with a Word docx attachment, I get an error when I try to open the attachment. I tried to open the word files with Word app, GoodReader, DocsToGo, Pages). The file is loaded and then, I got the error, that the file is corrupted. If I login in to the web version of Outlook, I can open the file with the mentioned apps. How can I solve the problem?
    Thanks, Lars.

  • I can't open docx files

    I have always been able to open downloaded Word doc files (from Safari) on my MacBook, which is running Mac OS X 10.6.8. But the last several documents I have tried to download - including various versions of Word docs, like Word 2003-2007 and .docx, are not readable after I download them. When I try to open it, a new copy called a ".cpgz" is opened. This also happens with excel spreadsheets. I do have both programs, Word and Excel, installed on my computer, and can read these files when opened from another location - except when it passes throught downloads. So I can open docs from "My Documents", for instance, but if I move a file from "Downloads" to my desktop, it still will not open. Help! Super-frustrating.

    It sounds like you are using Office 2004. Docx  format was introduced in Office 2008.
    Download the MS XML converter from here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=6782 and it will convert the files so you can open them in your older version of Office.

  • I am not able to open docx files

    I have some docx files (on dvd) from days gone by (good-bye to Windows&Word), and I can't get Pages '09 to open them. It just stalls, it has the progress bar and the beach ball is spinning, but nothing happens. I have to go to the dock and force quit.
    I've read in the forums of other people opening docx files, what am I doing wrong? some of these are not complicated files, one page of text and such. only some do have clipart, but that's about it.
    is there some setting I could check??
    *Did some more testing. These files were copied to my desktop, and I was clicking and right-clicking and opening them from the desktop. And, Pages would not open them. I then opened Pages and chose File, Open and opened them from within Pages, and just like that they open! only errors are missing font errors. Why would Pages have this behavior? What's so different about opening them by clicking on them or right-clicking Open??
    Well, at least I got them open. maybe this will help someone else.
    thanks

    Okay, I never really found an answer, but at this point Pages is opening when I click on docx files.
    Here's what I did and found out:
    FIRST, thank you to all the suggestions and thoughts! Most of them I had already tried, but this is what the forum is for, and most of the time it's what solves things for me, so a big thank you!
    I tried deleting the plist and cache files for Pages. (I use TinkerTool) That did not help, problem still existed. So I completely deleted/uninstalled Pages (TinkerTool). - I always try rebooting between troubleshooting - Then re-installed Pages, and tested before I made any changes/customizations. Here's where I saw a ray of hope; it worked! So then I made a few customizations, minor ones, such as which template, zoom size, ruler, etc. Then exit Pages. Try from opening docx from desktop...spinning ball again.
    At that point, I decided to go as fruhulda mentioned and reinstall the OS. I always do regular backups and Time Machine is going, but I looked around and backed up some stuff. Was not exited about having to reinstall all my software, but it bugs me when something is not working as intended (what else could be goofy in the background?). After reinstalling OS and downloading any updates, first thing I installed was iWorks. Tested opening docx, issue gone! Did some Pages customizations, and tried again...still working. Add a personal template for Pages to open with, and tested again...still working.
    As I go through and add my applications and customizations, I stop briefly and test Pages with docx files, so far it continues to open.
    There must have been some file(s) somewhere in the system or system library that was messing with Pages. It's the kind of thing you never find out. However, fresh and clean did the trick.
    Again, thank you to all who read and posted; I appreciate it all!
    Linda

  • Can't open Word files in Yosemite

    I installed Yosemite on my MacBook Pro Saturday. Now, I can't open existing files with Microsoft Word 2011. I can create and open new files, but I can't open old files. What gives?

    Let's gather some more information:
    How many of the following ways to open one of your old Word documents have you tried?
    * Double-click in Finder
    * Right-click in Finder, Open with..., Word
    * File > Open inside Word
    Do they all fail? In the same way?
    When an open fails, does it...
    * ... give an error message? (What message?)
    * ... beep?
    * ... fail silently?
    What file extension do these files have?
    * .DOCX
    * .DOC
    * .RTF
    * .TXT
    * something else? (What?)
    Have you tried uninstalling Word, reinstalling it, and updating it to the current version? (The intent is to rule out the possibility some component of Word has gotten damaged at some time in the past, and Yosemite triggers the damage to manifest itself.)

  • Some clients Can't open XLSX files in Libraries using template.dotx but can open xlsx files in libraries using template.doc

    If I create a new library using any Excel/Word template - DOC, DOTX, XLS, XLTX and then upload a XLSX document (or docx) then some of my clients experience issues opening the document.  My work around in the past has been to resave the document
    as XLS or DOC.  Interestingly Old Libraries (Libraries using template.doc) don't have a problem with xlsx or docx documents.  (This only works because most of the clients experiencing the problem only open a few documents and we only have to
    resave a few documents.  I don't know why these clients have this problem though.)
    We are now testing a new Terminal Server implementation.  One with OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office.  We can't open xlsx files on new libraries but can on old libraries.  (docx files are not a problem though)  I found a couple of
    work arounds.  One work around is to click on the down arrow by the document name and select "Edit in Excel" which fails, but then clicking on the document name after will then prompt you to Open/save the document.  Clicking on Open
    successfully opens the document in OpenOffice.  (So rather tedious for the users but nothing has to be changed to make it work.)
    The other option is to create a template from one of the libraries that is working and then use it to create a new library and save my documents to the new library.  Then I'm prompted to Open/Save the xlsx documents in the library.  This
    option is less tedious for the user but then I have to go through and recreate any libraries using template.dotx.  Creating a new library using the standard Document Library option and selecting Word or Excel 2003 does not resolve the issue - it has to
    be created from a template created from an existing library that works in the Terminal Server implementation.
    My boss is opting for the latter option unless I can come of with an alternative that doesn't mean additional steps for the users.  Training is an issue because most of the Terminal Server users are shop floor workers.
    My question is, is there a patch or fix that addresses this issue or any other work arounds that would be less work?
    Additional Info:  Our Sharepoint implementation is the Enterprise version is installed but we do not have the Excel related Features activated (and these can't be activated due to licensing).  I'm not sure if that matters or not but it is
    a different configuration from how most SharePoint installations are configured.  SP1 is installed.  I have not installed any recent CU's.  Versions I see in Patch Status screen include 14.0.6029.1 (primarily) with some additional features
    reporting 14.0.6105.5, 14.0.6107.5, 14.0.6112.5 and 14.0.6114.5.

    We have tried a couple of additional things.
    We uninstalled OpenOffice and are testing LibreOffice.  I also installed CMIS from the SharePoint Administrator's toolkit, added the solution, and deployed it to my sites.  The "Producer" feature is activated on the site I am testing with.
    I created a new library and posted some docx, doc, and xlsx files to it.  All files can be opened as Read-only from the Library list.  The only way I have found that I can edit the files is to Open the Library with Explorer.   I then deactivated
    the producer feature and tested opening the SharePoint documents from Explorer and it worked the same.
    So am I misunderstanding what the CMIS Producer feature is for?

  • Opening .docx files

    Does anyone know how to open .docx files? I am running 10.4.11 and use Microsoft Office for Mac for word processing. Generally it is no problem for me to use Word to open .doc files that are emailed to me, but I can't seem to open .docx files. I've tried opening these files in both Word and text editor, but neither works. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks very much.

    Use this tool, Microsoft Office 2008, or iWork 08 to open them.

    We have one PC that will not open .docx files from SharePoint 2010; the PC continues to get an error saying the file "can't be opened because the server couldn't be contacted"; the same file(s) open right up on all other PC's.

  • Hi guys i m new as my name suggest could anybody tell me how to open .docx files on my macbook os x 10.7.4 thnx

    hi  i am a newbie   can anybody tell me how to open .docx files on macbook pro 10.7.4

    Ideally, you need software like Microsoft Word (Office), or Open Office, or NeoOffice, or LibreOffice, or Pages, etc.
    TextEdit or Preview (applications folder) can usually view them, though not always perfectly.

  • Iphone won't open docx files created and sent via Entourage

    Can't open docx on iphone.
    Our Macs in our office were recently updated to Mac OS 2008. We use Entourage.
    Now, our word documents are automatically saved as docx.
    Many of us have iphones and frequently use them to open and view documents. We can't open the docx files.
    I found a 2009 discussion online regarding this. It was said the problem only exists when docx is created in Entourage. This is not practical to have to save again as doc and send (which supposedly will cause formatting problems.)
    Supposedly if you send through normal mail instead of entourage, the problem does not occur. Not a practical option for our company.
    Is there an easy, practical workaround for this? Why is this an Entourage only problem? Are they or apple working on fixing this?

    I cannot specifically address the use of Office on a Mac, but the file extension for newer Office files being docx means they are Office XML files. The extension is the same for Office 2007, the Microsoft version for the PC. The x is appended to the file extension for the other Office products as well (for the PC). I have no trouble opening a Word file with the docx extension when created in Word 2007 on my PC.
    There is a setting in Word that allows you to change the default save if you want to change it back to doc. That would put the file in compatability mode. It can be opened by newer and older versions of Word, however a docx file cannot be opened by an older version. If you go to the settings section, then save section, you can change the default file setting.
    I cannot address Entourage, since I'm not using a Mac, but it could have to do with how it handles an XML file
    Hope this helps you.

  • Can't open docx

    Hi
    I have a new question about pages. When i try to open a docx file it just gives me an error!? I bought iWork '08 a month ago but i haven't tried to open docx files before until now. Anyone knows what the problem is?
    Thnx in advance... ...again

    KOENIG Yvan wrote:
    It's simple, the format of these docx files is not recognised by Pages.
    Well, Pages 3.0 is able to open most docx files. It cannot save to the format (unlike TextEdit) but it can open them. Usually.
    Nevertheless, NeoOffice is also a possible solution to a difficult docx file.

    Hi,
    Which Adobe Service did you purchased?
    If you have purchased CreatePDF please visit: https://createpdf.acrobat.com/SignIn.html
    Sign in with your Adobe ID and password, and then convert your word doc into PDF.
    Please let me know if that works.
    If you have Adobe Reader, you cannot convert .doc file to .PDF by drag and drop.

  • Can't open CR2 files in photoshop and camera raw

    This weekend I rented a Canon 5D Mark iii. I have downloaded the files and all of the thumbnails in camera raw say CR2 and when I try to open Photoshop does not recognize this product.
    I have:
    Photoshop CS4
    Camera Raw CS4
    Canon 5D Mark ii
    I have checked my updates folder and all my updates are current. Do I need to upgrade to CS5 or is there a way around this?

    Hi I recently had a problem opening CR2 files in PHotoshop cs4. I had to reinstall into a new computer, so obviously it installed the basic programme and not the updates.
    After trying everything, even calling the help desk, there was apparently nothing that can be donw as they no longer support cs4.
    I kept trying and found a you tube video, which i cant find again to add the link but i followed the link and with what I did earlier I can now open CR2 files in my photoshop cs4
    I found the relevany update that I needed to install and downloaded it, camera raw 5.2 ( Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Camera Raw 5.2 update )  this is the one for the Canon 5d Mk2
    After downloading it would not update the progeramme so I was in the same possition, but i noticed the files were there and i just needed to put them in the right place in photoshop so carried on looking for were to put the Plus In.
    This led me to the video.
    To the point.
    Download the update and save to a location where you will remember.
    open Adobe photoshop and go to "edit"
    Them " Preferences "
    then "General "
    Then " Plus-Ins"
    At the top you will see " Add Plug-Ins Folder " Check this box then navigate to the "win64" ( this is because mine is a windows 64 bit computer and the download is specific ) and Choose it.
    Shut down photo shop and try to open a raw.
    Bridge doesnt work for some reason but im going to keep looking.
    Hope this works for you as well.
