Can't open Excel in Numbers

Hi,
I have downloaded an Excel file from my internet bank, but it won't open in Numbers. I get this error message: Import Warning - This is a HTML document, not a valid Excel document. The data might look different.
It opens fine in Excel on my PC though. But I'd like for it to work on my new mac, as I am switching everything to mac.
Any ideas anyone?

I download a Quarterly Mutual Fund report from the WSJ (2_3045-quarterlylist-quarterlylist.html)
It is just a text file.
http://online.wsj.com/mdc/public/page/23053-quarterlyA-quarterly.html
It comes with the html extension. Double click and it opens as text in your default browser. If you try to use Numbers to open it, you get an error message re: html document. Change the extension to txt and Numbers will import it correctly.
If you right click or ctrl click on the file and "get info" you'll see the full name with extension if yours are not visible.
I have also downloaded files from US Bank. Theirs say Excel but are just text.

Buy a newer version of Office (assuming it supports Lion). I don't know how the free Office substitutes (Open Office, Neo Office) stand as regards to Lion support.  Apple has its own Office equivalent (Numbers, Pages) but I have never seen a copy so I can't say anything about it.
As Klaus said, dropping PPC coding support was mentioned before release, but is obviously not the first thing they are going to tell you about Lion.  For those of us using Macs the rule of thumb has been for support to drop roughly 4 years after a hardware or software platform has been discontinued.  This is no publicized formal policy but if you check the various hardware and software releases over the past decade you'll see that support discontinues about 2 OS releases after whatever was current at the time. Leopard was the last OS that ran on PPC, and Lion is 2 OS releases after Leopard, so I don't think any of us are surprised that anything related to PPC is now gone.  Unfortunately it just means that Mac owners have to either be well-heeled to make more frequent computer purchases, or you have to be savvy and figure workarounds and be thankful for third party support.

  • Some users can't open Excel files. It is trying to open it in Internet Explorer "An error has occurred. Please try again."

I have some users in my company that can't open Excel files from any document libraries on SharePoint 2010. The receive the error message "An error occurred. Please try again."  We don't currently use the Excel calculations services. When
a user opens an excel file they are prompted to either Read Only or Edit.
This affects less than 5 people in a large company.  They have the Full Control permissions and have been able to open the files previously.  There has been no changes made to the server either.  I can't find anything that points to this in the
    event viewer.
It doesn't matter if which computer that they try to open this up from either.   All computers are Windows 7 Professional with IE 9 and Office 2010 x64.
I can't find anything that points specifically to this exact error. None of the excel files contain pivot tables.    This one has me stumped.

I would make sure no one has open on machine / locked on machine (Would assume you checked this, but wanted to add)
Also would have assumed you restarted the machines (:))
Make sure the file security did not change (check to ensure no one changed the sercuity of the excel)
Make sure the version of excel is the same (Changing from 2010 back to 2007 affects the file, etc.. on convert) that no one converted and saved thus causing error in file.
Can they open other excel files?
It sounds like the excel file it self has changed if you cannot see issue in SharePoint logs.
If it is all SharePoint excel files - try deleting one persons access and readding them to see if that helps.
    SharePoint has issues ;)

How can I open excel pdf files

    Hi mmart1957,
Do you have Excel files, PDF files, or PDF files that have been converted to Excel? If you're working with PDF files, you'll need either Reader or Acrobat to open the files. If you have a converted Excel file, then you'll need Excel to open it.

    Hi rabg,
I am using OS X 10.8 on a Mac. This may be different if you are using iOS.
Does Numbers'09 still exist in your Applications folder? Maybe inside a new folder? Perhaps you could use Numbers'09 to open your documents.

    Hi terrymmurphy,
Do you double-click on the Excel file and unable to open this file?
If so, the association between the file and the corresponding application may be missing.
Please follow these steps to re-associate the file manually.
     1.  Right-click the Office file that you want to open.
     2.  Select Open with, then click Choose default program.
     3.  Select the appropriate program to associate with the file, click to select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.
This Excel file may be damaged, we can try these methods to repair a corrupted workbook.

Could you please tell us more detail information? I’ll analyze this issue in detail as soon as getting it.

  • "Open In Excel" button inside the Xlviewer.aspx page return Error and I can not open excel using local office

Inside the xlviewer.aspx page when I click on "Open In Excel" at first I receive this Error:
Some files contain viruses that can be harmful to your computer. it is important to be certain that this file is from a trustworthy sourceDo you want to open this file?
Then, When I click on Yes, the second error message(below) shows and I can not open Excel using my local Excel Application.
This action couldn't be performed because office doesn't recognize the command it was given.
I should notice that the application is published under the HTTPS protocol.
It is just working with IE 9.0. Neither Chrome nor IE after 9.0.

Sure. I posted here since I suspect that the lastest upgrade may have a bearing on it.
What do I need to move it over to Number and Lion?

  • Numbers can't open excel files that requires a password

How can I open an excel file that requires a password? I recently purchased the 'Numbers' program and I get an error message saying that Numbers cannot open an encrypted file. However, I can open and view the file (but not edit).
    Apple needs to fix this!
Any suggestions on how to open a password protected file using Numbers?
    Thanks,
    Curtis

    Thanks
I compared the beginning of your file to the beginning of two XL ones which are on my machine (in fact, they are files created with openOffice).
You may see that there are many differences.
They may explain the different behaviour.
If someone is able to drive Excel with an AppleScript,
he may write a script opening your document in Excel,
    saving it
opening the newly saved file in Numbers.
As I don't own Excel, I ignore its required syntax so I can't write a clean script.
If the XL's syntax is the same than the Numbers one, this quick and dirty one may do the trick :
set aFile to (path to desktop as text) & "Treatment Report No Header.xls"
    tell application "System Events"
set aName to name of disk item aFile
    end tell
    tell application "Numbers"
    open file aFile
save document 1 (* maybe save document aName *)
close document 1 (* maybe close document aName *)
    end tell
    tell application "Numbers"
    open aFile
    end tell

  • Can't open excel 97 with numbers

I am unable to open an .xls file with numbers '09 v2.3 (554).  I have not had this problem before although this file is Excel '97 it is one of my earliest files from my PC days.  I recieve the error message "This document was created with an unsupported version of Excel. Only documents created with Excel ’97 or later can be opened."  Don't understand as it is '97.
I've tried to open other files from the same folder unsucesfully and I can't even open the word .doc files.
    Thanks, any ideas much appreciated.

I'd suggest downloading one of the open source Office suites, OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice or NeoOffice, then re-saving the result in a more recent Excel format, to be opened in Numbers.
Or you might stop at that first step, and use that application to work with these files.
Links are to download sites. All three request donations. Neo requires a recent donation to download the most current version.

    Barry

  • Can't open Excel files with Numbers

    Hi,
I'm having troubles when I try to open Excel files with Numbers. The iWork program simply shuts down and a message appears, telling that a "sudden problem happened".
Can anyone help here? I really appreciate.
    Rafinha

    Hi Rafinh,
    Welcome to Numbers discussions.
Numbers will open Excel documents. Sometimes deleting the Numbers Preference file will do the trick. Close Numbers then delete the Numbers preference file: home > Library > Preferences, com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist
In the upper right of this window click Search thousands of questions have been asked and answered.
These Discussions are enduser helping enduser, not Apple employees answering questions. Questions will be answered when a enduser such as yourself finds time, desires to, knows the answer along with the time to respond.
Again, welcome to Numbers Discussions, have fun here.

  • Numbers 3.0.1 - Can't open file "Work.numbers"

    Hello, all Community!
Here's a iWork Numbers file, edited and successful saved yesterday to local folder, named Work.numbers.
Today this file not opening anymore. Number's says: "Can't open file ..." And just one button "OK".

What I done to try resolve this problem:
    1. Checked permissions and repaired.
    2. Tried to open file in iCloud web-editor - no result. iCloud says that it can't open this spreadsheet.
    3. Tried to convert file via some online file type converters to xls document (i will not put link here). Converter says that I have wrong file format.
Also I tried to open file in some other programs. No luck.
    That's all.
File Work.numbers has been closed correctly and was no errors. Unfortunately, we have no any backup copy of this file anywhere. I know, this is stupid, but question now: How can I repair this document? Is any repair tools for iWork files?
The file seems like has right structure.

Unzipping Index.zip is passing without errors. It has many "iwa" files with binnary content and I can't get data from it. But, data in that file is very important for one person.
Could anybody help me to resolve my problem to restore Numbers document?

  • Can't open Excel or Word files on share drive (SMB or AFP) after 10.9.2

After updating to Mavericks OS 10.9.2, I can no longer open excel or word files on my company file share.  I receive the error:
    'FILEPATH' could not be found.
Ckeck the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file location is correct.
If you are trying to open the file from your list of most frequently used files on the File menu, make sure that the file has not been renamed, moved, or deleted.
I am able to open files on my lcaol hard drive, and other external USB Flash drives.  Word present's a slightly different error, with the same theme (filename).
I've tried rebooting both the client and server (both running 10.9.2).  Was successful opening files when booting the client into safe mode.  Any ideas?
    Bill

I don't know if this will help but I had a similar problem that started yesterday. I have two macs.  Once can't open MS Office files from the other Mac but can open Office files on each Mac. Drove me nuts for about 2 hours today - on the phone with Apple twice and Microsoft once.  Finally found a similar post from 2007 that suggested to turn off and on file sharing by unchecking the "Share files and folders using AFP", on both computers and rebooting. That fixed it.
Funny thing, it was only with Office files I created since updating the software last week. Old Office files opened fine.

  • Can't Open Excel Files in iOS 6

One of my co workers upgraded to the new iOS 6 last week and now they can't open some of the Excel files from their iPhone 4S.  I can open the file with no problem, I have iOS 5.1.1 iPhone 4S.  iOS 6 can open some of the excel files, but I know it can't open them all.  Some of the .xlsx files will open but some can't.  Anyone else having this problem?

Here is the pic of what happens why he opens the file on iOS 6.  It does not go any further.  I open it fine with no problems, I am on iOS 5.1.1
